Frequently asked questions

  • How do I choose the right output for a solid fuel boiler? Base it on the calculated heat loss of the heated building. With wood/coal boilers, however, also bear in mind that during a single load the boiler burns for several hours at essentially constant output - this is why it is common practice to add a buffer tank to the boiler, which stores the surplus heat for later use instead of the boiler having to be throttled down inefficiently.
  • What else do I need to install this boiler? Besides the boiler itself, the system usually requires: a buffer (accumulation) tank of suitable volume, a circulation pump (often already with a built-in Laddomat or a thermostatic valve protecting the boiler against low-temperature corrosion), a safety valve, an expansion vessel and a flue/chimney with sufficient draught matching the boiler output - you will find the exact chimney draught values in the technical parameters above.
  • Which fuel is suitable and which is not? Use only the fuel recommended by the manufacturer for the given model (usually log wood of a defined length and moisture content, or brown coal briquettes or coal, depending on the boiler type) - unsuitable or excessively moist fuel reduces efficiency, increases the formation of tar and deposits and can cause damage to the boiler.
  • What about the chimney inspection and legislation? Before the boiler is put into operation, and also regularly during its use (usually once a year for solid fuels), an inspection/cleaning of the chimney by an authorised chimney sweep is required by law - without the relevant inspection report, an insurance claim in the event of a fire may also be disputed.
  • How much maintenance does the boiler require? It usually includes regular removal of ash and cleaning of the heating surfaces/flue gas passages of soot (the interval depends on the intensity of use, usually in the order of weeks), and a thorough check once a year, including the seals and the chimney.
  • Can I install the boiler myself? The positioning and connection of the boiler to the heating system, the chimney and the safety devices should be carried out, or at least checked, by a qualified heating technician - this is an appliance with an open fire, high temperatures and pressure components, where an error in the connection can pose a safety risk.

Company History

The family company ATMOS was founded in the Czech Republic in 1935. In the beginning, production was focused on gasifier power units for cars and boats under the brand name DOKOGEN, i.e. the same principle used in modern gasifier boilers for wood and coal.

Despite the German occupation and communist dictatorship, it was possible to maintain the development of wood boilers, gasifier units and compressors. In 1980, at the Pragotherm exhibition, the first wood gasifier boilers and wood waste boilers were presented. To date, 90 types of hot water boilers have been developed, for which the company holds 15 patents. One of the first developed boilers was the EKONOMIK boiler in 1968.

To ensure the European market with quality boilers that save the environment and energy, three generations of the Cankář family are currently working in the family business. The founder of the company, Jaroslav Cankář senior, passed away in March 2006 at the age of 94.
