    A ground water-to-water heat pump uses the nearly constant temperature of groundwater (via extraction and recharge wells) as a heat source throughout the year — this allows it to achieve the highest coefficient of performance (COP) among common types of heat pumps, even on freezing days. It requires a hydrogeological assessment and a permit for groundwater abstraction.

    Frequently asked questions

    • When is an investment in a ground water-to-water heat pump worthwhile? Mainly when there is sufficient groundwater availability on the property and higher heat loss of the building — the higher initial investment (wells) is offset by lower operating costs due to the high COP.
