Air-to-Water Heat Pumps

Air-to-water is the most common type of heat pump — the outdoor unit extracts heat directly from the surrounding air (it works even in freezing temperatures), and the indoor/hydraulic part transfers it to the heating system and the hot water tank. It doesn't require drilling or ground collectors, so it is the easiest to install.

• What is the difference between split and monoblock configuration? In a split system, the refrigerant circuit is divided between the outdoor and indoor unit (installation requires working with refrigerant), while in a monoblock system, the entire refrigerant circuit is located in one outdoor unit, and only heated water is led into the house — simpler installation, no refrigerant handling inside the house.
• What does R410a, R32 and R290 mean in terms of refrigerant type? These are different generations of refrigerants with decreasing impact on global warming (R290 — propane — has the lowest impact). Newer models (R32, R290) usually also have higher efficiency.
