When a bathroom is being renovated, inspection doors are often a topic that is decided almost at the very last moment – and very often quickly. "We'll put some small doors there so we can get to the valves" – a sentence I have heard in various variations dozens of times. And this underestimation leads to situations where the customer calls after a year to say that a hose behind the bathtub has burst, water was running for several hours before it was even noticed, and now we are looking for a solution together on how to get to the shut-off valve at all, because the doors are too small, incorrectly placed or cannot be opened because they were built into the tiling.

This article is specifically focused on the two most common places in the bathroom where inspection doors solve a specific technical problem: the space behind the bathtub and the pedestal under the sink or the sink cabinet. Both places have their own specifics – different height, different operating conditions, different requirements for the size of the opening and the material of the doors. We will go through everything you need to know before you choose a specific product, order tiling materials and give the mason instructions on where and what kind of opening to leave.

Why you need an inspection opening behind the bathtub at all

A bathtub is usually installed against a wall, mostly three walls, and covered with a panel. Behind this panel is an entire network of installations: cold and hot water supply for the faucet, in many cases also a supply for the shower system, the drain pipe of the trap, and if you have a bathtub with a hydro massage or a circulation pump, also an electrical installation with a power cable and an electrical distribution.

All these elements have a limited lifespan and must be accessible. Shut-off valves (corner or straight) are used to cut off the water in case of a malfunction or when replacing the faucet. A trap can clog, loosen or start leaking – this happens commonly after 5–10 years of operation. A hydro massage pump requires regular inspections and can simply stop working. If we covered these elements solidly without any access, every repair would mean breaking the tiles or the panel – with costs several times higher than the inspection doors themselves.

Where exactly to place the inspection opening behind the bathtub

This is the question where the most mistakes are made. The inspection opening behind the bathtub can be located in two places: either in the side wall (at the shorter edge of the bathtub, where the faucet or supply valves are), or in the back wall, if the bathtub is moved away from the wall and a space remains between the bathtub and the wall. In practice, the most common combination is: side wall at the head of the bathtub (where the valves and faucet are), and possibly another opening in the front back wall for the trap, if the trap is located in a different place than the valves.

Important rule: the inspection opening must be located in such a way that a real repair can be carried out through it, not just a view. This means that you must be able to reach the valve with your hands and close it, loosen the trap nut, or possibly replace the entire faucet assembly. A small opening of 200×200 mm is not enough for anything other than a view with a flashlight. From practice we recommend at least 300×300 mm for spaces with separate valves, and 500×500 mm or more for spaces where the faucet, both valves and the trap are located.

The height of the opening depends on where the installations are located. Corner valves at the bathtub are usually at a height of 150–250 mm from the floor (measured to the center of the fitting), the trap is even lower. The upper edge of the inspection opening should not be higher than the upper edge of the bathtub panel (if the opening is in the front panel). If the opening is in the side wall, it is placed so that its center corresponds to the height of the installations to which you need access.

Inspection doors under the sink – different conditions, different approach

Under the sink – whether standing freely on legs or in a built-in pedestal, or in a cabinet pedestal – there is usually a trap, corner valves for cold and hot water and sometimes also flexible hoses for the faucet supply. In the case of a built-in pedestal or a built-in niche under the sink, an inspection opening is just as necessary as behind the bathtub.

A specific feature of the space under the sink is the lower depth – a built-in pedestal is usually no deeper than 30–40 cm, so the installations are closer to the opening and with the correct size of the opening, access is comfortable even through smaller doors (300×400 mm or 400×400 mm). More important here is the choice of material of the doors and their surface treatment, because the area under the sink is more humid than the side wall next to the bathtub – water from washing splashes, condensation forms on the cold pipe and overall humidity is higher here.

Wall-mounted base vs. cabinet – when inspection doors are needed

If there is a classic bathroom cabinet with doors under the sink, you don't need inspection doors – you can access the installations through the cabinet without any problems. Inspection doors come into consideration in the following cases:

  • Wall-mounted base under the sink, where there is no hinged door, but only a tiling panel
  • Integrated cabinet, where one side is accessible only from the inside of the masonry recess
  • Installation behind a drywall panel under the sink
  • Space under a double-sink countertop in a masonry version, where the traps and valves are accessible only from the front side

In these cases, it is necessary to build inspection doors into the tiling or drywall panel so that after the work is completed, the opening is functional, tightly sealed and as aesthetically unobtrusive as possible.

Choosing the right size – practical examples

Behind the bathtub, there is a simple rule: a larger opening is always better than a smaller one, provided the structure allows it. If you are making a side opening in the frame of the bathtub (e.g. from tiles or drywall), the minimum recommended dimensions are:

  • 300×300 mm – the absolute minimum, suitable for spaces where only one valve or trap is accessible and no physical work with hands inside the space is required
  • 400×400 mm or 500×500 mm – standard for regular access to valves and trap behind the bathtub
  • 600×600 mm or 800×800 mm – recommended for bathtubs with hydromassage, where a pump, electrical box or multiple fittings are located behind the tub

For spaces under the sink, slightly smaller dimensions are sufficient, since the depth of the space is smaller and the installations are closer: 300×300 mm or 300×400 mm is usually enough. If you have a double sink with two traps and four valves, consider a size of 400×500 mm.

Concrete example: during the renovation of a bathroom in an apartment building, we installed inspection doors on fixed hinges with a drywall insert 300×300 mm into the side drywall panel of the bathtub with a single-position faucet and no hydromassage – it was sufficient, since the valves were right next to the opening and the trap was easily accessible. In another case with a bathtub, where there was also hydromassage behind the panel and additionally a waste pipe from an adjacent WC, we chose inspection doors with a drywall insert 600×600 mm – and it proved to be tight enough, when we had to replace the pump during the first repair.

Material of the doors – what withstands the bathroom environment

The bathroom is a demanding environment in terms of materials. Temperatures fluctuate, humidity is high, surfaces are exposed to direct water splashing and steam. Inspection doors must withstand all of this for decades without rusting, deforming or losing the functionality of the lock.

Two main types of inspection doors are used in bathrooms: sheet metal with surface treatment (RAL 9010 – white matte) and drywall (doors with a frame into which a drywall sheet is inserted, which is then tiled).   • Sheet metal doors (white RAL 9010) – suitable wherever the doors remain visible and will not be tiled. Solid, durable, easy to clean. For the bathroom, powder-coated or lacquered versions resistant to moisture are suitable – not bare sheet metal without surface treatment. Not suitable behind tiling.
  • Drywall doors (with a drywall sheet insert) – intended for situations where you want the doors to blend in with the tiling. The surface is tiled with the same tiles as the surrounding area, so the doors are practically invisible from an aesthetic point of view. This is an ideal solution behind the bathtub and under the sink in a masonry base.

Which type of lock for the bathroom environment

The lock of inspection doors in the bathroom must be easy to operate, resistant to moisture and at the same time should not protrude into the space. The basic types are square locks (operated by a handle or key) and snap locks (keyless, opens by pressing). For the bathroom: if the doors are in an area accessible to children and you don't want them to play with them, choose a square lock with a key. If access to the doors is only for adults and you want maximum simplicity, a snap lock system is sufficient. Installation – when to install the doors and what must not be missing before tiling

This is practically the most important part of the whole article, because most problems with inspection doors in the bathroom do not arise from a wrong product choice, but from a wrong timing of the installation or from a wrong procedure during tiling.

Rule number one: the frame of the inspection doors is installed BEFORE tiling, not after. If you tile first and then decide to make a hole, you risk damaging the waterproofing with cutting discs, you will not get a straight edge of the hole for fitting the frame, and the overall aesthetics will suffer. The correct procedure is:

  1. Determine the position and size of the opening before the bricklayer or drywall installer
  2. Make the opening in the wall or in the drywall exactly to the size of the door frame (with the correct tolerance – usually +5 mm on each side for drywall)
  3. Install the door frame into the opening before applying the waterproofing (if waterproofing is part of the system)
  4. Waterproof, prime and fill the gaps between the frame and the wall
  5. Tile – including the door cover itself, if it is a drywall version
  6. Finally, install the door leaf (doors) into the frame

Waterproofing and sealing around the inspection door frame

This is where the most frequent mistakes are made. The joint between the inspection door frame and the tiles or drywall must be sealed so that water cannot penetrate into the structure. In practice, this means:

  • Apply a waterproofing coating also at the contact between the frame and the base (if it is a wet zone)
  • Fill the gap between the frame and the tiles with silicone (not with cement-based filler) – silicone remains flexible and does not crack
  • Never leave an open gap between the frame and the wall without sealing – this is a direct path for moisture

Behind the bathtub specifically: the area behind the bathtub is not dry. Condensation, a possible leak from an improperly sealed valve or silicone seal between the bathtub and the wall – all of this leads to moisture that must go somewhere. Most common installation mistakes of inspection doors behind the bathtub and under the sink

From practical experience with dozens of projects, mistakes can be divided into several categories:

1. Too small an opening

The customer (or tiler) decided to "save" and chose an opening of 200×200 mm instead of 400×400 mm. Result: you can see the valve through the opening, but you cannot reach it with your hands. Such an opening is useless and in case of a failure, it will be necessary to break the tiling. This is the most common mistake.

2. Wrong placement of the opening

The opening is too high or too low, or on the wrong wall – so that you cannot see the installation at all, or it is only accessible in an uncomfortable position. Always check the actual location of the installations before determining the position of the opening – not the assumed one, but the actual one.

3. Doors installed after tiling

The tiler made an opening in the finished tiling, the edges are not sanded, the waterproofing is interrupted, the frame sits on protruding tiles. The result is ugly, non-functional and can allow moisture into the wall.

4. Wrong type of doors for the given environment

Use of bare sheet metal doors (without surface treatment) behind the bathtub leads to rusting within 2–3 years. Use of paper drywall (RB) instead of impregnated (RBI or GKI) in a wet environment leads to swelling of the filling.

5. Forgotten sealing of the gap

The gap between the frame and the tiling is not sealed with silicone, or is sealed with cement-based filler, which cracks. Moisture gets into the structure and after years, mold appears behind the tiling.

Practical tips for common situations in the bathroom

Bathtub with panel back (not masonry): If the back of the bathtub is made of metal or plastic panel, inspection doors are usually not needed – the whole panel can be removed. Inspection doors are only needed if the back is masonry or drywall.

Corner bathtub: For corner bathtubs, there are two backs – front and side. Valves and trap are usually accessible from one side, usually the shorter one. Install doors on the side where the actual installations are located – the other back does not need an access opening.

Sink in a furniture set: Modern bathroom sets have a furniture cabinet with doors, so an inspection opening is not needed. Inspection doors are only considered for masonry, drywall or otherwise firmly closed bases.

Front wall with piping: If behind the front wall (installation wall) is the entire distribution unit (manifold, floor heating valves, etc.), the inspection opening must be dimensioned according to the size of the entire unit, not just one valve. Here, large formats 600×600 mm or 800×800 mm come into consideration.

Aesthetics – how to minimize the visibility of the doors

Customers often ask if inspection doors can be completely "hidden". The answer is: almost yes, using drywall doors that are tiled. These doors have a frame into which a drywall sheet is glued. The tiler sticks the same tiles on it as on the surrounding wall – the difference in grouting is minimal, if done with care and precision.

The result is very aesthetically impressive – the doors are almost invisible, opening with a gentle push or with a key (in the case of a square lock), and they function fully. The disadvantage is the weight – the tiles add weight to the doors and the hinges must be sufficiently strong. Therefore, always check whether the selected product has hinges dimensioned for the weight of the panel with tiles.

With visible sheet metal doors (white RAL 9010), the aesthetic integration is less, but not impossible – the white color can be combined with white tiles or white sanitary fixtures in modern bathrooms. This solution is faster and cheaper to install, but it will always slightly stand out visually compared to the tiled wall.

Maintenance of inspection doors in the bathroom

Inspection doors in the bathroom require minimal, but regular maintenance. A few times a year it is advisable to:

  • Check the functionality of the lock – a snap lock may lose its elasticity over time, and a square lock may rust if not used for a long time
  • Check the silicone seal around the frame – cracks or loss of elasticity of the seal indicate that it is time to renew the silicone
  • Test opening and closing – the doors must not jam, and the panel must sit evenly
  • Check the condition of the hinges – with heavier doors (with plasterboard and tiles), the hinges may loosen over the years; tightening the screws is a simple preventive maintenance

Most frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Must inspection doors behind the bathtub have exactly standard dimensions, or can I choose any size?

Inspection doors are commercially available in standardized dimensions (300×300, 400×400, 500×500, 600×600, 800×800 mm and others). You adjust the opening in the wall to the selected product, not the other way around. If your space requires a non-standard dimension, some manufacturers offer atypical dimensions on request, but this significantly increases the cost. In normal practice, you will always find a suitable standard dimension.

Can I install inspection doors into an already finished tile surface?

Technically yes, but it is more complicated and expensive. You must cut a hole in the tile with a diamond blade, which is noisy and dusty, the edges of the hole are uncertain, and the waterproofing will be interrupted – it must be renewed. We always recommend installing inspection doors before tiling. If you forgot to do it during renovation, it is always better to make a clean opening than to improvise.

What is the difference between inspection doors with fixed hinges and with piano hinges?

Doors with fixed hinges are classic – one side opens, the other is firmly attached. A piano (hidden) hinge allows for a larger opening angle and is less visible. For bathroom applications (bathtub, sink), fixed hinges are fully sufficient and more reliable, because piano hinges must be properly adjusted to prevent doors with a heavy tiled panel from falling down.

Is it necessary to insulate or seal the back side of inspection doors behind the bathtub?

If the space behind the bathtub is warm and dry, special insulation is not necessary. If there is a space behind the tub area where condensation can occur (e.g., cold walls in corners), we recommend applying a vapor barrier or at least a sealing strip around the frame on the side of the space behind the tub. This prevents the draw of moist air through the frame gaps into the wall structure.

Can I really replace a faucet or trap through a 300×300 mm inspection door?

It depends on the specific geometry of the space. Through a 300×300 mm opening, you can close a valve and disconnect flexible hoses. You cannot replace the entire faucet through such an opening, because the faucet is mounted from the outside – from the bathroom, not from behind. A trap can be released and replaced through a 300×300 mm opening, if it is directly next to the opening. If the trap is further away from the opening, or if you need to physically work inside the space, choose a larger size – at least 400×400 mm.

What to do if the inspection doors cannot be closed or the lock does not work?

The most common causes are frame deformation (improper installation or settling of the structure), lock rusting, or loosened hinges. If the doors cannot sit evenly, check the hinges and tighten the screws.
