The first and most common mistake people make is reaching for the first cleaning agent at hand, sometimes even limescale remover acid, and scrubbing the shiny chrome with a rough sponge. The result? Scratched, dull surface, on which limescale and dirt stick even more easily than before. Each surface finish requires a different approach.
Shiny chrome – the most common surface
Chrome finish is durable, but scratches are very visible on it. For regular cleaning, a soft microfiber cloth dampened with warm water is sufficient. If there are white spots from limescale on the surface, use a solution of water and white vinegar (1:1) – apply it to the cloth, not directly to the tap, let it sit for 2 minutes, and gently wipe. Never spray acidic cleaner directly onto the tap – it can seep into joints and damage the seals.
Prohibited cleaning agents for chrome: abrasive cleaning foams and powders (Ajax, Vim), agents with hydrochloric acid (HCl), acetone, solvents, rough wire brushes, or the rough side of a kitchen sponge.
Matte (brushed) stainless steel and dark finishes
These surfaces are even more sensitive to the direction of wiping – always wipe in the direction of the brushing (usually longitudinal), not in a circular motion. No polishing agents intended for chrome should come into contact with a matte surface – they leave visible shiny spots that cannot be removed. Suitable are special cleaners for brushed stainless steel or simply a damp microfiber cloth.
Gold, black, and other special finishes
PVD and electroplated finishes (gold, black, bronze) are the most sensitive. Here applies strictly: only warm water, a soft cloth, and optionally a neutral soap diluted in water. Acids and alkalis chemically damage these surfaces, not just mechanically. Rings and bracelets can leave permanent grooves.
Cleaning the aerator – a small part with a big impact on tap function
The aerator (air mixing filter) is a small screw-on mesh at the end of the tap spout. Precisely here all the limescale settles out of the water as it flows. Clogging of the aerator is one of the most common causes of complaints: "the tap has low pressure," "water sprays sideways," "the water stream is uneven."
Cleaning the aerator is, however, completely trivial and can be done by anyone without special tools:
- Unscrew the aerator from the spout by hand (sometimes you need to use a cloth to protect the surface and pliers), or a special key that Schütte provides with some models.
- Disassemble the aerator into parts – mesh, rubber seal, plastic housing. Keep them in the correct order.
- Put all parts into a glass with white vinegar (or alternatively with a limescale remover) for 30 to 60 minutes. For hard deposits, you can leave it overnight.
- Gently clean the mesh with a toothbrush or a small soft brush – the limescale should come loose.
- Rinse with clean water, check the integrity of the seal, and screw it back on.

Maintenance of the cartridge – the heart of every Schütte faucet

Regular cartridge lubrication
If you notice that the faucet handle is becoming stiff, do not force it – this could damage the ceramic discs. Instead, remove the decorative cap of the handle, unscrew the fixing screw of the handle and set the handle aside. Step 1: Close the angle valves and shut off the water supply
Turn the angle valves clockwise to the stop. Open the faucet and let the remaining water drain from the pipe – this will prevent the sink from overflowing during further work. Check that no water is flowing from the faucet anymore.
Step 2: Unscrewing and soaking the aerator
Unscrew the aerator from the spout (on Schütte faucets it is usually M22 or M24 threaded connection). If it is stuck due to limescale, wrap the spout with a dry cloth and use pliers with flat jaws. Step 3: Cleaning the outer surface
Wipe the entire outer surface of the faucet with a microfiber cloth dampened with water (or with mild soap). For harder limescale, apply a vinegar solution using a damp cloth placed on the surface. - Hydrochloric acid (HCl) – most commonly sold as "limescale remover" – is very aggressive, damages chrome surfaces, brass and rubber seals. It must never be used on Schütte faucets.

In addition, these taps have other components that require regular maintenance – the shower hose, the shower head, and the bathtub/shower switch.
Shower Hose
The shower hose is exposed to torsion and bending, and limescale also accumulates inside. Once a year, remove the hose from the tap and the shower holder, immerse it in a vinegar solution, or pour vinegar through the hose and let it sit for 30 minutes. Shower Head
Most shower heads have silicone nozzles (small rubber protrusions), which can only be cleaned by hand – simply press them and the limescale will fall out. Once every 2–3 months, remove the entire head and soak it in a vinegar solution, just like an aerator. Check that all nozzles are functioning – if one is permanently clogged or damaged, cleaning will not help and the head should be replaced.
Shower/Bathtub Switch (Divertor)
The switch (divertor) is a valve built into the bathtub tap. If the switch starts to return on its own (e.g., after releasing the lever, the water returns to the bathtub by itself), or on the contrary, remains stuck – this is a sign of limescale or a worn seal. Preventive maintenance: once a month, move the switch back and forth several times while the tap is in operation – this prevents it from getting stuck due to limescale. From a maintenance perspective, several special rules apply to thermostatic taps:
- The thermostat is sensitive to impurities – clogging of the filter at the inlet of the thermostatic valve will cause inaccurate temperature regulation or complete blockage. Clean the filters of the thermostatic valve every 1–2 years.
- Never use acidic descaling agents on thermostatic parts – this will damage the thermostatic element (wax or bimetal will lose calibration).
