Why a Schütte tap drips – the anatomy of the problem

Dripping from the spout (aerator) or from around the lever is by far the most common complaint we encounter. At first glance, it seems like a minor issue – after all, it's just a few drops – but in practice, a constantly dripping tap can consume 15 to 20 liters of water per day, which amounts to easily 5,000 to 7,000 liters of unnecessarily paid water per year.

To understand why a tap drips, we must first understand what stops the water flow inside it. In single-lever Schütte taps (as well as in modern two-lever models with ceramic valves), this function is performed by a ceramic cartridge. It is a compact cylindrical mechanism, inside of which two ceramic plates with holes move – one is fixed, the other rotates or slides with the movement of the lever. When the holes are misaligned, water does not flow. When they are aligned, water flows through. Ceramic is a very hard material, resistant to wear, but it has one Achilles' heel: lime scale and larger mechanical impurities.

The ceramic plates are polished to optical flatness from the factory – the contact surface is perfectly smooth to within tenths of a millimeter. When lime scale or a grain of sand gets between them, micro-grooves form on this surface. The tap then no longer allows the plates to seal completely, and water leaks even when the tap is closed.

Causes of dripping by the location of the leak

1. Drips from the spout (aerator) when the tap is closed: This is a classic sign of a damaged or clogged ceramic cartridge. The ceramic plates are dirty, scratched, or simply worn after years of use. 2. Drips from under the lever or from the bottom of the tap: The culprit here is usually a damaged O-ring on the cartridge body or a loose connecting nut of the tap on the sink. O-rings are rubber seals that dry out, harden, and lose elasticity over time – especially if the water is warm or if the tap has not been used for a longer period.

3. Drips from the connecting hose or from the escutcheon: This is not considered a fault of the tap itself, but it is very common and people often confuse it. Lime scale as the main enemy of ceramic

In many regions of Slovakia, we have hard water – values around 20–30 °dH (German degrees of hardness) are not uncommon. Such water leaves a layer of CaCO₃ (calcium carbonate) on the ceramic plates, which gradually disrupts the sealing contact. Practical tip from practice: after removing the cartridge, carefully polish the ceramic plate with a dry cotton cloth. If the dirt is only surface-level (deposits), the plates can be restored. If visible shiny grooves are visible on the dull surface, the cartridge must be replaced – polishing does not remove grooves.

Stiff or jammed lever – causes and repair procedure

The second most common problem: the lever moves with great effort, creaks when changing temperature, or cannot be moved at all. This is a fault that develops slowly – customers usually say that "the tap was always a bit stiff, but it has gotten worse now."

Reason #1 – cartridge clogged with limescale

In areas with hard water, lime deposits also get into the interior of the cartridge, where they jam the movable plate. The lever movement becomes stiff, creaky and uneven. Solution: remove the cartridge and soak it in a solution of citric acid (1 tablespoon per 300 ml of water) or white vinegar for 2–4 hours. After soaking, move the plate by hand – in most cases, the release will be felt immediately.

Reason #2 – cartridge locking nut over-tightened

This is a sneaky error that most often occurs after DIY repairs or after replacing the cartridge. The locking nut, which holds the cartridge in the body of the faucet, must not be over-tightened. If it is over-tightened, it compresses the cartridge excessively, and the movable plate has no clearance for rotation. The correct tightening value is "tight by hand, plus a quarter turn with a wrench" – without using force. Reason #3 – stretched or shifted O-ring

The O-rings on the side of the cartridge must sit precisely in the grooves. If the O-ring is shifted, it enters the movable mechanism and creates friction. This happens during incorrect assembly (the O-ring is twisted) or due to thermal stress (hot water causes the rubber to swell). Solution: when replacing the cartridge, apply a thin layer of silicone lubricant to the O-rings – not vaseline or mineral oils, which damage the rubber.

Reason #4 – shifted or damaged cartridge

If the cartridge does not sit precisely in the axis of the faucet body (for example, it is slightly bent), the movable part of the mechanism hits the wall when moving the lever. This happens with cartridges of the wrong diameter (e.g., you inserted a 35 mm cartridge into a faucet designed for 40 mm) or if the cartridge was rotated during installation and the fixing groove does not align with the pin. Solution: check whether the cartridge sits without wobbling and whether the fixing pin is in the groove.

Weak water pressure – when the problem is the faucet and when it is the plumbing

The third classic problem: you open the faucet fully, but the water flows weakly – the flow is weak, unimpressive, sometimes uneven. Before we start disassembling the faucet, it is essential to clarify where the problem actually lies. From practice, I know that in about half of the cases, customers blamed the faucet, but the problem was elsewhere.

Clogged aerator – the most common cause of weak flow

The aerator is a small mesh at the end of the spout that mixes water with air and creates a soft, non-spraying flow. It is the first filter on the water path from the faucet – and therefore it gets clogged first. Limescale deposits and small particles from the piping system get caught in the mesh and reduce the flow. This is so common that it is recommended to clean the aerator every 6–12 months as a preventive measure.

Cleaning procedure: unscrew the aerator (by hand or with a flathead screwdriver – be careful, line the contact surfaces with a cloth to avoid scratching the chrome), disassemble it into parts, soak the mesh in vinegar solution for 30 minutes, rinse it and reassemble. If the water pressure in the entire house/building is low, the faucet cannot do anything about it. The standard operating pressure for household plumbing should be 2.5–4 bar. Some faucets (including some Schütte models) have built-in pressure limiters that can be adjusted – but if the inlet pressure is 0.8 bar, no adjustment will help. In such a case, the solution is the installation of a booster pump in the plumbing, not the replacement of the faucet.

Water leaking around the base of the faucet (socket) – causes and solutions

Another problem we encounter in practice: water appears on the sink around the base of the faucet, under the socket, or it is dripping from the cabinet under the sink. This is a fault that can develop unnoticed for a long time and cause moisture damage to the sink or cabinet.

Loose locking nut

The faucet is attached to the sink surface using a locking nut from the bottom (using a mounting rod or a faucet wrench). If this nut becomes loose over time – which can happen with faucets where the lever is used with more force – the faucet moves slightly and the base seal loses compression. Solution: turn the handle 90° (if possible), tighten the locking nut, and return the handle to its original position.

Damaged base gasket

The gasket (rubber or silicone washer) between the base of the faucet and the sink surface can harden, compress and lose its sealing properties after years. When installing a new faucet, always replace this gasket – it is a cheap part and a safeguard against leaks. The piston slides in a sleeve, and the sealing is ensured by these rubber rings – typically a double or triple set of different diameters. Solution: disassemble the switch, replace the O-rings, apply silicone lubricant, and reassemble.

  • Step 1 – Identify the location of the fault: Exactly where is the water leaking? From the spout? Under the lever? Around the base? From the connecting hose? This determines the entire next procedure.
  • Step 2 – Turn off the water supply: Before any disassembly, close the shut-off valve under the sink. Never disassemble a valve under pressure.
  • Step 3 – Visual inspection: Unscrew the aerator and inspect the condition of the mesh. Check the supply hose. Examine the base of the valve under good lighting.
  • Step 4 – Remove the cartridge: Unscrew the cover on the lever, remove the locking screw, and pull out the lever. Unscrew the cartridge mounting nut and remove the cartridge. Inspect the ceramic plates, O-rings, and inlet filters.

In practical experience, a simple rule applies: valves where the owner performs minimal regular maintenance last twice as long. A few specific tips:

  • Regular cleaning of the aerator every 6–12 months – 10 minutes of work that prevents most problems with weak flow
  • Descaling the surface of the valve with citric acid-based preparations (not aggressive acids or abrasive cleaners, which damage the chrome surface)
