Common dehumidifier issues and how to resolve them

Dehumidifier is not a maintenance-free device - introduction to the topic of faults

A dehumidifier is a device that is often used practically non-stop in homes and businesses, many times for dozens of hours per week, in an environment with high humidity, dust, and sometimes even cold (cellars, garages, bathrooms, swimming pool halls). It is therefore not surprising that various operational problems appear on it over time - from trivial ones (clogged filter, full water tank) to more serious technical faults of the compressor or electronics. Over the years of sales and service of dehumidifiers, a relatively narrow set of problems has repeatedly occurred in practice, which account for 90% of all complaints and service interventions. This article maps out the most common ones - it explains why they arise, how to recognize them, what you can fix yourself, and when it makes sense to call a service or consider replacing the unit with a new one.

Before we get into specific faults, it is good to recall the basic principle of how a dehumidifier works - without this, you will have difficulty understanding why certain errors manifest exactly as they do. A compressor (condensation) dehumidifier draws air through a cold evaporator, where water vapor condenses, drips into a tank or is drained through a hose, and the heated, dehumidified air is returned to the room through a condenser. If anything in this chain fails - fan, compressor, sensor, condensate drain - it will manifest either as noise, reduced performance, water leakage, or a complete failure.

Dehumidifier is running, but not collecting water (or collecting significantly less)

This is by far the most common complaint - the customer feels that the device is "doing nothing", the tank remains empty or fills extremely slowly. There are several causes, and it is worth going through them systematically, exactly in the order we recommend checking them in service.

Low humidity or low room temperature

Condensation dehumidifiers work best physically at temperatures above 15-18 °C and relative humidity above 50-60%. If the room is, for example, 12 °C and 45% humidity, the device will try, but the amount of condensed water will be minimal - simply there is nothing to condense from. This is not a fault, but a physical limitation of the principle. In cold spaces (unheated cellar, garage, warehouse), an adsorption dehumidifier, which works effectively even at low temperatures, or at least a model with a defrost cycle adapted for cold, is more suitable - this topic is covered in detail in the separate article Condensation vs adsorption dehumidifier - differences and comparison.

Frozen (frosted) evaporator

When operating in a cooler environment (below about 15 °C), frost can form on the evaporator fins instead of liquid condensate. If the device does not have a functional automatic defrost cycle, or this function is damaged (faulty temperature sensor on the evaporator), the fins will gradually freeze completely, airflow will stop, and dehumidification will practically stop. You can recognize this by the fact that the grille feels cold air and there is white ice or frost on the evaporator (if visible through the grille).

Solution: turn off the device, let it fully defrost (possibly several hours at room temperature), check the filter and free airflow. If the problem recurs regularly, it is either due to operation at too low a temperature (then an adsorption type should be considered), or a fault in the defrost sensor/thermostat, which belongs to the hands of the service.

Dirty or clogged filter

The pre-filter captures dust and pet hair. When it gets clogged, the airflow through the evaporator is restricted, performance drops significantly, and in extreme cases, it leads precisely to the freezing of the evaporator described above, because the air does not flow fast enough. This is clearly the most common cause of "weak" dehumidification and also the easiest to fix - it is enough to pull out the filter (usually without tools, from the front or back of the device) and wash it under warm water or vacuum it with a vacuum cleaner. The recommended frequency is once every 2-4 weeks during normal operation in a household, and even once a week during operation in a workshop or dustier environment. A detailed procedure can be found in the article Maintenance and cleaning of air dehumidifiers.

Incorrectly set target humidity or mode

Some models (for example, SECCOREALE EL 11l/24h or SECCOASCIUTTO EL 12l/24h) have an electronic hygrostat with an adjustable target humidity. If it is set, for example, to 60% and the room is currently at 58%, the device logically does not run, or runs only intermittently - this is not a fault, but correct operation of the automation. We recommend checking the setting and possibly lowering the target value to 45-50% when dehumidifying after flooding or in problem areas with mold.

Insufficient performance relative to the size of the room

A very common mistake in selection - a small 10-12 l/24h device placed in a larger, humid space (cellar 40 m², new building during drying of plaster) simply cannot keep up. This is not a device fault, but an incorrect dimensioning. How to correctly choose the performance according to the area and volume of the room is covered in a separate article What dehumidifier capacity do I need according to room size. In larger or more problematic spaces, more powerful models such as SECCOPROF 28l/24h or SECCOULTRA 38l/24h, which can handle a larger volume of air and higher humidity, have proven themselves in practice.

Dehumidifier is noisy or vibrating

Increased noise is the second most common complaint, especially when operating in a bedroom or living room. The causes can be divided into three groups.

Mechanical causes - uneven surface and resonance

A dehumidifier placed on an uneven floor, carpet, or directly against the wall often resonates and vibrations are transferred to the entire cabinet structure, which amplifies the noise. The solution is to place the device on a flat, firm surface, ideally with a small distance from the wall (at least 20-30 cm for air intake and exhaust), and possibly to place it on rubber pads that dampen vibrations. Proper placement is covered in the article Installation and placement of dehumidifier in the room.

Fan - dust and bearing wear

If dust and grease accumulate on the fan blades or on its shaft, it will lead to imbalance and characteristic buzzing or rattling. In older or heavily used devices, the fan motor bearings themselves may also wear out, which is manifested by a squeaky or metallic sound that changes with the speed. In the first case, you can often fix it yourself by carefully cleaning the accessible parts (after disconnecting from the power supply), the second usually requires replacement of the fan unit in the service.

Compressor - typical "buzzing" and startup

Certain level of noise is completely normal with compressor dehumidifiers - it usually ranges around 40-52 dB depending on power and model, which corresponds to a quiet conversation. Problems arise when a new, unusual sound appears - loud knocking, metal rattling, or conversely, the compressor is running, but you can hear "hissing" of the refrigerant. Rattling of the metal housing can often be eliminated by tightening the cover screws, while hissing of the refrigerant indicates a problem in the cooling circuit (e.g., a microscopic leak) and belongs exclusively to the hands of an authorized service, since it is a closed pressure system with refrigerant.

Dehumidifier is leaking - water is escaping outside the tank

This problem looks dramatic (wet floor, puddle under the appliance), but in the vast majority of cases it is a simple cause related to condensate drainage, not a fault in the cooling circuit.

Improperly inserted or overfilled tank

If the tank is not pushed in exactly to the stop, the float mechanism, which is supposed to turn off the device when it is full, may not function reliably, and water may overflow the edge or leak at the place where the tank is not tightly connected to the body of the appliance. The solution is simple - remove the tank, check if it is cracked or deformed, clean it thoroughly from possible deposits, and reinsert it so that it "clicks" into place.

Clogged or improperly routed drain hose

When using a continuous condensate drain hose (instead of emptying the tank), it is critical that the hose always leads downward, without bends or upward sections, into which water could return and flow back into the appliance or around it. If the hose is kinked, pinched by furniture, or its end is higher than the outlet from the appliance, water returns and finds a way out through leaks. The difference between the two methods of drainage, their advantages, and typical errors when connecting the hose are discussed in detail in the article Condensate Drain - Hose vs Tank.

Correct and incorrect routing of the drain hose Correct: smooth downward slope Incorrect: bends, backflow

Condensation on the outer casing due to a large temperature difference

If the room has extremely high humidity (e.g., immediately after flooding, during building drying) and at the same time low temperature, water can condense on the outer casing of the appliance or on the inlet hoses - this can easily be mistaken for a "leak" of the device. It is a common physical phenomenon, not a malfunction, and with the gradual reduction of humidity in the room, this effect disappears.

Cracked tank or damaged seal

In older or mechanically stressed appliances (drop, impact during handling), the plastic tank may crack or the rubber seal between the tank and the body may be damaged. This can usually be solved by ordering a replacement part, and in the case of cheaper models, it is sometimes worth considering the economics of repair versus purchasing a new appliance.

Dehumidifier does not turn on, turns off by itself, or the indicator blinks

Electronic and electrical faults are less common than mechanical problems with humidity, but when they occur, the customer often cannot deal with them on their own and it is necessary to know at least basic diagnostics before calling a service.

Device does not start at all

The first step is always to check the most trivial things - functionality of the socket (test with another appliance), the state of the fuse or circuit breaker in the distribution box, and whether the tank is properly inserted (many models have a safety contact that prevents starting when the tank is pulled out or improperly inserted). This solves surprisingly a large percentage of reported "telephone faults".

Device turns off by itself after a few minutes

If the appliance starts, runs for a while, and then turns off by itself, the most common cause is the activation of the compressor's safety thermal or pressure fuse due to overheating - for example, due to insufficient distance from the wall, a clogged filter, or operation in an environment that is too hot for the manufacturer's upper limit (usually around 32-35 °C). After turning off, it is necessary to let the appliance cool down for at least 10-15 minutes and turn it off/on using the main switch, not just the remote control.

Blinking indicators and error codes

Modern models with electronic displays (e.g., SECCOREALE EL or SECCOASCIUTTO EL) signal faults with error codes or blinking icons - typically a tank icon (full/incorrectly inserted), a snowflake icon (a defrost cycle is in progress, it is not an error), or a general error icon indicating a sensor problem. The exact meaning of the codes can always be found in the manual for the specific model, as they vary between manufacturers and models. If the error code appears repeatedly even after removing the obvious cause (emptying the tank, restarting), we recommend contacting the seller or service to rule out a sensor fault.

Odor from the dehumidifier - musty or "chemical" smell

An unpleasant odor appears after prolonged operation without maintenance, especially in humid areas such as a bathroom, basement, or space after flooding.

Musty, musty smell

It most often occurs due to the proliferation of microorganisms (bacteria, mold) on the wet evaporator, in the filter, or in the tank, where water stands for a long time without being emptied. The solution is to thoroughly clean the appliance - remove and wash the filter, drain and disinfect the tank (a diluted vinegar or regular disinfectant for plastics is sufficient, followed by thorough rinsing with clean water), and if possible, also carefully clean the accessible evaporator fins with a soft cloth or air stream. Prevention is simple - regularly empty the tank, do not let water stand in it for more than a few days, and clean the filter regularly according to the recommendations in the maintenance article.

Chemical or "burnt" smell

If you smell something more like a burnt or electrical odor from the appliance, it is a more serious sign - it may indicate motor overheating, a faulty capacitor in the electronics, or a problem with the wire insulation. In such a case, we recommend immediately disconnecting the appliance from the power supply and not attempting to use or repair it yourself - it is a safety risk and requires professional service intervention or an assessment of whether the repair is still worth it.

Condensation vs. adsorption dehumidifiers - different types of faults

It is worth knowing that both principles have their own typical "weak points" that differ.

Type of faultCompressor (condensation)Adsorption
Frosting of the evaporator at low temperatureFrequent risk below 15 °CDoes not occur, operates without a cooling circuit
Noise from the compressorCommon property, 40-52 dBUsually quieter, noise only from the fan
Energy consumption at low humidityPerformance and efficiency decreaseMore stable performance, but higher consumption
Compressor lifespanTypically several years, a wear partNo compressor, other wear parts (heating element, rotor)
Refrigerant leakPossible, a service issueDoes not occur

A more detailed comparison of both principles, including recommendations on which type is more suitable in which situations, can be found in the article Condensing vs. adsorption dehumidifier - differences and comparison. In practice, for a standard heated household (living room, bedroom, bathroom), the condensing type is clearly the first choice, for example the compact SECCO 11l/24h, while for colder spaces such as an unheated cabin, garage or warehouse, the adsorption principle is often more advantageous.

Performance at different room temperatures performance temperature compressor adsorption 5°C 30°C

Preventive maintenance - how to avoid most problems

Experience from service clearly shows that at least two thirds of all resolved cases would not occur at all if basic regular maintenance was followed. The recommended procedure is as follows:

Regular maintenance procedure for dehumidifier 1. Disconnect from the power 2. Remove and clean the filter 3. Empty and clean the tank 4. Check the hose 5. Check the distance from the wall (min. 20-30 cm), flat base and free air vents

We also recommend checking the overall condition of the device once per season (for example in spring before the period of higher humidity) - tightness of the tank, damage to the power cable, functionality of the remote control and, above all, whether the performance corresponds to what the device delivered at the time of purchase. A significant drop in performance after cleaning the filter and tank may indicate a gradual loss of refrigerant or wear of the compressor, which should be addressed by a service technician before a complete failure occurs. A detailed step-by-step guide to cleaning, including recommended cleaning agents, can be found in the article Maintenance and cleaning of air dehumidifier.

When to fix the problem yourself and when to call a service

Not every problem requires professional intervention, but it is also not advisable to attempt to interfere with the cooling circuit or electronics on your own. A general division:

  • Can be solved on your own: clogged filter, full or improperly inserted tank, kinked drain hose, uneven placement causing vibrations, unpleasant odors from an uncleaned tank, frozen evaporator (it is sufficient to let it thaw and check the cause).
  • Requires service or professional consultation: refrigerant leak or hissing from the compressor, burnt/chemical odor, repeated error codes even after restarting, cracked tank or damaged seal, noisy or squeaking fan bearing, the device does not start at all even after checking the socket and fuse.

With older or cheaper devices, it is always a good idea to compare the estimated repair cost (especially for a compressor or cooling circuit failure) with the cost of a new device - for mid-range models, compressor repair is often not economically viable and it is more advantageous to invest in a new device with current warranty.

Malfunctions according to the type of use - apartment, basement, pool

Typical malfunctions vary significantly depending on where the dehumidifier is used, which is discussed in detail in the article Dehumidifier for apartment, basement or pool - what is the difference. In an apartment or bedroom, the most common issues are noise and setting of the target humidity, in a basement or garage, problems with freezing of the evaporator at low temperatures and the need for more frequent cleaning due to dust prevail, while in pool halls we encounter higher demands on material resistance to a chlorinated environment and more intense wear of seals due to almost continuous operation. In such demanding applications, more powerful and robust models have proven themselves in practice, for example SECCOULTRA 38l/24h, which can handle higher loads without being constantly at the limit of their capabilities - which is, by the way, one of the best ways to prevent malfunctions, as a device running constantly at 100% capacity wears out faster than one that has a performance reserve.

Impact of energy consumption on fault diagnosis

An interesting, yet often overlooked indicator of a malfunction is an unusual increase in electricity consumption without a corresponding increase in dehumidification performance. If you notice that the device is running significantly longer than usual and the tank is filling up more slowly, it may indicate an emerging problem with the cooling circuit, a worn compressor or a dirty heat exchanger that is slowing down efficiency. Approximate values of normal consumption and a way to calculate actual operating costs can be found in the article How much does dehumidifier operation cost and energy consumption - comparing current consumption with these reference values will help you detect a problem before it manifests as a complete device failure.

Common questions about dehumidifier malfunctions

Why does my dehumidifier turn off after a few minutes of operation and restart only after a while?

This is usually normal behavior of the thermal or pressure protection of the compressor, which prevents its damage from overheating or too frequent switching. Check the distance from the wall, filter cleanliness and room temperature - if it is below the upper operating limit and the filter is clean, it is likely a normal protective cycle, not a malfunction.

Is it normal to feel warm air coming from the dehumidifier?

Yes, condensing dehumidifiers slightly heat the air in the room during operation (the compressor and condenser produce heat), usually by 1-3 °C during prolonged operation. It is not a malfunction, but a normal side effect of the principle.

Why is there water appearing at the bottom of the device, even though the tank is not full?

The most common causes are an incorrectly inserted water tank, a cracked seal, or condensation on the casing due to a large temperature difference between the room and the device. Check the correct positioning of the tank and the condition of the seal; if the problem persists, contact the service.

Can I run the dehumidifier continuously for 24 hours a day?

Most models are designed for continuous operation, but we recommend periodically checking the filter and the tank (or having a permanent drain hose connected) and not neglecting regular cleaning, as in continuous operation the filter and evaporator fins get dirty more quickly.

How do I know that the problem is actually the compressor and not something else?

Typical signs of a compressor failure are: unusual noise coming directly from its area (buzzing, knocking), a significant drop in performance despite a clean filter and normal room temperature, or a smell of refrigerant or hissing. In such a case, we recommend not to continue operation and to contact the service, as this involves intervention in the sealed refrigeration circuit.

Is it worth repairing an older dehumidifier, or is it better to buy a new one?

It depends on the age, original price of the device, and the type of failure. For simple problems (filter, tank, hose, sensor), repair is always worth it. In the case of a compressor or refrigeration circuit failure on an older device in a lower price category, it is usually more economical to choose a new model with current warranty and lower energy consumption.

Summary in conclusion

The majority of dehumidifier issues we commonly encounter in practice are not related to serious technical defects, but to insufficient or incorrect maintenance - a clogged filter, a full or improperly inserted tank, an improperly routed drain hose, or an unsuitable placement of the device. Regular, even simple care (cleaning the filter every 2-4 weeks, regularly emptying the tank, checking the distance from the wall) can extend the life of the device by years and prevent most complaints. Real technical problems - issues with the compressor, refrigeration circuit, or electronics - are relatively rare in comparison, but if they do occur, they should not be underestimated or dealt with on your own beyond the scope of routine maintenance. When choosing a new dehumidifier, whether as a replacement after an irreparable failure or for the first purchase, it is worth choosing a model that corresponds to the size and character of the space - in the range you will find compact solutions for smaller rooms as well as more powerful models for demanding environments in the entire category dehumidifiers, where you can directly compare the individual parameters.
