Its principle is simple and reliable – an infrared sensor detects hand movement, the microprocessor sends a signal to the pump and a dose of soap or gel goes directly into the waiting palm without any contact. Despite this, in practice, even with quality products such as the range of Donner touchless dispensers, problems occasionally arise that cause the device to stop working properly or completely. Most of these problems have nothing to do with a manufacturing defect in the product – they are common operational situations that anyone can resolve themselves, without professional intervention and without the need to return the product.

In this article, we will systematically and in depth look at what are really the most common problems with touchless dispensers, why they occur, how to reliably diagnose them and, above all, how to solve them. 1. Dispenser does not respond at all – diagnosis from the basics

This is the most alarming situation users encounter. The hand approaches, but nothing happens. No sound, no blinking, no dose. The first reflex is to think the device is broken. Reality is different – in the vast majority of cases it is something much simpler.

Dead or weakly charged batteries (or a dead USB battery)

This is by far the most common reason for complete non-functionality. A touchless dispenser is a device that works continuously – the sensor regularly emits and receives infrared impulses even when no one is approaching with a hand. This consumes energy continuously, not only at the moment of dispensing. In battery-powered models (most commonly 4× AA or 3× AAA), batteries are usually depleted in 3 to 8 months, depending on the intensity of use and the quality of the batteries. With cheap no-name alkaline batteries, it can be even less.

Solution: Replace the batteries with new alkaline batteries from reputable manufacturers (Duracell, Energizer, GP). Do not mix old and new batteries, do not insert batteries from different manufacturers or with different levels of charge. In models with USB charging, check the condition of the built-in battery – connect the charging cable for several hours before the first use again. Batteries inserted incorrectly

It seems trivial, but in practice it happens surprisingly often – especially after the first insertion of batteries or after their replacement. Polarity must be strictly observed. If even one battery is reversed, the circuit is not closed and the device does not work. Check each cell individually according to the diagram printed in the battery compartment.

Battery compartment contacts are oxidized or dirty

In a bathroom environment with high humidity, the contacts in the battery compartment can be covered with a thin layer of oxides or salts. The contacts may look shiny, but have increased resistance that prevents current flow. Solution: gently clean the metal contacts with a dry cotton swab or fine sandpaper (grit 400+), or with a pencil (graphite is a good conductor and also a cleaner). In case of strong corrosion, use a specialized contact spray.

2. Dispenser dispenses soap continuously or randomly without hand approaching

The opposite extreme – the device dispenses soap without you approaching it, or starts dispensing repeatedly immediately after each other. This is a typical symptom of problems with the sensor or its surroundings.

Interfering surrounding conditions of the sensor

The infrared sensor works with a wavelength of around 940 nm. In this part of the spectrum, some external light sources can interfere – direct sunlight falling on the sensor through a window, strong halogen lamps pointing directly at the dispenser or intense LED spotlights with a rich IR component. If the dispenser is mounted in such a way that the sensor is pointing directly at a window or a strong light source, false triggering can occur, especially at certain times of the day.

Solution: Remount or rotate the dispenser so that the sensor does not point directly at a light source. If remounting is not possible, try placing some kind of shading element in front of the sensor. Also check whether false activations occur only at a certain time of day (morning or afternoon sunlight through the window) – this clearly indicates light interference.

Reflective surface too close to the sensor

If the dispenser is mounted directly above a sink made of glossy ceramic or stainless steel, or if it is placed very close to a glossy wall, the sensor may detect a reflection of its own infrared impulse from these surfaces and interpret it as the presence of a hand. This causes continuous or periodic dispensing without user intervention.

Solution: Check the minimum mounting distance from surrounding surfaces – most models require at least 15 cm of free space in front of the sensor. Ideally, mount the dispenser so that the longest possible open distance without reflective surfaces is in front of the sensor. Dirty or wet sensor surface

Water droplets, soap residue, or lime scale deposits on the plastic window of the sensor can scatter or reflect the infrared beam back. The device then "sees" an obstacle where there is none. Solution: Gently wipe the surface of the sensor window with a clean dry cloth. Do not use aggressive cleaning agents that could stain or scratch the transparent plastic.

3. Dispenser does not respond or responds unreliably – weak sensor sensitivity

The device is working, but you have to bring your hand very close, sometimes it requires several attempts, or it only responds from certain angles. This is a different problem than complete malfunction.

Insufficient activation zone – incorrect hand position

Touchless dispensers have a defined activation zone – usually a cone or hemisphere in front of the sensor nozzle with a range typically of 5 to 10 cm. If you bring your hand in from the side, from below, or at an incorrect angle, the sensor may not detect it. A regular user may interpret this as a fault, but it is only a matter of incorrect usage technique. Bring your hands directly from above (for countertop models) or directly in front (for wall-mounted models), always perpendicular to the sensor axis.

Dirty sensor window – more severe case

If there is a stronger lime scale deposit, a thicker layer of soap residue, or even scratches from cleaning with aggressive agents on the sensor window, the sensor sensitivity significantly decreases. Even a few tenths of a millimeter thick layer of lime scale can absorb a significant part of the infrared radiation. Solution: Gently soak a swab in a solution of citric acid (1 teaspoon per glass of water) and place it on the sensor window for 5 minutes. Low batteries – the sensor works, but weakly

Partially depleted batteries may not cause complete failure, but the sensor range can decrease from the usual 8 cm to 2–3 cm. The device therefore responds, but only when you place your hand almost directly on the nozzle. This is a warning sign that it is time to replace the batteries before the dispenser completely stops working.

4. Clogged nozzle or pump – soap does not flow or flows weakly

The device is working (blinks, makes sound), but no soap comes out of the nozzle, or it only dispenses a very small drop. This is a classic sign of a clogged dispensing system.

Dried soap in the nozzle

This is by far the most common mechanical problem. After a longer period of non-use (holiday, seasonal closure of the area), the soap in the nozzle dries out and forms a solid plug. Gel soap and thick liquid soap are more prone to this than thin liquid soaps. Solution: Soak the nozzle in warm water for 10 to 15 minutes. On most models, the nozzle is removable – if the design allows it, unscrew the entire nozzle and immerse it in a glass of warm water. After soaking, try to flush water through the nozzle under pressure (for example, using a syringe without a needle). After cleaning, thoroughly test the nozzle before refilling the dispenser with soap.

Clogged suction tube or pump

If the problem persists even after cleaning the nozzle, the clogging may be deeper – in the discharge hose or directly in the pump. When switching from one type of soap to another (for example, from liquid to gel), incompatible components may mix in the pump and form a deposit or gel that blocks the movement of the pumping piston. Solution: Empty the tank, fill it with clean warm water, and activate the device several times – the pump will pump the water, which will soften and flush out the residue. Repeat 2–3 times. Wrong type of soap – too thick or too thin

Each dispenser is designed for a specific viscosity of the medium. If you use soap that is too thick (for example, a cream balm instead of gel soap), the pump will not be able to suck it up and dispense it properly. The opposite extreme – too thin a medium – can cause the soap to run off on its own and the nozzle to drip even without activation. When choosing soap, follow the recommended viscosity in the instructions. 5. Soap leakage – Dispenser drips or leaks

If the dispenser drips outside the dosing cycle or leaves soap puddles under the nozzle, it may be due to several reasons.

Check valve is not functioning properly

Modern touchless dispensers are equipped with a check valve that prevents backflow and dripping after the dose is completed. If the valve is dirty or damaged, the soap may seep back and drip. Solution: Clean the valve according to the procedure in the manual – usually, several "dry" activations after rinsing with clean water are sufficient. If the valve is physically damaged, it may be necessary to replace the pump module.

Overfilled tank

When filling the tank, it is important not to exceed the maximum marked level (MAX line). Overfilling causes the suction tube to be permanently submerged in soap and the hydrostatic pressure pushes it out even without activating the pump. Always fill up to the MAX line at most.

Pump body not tightened properly

After cleaning or changing the soap, the pump body may not be properly screwed into the tank. Soap then runs down along the thread. Solution: Empty the dispenser, unscrew the pump, wipe the gasket and thread dry, and then tighten it again – gently but firmly. Do not over-tighten the thread with excessive force.

6. Incorrect dose size – Too much or too little soap

The dispenser is working, but the dose is clearly different from what it should be – either it dispenses too large a dose and wastes soap, or it only gives a minimal drop that is not enough to wash hands.

Adjusting the dose size

Most touchless dispensers, including Donner models, allow you to adjust the dose size using a switch or button – usually three levels (small / medium / large dose). This switch is usually located on the bottom, on the back wall, or inside the battery compartment. Check the switch position and adjust it as needed. Many users find the device set to the maximum dose right out of the box, which is practical for gels but unnecessarily wasteful for diluted liquid soaps.

Air bubble in the pump system

After the first use following filling or soap replacement, there may be an air bubble in the suction tube that prevents a full dose. Activate the device several times in a row over the sink until the air is purged from the tube and the doses stabilize to the correct size. This is a common occurrence and not a malfunction.

Soap is running low – Low level

When the tank is almost empty, the suction tube draws soap together with air and the doses are irregular and small. This is normal behavior. Refill the tank with soap.

7. Dispenser turns off by itself or blinks – Signal behavior

Many users are alarmed when their dispenser starts blinking or seems to "restart." In reality, it is communication signals the device uses to inform about its status.

LED blinking – What do the patterns mean?

Each Donner model has its specific set of LED signals. Despite this, there are several general rules that are repeated across most touchless dispensers:

  • Short blink with each dose – Normal state, confirmation of sensor and pump activation.
  • Rapid repeated blinking after battery change – Initialization sequence, the device is starting up; wait 5–10 seconds.
  • Slow blinking every few seconds without dispensing – Most often a signal of low battery capacity; replace the batteries.
  • Continuous blinking or red blinking – Error state; check batteries, nozzle, and soap level.
  • No blinking at all during activation – The device has no power or the pump is not functioning.

8. Mechanical and installation issues

Dispenser is detaching or falling off the wall

The adhesion of double-sided tape depends on temperature, humidity, and the cleanliness of the surface. In a bathroom, where temperature and humidity fluctuate, adhesion may gradually decrease. During installation, it is essential to degrease the wall surface with isopropyl alcohol, wait at least 72 hours before loading the dispenser, and not exceed the maximum weight for which the tapes are dimensioned. The dispenser is mounted too high or too low

The ergonomic mounting height of a wall-mounted dispenser is usually 110 to 130 cm from the floor for adults, or lower in areas for children. If the dispenser is mounted too high, the sensor may not detect the hand in a natural position under the nozzle, and users must raise their hands unnaturally. On the contrary, a too low position may cause the soap dose to not fall properly into the palm.

9. Issues specific to gel and liquid soap

Soap separation after long standing

Certain soaps – especially those with natural ingredients and lower preservative content – may separate after long standing in the reservoir. The top layer becomes thin, the bottom thick. The pump then dispenses inconsistently. Always shake the soap bottle thoroughly before refilling and, in the case of longer periods of dispenser inactivity (more than 2 weeks), mix the contents of the reservoir before the first use.

Soap foams too much or too little

If you use soap with a high surfactant content in a model designed for gel, excessive foaming may occur, which can block the nozzle or cause the foam to push the soap back into the pump. 10. Device reset and restoring factory settings

If you have tried all the steps mentioned above and the dispenser still does not work properly, the last step before contacting service is usually resetting the device. Most touchless dispensers do not have a special reset button, but the procedure is standard:

  • Remove all batteries (or disconnect the USB cable).
  • Press and hold the power on/off button (if it exists) for 10 seconds to discharge the capacitor and clear the microprocessor's temporary memory.
  • Wait 30 seconds without power.
  • Insert new batteries and wait for the LED initialization sequence.
  • Check the dose setting and perform testing.

This procedure resolves many "soft" faults, in which the microprocessor ends up in an error state, for example after a power outage or after too rapid repeated activation of the sensor.

Preventive maintenance – how to avoid faults

Experienced technicians and installers know that most faults of touchless dispensers can be prevented by regular and proper maintenance. A few universal rules:

  • Regular battery replacement – do not wait until they are completely depleted; in intensively used environments (office bathrooms, receptions), plan for preventive replacement every 3–4 months.
  • Clean the nozzle once a month – short rinsing with clean water after each reservoir refill significantly extends the life of the dispensing system.
  • Do not use strongly abrasive or aggressive cleaning agents on the exterior surface or on the sensor window – they can damage the surface and sensor optics.
  • Empty the reservoir during longer absences – soap left in the dispenser for several weeks can dry out and clog the system.
  • Check the dispenser's contact with water – the device should not be mounted in such a way that water from the sink or shower sprays directly onto it; most models have IPX4 protection, meaning protection against splashing, not submersion.

There are situations where self-diagnosis and common solutions are not enough and it is time to contact the seller or to file a complaint. A complaint is appropriate if:

  • The device does not operate at all (the pump does not work at all) even after battery replacement and system cleaning.
  • The LED does not react at all – not even after inserting newly purchased batteries.
  • Liquids are leaking from the body of the device (not the nozzle), indicating a faulty sealing system from the factory.
  • The sensor does not react after thorough cleaning, resetting, and verifying that the surrounding light conditions are correct.
  • The device is in a physically damaged condition due to a reason not caused by improper use.

Always document the fault (photo, video), attach the purchase receipt, and prepare a brief description of the steps you have already tried before filing a complaint. This significantly speeds up the complaint process.

Why does my dispenser stop dispensing after a few weeks without use?

The most common cause is dried soap in the nozzle or in the dispensing hose. Soap in contact with air dries and forms a solid clog. Solution: soak the nozzle in warm water for 10–15 minutes and then activate the dispenser several times over the sink. The dispenser is dispensing soap by itself without me even getting close – what should I do?

This is most likely a false sensor activation. The cause could be direct sunlight or strong artificial lighting hitting the sensor, a reflective surface (shiny sink, flooring) too close in front of the sensor, or water droplets on the sensor window. Turn the dispenser so that the sensor does not face a window or a direct light source. Clean the sensor window with a dry cloth.

Can I use any liquid soap or disinfectant in my dispenser?

Not all dispensers are compatible with all media. Problems can occur with overly thick cream-based lotions, soaps with coarse abrasive particles (peelings), highly alcoholic disinfectants (high alcohol content can degrade plastic seals), or foaming soaps in models designed for gel. How long do batteries last in touch-free dispensers?

Battery life depends on usage intensity and battery quality. In a household with several uses per day, high-quality alkaline batteries (AA) typically last 6–12 months. Lower quality batteries or a sensor exposed to interference (constantly emitting and receiving signals, which increases consumption) will significantly shorten battery life.

After changing the batteries, the dispenser blinks but does not dispense – what does this mean?

Blinking after inserting new batteries is usually a normal initialization sequence – wait 10–15 seconds. If blinking continues without dispensing, it may be a clogged pump (try cleaning), an incorrectly positioned on/off switch (check whether the device is turned on), or an air bubble in the suction tube (activate the device several times until the bubble is expelled).
