If the pressure in the network is higher than 6 bar (which can happen, for example, in lower floors of multi-story buildings connected directly to a branch without a pressure-reducing valve), it is recommended to install a pressure-reducing valve before the apartment's piping. Excessively high pressure accelerates the wear of seals and cartridges, which shortens the lifespan of the faucet.

On the other hand, at low pressures below 1.5 bar (for example, with private wells or supply from pressure tanks), the flow may be insufficient and some functions – especially thermostatic cartridges – may not work properly, as they require a minimum pressure difference between the cold and hot branches.

4. What is the difference between a 35 mm and 40 mm cartridge?

The ceramic cartridge is the heart of every single-lever faucet. Schütte uses cartridges of different diameters in various models – most commonly 35 mm and 40 mm, although you may also encounter 25 mm cartridges in smaller models.

35 mm cartridge is standard for common sink faucets. The standardized size means that replacement cartridges are easily available and their replacement is simple. Most DIY plumbers can do it themselves.

40 mm cartridge is used in more robust models – kitchen faucets with higher flow, bathtub combinations, or shower faucets. The larger diameter means a larger area of ceramic discs, resulting in higher water flow and longer lifespan with the same number of uses.

5. What is the connection size (thread) and how to handle it during installation?

This is a question that often takes customers the most time – unnecessarily, because it is a fairly systematic matter. Schütte taps use internationally standardized threads:

  • G 1/2" (BSP) – the most common inlet thread on the body of the tap, corresponding to a 15 mm pipe diameter. This thread is used in almost all basin, bath, and shower taps.
  • G 3/8" – the thread of flexible supply hoses (so-called flexi), which connect the angle valve (tap under the basin) to the tap. The standard length of flexi hoses is 30, 40, or 50 cm.

6. Is there a difference between a single-lever and a double-lever Schütte tap?

Yes, and not only aesthetic. The differences are functional, ergonomic, and maintenance-related. Summary:

Single-lever taps (so-called mixing taps) have one control lever that moves the ceramic cartridge – left/right regulates temperature, up/down regulates flow. This is convenient, fast, and functionally better for routine handwashing. Repairs are generally cheaper, as you only replace one insert (cold or hot). However, setting the temperature is less convenient – you have to combine both taps.

7. What is a thermostatic faucet and when is it worth it?

A thermostatic faucet has a built-in thermostat that maintains the set water temperature regardless of pressure or temperature fluctuations in the network. It is practically an ideal solution for shower systems, where you don't want to adjust the temperature every time, and where a 5°C increase in temperature can be unpleasant or dangerous.

The principle works based on a thermostatic element – usually wax or bimetal – which automatically adjusts the ratio of cold and hot water when input parameters change. Most Schütte thermostats have a locking point at 38°C (physiologically safe temperature), and to set a higher temperature, you need to press the safety button.

When is a thermostatic faucet worth it? Almost always for shower systems in households with children, seniors, or social service facilities, where the risk of scalding is present. Also in homes with solar heating, where the temperature of hot water varies depending on sunlight – the thermostat compensates for this fluctuation and you always have the same shower temperature.

Disadvantage: higher purchase price and slightly more complex service. A thermostatic cartridge is a more specific part and its replacement can be more expensive than with a standard single-lever cartridge.

8. How do I know if a Schütte faucet needs service or part replacement?

From experience, I know that customers wait a long time before deciding to repair – and in the meantime, water drips into the sink, their bill increases, and other materials wear out. Signals you should react to:

  • Dripping from the outlet when the lever is closed – almost always a worn cartridge or O-ring seal in the cartridge. Solution: replace the cartridge (5–15 minutes of work for a skilled DIYer).
  • Dripping under the lever or from under the faucet – damaged O-ring on the faucet body, a loose nut, or a cracked supply hose seal.
  • Stiff or jammed lever – clogged cartridge by limescale or corrosion. First, try to remove the cartridge and soak it in a vinegar solution for 30–60 minutes.
  • Weak flow – clogged mesh filter (aerator) or clogged filters on the supply angle valves. Solution: remove and clean the aerator.
  • Unstable temperature with a thermostatic model – worn thermostatic element, or clogged capillary by limescale.

9. How long does a Schütte faucet last and what does it depend on?

The lifespan of a water faucet depends on three main factors: water quality, operating pressure, and usage intensity. For a typical 4-person household with average water hardness (up to 25°dH) and pressure of 3 bar, the following approximate values apply:

  • Faucet body (brass or alloy) – 15–25 years without need for replacement with proper maintenance

  • O-rings and rubber seals – 5–10 years depending on water quality

In areas with very hard water (over 30°dH, common in many parts of Slovakia), the lifespan of cartridges is reduced to 5–7 years. 10. Can I install a Schütte faucet myself, or do I need a professional?

It depends on the situation. Replacing a faucet with a new one – in the same location, with the same connection dimensions – is a task that every skilled DIYer can handle. You need a hose wrench, sealing tape (Teflon), possibly new flexible hoses, and half an hour of time.

When to call a professional:

  • When relocating the plumbing (new position of the faucet on the wall)

11. Are spare parts for Schütte faucets available in Slovakia?

12. What surface finishes are available and how to care for them?

Schütte offers faucets in several surface finishes, each with different cleaning and maintenance requirements:

  • Chrome (shiny) – the most common, durable, and easy to clean. For cleaning, regular non-abrasive cleaning products are sufficient. Fine scratches are less visible on shiny chrome than on matte finishes.
  • Matte black (Black Matt) – a trendy finish, popular in modern bathrooms. However, be careful: it is more sensitive to limescale and fingerprint marks. An under-counter faucet has the body built into the wall (so-called rough-in box, rough installation), only the control plate and outlet remain visible. The result looks neat and modern – ideal for minimalist bathrooms. Disadvantage: servicing in case of failure is more expensive, as you need to access the body of the faucet through the wall. Therefore, it is important that the installation is flawless from the beginning and the body is accessible through a maintenance opening.

Schütte offers both types. When choosing an under-counter system, always check whether the rough-in box (rough installation) is universal or tied to specific control plates – some systems are closed (proprietary) and cannot be combined with control plates of another brand.

14. What is the warranty period and what does the warranty on Schütte faucets cover?

The standard legal warranty period is 24 months from the date of purchase. Schütte offers an extended manufacturer's warranty on many of its products – most commonly 5 years, and up to 10 years for premium models. Specific warranty conditions are stated in the product documentation.

What a warranty repair typically does not cover:

  • Damage caused by improper installation (e.g., using a wrench on a chrome body)
  • Wear caused by extremely hard water or excessive pressure

15. What to do if a Schütte faucet drips only occasionally (intermittently)?

This is a tricky case that I have encountered several times. Intermittent dripping – for example, only after a hot shower or only at night – usually has two causes:

1. Thermal expansion – when hot water heats up, the material of the cartridge and seals expands. If the cartridge is at the end of its life, this expansion causes temporary leaks. Solution: replace the cartridge.

2. Back pressure from a boiler or combi boiler – when water expands in the heater (thermal expansion), the check valve on the hot water supply may release water back through the faucet. This manifests as "weeping" from the outlet without any contact with the faucet. Solution: check the check valve on the hot water supply, or install an expansion tank on the hot water system.

Both of these issues can be diagnosed without replacing the entire faucet – and it is good to address them before the occasional dripping becomes permanent.

Can I use a Schütte faucet with a low-pressure boiler (0.5 bar)?

Standard Schütte faucets are designed for a minimum pressure of 1 bar. At 0.5 bar from a non-pressurized boiler (so-called feed-and-fill boiler), it is necessary to use a special faucet marked "for low pressure" or "for non-pressurized heaters". These faucets have an asymmetric valve – hot water flows directly from the boiler under natural pressure, while cold water is regulated through the outlet valve. Do not use a standard pressure-balancing faucet on a non-pressurized boiler – it may cause malfunction or backflow into the boiler.

Why is the water from my new Schütte faucet grey or cloudy?

This is a common phenomenon for the first few minutes after installing a new faucet. The cause is leftover installation materials (Teflon, seals), impurities in the supply, or air in the pipes. It is sufficient to let the water run for 2–5 minutes to flush the system. If the cloudiness persists, check the filter on the faucet inlet or the filter on the angle valves – there may be impurities in the supply.

Is it possible to extend the outlet arm of a Schütte faucet if the sink is too small?

The outlet arm is usually a fixed part of the faucet and cannot be extended without replacing the entire outlet body. Some Schütte models have a replaceable outlet (screwed aerator body), where you can mount an outlet extender or swivel joint. Alternatively, the solution is to choose another model of faucet with a longer arm – Schütte offers models with arm lengths from 80 to 220 mm. When choosing, I always recommend measuring the distance from the center of the outlet to the sink wall and from the base of the faucet to the edge of the sink.

Can a Schütte faucet be connected directly to a copper pipe system?

Yes, but with a warning: direct contact between the brass body of the faucet and copper piping is acceptable in terms of galvanic corrosion, as both metals are close in the electrochemical series. It is important to use the correct seals and sealing tape that are resistant to both copper and brass. A problem may arise when transitioning from copper to galvanized steel piping – in this case, it is necessary to insert an electrical isolation joint to prevent galvanic corrosion. Why does a new Schütte faucet make a sound (whistling or knocking) when regulating the flow?

Whistling when the flow is partially open is caused by vibrations of the ceramic disks in the cartridge during turbulent water flow. The most common cause in a new faucet is excessively high network pressure (over 5 bar) – the solution is to install a pressure-reducing valve. Another cause: an improperly seated cartridge during installation – try removing the cartridge, cleaning the seat, and reinstalling it. Knocking (so-called water hammer) is a different issue and is related to rapid closure of the lever or a spring effect in the piping – the solution is a water hammer arrester on the supply.

Can I install an aerator of another brand on a Schütte faucet?

Most aerators on the market have a standardized thread M22×1 (external, for mounting into the outlet) or M24×1 (for mounting on the outlet). As long as the thread fits, you can use an aerator of another brand. However, you should check the length of the aerator – an aerator that is too long may protrude or interfere with the water flow in an undesirable way. I recommend aerators with a flow rate of 5–8 l/min for water saving (eco-aerators), which are compatible with network pressures from 2 bar.
