Why to take care of a bathroom faucet?

A water faucet is a household component that is touched ten, twenty, or even more times a day. A bathroom faucet opens and closes the water supply every time you wash your hands, take a shower, or have a bath. A kitchen faucet is subjected to even greater stress. Despite this, most people do not take special care of the faucet – they wipe it with a cloth, and that's all. Then they are surprised when, after five years, it starts dripping, the lever becomes stiff, or the water flow weakens to an unusable trickle.

Practical experience speaks clearly: faucets that receive at least minimal regular attention last twice, sometimes even three times longer than completely neglected faucets. This also applies to high-quality faucets from the Balletto series, where the quality of components is higher than in cheap products. Even the best cartridge will not last long if it is buried in limescale and impurities from the pipes for years.

This article will show you how to systematically care for Balletto faucets – from daily cleaning of surfaces through regular removal of limescale to seasonal inspection of seals and cartridges. What shortens the lifespan of a Balletto faucet – sources of damage

Before we get into the specifics of maintenance, it is good to understand what actually harms the faucet. Based on practical experience from customer service, it is possible to identify five main enemies of every water faucet:

  • Limescale (calcium carbonate deposits) – the most common problem, especially in areas with hard water. Limescale settles on the aerator screens, on the surface of the faucet, and also inside the cartridge, where it gradually blocks the movement of ceramic plates.
  • Chlorine and chemicals in water – disinfectants from public water supplies gradually degrade rubber seals and O-rings. This effect is slow, but after a few years, it becomes noticeable in the form of increased dripping.
  • Mechanical wear – every turn of the lever, every temperature setting, every opening and closing triggers the movement of ceramic plates inside the cartridge. Ceramic is hard, but not indestructible, and sand particles from the pipes accelerate its wear.
  • Inappropriate cleaning agents – acids, strong degreasers, abrasive cleaning pastes and powders can destroy the surface finish of the faucet (chrome, matte black, gold, gunmetal) faster than ten years of regular use.
  • Water pressure and temperature fluctuations – excessively high pressure (over 5 bar) accelerates the wear of the cartridge and strains the seals. Water that is too hot, over 70 °C, can damage plastic components inside the faucet.

Daily surface cleaning – the basis for a long lifespan

The simplest and at the same time most important thing you can do for your Balletto faucet is regular wiping of the surface. It may seem too trivial? In practice, it turns out that neglecting this banality leads to permanent surface damage that cannot be repaired even by renovation.

After each use, water droplets remain on the surface of the faucet. If you let the water evaporate on its own, minerals (mainly calcium) settle on the surface and form white deposits – so-called limescale. At first, they are visible only under oblique light, but after several months without cleaning, they form a thick layer that really damages and corrodes the chrome or other surface finishes.

Correct procedure for daily cleaning

  • After each more thorough use (shower, bath), wipe the faucet with a soft microfiber cloth or cotton towel. Do not wipe too hard – gentle wiping is enough.
  • Never use paper towels or paper wipes – they contain abrasive fibers that scratch the surface finish, even if it is not visible to the naked eye.
  • No cleaning agents are needed for regular wiping – a dry or slightly damp cloth is sufficient.
  • If soap residue or shampoo appears on the surface of the faucet, rinse it with clean water and dry it. Soap residues can dull chrome surfaces if left for a long time.
  • Faucets with a matte surface finish (matte chrome, matte black, gunmetal) are slightly more sensitive to deposits than shiny chrome – regular wiping is even more important for them.

Practical tip from customer service: in bathrooms where the faucet surface was consistently wiped after each shower, we found faucets practically without visible surface damage during service inspections after five years. In bathrooms where this was done only occasionally, the surface was visibly damaged after just two years.

Weekly and monthly cleaning – aerator, head of the shower

In addition to the surface of the faucet, functional parts that come into contact with water also require regular attention – especially the aerator (screen) on the outlet spout and, if present, the head of the shower faucet.

Cleaning the aerator

The aerator is a small filter at the end of the faucet's spout. It consists of several meshes and plastic inserts that break the water stream into fine droplets and introduce air into it. This makes the water flow softer, less splashing, and reduces water consumption. The aerator is also the first place where impurities from the pipes are trapped and where limescale settles.

If the water flow begins to weaken or if the water sprays unevenly in different directions from the aerator, it is almost always a sign of a clogged aerator. Cleaning is simple and can be done by anyone without any special tools:

  • Unscrew the aerator from the spout – most aerators have an external thread of M22 or M24 and can be unscrewed by hand or using flat pliers wrapped in a cloth (to avoid scratching the surface finish).
  • Disassemble the aerator into individual parts – usually it consists of a rubber gasket, one or two metal meshes, and a plastic insert.
  • Soak all parts in a solution of white vinegar and water (1:1 ratio) for 30 minutes. Stronger limescale requires pure white vinegar or a specialized limescale remover.
  • After soaking, gently clean the meshes with a soft brush (e.g., an old toothbrush) and rinse with clean water.
  • Reassemble the aerator and screw it back onto the faucet.

The frequency of aerator cleaning depends on the water hardness in your area. In areas with very hard water (above 25 °dH – German degrees of hardness), we recommend cleaning every 4–6 weeks. In areas with soft or moderately hard water (up to 15 °dH), cleaning every 3 months is sufficient. Cleaning the hose and showerhead of the shower faucet

Shower faucets also have a hose and a handheld shower. The hose is prone to limescale accumulation at the joints and on the surface. The handheld shower has dozens of small holes that clog similarly to the aerator on the spout.

Most Balletto handheld showers have silicone nozzles that are easy to clean – simply shake or press with your finger to release the deposits. For a more thorough cleaning, soak the entire head in vinegar or limescale remover for 30–60 minutes. Clean the outside of the hose with a damp cloth. To clean the inside of the hose, fill it with a vinegar solution, let it sit for 20 minutes with both ends down, and then rinse with clean water.

Removing limescale from the surface of the faucet – proper procedures and what to definitely avoid

Limescale on the surface of the faucet is an aesthetic issue, but over time it can also become a functional one – deposits under the gasket at the junction of the faucet and the sink or bathtub can damage the seal and cause leaks.

If you have neglected regular wiping and limescale stains have formed on the faucet, here is a proven method for their removal:

  1. Vinegar (white) – the most accessible and safest solution for limescale. Dampen a cloth with white table vinegar (8 %) and apply it to the areas with deposits. Cover with cling film and let it sit for 30–60 minutes. Then gently scrub with a soft brush or cloth and rinse.
  2. Specialized limescale removers – commercially available products (e.g., based on citric acid) are more effective for heavy limescale. Always check if the product is suitable for chrome finishes or other surface treatments.
  3. Citric acid – a solution of 1–2 teaspoons in 250 ml of warm water is slightly more aggressive than vinegar, but still safe for chrome when used for short periods (up to 20 minutes).

What to definitely NOT USE for cleaning Balletto faucets:

  • Hydrochloric acid (muriatic acid) and products based on it – immediately damage the chrome layer and other surface finishes.
  • Abrasive cleaning powders and pastes (e.g., Cif powder, pumice powder) – create microscopic scratches that damage the surface layer and accelerate corrosion.
  • Aggressive degreasers and solvents (acetone, gasoline, WD-40 in large quantities) – can damage plastic and rubber components.
  • Wire brushes and hard sponges – immediately and irreversibly scratch the chrome surface.
  • Chlorine-based bleaches (e.g., Savo) – damage chrome surfaces and plastic parts.

Special attention should be given to faucets with surface finishes such as matte black, bronze, gunmetal, or gold. These surfaces are much more sensitive than classic shiny chrome. For them, white vinegar is too aggressive when used for longer periods. Use only neutral soap solutions and a cloth, never acidic products. Annual Preventive Maintenance – What to Check and Do Every 12 Months

Along with daily and weekly cleaning, we recommend performing a more comprehensive inspection of the entire faucet once a year. This inspection is not technically demanding, does not require special tools, and can be handled by an average handyman. In the case of Balletto faucets, the inspection takes 30–60 minutes per faucet.

Procedure for the Annual Inspection of Balletto Faucets

1. Visual inspection of the surface – examine the entire surface of the faucet under good lighting. Look for scratches, peeling surface finish, corrosion in the corners and at the junction with the sanitary ceramic. Surface damage is better addressed early – chrome repairs (spraying) as a DIY solution do not work, but replacing the faucet with a new one is much easier when the damage is detected early, before corrosion reaches the threads.

2. Water pressure check – using an inexpensive manometer (costing up to 15 EUR), which is screwed in place of the aerator, measure the water pressure at the closed faucet. The ideal pressure for long faucet lifespan is 2.5–4.0 bar. Pressure above 5 bar accelerates cartridge wear and strains the seals – in such a case, it is advisable to install a pressure regulator on the water supply to the apartment. 3. Inspection of seals and connections – wipe a dry cloth around the base of the faucet (where it sits on the sink or wall) and around the water connection under the sink. Any moisture indicates a leaking seal. Rubber seals at the base of the faucet are replaced during faucet disassembly – standard rubber lasts 8–12 years, while silicone seals can last up to 20 years.

4. Inspection of the lever and moving parts – move the faucet lever and observe whether it moves smoothly and easily throughout its entire range. The lever should not stick or jump. If the movement is stiff, the most common cause is limescale around the lever axis – clean this area with a vinegar solution. If the movement remains stiff after cleaning, it may indicate a worn-out cartridge that is due for replacement.

5. Inspection and cleaning of the aerator – always disassemble and clean the aerator during the annual inspection, even if the water flow appears fine. Deposits start to reduce the flow long before you notice it.

6. Inspection of water temperature – for Balletto thermostatic faucets, check whether the set temperature corresponds to the actual temperature of the outgoing water. A deviation of more than 3–5 °C from the set value indicates wear of the thermostat or a clogged hot water filter. Filters in the thermostatic cartridge are part of the annual inspection.

Special Situations – Vacation, Renovation, Hard Water

Going on a longer vacation

If you are leaving the household for more than 2–3 weeks, close the main water shut-off valve or at least the corner valves under the faucets. Standing water in the faucet and pipes can cause bacterial growth (including Legionella) and minerals settle more intensively over time. After returning, let the water run for several minutes before first use.

Along with the health aspect, there is also a mechanical issue: seals and O-rings that remain dry and motionless for a long time may "stick" and crack or deform when opened for the first time. Ideally, before leaving, open and close the faucet several times so that the seals remain wet and flexible.

Renovation and construction work

During the renovation of a bathroom or kitchen, when grinding, cutting, masonry, or sanding is done nearby, the faucet is at double risk: surface damage from dust and tools, and clogged aerator and cartridge from coarse sand and pipe debris.

Before starting the renovation, wrap the faucet in bubble wrap and secure it with tape. After completing the rough work and before the finishing phase, briefly run full water flow (without an aerator!) into a bucket for several minutes – this will flush the pipes and remove deposits before they damage the faucet cartridge.

Area with hard water – preventive measures

In areas with water hardness above 20 °dH (for example, a large part of Bratislava, the Nitra region, and parts of southern Slovakia), limescale forms much faster. In these areas, we recommend not only shortening the aerator cleaning interval but also the following measures:

  • Installation of a magnetic water softener on the water supply to the bathroom or the entire apartment – an inexpensive solution for 30–80 EUR, reduces water hardness by 30–60 % without chemicals.
  • Installation of a polyphosphate doser (stopvalve) – a chemical method, more effective, but requires chemical refilling once every 2–3 months.
  • Ion exchange water softener (salt-based) – the most effective solution, almost completely eliminates limescale, but is more expensive to install (400–1 500 EUR) and requires regular regeneration with salt.
  • Use of a water filter on the faucet supply – many Balletto faucets have a built-in filter on the supply line that captures coarse mechanical impurities. Clean it during every annual inspection.

Lubrication and maintenance of moving parts

Moving parts of the faucet – lever shaft, aerator threads, seals – can benefit from occasional lubrication with a suitable lubricant. It is important to be careful here: not every lubricant is suitable for water faucets, some are even harmful.

Suitable lubricants for Balletto faucets:

  • Petrolatum (technical or white) – ideal for lubricating threads, rubber O-rings and seals. It is neutral to rubber, does not wash away with water, is cheap and available. Apply a thin layer each time you replace a seal or aerator.
  • Silicone lubricant (spray or paste) – excellent for rubber seals, extends their lifespan, does not affect plastics or metals. Use silicone lubricant based on pure silicone, not solvent-based.
  • Special lubricants for water taps – commercially available products specifically designed for taps, meeting standards for potable water (NSF/ANSI 61).

What NOT to lubricate: never use WD-40 as a lubricant for rubber seals – WD-40 is primarily a rust remover and solvent, not a lubricant, and in the long term it damages rubber and causes it to become brittle. Also do not use olive, vegetable or other edible oils – they rancidify and cause odors and biological problems.

When is it time to replace the cartridge or the entire faucet

Even the best maintenance cannot extend the lifespan of a faucet indefinitely. The cartridge is the heart of every lever faucet and has a limited lifespan. Ceramic cartridges in high-quality Balletto faucets are tested for 200,000 to 500,000 openings/closings, which at normal home use corresponds to 15–25 years. In reality, the results vary greatly depending on water quality and frequency of cleaning.

Signs that the cartridge needs to be replaced:

  • The faucet drips from the outlet spout even after the lever is closed
  • The lever moves more stiffly than usual, despite cleaning
  • It is not possible to smoothly adjust the temperature – the faucet jumps from hot to cold
  • Visible cracks or breakage of the ceramic plate (discovered during disassembly)

  • The surface finish is so damaged that the faucet spoils the bathroom's aesthetics
  • The faucet body is corroded or cracked

Practical tips for different types of Balletto faucets

Lever faucet (basin, sink)

The single-lever faucet is the most common type. When maintaining it, pay special attention to the area around the lever axis – this is where limescale, soap residue and dust accumulate. Clean this area once a month with a cloth dampened in vinegar solution. The lever should move smoothly – if it starts to drag, it is the first warning sign.

Thermostatic faucet

Balletto thermostatic faucets have, in addition to the standard cartridge, also a thermostatic element – the thermostat. This is sensitive to water quality. Especially with hard water, it is important to clean the filters on the hot and cold water inlets every 6 months. Most Balletto thermostats have these filters easily accessible – check the installation manual of the faucet to see where they are indicated. The thermostatic element has a lifespan of 10–15 years and can be replaced separately from the entire faucet body.

Wall-mounted faucet

Wall-mounted Balletto faucets are a bit more tricky in this respect – the faucet body is built into the wall and only the decorative front part (rosette, lever, cover) is accessible. Physical inspection of the internal seals is not possible without partial disassembly. Therefore, it is even more important to perform preventive seal replacement according to the recommended interval (every 8–10 years), even if they do not leak. Leaks behind the tiles are discovered late and the damage can be extensive.

With a shower faucet, the system also includes a shower hose, handheld shower and possibly a shower rod. Check the hose regularly – look for flexibility, bubbles and cracks in the coating. Steel hoses from Balletto are more durable than plastic ones, but the connections (nut and seal) are just as prone to limescale. The shower rod (hanger) usually only requires a visual inspection and wiping – its moving part (sliding ring) may become stiff over time – a few drops of silicone lubricant solve this problem for years.

Most frequently asked questions about Balletto faucet maintenance (FAQ)

Can I use Cif cream to clean a chrome faucet?

Cif cream (liquid) is less abrasive than Cif powder, but we still do not recommend it for chrome faucets with regular use. It contains fine abrasive particles that over time create microscopic scratches in the chrome surface. These scratches are not visible immediately, but after one or two years the chrome starts to dull and deposits will stick to the surface more easily. For regular cleaning, a damp microfiber cloth and a few drops of vinegar for limescale are sufficient.

Water flow from the Balletto faucet has weakened – what should I check first?

The first thing to check is always the aerator – the mesh on the spout. In the vast majority of cases, the cause of the weakened flow is a clogged aerator due to limescale or mechanical impurities from the pipes. Disassembling the aerator, soaking it in vinegar, and cleaning it with a brush usually immediately solves the problem. If the flow does not return, check the angle valve under the faucet to ensure it is fully open. In the worst case, it could be a clog inside the cartridge – this requires replacing the cartridge.

How many years will the Balletto faucet last with proper maintenance?

With thorough regular maintenance – daily wiping, regular cleaning of the aerator, and an annual inspection – a high-quality Balletto faucet can last 15–25 years without problems. Compare this to cheap faucets without regular maintenance, where the average lifespan is 3–7 years. The cartridge will need to be replaced once or twice during the faucet's lifetime (every 10–15 years), and the seals every 8–12 years. Can I use vinegar on the matte black surface of the Balletto faucet?

No, acetic acid can damage the matte black surface (also known as Black Matt or Matte Black PVD) – it can lighten it and disrupt the surface finish structure. For matte black, gold, and bronze surfaces, use only neutral products – soapy water (a few drops of mild liquid soap in warm water) and a soft cloth. Limescale on these surfaces is removed mechanically with a damp cloth – never chemically.

My faucet is dripping from under the handle, not from the spout – what is the issue?

Dripping from under the handle (not from the spout) indicates a different type of problem than dripping from the spout. The most common cause is a damaged O-ring on the handle shaft or on the top part of the cartridge. This seal prevents water from leaking up along the handle shaft. Replacing the O-ring is relatively simple and inexpensive (O-rings cost cents) – it is a common repair during the first annual inspection, when the faucet is partially disassembled.
