A single-lever faucet allows operation with one hand – you lift the lever and water flows, you turn sideways and set the temperature. Bathroom sink

This is the classic case. Most customers automatically reach for a single-handle faucet here, and in most cases, it's the right choice. In the morning, after lunch, in the evening – quick hand washing, teeth cleaning, morning hygiene. A single-handle faucet is fast and convenient, and if you have a limiting cartridge (e.g. with an eco-stop position at 50% flow), you also save water.

A two-handle faucet on a sink makes sense when: a) you want a retro or vintage look (a two-handle faucet with round handles has undeniable aesthetic value in art-deco or industrial loft-style bathrooms), b) you have a large hot water tank with low heating costs and want precise control of each side, c) you have children or seniors who are used to the old system and don't want to change their habits.

Bathtub and shower enclosure

With a bathtub, the situation becomes more complicated. A single-handle bathtub faucet is convenient for filling the tub and using the handheld shower – one handle controls both temperature and flow, and the switch between bathtub and shower is usually handled by a button or lever on the outlet. A big advantage is that when you step away from the tub and return, the temperature remains set.

Some plumbers and customers prefer a thermostatic faucet (thermostat) over a classic single-handle faucet for the bathtub – but that's already a different category. From practice, I know that some faults are typical for a specific type of tap:

  • Dripping from the outlet in the closed position – in a single-lever tap this almost always means a worn-out cartridge. In a double-lever tap this can be a worn-out washer on one side, or a cracked rubber seal.
  • Stiff, stuck lever – in a single-lever tap this problem is caused by limescale around the cartridge or its seized condition. In a double-lever tap stiffness of the handle indicates a rusted spindle mechanism or a cracked washer.

Can I replace a double-lever tap with a single-lever one without drilling?

It depends on the situation. If you have a sink with two holes in a 150 mm pitch, you can use a single-lever tap with an angled set and covers – you cover the second hole with a decorative plug and use only one hole. If the sink is monolithic (e.g., solid stone or acrylic) with fixed holes, it depends on whether the manufacturer offers plugs. In some cases, it is simpler to keep the double-lever tap or choose a three-hole model of a single-lever tap, which uses both holes elegantly.

How long does a cartridge in a single-lever mixer last?

With a quality ceramic cartridge from a reputable manufacturer (Kerox, Sedal) and normal water quality (hardness up to 20 °dH), it realistically lasts 12–20 years. In soft water, it may even last longer. Problems arise with very hard water without a water softener – limescale particles can damage ceramic surfaces, reducing the lifespan to 5–8 years.
