Stainless steel is an alloy of steel with a minimum chromium content of 10.5% (usually 16–18%) and often also nickel (8–10%). It is precisely the chromium content that forms a passive oxide layer on the surface – a kind of microscopic self-repairing shield that prevents oxygen and moisture from penetrating deeper into the material. In the case of standard bathroom accessories, we mainly encounter two types:

  • AISI 304 (1.4301) – standard kitchen and bathroom stainless steel, with 18% chromium and 8–10% nickel. It resists moisture, soap deposits, and common cleaning agents very well.
  • AISI 316 (1.4401) – marine stainless steel with an additional 2–3% molybdenum. It has significantly better resistance to chlorinated environments (e.g., pool bathrooms or bathrooms with aggressive cleaning agents). For home use, this is largely a premium choice that is not always necessary.

Important practical note: The designation "stainless steel" by no means guarantees a specific quality. Cheaper products from Asia may be made from 200-series stainless steel (with manganese instead of nickel), which has significantly lower resistance to corrosion. It is always worth asking for a material certificate or at least the AISI number.

Chrome plating – an electrochemical process with varying layer thickness

Chrome-plated accessories are not solid chrome – it is a base material (most often brass, zinc alloy ZAMAK, or steel) onto which a thin layer of chrome is electrochemically applied. A typical production process for a chrome-plated bathroom accessory looks like this: base material → degreasing → copper underlayer (5–10 µm) → nickel layer (10–20 µm) → final chrome layer (0.2–0.5 µm).

It is precisely this final chrome layer that gives the accessory its typical high-gloss, mirror-like effect. However, the layer thickness is critical – cheaper products with a layer below 0.1 µm are much more prone to peeling and corrosion spots than quality products with multi-layer chrome plating. In addition, EU regulations (ELV, REACH) limit the use of hexavalent chromium (Cr VI), so serious manufacturers now use trivalent chromium (Cr III), which is safer, but slightly less shiny.

Matte finishes – not one, but a whole family of technologies

Under the term "matte" in bathroom accessories, several fundamentally different technologies are hidden:

  • Matte chrome (brushed chrome) – classic chrome plating with a final brushing (directional brushing is visible), the surface is less shiny, the tone is silver.
  • Matte stainless steel (brushed stainless steel) – brushed surface of solid stainless steel, without a galvanic layer, typically with visible directional strokes.
  • Matte black (PVD black matt) – application of a thin layer of titanium nitride (TiN) or another compound by physical vapor deposition (PVD). The result is a hard, chemically resistant black layer.
  • Matte gold / rose gold – also PVD processes, the result is a gold or rose-gold matte surface, the same technology as matte black.
  • Powder coating (powder coating) – in some more affordable products, powder paint is used, applied electrostatically and cured. It is cheaper, but less resistant to mechanical damage.

Resistance to moisture and corrosion – who wins?

The bathroom is an aggressive environment. The combination of heat, moisture, soap deposits, shampoos, cleaning agents, and possibly salt baths requires materials that can withstand several decades without permanent damage.

Stainless steel – natural resistance without galvanic dependency

Stainless steel AISI 304 practically resists the normal bathroom environment indefinitely, as long as it is not exposed to concentrated acids or chlorinated cleaning agents (e.g., some degreasers based on hydrochloric acid). Corrosion resistance is determined by the material composition itself, not by a surface layer that could wear out. If stainless steel is scratched, the surface self-passivates. The broken layer "heals" with oxygen from the air – under ideal conditions within a few hours.

In practice, I have encountered cases where stainless steel still corroded. It always involved a combination of two problems: a poor type of stainless steel (200-series or unclassified alloy) and aggressive cleaning agents with acids or chlorine. Quality AISI 304 does not have these problems. Long-term tests have shown that stainless steel accessories in a normal home bathroom can last 20–30 years without corrosion with minimal care.

Chrome-plated accessories – vulnerability of the layer

Chrome plating has one fundamental Achilles' heel: when the final chrome layer is damaged (by a scratch, blunt impact, or long-term exposure to acids), the corrosion process progresses under the layer and manifests as bubbles and peeling. It is not a surface problem – it is a structural failure of the galvanic protection. In practice, we see this primarily when:

  • in corner areas where installation damaged the layer,
  • in places where abrasive cleaning agents or wire brushes are used,
  • in areas with hard water, where limescale sticks and the customer scrapes it off with a hard tool,
  • in cheaper products, where the nickel underlayer is too thin.

High-quality chrome-plated products with multi-layer electroplating and proper layer thickness can last 10–15 years without visible problems. Cheaper products may start to corrode after 3–5 years, sometimes even sooner in bathrooms with hard water and aggressive cleaning.

Matt PVD surfaces – the most durable surface technology

PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) layers are the best available today in terms of hardness and chemical resistance for bathroom accessories. Titanium nitrides and other PVD coatings achieve hardness of 2 000–3 000 HV (Vickers), which is several times higher than electroplated chrome layers (approx. 800–1 000 HV). Chemically, PVD layers are inert to most common bathroom chemicals.

The issue with PVD surfaces is different: once it is damaged (deep scratch or impact), repair is practically impossible. PVD layers are applied in a vacuum chamber at temperatures of 200–500 °C – this cannot be replicated at home. So while stainless steel "self-heals" and chrome plating can be re-plated in extreme cases, a damaged PVD surface is visibly ruined for good.

Daily maintenance – where the biggest differences lie

Material durability is only half the story. The other half is how much work it takes to keep the accessories in good condition. And here the differences between surfaces are most pronounced.

High-gloss chrome – beauty that requires attention

Polished chrome surfaces are an extreme in terms of visibility of dirt. Fingerprints remain on every touch. Water droplets after drying leave white rings from limescale. Soap deposits shine on glossy chrome and are immediately visible. For a perfectionist, a chrome-plated bathroom is a nightmare – it looks great only the first day after cleaning.

Proper routine for chrome-plated surfaces:

  • Wipe dry chrome surfaces with a dry cloth or microfiber after each use – this dramatically reduces limescale buildup.
  • Weekly cleaning with a mild agent (e.g. diluted vinegar 1:10 or special chrome cleaner) and drying to a shine.
  • NEVER use abrasive agents, wire brushes or cleaning agents containing hydrochloric acid – these will irreversibly damage the chrome layer.
  • For limescale, a warm vinegar or lemon juice solution works well for a few minutes of soaking, then rinsing and drying.

Stainless steel – robust, but not maintenance-free

Brushed stainless steel is a much more forgiving surface than polished chrome. The matte texture optically hides water stains and fingerprints much better. However, stainless steel has its specific weakness: brushed directional grooves catch dirt and limescale if cleaned in a direction perpendicular to the grooves. Therefore, it is crucial to always clean stainless steel surfaces in the direction of the brushing, not circularly and not across.

I once had a customer who after a year complained that the stainless steel accessories looked worse than the chrome ones in the neighboring bathroom. Upon visiting, it turned out that the cleaner was using a hard sponge with circular motions – the result was visible marring of the entire surface (a mess of fine scratches over the original grooves). The surface was optically ruined, although the material was still in good condition.

Proper routine for stainless steel surfaces:

  • Clean with a soft cloth or microfiber always in the direction of the brushing.
  • For regular cleaning, a damp cloth with a drop of soap is sufficient.

Matte black or matte gold PVD layers are surprisingly pleasant in terms of daily maintenance. The matte texture effectively hides fingerprints and water stains. The colored layer also optically masks minor dirt. In several bathrooms where we installed matte black accessories, customers reported that the cleaning frequency was halved compared to previous chrome-plated accessories.

But beware – matte PVD has one sensitive side: some aggressive cleaning agents (acids, strong alkalis, products with oxidizing components) can damage the PVD layer or cause local discoloration. Manufacturers therefore recommend using only neutral cleaning agents (pH 6–8) and soft cloths.

Proper routine for matte PVD surfaces:

  • A damp soft cloth, neutral soap, rinse with clean water – that's all.
  • No acids (not even concentrated vinegar over time), no chrome cleaner, no abrasives.
  • Remove limescale promptly, before it "bakes in" – then a warm damp cloth is enough.

Resistance to mechanical damage – scratch test from practice

A lot happens in the bathroom: shampoo bottles fall, metal objects catch on accessories, razors scratch the shelves. Surface resistance to scratches is therefore of great practical importance.

Surface hardness according to measurements (approximately):

  • Brushed stainless steel AISI 304: surface hardness 150–200 HV. The brushed surface covers fine scratches, but deep ones are permanently visible. Advantage: the surface can be gently brushed again and the scratch can be optically eliminated.
  • Chromed surface (Cr III): the chrome layer itself reaches 800–1 000 HV, which is paradoxically harder than stainless steel, but the layer is only 0.2–0.5 µm thick. Fine scratches can be handled by the chrome layer, but a deep scratch will penetrate through the entire set of galvanic layers and start a corrosion process.
  • PVD layer (TiN): 2 000–3 000 HV, which is extreme hardness. In practice, the PVD surface is resistant to normal mechanical contact, but in the case of strong impact or sharp objects, the layer can flake off (without self-repair).

Practical tip: if you have children in the bathroom or an active household with high load, brushed stainless steel is the most sustainable long-term choice – any scratches can be visually corrected, the surface has no galvanic dependency, and corrosion does not occur in case of damage. MAT PVD is excellent for aesthetics and low maintenance, but it won't forgive mechanical damage.

Impact of water quality and chemicals

Slovakia has very diverse water hardness – while in some regions (for example, parts of Bratislava supplied by surface sources) the water is relatively soft (under 2 mmol/l), in other areas hardness can be 4–6 mmol/l and significantly more, which corresponds to very hard water with intense limescale deposition.

Hard water causes the most damage to chromed surfaces: limescale binds to microdefects in the chrome layer, and when the customer mechanically removes it (which inevitably happens), there is a risk of damaging the galvanic layer. MAT PVD surfaces are somewhat more tolerant when removing limescale – the layer is harder and harder to damage. Stainless steel handles hard water well, provided high concentration acids are not used.

Comparison of price and lifetime value – what is actually more economical?

Arguments about price are interesting in this category. Chromed accessories are typically in the lower and medium price range, stainless steel is somewhat more expensive, and MAT PVD products (especially matte black and matte gold) are highly valued. But let's look at the real lifetime value:

  • Cheap chromed accessory for 15 € with likely replacement after 5 years = 3 €/year + costs for replacement and installation.
  • Quality chromed accessory for 40 € with a lifespan of 15 years = 2.67 €/year.
  • Stainless steel accessory for 55 € with a lifespan of 25+ years = 2.20 €/year or less.
  • Quality MAT PVD accessory for 80 € with a lifespan of 15–20 years (assuming careful handling) = 4–5 €/year, but zero costs for cleaning products (a damp cloth is enough).

From this perspective, stainless steel is the most economical choice in the long run. MAT PVD is economically interesting mainly when you consider the cost factor of cleaning and comfort – lower frequency, simpler maintenance.

Theory is useful, but the best decisions are made on concrete examples. Here are a few typical situations from practice:

Scenario 1: Family with three children, intensive load

In this case, the clear choice is stainless steel, ideally with a brushed surface. Children drop things, scratch, and wet hands leave marks everywhere. Brushed stainless steel can handle it, any surface scratches are optically hidden by existing grooves and the material never peels or corrodes due to mechanical damage. A shiny chrome product would be a constant source of frustration in this bathroom – stains after every touch, every scratch visible, every drop of water leaves a mark.

Scenario 2: Design bathroom in a new building, rarely used

For a representative bathroom for guests or for customers who care about aesthetics and maintain the bathroom carefully, PVD matte surfaces (matte black, matte gold) are an excellent choice. The visual effect is dramatic, water stains are not a problem, and maintenance is low. It is important to educate the whole household about the principle: only neutral cleaning agents.

Scenario 3: Rented apartment – selection with consideration for tenants

A combination applies here: cost-effectiveness + maximum durability. A quality chrome-plated product in the mid-price category with a multi-layer galvanic coating is a good compromise. Stainless steel would be ideal, but in a rental situation, aggressive cleaning by tenants is a risk – stainless steel can survive it, but if a tenant cleans across the grain using a hard brush, the surface will be optically damaged. From a professional point of view, the principle applies: a maximum of two different surface finishes in one space, with one being dominant and the other complementary. For example: dominant matte chrome (accessories) + chrome faucet (transitional element). Or: dominant matte black + gold detail on the faucet. What doesn't work: three different surfaces (shiny chrome, matte black, and stainless steel) in one small bathroom looks chaotic and cheap.

Is matte chrome the same as stainless steel?

No, these are two completely different things despite a similar visual result. Matte (grained) chrome is a galvanically chrome-plated surface on a brass or zinc base with a surface-mattened chrome layer. Matte (grained) stainless steel is solid stainless steel AISI 304 or 316 mechanically sanded to a matte surface. Stainless steel is more durable in the long run, but also more expensive. With identical texture, they can be distinguished by a magnetic test or weight.

Can a chrome-plated accessory be saved after corrosion?

It depends on the extent of the damage. Surface corrosion (white or brown stains) can often be removed in many cases with special chrome cleaners or with fine 0000 steel wool and oil. But if the corrosion has penetrated under the chrome layer and causes peeling or bubbles, the accessory is at the end of its life. Re-galvanic chrome plating is economically unreasonable for standard accessories – the cost of the process exceeds the price of a new product.

Why are my matte black accessories getting white stains?

White deposits on PVD matte black accessories are almost always limescale or soap residue. The PVD layer does not cause them – on the contrary, the layer itself is chemically inert. The problem is hard water and delayed reaction – the longer you let the deposits sit, the harder they are to remove. Solution: weekly cleaning with a damp cloth and a drop of neutral soap, without acids. For harder deposits, you can use a lemon juice solution (maximum 1:20 with water) with short contact time and thorough rinsing.

Can I mix stainless steel and gold PVD accessories in the bathroom?

Yes, this combination is currently one of the popular design solutions. Brushed stainless steel (silver, neutral tone) works great as a base, to which gold PVD accents (for example, a faucet, hooks, or a toilet paper holder) add warmth and a luxurious impression. A quality PVD matte black accessory from a reputable manufacturer (e.g., on a brass base with a real PVD layer) should last 15–20 years without visible color damage with proper care. Cheaper versions with a powder-coated black surface (not PVD) may start to show edge and corner wear after 3–5 years of intensive daily use. Distinguishing PVD from paint helps with price (PVD is significantly more expensive) and surface hardness – paint can be scratched with a fingernail, PVD cannot.
