Product detailed description

Vaillant set for external circulation pump aguaFLOW exclusive VPM.../2 W

The set for external circulation pump (manufacturer order number 0010015145) is connection and control accessory for Vaillant aguaFLOW exclusive VPM.../2 W modules, which allows a separate (external) domestic hot water circulation pump located outside the module body to be connected and fully controlled from the module. Unlike the set with an integrated pump (order number 0010015144), which contains a complete pump built directly into the module's hydraulic block, this set serves for the electrical and control connection of the module with an external circulation pump installed elsewhere in the hot water distribution system - which is why it is also significantly cheaper, as it does not include the pump itself, only the interface for its connection and control.

The external pump solution is used mainly in larger or more complex installations, where it is not suitable (or possible) to have the circulation pump built directly into the module - for example, when the circulation pipe terminates at a different location in the boiler room, when a more powerful or differently sized pump is needed for longer piping runs, or when the building has multiple circulation branches that connect in a common distribution point outside the module.

Function and connection principle

The set includes the necessary connecting and control components (relay/control output, connectors and installation material) that allow the external circulation pump to be switched and controlled directly from the electronics of the aguaFLOW exclusive module - i.e. according to the same time program and the same logic as if it were an integrated pump. Thanks to this, no additional separate external circulation control is needed - setting the start and stop times of circulation is done uniformly via the module's control panel, or via a connected Vaillant system controller (e.g. sensoCOMFORT or multiMATIC), just like with a module with an integrated pump.

The external circulation pump itself (e.g. a suitable high-efficiency class circulating pump) is in this case procured and installed separately according to the specific hydraulic requirements of the given building - this set solely handles the connection of such a pump with the control system of the aguaFLOW exclusive module.

Why choose the external solution instead of the integrated pump

  • Flexibility of placement - the pump can be installed exactly where the circulation piping actually converges, which can shorten the pipe route and reduce heat losses.
  • Possibility to use a more powerful pump - for very long or branched piping systems, an external pump with parameters exactly matching the given hydraulic circuit can be chosen.
  • Suitable for multiple circulation branches - in buildings with several separate circulation branches (e.g. multiple wings of a building), it may be more practical to have the pump in a common distribution point rather than directly at the module.
  • Unified control - despite the external placement of the pump, the entire control of circulation remains centralized in the module's electronics without the need for a separate timer switch.

Installation

The installation of this set, including the electrical connection of the external pump with the control unit of the aguaFLOW exclusive module, must be carried out by a qualified electrician or service technician trained on Vaillant products. The installation also includes the correct hydraulic integration of the external pump into the circulation circuit (including a possible check valve, if required by the hydraulic scheme) and setting the module's control output to match the technical parameters of the chosen pump (e.g. switching voltage and maximum switching current). After connection, the same type of circulation time program is set in the module as is available with the integrated solution.

Compatibility

The set is intended for the entire range of aguaFLOW exclusive VPM.../2 W modules regardless of the power variant (20/25, 30/35 or 40/45), as it uses the same control interface of the module's electronics. It is not intended for solar modules of the auroFLOW series, which have their own concept of circulation within the solar circuit, different from the aguaFLOW modules.

Maintenance

The set itself (control interface) is maintenance-free, but since its function is directly linked to the external pump, it is recommended to check the following as part of the module's regular annual service inspection:

  • functionality of switching the external pump according to the set time program,
  • condition of the electrical connections and connectors between the module and the external pump,
  • operation and technical condition of the external pump itself (according to its own documentation),
  • tightness of hydraulic connections at the point of connection to the circulation circuit.

When this choice makes the most sense

This set is especially suitable for designers and technicians who design more complex hydraulic connections with multiple circulation branches or need to use a pump with different parameters than those offered by the integrated solution. It is also a practical choice when modernizing an older installation, where a functional circulation pump already exists and only needs to be connected to the new aguaFLOW exclusive module instead of being replaced with an integrated solution.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the circulation pump itself included in this set?

No, this set contains only the connection and control interface that allows an external circulation pump to be connected to and controlled from the electronics of the aguaFLOW exclusive module. The pump itself is selected and procured separately according to the specific parameters of the piping system.

Why is this set significantly cheaper than the set with an integrated pump?

The price difference is due to the fact that this set does not include the circulation pump itself (unlike the set with an integrated pump), but only the electrical and control connection to an already existing or separately supplied external pump.

What pump should I use as the external one?

The choice of a specific external pump depends on the length and sizing of the circulation piping in the given building. We recommend leaving the assessment and selection of a suitable pump to a qualified designer or service technician, who will take into account the hydraulic parameters of the entire system.

Can this set also be used for additional modernization of an older circulation system?

Yes, this is a common use case - if a functional circulation pump already exists in the building from the original installation, this set allows it to be connected to the new aguaFLOW exclusive module without having to replace the pump with a new integrated solution.

Is the circulation time program setting the same as with the internal pump?

Yes, once the set is connected, the external pump is controlled by the same module electronics as with the integrated solution, so setting the circulation time program is done in an identical way via the module's controls or a Vaillant system controller.

Typical use cases for an external circulation pump

In practice, this set is most often used in the following situations:

  • Modernization of an older building - a house or apartment building already has a functional, operationally proven circulation pump from the original installation, and the investor does not want to replace a working component, only connect it to the new aguaFLOW exclusive module.
  • Larger buildings with multiple wings - where it is more advantageous to have one centrally located pump serving multiple circulation branches than to handle circulation at the level of each individual module separately.
  • Space limitations at the module - if the technical room does not allow installation of the module with sufficient access to the integrated pump, or if the operator wishes to have the pump located in a more easily accessible place for potential service.
  • Specific hydraulic requirements - when the required head or flow rate for the given circulation circuit exceeds the parameters of the commonly available integrated solution.

Electrical and control interface - what the set solves in practice

From a technical point of view, this involves connecting the control output of the aguaFLOW exclusive module (which would otherwise switch the integrated pump) with the external power or signal input of a suitable circulation pump. The set includes the necessary connectors, or possibly an auxiliary relay, which ensure that the module's switching output (typically a low-voltage control signal) can safely and reliably control the external pump without overloading the module's electronics. When installing, the electrician or service technician must verify the compatibility of the module's switching parameters with the power supply and control requirements of the chosen external pump.

Connection to the overall hydraulic circulation solution

Regardless of whether an integrated or external circulation pump is chosen, the correct design of the piping system itself also has a fundamental impact on the functionality and efficiency of circulation - especially sufficient thermal insulation of the circulation pipe along its entire length and possible flow balancing between individual branches using control valves, in the case of a more branched system. These measures are just as important as the choice between an integrated and external pump and should be part of the overall design of the hot water distribution system.

Installation procedure of the set with an external pump

Installation of this set generally proceeds in the following steps:

  1. Selection and installation of the external pump according to a previously prepared design, including hydraulic connection into the circulation circuit (check valve, shut-off valves for potential servicing).
  2. Electrical connection of the control output of the aguaFLOW exclusive module with the power/control input of the external pump using the components from this set.
  3. Verification of parameter compatibility - switching voltage and maximum switching current between the module's output and the pump's input, or installation of an auxiliary relay if required by the pump.
  4. Setting the circulation time program in the module's electronics, in accordance with the building's requirements.
  5. Functional test - verifying that the external pump responds to signals from the module exactly according to the set program and that circulation actually works throughout the entire distribution system.

When to choose the integrated solution instead of the external one

Although this set offers greater flexibility, for a typical family house with a standard, direct circulation circuit without more complex branching, it is generally simpler and faster to choose the set with an integrated pump (0010015144), which does not require separate procurement and installation of an external pump or handling its hydraulic integration into the system outside the module. This external variant is most beneficial precisely for more complex or non-standard projects, where it offers the necessary degree of design freedom.

Practical example from a larger residential development

As an illustration of the use of this set, a typical example can be given of an apartment building with two separate entrances and a common technical room in the basement, where an aguaFLOW exclusive VPM 40/45/2 W module is installed. The hot water distribution runs to both entrances via separate risers with their own circulation piping, which connect into a common collecting pipe only in the technical room. In this case, it is more suitable to install one adequately powerful external pump at the point where both circulation branches connect, rather than handling circulation for each branch with a separate smaller integrated pump at the module - this set is designed precisely for such a connection.

Related project documentation

When ordering this set, we recommend having at least an approximate hydraulic design of the circulation circuit available (length and diameter of the circulation piping, number of branches, expected simultaneous demand), based on which a designer or experienced installer can select a suitable external pump with corresponding hydraulic parameters so that, in combination with this set, it works reliably and efficiently across the entire range of operating conditions of the system.

Summary

The set for external circulation pump aguaFLOW exclusive VPM.../2 W is an affordable solution for designers and technicians who need a more flexible domestic hot water circulation solution than the integrated pump directly in the module offers. It allows unified control of the external pump directly from the module's electronics without the need for separate additional control.
