What seems like a simple question – what size of inspection door do I need – in practice causes more confusion than you might expect. We visit customers who have ordered doors according to the size of the opening they have in the wall, and then we wonder why they can't be installed. Or the other way around – they measure the opening in a masonry wall and forget that the tiles narrow the passage by another 20 mm on each side. Result: the doors are too large, insufficient, or cannot be closed.
This article will explain the whole process – from the first measurement to the selection of a specific product – so that you do it right the first time. We will talk about all common situations: drywall partitions, masonry walls with tiles, ceilings, shafts, and installation behind a bathtub. I will also add specific numbers, tables, and diagrams that we use in our projects.
Basic terms – what is an opening, what is a frame, and what is a panel
Before we move on to measurements, it is necessary to unify terminology. Most misunderstandings arise precisely here.
Construction opening (or rough opening) is a cut in the wall or drywall structure – that is, what you cut with a saw, or what the mason installed. It is the largest dimension you are working with.
Clear opening of the inspection door is the dimension that the manufacturer specifies in the product name – for example, 300×300 mm or 600×600 mm. This is, however, the dimension of the frame, not the construction opening. Confusing these two numbers can ruin your entire project.
Panel (door leaf) is smaller than the frame – these are the actual doors that open. Their clear opening after opening is again slightly smaller than the frame dimension.
Reveal (trim, overlap) is the edge of the frame that extends over the edge of the opening and covers the gap. Most standard inspection doors have a reveal of 10–20 mm on each side.
How to measure the opening correctly – step by step
Measuring the opening is the first and most important thing. Do it calmly, with a good measuring tape, and ideally twice – once horizontally, once vertically. Practice shows that openings are not always perfectly square – masonry openings are often trapezoidal, drywall ones are usually more precise, but even there it is not guaranteed.
Measuring in a drywall wall
In drywall, you measure the clean cut – that is, from the edge of the sheet to the edge of the sheet. Since drywall is usually tiled or painted without plaster, the size of the opening remains relatively stable. Most drywall inspection doors – for example, Inspection doors with fixed hinges and a drywall insert, 300×300 mm – are installed so that the frame is inserted into the opening and the reveal covers the gap. The construction opening must be the same or 5–10 mm larger than the stated door size, not smaller.
Practical example: A customer in Bratislava ordered 300×300 mm doors for access to a water shutoff behind a shower. The drywall opening was cut to 290×295 mm. We had to return the doors and finish the opening. It would have been enough to cut 305×305 mm and the doors would have fit without problems.
Measuring in a masonry wall without tiling
Here you measure the rough masonry opening – that is, the cut in the brick or ytone. Make the measurement at the narrowest point (openings in masonry walls are often asymmetric after cutting). To this number, you should then add the plaster – a standard plaster layer is 12–18 mm, which reduces the practical size of the opening from each side. So if the masonry opening without plaster measures 320×320 mm, after plastering you can expect a clean opening of about 285–295 mm.
Measuring in a masonry wall with tiling
This is the most deceptive situation. Tiles on a masonry wall can add 8–15 mm on each side (ceramic 8–10 mm + adhesive bed 3–6 mm + possibly a gap at the frame). So if you have a masonry opening of 350×350 mm and want to tile the wall, the clear opening after tiling will be around 320–330 mm. The inspection doors must have a frame that corresponds to this smaller number – and the reveal must be large enough to cover the gap between the frame and the tiles.
Relationship between the structural opening and the door dimensions – table
This is the most common question we receive: "I have an opening of 300×300 mm, which door should I order?" The answer depends on the wall construction and the specific product, but below you will find an approximate table for the most common situations.

When to order doors smaller or larger than the opening
This is a cardinal question. A simple rule: the door frame must be smaller or equal to the structural opening (with at least 3–5 mm clearance on each side for alignment), but the rebate must be larger than the structural opening to cover the gap.
In practice, it works like this: if you have a gypsum board opening of 605×605 mm and you order Inspection doors on fixed hinges with a built-in gypsum board insert, 600×600 mm, the frame will easily fit into the opening and the rebate (type and size depend on the specific product) will cover the gap. It is not necessary for the opening to be exactly 600×600 – in practice, a small clearance is always made.
The opposite mistake – ordering doors larger than the opening – is irreparable without enlarging the opening. Do not try to "force" the doors into a small opening, you will deform the frame and they will never close properly.
Special case: tiled wall in the bathroom
The situation in the bathroom is more complicated. Tiling is usually laid on gypsum board or masonry, while the inspection doors are installed either before tiling (then the tiler tiles the wall and works around the doors), or after tiling (then you need to know the final size of the opening in the tile). Both variants make sense – it depends on the building process.
If you install the doors before tiling: measure the structural opening in the gypsum board or masonry, choose doors with a sufficient rebate so that the tiling can be laid up to the frame. If you install the doors after tiling: measure the finished opening in the tile – this is your final size for selecting the doors.

Common standard dimensions of inspection doors – which ones are suitable when
Manufacturers offer inspection doors in several standardized dimensions. These are designed to suit the most common installation situations. Here is an overview of what is most commonly installed and why:
Small inspection doors: 150×150 mm, 200×200 mm, 250×250 mm
These dimensions are used exclusively for access to small fittings – typically valve boxes under the sink, access to water consumption meters or small ball valves. A hand can pass through 200×200 mm, but only one – it is not enough for actual service work. If you plan that a whole hand and part of the arm will need to pass through the doors at some point (e.g., for tightening a trap), consider at least 250×250 or 300×300 mm.
Medium inspection doors: 300×300 mm
This is the most popular size in Slovak bathrooms. Inspection doors on fixed hinges with a built-in gypsum board insert, 300×300 mm are suitable behind a shower tray, in the wall behind the bathtub, or anywhere you need access to a shut-off valve, fuse or pipe connections. Through 300×300 mm you can comfortably reach to adjust corner valves and in an emergency even replace a trap without dismantling the whole wall.
Larger inspection doors: 400×400 mm, 500×500 mm, 600×600 mm
Here we get into the area of installation shafts, access to water heaters, storage heaters or distribution in underfloor heating. Sheet metal inspection doors with a snap lock B2 500×500 mm or variant 600×600 mm are typically installed in tiled walls of technical rooms, behind kitchen units or in the distribution shaft of an apartment block. Through 500×500 mm you can comfortably insert a torso of a person, which you will really appreciate when doing service work on a water heater.
Large inspection doors: 700×700 mm and 800×800 mm
Large formats are the domain of installation shafts in apartment buildings, industrial buildings, technical rooms or access to ventilation systems. Sheet metal inspection doors with a rectangular lock, system B1 800×800 mm are robust sheet metal constructions intended for frequent opening and for situations where the service technician needs comfortable access to distribution nodes. This size is common in office buildings and hospitals.
What influences the choice of size apart from the opening itself
The size of the opening itself is not the only factor that determines the choice. In practice, we encounter situations where the opening exists, but the circumstances require either a larger or smaller format of the door. Here is an overview of the factors you need to consider.
Accessibility of the fitting or device
The most important question is not what size of opening you have now, but what you need to do through it. If there is only a ball valve behind the door, which you open once a year, 200×200 mm is sufficient. If there is a whole battery, pressure gauges, expansion tank, and a service valve behind the door, you will need at least 500×500 mm, even if you have to slightly enlarge the opening. Saving on the size of the door and then having to break the wall for every malfunction ends up being several times more expensive.
Wall thickness and installation depth
The deeper the device is in the wall, the larger the opening must be to physically reach it. A 75 mm thick gypsum board partition is not a problem – your hand can fit through almost any size. But if we have a 300 mm thick masonry wall and the distribution unit is further behind the opening, you have to physically reach behind it. In this case, it is always better to choose one size larger than you think you need.
Aesthetics and visibility of the doors
In bathrooms with expensive tiles, customers want the doors to be as invisible as possible. In such cases, inspection doors with a built-in gypsum board panel, 600×600 mm are used – the customer tiles the surface with the same tiles as the wall, and the doors practically disappear. In this case, the final size of the visible area is determined by the tile, but the physical opening for the frame must be determined according to the gypsum board construction.
Frequency of use
Inspection doors that you visit every month (e.g., for reading meters in common areas) must be large enough and have a durable lock – for example, a square lock. Doors that you open once every five years in the event of a breakdown can be smaller and have a simple snap-on system. Mistakes in measuring that keep repeating
After years of customer experience, we can quite accurately predict where customers make mistakes. Here are the most common ones:
- Measuring the opening without considering the tile – the customer measures the opening in raw gypsum board and orders doors to this size. Then the tiler tiles the wall and the opening suddenly becomes 20 mm narrower on each side. Result: the doors cannot be inserted.
- Mixing up the frame size and the passage size – ordering doors based on what you need to pass through, not based on the size of the opening. If you need to pass a 150 mm trap, it does not mean that 150×150 mm doors are sufficient – the frame must be mounted, the rebate takes up space, and you can actually pass through less than the size of the doors.
- Measuring only in one place – openings are not always rectangular. Measure in several places and take the smallest measured size as the binding one.
- Ignoring the wall thickness when determining the frame depth – some inspection doors have a frame of a certain depth. If the wall is thinner than the frame depth, the doors will protrude.
- Ordering doors before the opening is ready – the ideal process is: first the opening, then the measurement, then the order. In practice, many customers do the opposite and then have to awkwardly adjust the opening to the purchased doors.
Unusual situations and how to deal with them
Opening is not square – it is rectangular
Many customers are not aware that inspection doors are also available in rectangular dimensions – for example 300×400 mm or 400×600 mm. If you have a limitation in one direction (e.g. you do not want to interfere with a load-bearing wall structure), a rectangular opening and the corresponding door are the right solution. Always specify width and height before ordering – sheet metal doors are mostly hung on the vertical edge, so it depends whether you want the door to open to the right or to the left.
Opening in the ceiling – inspection doors for suspended ceiling
Ceiling inspection doors (covers) are a special category. If you are installing an access cover in a suspended drywall ceiling, for example for access to ventilation or electrical cables, the same measurement rules apply as for wall doors, but in addition you must take into account the weight of the doors – heavier sheet metal doors in the ceiling require more robust mounting and quality hinges to prevent them from sagging over time.
Doors on a sloping wall or in a corner
These are unusual orders where standard solutions do not work. If the wall is sloped (e.g. under a staircase), the doors are installed into the vertical plane of the opening and the slope of the wall is solved by the depth of the frame or a special profile. In such cases we recommend consultation before ordering.
I need fire-resistant or waterproof inspection doors
Standard inspection doors are not intended for fire-resistant separation of spaces or for permanent contact with water. If you are solving access in a fire compartment or in the exterior, you need special products with certificates. For normal bathroom environments (humidity, condensation) standard sheet metal doors with powder coating or drywall doors are sufficient.
Practical examples from real orders
Nothing teaches better than concrete examples. Here are a few situations we encounter regularly:
Example 1 – apartment core, panel building: The customer has an original panel building core with masonry walls 150 mm thick. They need access to the cold water shut-off valve and the hot water meter. The opening in the masonry wall (without plaster) measures 340×340 mm. After tiling the bathroom, the walls will be covered with 10 mm ceramic tile on a 6 mm bed. The final opening in the tile will therefore be approx. 308×308 mm. The customer chose 300×300 mm doors with the idea that the frame would be inserted into the opening and the flange would cover the gap at the tiling. A correct solution, working without problems.
Example 2 – new building, drywall partition: The plumber requests access to the pipe distribution behind the bathroom. The drywall partition is 75 mm profile + 2× GKB 12.5 mm. The opening for the doors was cut to 610×610 mm (with the intention to buy 600×600 mm doors). The wall was not tiled – only plaster and paint. The 600×600 mm doors with drywall filling fit exactly, the flange covered the gap, the paint was applied smoothly. An example of ideal procedure.
Example 3 – installation shaft, apartment building: The apartment building manager needed access to the HUV (main water shut-off) and meter on each floor. The shafts have openings 820×820 mm (masonry, without plaster). The solution was sheet metal inspection doors 800×800 mm with square lock – a robust construction for frequent opening by technical staff, a key lock for security. Installation directly into the masonry opening without framing proceeded without complications.
Example 4 – typical mistake: The customer ordered 500×500 mm doors according to the plumber's drawings. On site it turned out that the opening had been cut to 480×478 mm (cutting inaccuracy). We had to exchange the doors for 450×450 mm and the customer had to have the opening slightly adjusted. Lesson: always measure the actual opening, not the plan.
Most frequently asked questions (FAQ)
How do I find out what doors I have if I know nothing about the original installation?
If you have doors installed and want to replace them, the easiest way is to unscrew the existing doors (or the whole frame) and measure either the existing frame or the opening behind it. Most standard doors can be replaced with the same size without the need to modify the opening. If you don't have doors and only know about the cut-out in the wall, follow the steps described in this article.
Can I adjust the frame of inspection doors – for example, cut it?
Sheet metal doors can technically be shortened with an angle grinder, but we do not recommend it – cutting removes the protective layer of powder coating and the edges will start to corrode. In addition, any modification of the frame can damage its rigidity and the doors will not close properly. It is much easier and cheaper to buy the correct size right away. Drywall frames are even more sensitive – any mechanical shortening will damage them.
What if my opening is not a standard size – for example 350×420 mm?
Non-standard sizes are common in practice, especially during panel building renovations, where original openings are not in metric standards. In such a case you have three options: (a) modify the opening to the nearest standard size (larger), (b) order custom doors from the manufacturer, which is more expensive, or (c) choose the nearest smaller standard size and mount the frame with a larger gap, with the flange covering the gap. Option (c) works only if the flange is large enough.
What influence does wall thickness have on the choice of doors?
Wall thickness determines how deep the door frame must be. Most standard inspection doors have a frame depth of 40–80 mm, which is suitable for drywall and standard masonry. If you have a thick masonry wall (200 mm or more), check whether the door frame corresponds to the wall thickness, or whether a protrusion or additional profile is needed. This is solved during installation in thick external walls of technical rooms.
Do I always have to make an opening exactly the same size as the doors?
No – and that is a crucial mistake. The construction opening must always be at least 5–10 mm larger on each side than the stated size of the doors. This space is used for leveling (the doors must be able to be placed in horizontal and vertical position) and for anchoring. The door flange then covers this gap. Never make an opening exactly the size of the doors – you will end up with a frame that cannot be inserted.
Is there a difference between the width and height dimensions when ordering doors?
Yes, with rectangular doors it matters which dimension is width and which is height, because it depends on the orientation of the hinges and the direction of opening. Most manufacturers state the dimensions in the format width×height. If you are not sure, check the product description or contact the seller before ordering. For square doors (300×300, 500×500 etc.) this problem does not arise.

Most important is to realize that the size stated by the manufacturer is not the size of the construction opening – it is the size of the frame that fits into the opening. Before every order, ask yourself five basic questions: What is the type of wall? What is the actual size of the construction opening (at the narrowest point)? Are there any coatings or plaster in the wall that reduce this opening? What clear passage do I need for service purposes?
