Despite this, most households only clean the tap superficially – wiping it with a damp cloth occasionally and considering the care done. In practice, however, we see that neglecting proper and regular maintenance is one of the main reasons why taps lose their shine, start dripping, the lever or valve becomes stiff, or the surface finish gets irreversibly damaged much earlier than it would with proper handling.

Basic principles: what damages a tap and why

In order to understand how to properly clean and maintain a tap, you first need to understand what actually damages it. The main enemies are four: limescale, aggressive cleaning agents, mechanical damage, and neglected internal maintenance.

Limescale – the quiet, but most dangerous enemy

Limescale (deposits of calcium and magnesium) forms everywhere where water evaporates or where hot water flows. On taps, you can see it as white, gray, or brownish deposits around the outlet, under the lower part of the tap body, around the lever, or on the rotary control. In soft areas (water hardness under 10 °dH), this problem is minimal. In areas with hard water (over 20 °dH, which is common for example in Bratislava and its surroundings or in many parts of central Slovakia), limescale forms quickly – sometimes visible deposits appear within a few weeks.

Limescale is not just an aesthetic issue. Deposits penetrate the area where the aerator (aerator) is screwed in, clogging the aerator mesh. Over the years, they also get into the body of the tap at the moving parts. A clogged aerator significantly reduces water flow – a standard tap at a pressure of 3 bar has a flow of 6–12 l/min, a clogged aerator can reduce it to a third. Limescale also mechanically "blocks" moving parts, so the lever becomes stiffer and the ceramic cartridge wears out excessively with every movement.

Aggressive chemicals – what you should never do

This is paradoxically one of the most common problems we encounter in practice. People buy a powerful descaling agent or disinfectant, thinking they are doing good for the tap, and directly apply concentrated acid (acetic, citric or hydrochloric), or sodium hypochlorite (bleach). The result? The surface finish is damaged, the brass base is corroded, and on chrome, dull spots appear, and on gold or black surfaces, irreversible color changes occur.

Equally dangerous are abrasive cleaning agents, wire brushes, or hard sponges. Chrome has a hard layer, but microscopic scratches damage its structure, which gradually leads to peeling, corrosion spots, and loss of shine. With special surface finishes (gold, black matte, gunmetal, nickel), the situation is even more sensitive.

Mechanical damage – what we overlook

It often happens that a tap gets "hit" by a razor blade ring, a perfume bottle, or a glass container. At first glance, nothing. In reality, microscopic cracks in the surface finish can appear, which are the beginning of later corrosion. Similarly problematic is forceful operation of the lever, when someone "pulls" the lever to the end or leans on the tap when getting up from the bath.

Neglected internal maintenance

Most people only care about the outer surface. The inside of the tap – aerator, cartridge, seals – remains unnoticed for years. Meanwhile, cleaning and possibly replacing aerators every 1–2 years is a simple, 10-minute task that significantly extends the life of the entire tap. Daily care – what should be routine

The cheapest and most effective maintenance is the one that is done regularly and preventively. It doesn’t have to take much time – we’re talking about minutes per week.

After each use – basic routine

Ideally (and with hard water, it is literally recommended) to dry the body of the tap with a soft microfiber cloth after each use. A few seconds are enough. This action prevents water droplets from drying on the surface and leaving calcium deposits or water stains. In practice, it looks simple: a small microfiber towel lies next to the sink or by the bath, with which we wipe the tap after each use of hot water.

A microfiber cloth is important – unlike paper towels or coarse textile cloths, it doesn’t scratch the surface and at the same time absorbs water better than a regular cotton material. The price of such a towel is negligible, but the effect on the long-term appearance of the tap is truly noticeable.

Weekly cleaning – quick and efficient

Once a week (with hard water, even twice a week), you should give the faucet a more thorough cleaning. Use a mild liquid dish soap diluted in water, or a special chrome and stainless steel cleaner marked as suitable for sanitary faucets. Apply a small amount to a soft sponge or cloth, gently wipe the entire surface of the faucet including the base at the sink and the area around the lever. Then rinse with clean water and dry.

Never use:

  • Concentrated acids (acetic, citric, hydrochloric) directly on the surface of the faucet
  • Sodium hypochlorite and chlorine-based products (bleaches)
  • Abasive powders and sanding pastes
  • Steel wool, hard sponges or synthetic scourers
  • Acetone, gasoline, thinners or other organic solvents
  • Alcohol-based sprays directly on seals or plastic parts

Monthly and seasonal maintenance – what most people forget

Cleaning the aerator (aerator) – the most important monthly task

The aerator is a small mesh insert at the end of the faucet outlet. Its purpose is to break the water stream into fine, air-filled droplets – hence the Slovak name aerator. This part gets clogged the fastest, as it is in direct contact with water and limescale.

Step-by-step aerator cleaning procedure:

  1. Unscrew the aerator – usually by hand, or with a special key or flat-blade screwdriver. Be careful, do not force it and do not use pliers without a protective pad, as it may cause scratches.
  2. Disassemble the aerator into individual parts – meshes, rubber seals, plastic inserts. Arrange them on kitchen paper in the order you removed them.
  3. Remove limescale deposits by soaking in a solution of citric acid (1 tablespoon in 200 ml of warm water) for 15–30 minutes. Alternatively, use a special descaling agent for aerators that is safe for rubber seals.
  4. Gently clean the meshes and plastic parts with an old toothbrush under running water.
  5. Rinse all parts with clean water, let them drip dry and reassemble.
  6. Screw the aerator back on – tighten by hand + one slight turn with a tool, do not overtighten.

If the aerator shows a cracked seal or mechanically damaged mesh, it is time to replace it. Aerators are standardized parts (most commonly thread M22×1 or M24×1 external, or M18×1 internal for recessed versions) and replacement parts are available.

Checking and cleaning the trap and drain

While the faucet is responsible for the water supply, the drain is responsible for its removal. A clogged trap under the sink or bathtub causes standing water, unpleasant odors, and long-term effects on humidity in the bathroom. Once every 3 months, it is good to unscrew the trap plug, clean it and rinse it. This is not part of the faucet itself, but the overall hygiene of the bathroom is related to it.

Checking the bottom part of the faucet and seals at the base

Once a month, it is worth looking under the bottom part of the faucet – where the body of the faucet sits on the ceramic of the sink or on the bathtub surface. If you see a brown or greenish coating there, it is a mixture of limescale, corrosion and biological activity (bacteria). This area is particularly difficult to clean, as it is right next to the ceramic surface. The best solution is to moisten a piece of cotton or a cotton swab in a citric acid solution and leave it for 20–30 minutes, then gently clean with a soft sponge.

At the same time, check the rubber seal (O-ring) at the base. If the seal is cracked, hard or deformed, water can accumulate there and gradually damage the ceramic surface or even penetrate into the mounting hole. Special care according to surface finishes

Vittoria faucets are available in various surface finishes, each of which has slightly different cleaning and care requirements. This is an area where mistakes are most commonly made.

Chrome surface – classic, but not invulnerable

Chrome is the most popular and relatively durable surface. The galvanic layer of chrome (commonly thickness 0.3–0.5 μm for decorative chrome) is quite hard, but reacts to prolonged contact with acids. All the above rules apply to chrome surfaces. To restore the shine after removing limescale, you can use a chrome cream or car wax (wax emulsion), which will create a protective layer and make it easier to remove future deposits. Apply a thin layer, let it sit for 2–3 minutes and polish with a soft dry cloth.

Matt nickel and gold surface – require increased caution

Matt and gold surface finishes are significantly more sensitive. The gold surface is in fact a thin layer (several micrometers) of electroplated gold or gold alloy on a chrome base. Any abrasive or acid can irreversibly damage it. For these surfaces, use only a mild liquid soap solution and a soft microfiber cloth. Never use a descaler directly on the surface – if you need to remove limescale, apply it only for a short time (max. 1–2 minutes) to the affected area and rinse immediately. Mat black surface finish – a trend that requires careful maintenance

Mat black radiators have been very fashionable in recent years, but their maintenance is more demanding than for chrome. The matte surface has a microscopically rougher structure, into which water spots and soap films settle much more easily and are more visible than on a glossy surface. Paradoxically, it is precisely the black radiators that require the most frequent drying after every contact with water. Use only gentle products without abrasives and without alcohol. Never polish a matte black surface with polish – it would become glossy and the surface would be irreversibly damaged.

Gunmetal and bronze finishes

These surface finishes combine decorative effect with relative durability. The same rules apply to them as to the gold finish – no direct acids, no abrasives, only gentle soap cleaning and regular drying.

Long-term prevention – what to invest in to extend lifespan

Water softening and filters

If you live in an area with water hardness above 15 °dH, consider installing a water softener or at least a filter before the bathroom supply. A water softener (ion exchange, working on the basis of exchanging Ca²⁺ and Mg²⁺ ions for Na⁺) can reduce water hardness to 5–8 °dH, which dramatically slows down the formation of limescale. For smaller solutions, inline filters (inserted into the cold water supply under the sink) are available, which trap sediments and partially reduce hardness. Their capacity is limited, but as a supplement to regular maintenance, they make sense.

Anti-corrosion and protective products

There are special protective sprays and creams on the market for bathroom fixtures. They work on the principle of a nanocoating or wax emulsion that repels water and soap film. They are applied to a clean and dry surface of the tap once every 4–6 weeks and significantly ease subsequent cleaning. These products are not cheap (5–15 € for a small bottle), but for an expensive tap with gold or black finish, this investment is worthwhile.

For chrome surfaces, car waxes based on carnauba are also suitable – inexpensive, easily available and effective. Apply a thin layer 1–2 times a year, let it dry and polish with a soft cloth.

Water pressure control

Very few people realize this, but excessively high water pressure accelerates the wear of seals and cartridges. The ideal pressure for a household is 2.5–4 bar. If you have a pressure above 5 bar (which can happen in apartments directly connected to the supply without a pressure-reducing valve), seals and cartridges wear out faster and the tap is more likely to start dripping. Annual battery maintenance – comprehensive procedure

Once a year (ideally in spring or autumn), we recommend a comprehensive battery inspection. It is not complicated and can be done by any handy DIY enthusiast. This will help you avoid problems that could later lead to more expensive repairs.

What to check during annual maintenance

  • Aerator: Remove, clean or replace (see the procedure above)
  • Handle / control mobility: The handle should move smoothly without sticking. If it sticks, it may be due to limescale around the cartridge or a worn cartridge
  • Leak check: Turn off all water outlets in the household and check whether any water is dripping from the battery outlet. Even slow dripping (1 drop every 2 seconds = approx. 170 liters per year) indicates a worn cartridge or seal
  • Flexible water supply lines: Look under the sink/bathtub at the hoses or flexible supply lines. Check whether they are cracked, corroded or leaking at the connections. Flexible supply lines should be replaced every 7–10 years as a precaution
  • Seals at the base: Rubber gasket, O-ring at the base – visual inspection, possible replacement
  • Surface condition: Examine the entire surface of the battery under good lighting for micro-cracks, corrosion spots, or discolored stains from chemicals
  • Water flow direction – hot and cold water inlets: Check whether the battery is correctly connected (hot on the left, cold on the right) and whether the inlet seals are leaking

What to do if a problem appears – quick diagnosis

Even with the best care, problems can arise. Here are the most common situations from practice and what to do about them:

Battery dripping from the outlet

Dripping from the outlet when the control is closed is the most common problem. The cause is a worn cartridge or its seals. In practice, this is solved by replacing the cartridge, which is a relatively straightforward task for Vittoria batteries, provided you have the correct type of cartridge. Reduced water flow

If the battery has a weak water flow, but the pressure in the household is otherwise normal, the problem is almost always a clogged aerator. Try the aerator cleaning procedure described above. If the flow remains low even after cleaning the aerator, it may be a clogging inside the body of the battery or a problem with the supply (bent flexible hose, partially closed angle valve).

Battery sticking when operated

A stiff handle or control element most often indicates either limescale around the cartridge or the beginning of wear on the ceramic cartridge. In some cases, applying silicone grease to the accessible moving surfaces (not mineral oil!) may help. If the problem persists, the cartridge usually needs to be replaced.

Stains on the surface that cannot be removed with regular cleaning

If you see permanent dull stains or corrosion spots on the battery, it may be due to several causes: chemical damage from aggressive cleaning agents, surface corrosion due to a damaged chrome layer, or mineral deposits deeply embedded in the surface. In the case of chemical damage, there is no simple solution – the surface is irreversibly damaged and the only option is to replace the battery. This is why prevention (not using aggressive chemicals) is more important than any subsequent repair.

How to maintain a shower and bathtub tap

Shower taps are exposed to more intense contact with soap, shampoo, and conditioners, which leave an oily film. This film needs to be removed more thoroughly – a soap solution or a special cleaner for sanitary fixtures is more suitable than water alone. In addition, the shower hose and shower head are additional places where limescale forms and where regular maintenance is needed – the hose should be disconnected, flushed, and checked for cracks every 6–12 months.

A bathtub tap with a spout has a longer spout arm, where limescale forms intensely – especially at the end of the spout, where water flows out and evaporates. Pay special attention to this area when cleaning.

Practical tips from practice – what really works

After years of customer service, we have identified several tips that really work and are appreciated by customers:

  • Plastic bags and citric acid: Fill a small plastic bag with a citric acid solution, attach it to the tap outlet, and secure it with a rubber band. Let it sit for 30–60 minutes. Limescale on the outlet will soften and can be easily removed. This also works on shower heads.
  • Car wax for chrome: Automotive waxes (e.g., based on carnauba) applied in a thin layer once every few months significantly extend the time between necessary cleanings. Water rolls off such a treated surface and does not dry in stains.
  • Microfiber, not paper: Paper towels can microscopically scratch chrome. Invest in 2–3 microfiber cloths (10 pieces for 5 € in any supermarket) and use them exclusively for taps and sanitary fixtures.
  • Angle valve – don't forget it: Once a year, turn the angle valves under the sink or bathtub from one position to another and back. Valves that have been in the same position for years can seize and you won't be able to close them quickly in case of an emergency.
  • Photograph the condition during installation: Take photos of how the supply hoses are connected, where the valves are, and how the tap looks during installation. This will save time during later repairs or replacement.
  • Silicone grease for moving parts: Silicone grease (not WD-40, not machine oil) is the correct lubricant for rubber seals and moving plastic parts of bathroom taps. Use it during every seal or cartridge replacement.

When is it time for replacement – and not just repair

Some taps can be repaired and their lifespan extended by replacing the cartridge, seals or aerator. However, in practice, we also come across situations where replacing the entire tap is more cost-effective than repairing it. When is that the case?

  • The surface is irreversibly damaged chemically or mechanically (peeling, deep corrosion, discolored)
  • The body of the tap (brass casting) has a crack or fracture – usually after freezing
  • The tap is older than 15–20 years and spare parts (cartridges, seals) are no longer available
  • Repair would cost more than 50–60 % of the price of a new tap of the same quality
  • The tap does not meet current hygiene or efficiency requirements (outdated aerator without flow limiter)

Most frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Can I use WD-40 to treat the moving parts of the tap?

No. WD-40 is a rust inhibitor and moisture displacer, not a lubricant. It is hydrocarbon-based and long-term use damages rubber seals – it swells them, deforms them and accelerates aging. Use only silicone grease or silicone lubricant on the moving parts of bathroom taps, which is compatible with rubber and plastic.

How often should I replace the aerator (aerator)?

With regular cleaning, an aerator can last 5–8 years. If you clean it regularly (every 1–2 months) and the metal parts do not wear out completely, you may not need to replace it for years. Replacement is necessary when the mesh is mechanically damaged, the rubber seal is cracked, or when it does not restore full flow even after thorough cleaning. Replacement aerators are sold as standard consumables.

The tap has lost its shine and is dull, but without stains. Can this be fixed?

It depends on the cause. If the dullness is caused by a thin layer of limescale or soap film, thorough cleaning followed by applying a chrome polish will help. If the dullness is caused by mechanical micro-scratches (e.g. from abrasive cleaning), the surface is damaged and the shine cannot be fully restored. In some cases, a metal polish may help, but the result depends on the depth of the damage. The best prevention is to avoid using abrasive products from the start.

Is it advisable to leave the tap unused for a longer period (e.g. during a holiday)?

For short absences (1–2 weeks), it is sufficient to close the stop valves under the sink and leave the tap empty. For longer periods of non-use (more than a month, e.g. a cottage), we recommend closing the main water supply, draining the water from the pipes and leaving the tap open (unsealed), so it can breathe.
