The combination of permanent moisture, temperature fluctuations, chemicals from cleaning agents and mechanical wear makes the bathroom an environment that can destroy even relatively expensive furniture within a few years – if it is not given proper attention. After many years of experience in practical work with customers, it is possible to identify three main categories of problems that customers repeatedly encounter: material swelling, surface damage caused by moisture and malfunction of the hanging system. Each of these problems has its specific causes, prognosis and solution – and in many cases, they can be avoided by choosing the right furniture and regular maintenance.

This article aims to provide a truly practical view of what happens in bathrooms and why. Not generic advice like "keep it dry", but concrete technical information that will help you recognize a problem in its early stage, understand its cause and decide whether it is worth repairing or replacing.

Why is the bathroom such a demanding environment for furniture

Before we get into specific problems, it is important to understand the physical context. An average bathroom without particularly good ventilation reaches a relative humidity of 90–100% during a shower. After the shower, the humidity gradually decreases, but in poorly ventilated bathrooms, it can remain at 70–80% for hours. Wood and chipboard are hygroscopic materials – this means they absorb air humidity. When wood absorbs moisture, it swells. When it dries, it shrinks. This cycle repeated several times a day over years literally exhausts the material and starts to break it down.

In addition to humidity, there is also chemical stress. Common bathroom cleaning products contain acids, bases or chlorine compounds. These damage films, varnishes and edges of boards. And finally, mechanical stress – cabinet doors open and close on average several thousand times a year, which places high demands on the hanging system.

From the graph it is clear that furniture is not exposed to one-time humidity, but to repeating peaks. This cyclic load is more dangerous than one-time soaking.

Swelling of chipboard and MDF – how to recognize it and what to do about it

The most common problem we encounter with cheaper bathroom furniture is swelling of the load-bearing material – i.e. chipboard (MDF) or MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard). Both of these materials are basically wood fibers or chips glued together and pressed under pressure. When they come into contact with moisture – especially through unsealed edges or damaged parts of the surface – the material starts to swell.

Swelling is typically manifested in several places:

  • Bottom edges of cabinets – the part closest to the floor where condensation water runs
  • Areas around the drain hole or drain pipe – here the edge banding (ABS strip on the edges) is most often disturbed during installation
  • Inside the cabinet under the sink – the place where condensation drips from the drain or where minor leaks occur from the faucet connection
  • Back wall of the cabinet – if it is placed directly against a damp wall without a gap, it absorbs moisture from the masonry

In practice, it looks like this: a customer calls after two years saying that the doors of the lower cabinet cannot be closed. When we look at the location, the bottom of the side board looks like a sponge – the material has grown by 5 to 8 millimeters, the film has peeled off and the edge banding has come off. Inside the cabinet under the drain, there is a visible dark stain of mold. This condition is practically irreparable, at least not aesthetically – maybe temporarily sanding the swelling, but the material has lost its structural integrity and the problem will soon return.

Difference between cheap chipboard and bathroom chipboard

Not all chipboard is the same. Bathroom furniture should be made from chipboard class P3 or higher (according to EN 312 standard), or from so-called Aqua or Hydro board – which is a special pressed chipboard with resistance to moisture. Standard chipboard class P2 (interior) swells after long-term exposure to humidity below 20% within 2–3 years. Bathroom P3 lasts much longer – and in combination with the right surface and thorough edge banding, it can function for 10–15 years without visible damage.

A similar principle applies to MDF. Standard MDF is extremely sensitive to moisture – more than chipboard, because its fibers are finer and absorb water faster. There is HMR (Moisture Resistant) MDF, which is green-colored and has significantly better resistance. When buying furniture, ask the seller or check the product's technical specifications for these parameters.

What to do in case of mild swelling

If the swelling is caught early – that is, the edging has come loose, but the core of the panel is not yet significantly swollen – there are a few rescue steps. The edge can be dried (with hot air from a hair dryer, never with a direct flame), coated with waterproof sealant or PVA glue with excellent resistance to moisture, and covered with a new ABS strip, which can be purchased by the meter. However, the result will never be as perfect as the original factory-pressed edge. In practice, we always tell customers right away: it is a rescue, not a restoration.

If the swelling is extensive (more than 3 mm on an area larger than a hand), the entire panel must be replaced. And with older cabinets, it is economically sensible to consider replacing the entire unit – especially if the furniture is older than 7–10 years and the warranty period has expired.

Surface damage due to moisture – foils, varnishes and acrylic doors

The surface layer of bathroom furniture is the first line of defense. There are several basic types of surfaces, and each has its own weaknesses:

  • Melamine foil – an inexpensive and easily available surface. Its resistance to moisture is satisfactory as long as it is intact. The problem arises when it is scratched or cut – the damaged area absorbs moisture immediately. Another issue: melamine does not tolerate acidic cleaning agents or acetone – the surface becomes cloudy or starts to flake.
  • Varnish layer (PU varnish, UV varnish) – significantly more resistant than melamine, but sensitive to mechanical damage. Once scratched, the varnish cannot be locally repaired without a visible difference. An advantage is the greater depth of surface protection – cheap varnish has 0.2–0.3 mm, while quality UV varnish for bathroom furniture has 0.5–0.8 mm.
  • Acrylic doors (High Gloss) – a very popular surface in modern bathrooms. Acrylic is essentially plastic glued onto MDF or DTD. It is very resistant to moisture and chemicals, but extremely prone to scratches. Moreover – improper cleaning (abrasive sponges, abrasive agents) will cause it to lose its gloss within a few months.
  • Natural oil or wooden surface – beautiful, but in the bathroom it requires regular oiling or varnishing. Without it, the oil will begin to wrinkle and detach from the base. In practice, we recommend oiled furniture only for bathrooms with excellent ventilation and low steam levels (e.g., spacious bathrooms with a window).

Whitening and condensation stains

A typical problem that customers describe as "white residue" or "stains that cannot be wiped away" – it is about condensation stains from minerals in hard water or the so-called blushing effect in varnishes. Blushing occurs when moisture enters the varnish faster than it can escape, creating microscopic air bubbles beneath the surface – the surface becomes cloudy or whitens.

Condensation stains from hard water (limescale) are a combination of calcium and magnesium carbonates. They can be removed with a weak citric acid solution (1 teaspoon per 200 ml of water), but be careful – the same solution will damage natural stone (marble, travertine) and some types of varnished surfaces. Always test first on an inconspicuous area.

Damaged hinges – the most common cause of malfunctioning doors

The hinge system is the mechanically most stressed part of the entire bathroom furniture. At first glance, it seems simple – two metal or plastic components connected by an axis – in reality, it is a precisely adjusted mechanism that must withstand tens of thousands of opening and closing cycles during the entire lifespan of the cabinet.

Modern bathroom cabinets typically use two types of hinges:

  • Hinge (butt hinge) – the European standard, used in most cabinets. It has two parts: the hinge itself (welded to the door) and the mounting plate attached to the cabinet body. Adjustment of the door position is possible in all three axes – height, depth, and lateral shift. Typical load capacity: 20–25 kg per hinge at 35 mm projection.
  • Piano hinge (continuous) – a long hinge running the entire height of the door. Much more resistant to twisting, used for heavier or taller doors. The disadvantage is more complex adjustability and the visibility of the hinge.

Why hinges fail – specific causes

From practice, hinges of bathroom cabinets fail for these reasons:

  • Corrosion – the hinge is made of galvanized steel or stainless steel. Cheap hinges have only a thin layer of zinc, which eventually breaks down and the hinge starts to rust. The problem first appears visually (brown stains), then functionally (the hinge stiffens and starts to squeak).
  • Plastic parts of hinges – some manufacturers save on the quality of plastics. UV radiation from bathroom lighting, temperature fluctuations, and cleaning agents cause the plastic to become brittle. The hinge then breaks suddenly, without warning.
  • Improper adjustment during installation – the doors were crooked from day one and the hinge was never properly adjusted. This is insidious because the doors are still functional, but the hinge carries the load unevenly and over time it deforms or pulls the panel out.
  • Cracked hinge mortise – the mortise (hole in the door into which the hinge is inserted) is milled directly into the wood or DTD. If the material is wet and swollen, the mortise expands and the hinge loses its support. The doors start to "dance" and each opening makes the situation worse.
  • Loose mounting plate screws – the hinge mounting plate is held in the cabinet body by 2–4 screws. If the cabinet is made from low-quality DTD, the screws gradually loosen – the material around them crumbles. A temporary fix is a larger screw or padding with wooden material, but in the long run, the panel must be replaced.

How to Adjust the Hinges and When to Replace Them

Adjusting a cabinet hinge is relatively simple and can be done by anyone with a screwdriver. Each hinge has three screws (depending on the manufacturer, they may also have eccentric adjusters):

The first screw controls the lateral movement of the door (left / right). The second screw adjusts the depth – that is, how far the door is from the cabinet body when closed. The third screw (on the plate) allows the entire hinge to be moved up or down. Properly adjusted doors should have even gaps on all sides (usually 2–3 mm) and should close without slamming or sticking.

Replace the hinge if it is visibly rusted, if cracks appear in it, if it cannot be adjusted despite the screws being in good condition, or if the door again shifts to the side after adjustment – this indicates deformation of the hinge or the cabinet body. Replacement hinges are available according to the size of the hinge (26 mm, 35 mm, 40 mm) and the opening angle (95°, 110°, 165°).

Mold and Hygiene Problems Inside the Cabinets

Mold is a direct consequence of moisture – but it does not always relate to swelling. Sometimes the surface of the cabinet from the outside is fine, but the inside is covered with dark mold spots. This often happens in the lower cabinets under the sink, where air circulation is limited and the temperature is lower than in the rest of the bathroom.

There are two causes of mold inside the cabinet: either there are small leaks from the trap or the plumbing connection (this is common – hoses can loosen or age and start to drip), or the internal environment of the cabinet is constantly moist due to condensation on the cold surface (e.g., a cold external wall during the winter period).

Prevention: check all trap and plumbing connections at least once a year. Wipe the inside of the cabinet with a dry cloth after any major leak. If you have a chronic condensation problem, consider installing a small dehumidifier or silica gel bags inside the cabinet – replace them every 2–3 months.

To remove existing mold: a solution of bleach (1 part to 10 parts of water) is effective, but aggressive to surfaces. For melamine surfaces, a hydrogen peroxide solution (3 %) is gentler. After treatment, dry thoroughly and ventilate. If mold returns despite treatment, it is a sign of a structural moisture problem that needs to be addressed at the source.

Practical Prevention – What Really Works

From long-term experience, there are specific measures that have a proven impact on the lifespan of bathroom furniture. Not general recommendations, but things that are really worth doing:

  • Ventilate for at least 15 minutes after each shower – an open window or a running fan. This one measure will extend the life of your furniture by years. If your bathroom has no window, a recuperative fan with a timer is a good investment.
  • Leave the cabinet doors slightly open – the inside of the cabinet under the sink is naturally more humid than the surroundings. If you leave the doors open after using the bathroom, air circulates and the cabinet dries out.
  • Apply silicone to contact surfaces – the areas where the cabinet sits on the floor or against the wall can be treated with transparent sanitary silicone. This prevents water from creeping up from the bottom.
  • Regularly check trap connections – once a year, pull each hose and check if the seal is dripping. A small drop every week can cause huge damage in a year.
  • Do not use aggressive cleaning products – a mild liquid cleaner, a microfiber cloth, and clean water are sufficient. Be careful with abrasive products (bathroom sand) – they can damage an acrylic surface within a few months.
  • Do not store wet items directly on the furniture – wet towels, sponges, or plastic bottles with a water spot on the bottom cause permanent stains and local surface damage.

When to Repair and When to Replace – Economic Reality

This is a question that customers often address. The answer depends on the age of the furniture, the extent of the damage, and its price. Here is a rough rule from practice:

If the furniture is less than 3 years old and the damage is localized (one panel, one hinge, peeled edge trim) – it is worth repairing. Replacing a hinge costs a few euros, as does a new ABS strip on the edge. If the furniture is 5–8 years old and has multiple problems at once – consider whether the repair will delay the replacement by another year or five years. If the swelling is extensive or multiple panels are damaged, the repair is financially unreasonable. Furniture older than 10 years with significant problems is almost always recommended to be replaced – not only for economic reasons, but also for hygiene (mold in the material cannot be completely removed).

When choosing new furniture, consider what failed with the old one. If you had problems with moisture, look for furniture with certified moisture resistance, high-quality edge banding (ABS strip thickness at least 1.5–2 mm), and hinges with steel pins and nylon inserts. Why did white stains appear on the doors of my bathroom cabinet that cannot be wiped away?

It is most likely limescale deposits (calcium carbonate) from hard water or condensation stains. Try a weak solution of citric acid (1 teaspoon in 200 ml of water), apply it for several minutes and gently wipe with a damp cloth. If the stains cannot be removed this way, it may be a surface damage (e.g. the varnish has dulled due to aggressive cleaning agents) – in such a case, a local repair is practically impossible and you should consider replacing the doors or the entire cabinet.

The doors of my cabinet are not closing evenly – one corner is hanging lower. Can this be adjusted?

Yes, in the vast majority of cases it is a simple adjustment of the hinge. Every standard pivot hinge has screws for adjustment in all three axes. The side screw on the hinge moves the door left/right, the central screw (depth adjustment) controls the distance from the cabinet body, and the top plate screw (height adjustment) moves the door up/down. A cross-head screwdriver and patience are sufficient – adjust one hinge at a time and check the result. If the doors return to the crooked position after adjustment, the hinge is deformed or damaged and needs to be replaced.

The bottom of my lower bathroom cabinet has swollen and looks like a sponge. Can this be repaired?

If the swelling is extensive (the entire bottom edge or corner area), the material has lost its structural strength and the repair will not be long-lasting. Local minor swelling (up to 5 mm on a small area) can be stopped by drying and treating with a water-repellent adhesive with a new ABS strip, but the result will never be perfect. How long should bathroom furniture last?

It depends on the quality of the material, the conditions in the bathroom and the level of care. Cheap furniture made from standard MDF with a thin melamine surface will last 3–5 years without visible problems, after which swelling and hinge corrosion will start to appear. The mid-range category (bathroom MDF P3, quality hinges, thicker edge banding) will last 8–12 years under average load. Premium furniture made from HMR MDF, lacquered with UV or acrylic lacquer, with stainless steel hinges can function without problems for 15–20 years – provided the bathroom is well-ventilated and the furniture is regularly maintained.

Can I replace only the hinge without having to change the entire door?

Yes, the hinge is a standardized component and in the vast majority of cases it is replaceable. You need to know the pin diameter (most commonly 35 mm, less often 26 or 40 mm), the hinge opening angle (95°, 110° or 165° for corner cabinets) and the type of plate (straight, corner, with a shortened arm). This information is listed in the furniture documentation or you can measure the existing hinge. Spare hinges are cheap and readily available – the replacement takes 10–15 minutes.

I have a chronic problem with mold on the silicone and furniture in my bathroom. What should I do in the long term?

Mold is always a symptom of insufficient ventilation. Short-term solutions (silicone with fungicidal additive, regular cleaning with chlorine-based products) work, but the problem returns. A long-term solution involves ensuring active ventilation – a recovery fan with a timer that is automatically activated when the light is on or when humidity exceeds 70 % is a standard solution. If the bathroom has no window, this is practically essential. Also consider replacing the silicone joints – old silicone with embedded mold cannot be cleaned to a sterile state, it must be completely removed and new silicone (preferably with a fungicidal additive) applied.
