1. Dripping from the outlet – the most common problem
A dripping tap is by far the most common problem. Although it may seem like "just a few drops," in practice, it represents a loss of 15–30 liters of water per day at a slower drip rate, and 60–100 liters at a faster rate. Over a month, this adds up to hundreds of liters of unnecessarily lost water and money on the water bill. The causes are usually two: a worn-out cartridge or a damaged seal.
Worn-out cartridge
Lever (single-handle) Viking taps use a ceramic cartridge that controls the mix of hot and cold water as well as the flow. The ceramic plates inside the cartridge have a long lifespan (usually withstand 500,000 opening/closing cycles), but they can be damaged by coarse mechanical impurities in the water, limescale deposits, or wear at higher water pressure. When the cartridge stops sealing, water seeps past the ceramic plates even in the closed position.
Repair: It is necessary to remove the cartridge and replace it with a new one. Loose or damaged supply hoses
Supply hoses from the tap to the angle valves (usually braided stainless steel, length 30–60 cm) have threaded connections at both ends. If the nuts are loose or the seal (usually a flat rubber ring) has hardened and cracked, water seeps through the connection. Solution: Tighten the nuts (not excessively, just "firmly by hand + 1/4 turn with a wrench"), or replace the flat seal. If the braiding of the hose is cracked, replace the entire hose – the risk of bursting and flooding is too high.
Loose tap connection nut
The tap itself is attached to the sink, basin, or countertop using mounting nuts from below (so-called cup washer or mounting plate). If this nut becomes loose, the tap moves and the damaged base seal causes a leak. Solution: Tighten the mounting nut using a special tap wrench (so-called "monkey wrench" or plastic mounting wrench), or replace the base seal.
Cracked tap body
This is less common, but it does happen – especially if the tap froze (for example, in a cabin or in an unheated space). A cracked metal tap body (brass, zinc alloy) cannot be reliably repaired. 3. Stiff lever – difficult turning or sliding
If you have to exert effort to turn the lever or it "jams", this is a problem mainly in areas with hard water (most of Slovakia has medium-hard to hard water, 2–4 mmol/l). Limescale deposits on the moving parts of the cartridge, on the outer casing and inside the head of the faucet.
Procedure for a stiff lever
- Close the water supply (angle valve or shut-off valve on the riser).
- Unscrew the lever cover (usually under the decorative cover is a screw, most often 3 mm or 4 mm hex key).
- Remove the lever and clean the cover plate.
- Remove the cartridge. Check if it is whitened by limescale – this is a typical problem.
- Place the cartridge in a solution of vinegar water (1 part vinegar + 3 parts water) for 2–4 hours. Vinegar will dissolve the limescale.
- After removing the cartridge, gently clean it with a soft cloth, rinse with clean water and apply a thin layer of silicone lubricant (not oil-based – it damages the rubber).
- If the cartridge remains stiff or is visibly damaged, replace it with a new one.

4. Loose lever or lever that does not stay in position
The opposite problem is a lever that is too loose, "sways" or does not stay in the set position. The causes are two:
- Loose lever screw: Under the decorative cover is a fixing screw (most often hex key 3 mm or 4 mm). It is enough to tighten it. Caution – do not over-tighten to avoid cutting the thread in the softer material (zinc alloy).
- Worn cartridge: If the ceramic cartridge is mechanically damaged or worn, it cannot maintain the set lever position. The solution is to replace the cartridge.
5. Weak water flow – low pressure from the faucet
This problem is manifested by the fact that water flows out of the faucet weaker than it should – even though the pressure in the entire apartment's water supply is normal. There can be several causes:
Clogged aerator (mesh air inlet)
The aerator is a small screw-on fitting at the end of the faucet outlet. Inside it is a mesh filter that aerates the water flow and gives it a "soft" character. However, this mesh gets clogged with limescale deposits and dirt. Cleaning is simple:
- Unscrew the aerator (standard thread M22 × 1 or M24 × 1 – depending on the faucet).
- Disassemble it into parts – mesh, rubber gasket, plastic/metal diffuser.
- Soak them in vinegar for 30–60 minutes.
- Gently clean with a cloth and rinse.
- If the mesh is too deformed, buy a replacement aerator (price 1–3 €, available in any hardware store according to the thread size).

The normal operating pressure in apartments is 2.5–4 bar. If the pressure drops below 1 bar, the faucets (especially thermostatic ones) do not function properly. In such a case, it is necessary to contact the building manager or water utility.
6. Viking thermostatic faucet does not set the correct temperature
Viking thermostatic faucets are more sophisticated than lever faucets, and therefore have some specific faults. The thermostat inside contains a temperature-sensitive element (usually a wax cartridge or bimetallic joint), which automatically reacts to changes in water temperature. Common problems:
Thermostat does not set the desired temperature (water too cold or hot)
If the thermostat constantly delivers water that is colder or hotter than the set position, the thermostat needs recalibration. Most Viking thermostats have an adjustable temperature limit – a small plastic/metal limiter on the thermostatic valve or under the handle, which ensures that the handle does not go beyond 38 °C (safety position). If this limiter has shifted or been removed, the thermostat does not regulate properly. In this case, it is necessary to replace the entire thermostatic cartridge (thermostatic cylinder). Thermostatic tap "vibrates" or makes noise
Vibrations or tapping at a thermostatic tap are usually a sign that the water pressure is too high (over 5 bar), or that the pressure difference between hot and cold water is too large (more than 2 bar). Solution: install or adjust a pressure reducer on the water supply. The optimal pressure for thermostatic taps is 2–4 bar, with a maximum pressure difference of 1:2 between the hot and cold lines.
7. The tap "sings" or makes a whistling sound during flow
Whistling or squeaking during water flow is a problem that can have several causes:
- Worn or deformed cartridge: When the ceramic surfaces of the cartridge are not smooth, water flowing through them "squeaks". Solution: replace the cartridge.
- Partially closed angle valve: If the angle valve (regulator) is not fully open, the water flow is restricted and a squeaking sound occurs. Solution: fully open the supply.
- Clogged aerator: A partially clogged aerator can produce sound during flow. Solution: clean the aerator (see above).

8. The lever returns to the middle position by itself
Some Viking taps (especially kitchen taps with a high spout) have taps with so-called self-closing cartridges – after releasing the lever, it returns to the closed position by itself. The diverter switch does not work properly or does not stay in place
The diverter (usually push or rotary) controls where the water flows – into the bath or the sprayer hose. If the diverter does not hold the position, water flows from both outlets at the same time, or it refuses to switch. Cause: wear of the rubber seal inside the switching mechanism. 10. Corrosion and surface damage – when the tap is "beyond repair"
