Grundfos was one of the pioneers of electronically commutated motors (EC motors) in circulation pumps, and thanks to this, their premium models achieve very low energy consumption – in the range of 3–8 W for typical residential heating, which is a fraction of the consumption of old flooded three-phase pumps.

Wilo – German precision for demanding applications

Wilo is a German company based in Dortmund, founded in 1872. Originally it was engaged in the production of metal products, but in the 20th century it reoriented to pump technology and today is among the top 3 global pump manufacturers. On the Slovak and Czech markets, Wilo has a strong position – their Stratos and Star series pumps are very widespread in the residential segment.

Wilo is traditionally strong in technical innovation. They were one of the first companies to introduce pumps with integrated differential pressure regulation to the market – that is, pumps that automatically adjust performance to the current system needs. German engineers from Wilo also develop solutions for larger commercial objects and industry, which is reflected in the robustness of their construction.

DAB – Italian engineering school at a reasonable price

DAB Pumps is an Italian company with a long tradition. Unlike Grundfos and Wilo, DAB does not have such a strong marketing reach, but in the professional community it has built a reputation as a reliable and cost-effective alternative without unnecessary compromises in quality. Their circulation pumps of the EVOP and A series are popular especially among installers who are looking for a good price/performance ratio without the need to pay a premium for the brand.

DAB is typical of the Italian approach – practical design, emphasis on simplicity of installation and operation, and price accessibility that opens the market to investors with a limited budget. This does not mean cheap quality – DAB pumps meet European standards including energy class A and their flooded pumps can handle demanding operating conditions.

Wet rotor vs. dry rotor design

All three brands primarily offer wet rotor circulation pumps – that is, those in which the motor rotor is immersed directly in the medium (water). This design is dominant in heating systems because it does not require lubrication, is almost silent and practically maintenance-free. Grundfos dominates in the residential segment with the ALPHA2, ALPHA3 and MAGNA3 ranges. ALPHA2 is a pump for typical family houses with a pressure head of up to about 4 m w.c. and a flow rate of up to 3.5 m³/h – it can handle a heating system in a family house up to about 200 m² without problems. MAGNA3 is a premium model with an extended range of performance, an integrated display and the possibility of communication via Bluetooth and the GO Remote app.

Wilo offers in a similar category the Stratos PICO, Stratos MAXO and Star-RS ranges. Circulation pumps differ in so-called construction length – the distance between the flange/thread axes. Standard values are 130 mm, 180 mm and 280 mm. In practice, this is one of the reasons why installers stick to the same brand – if there was a Grundfos 130 mm in the boiler room, they simply order a new Grundfos 130 mm and know it will fit without additional adapters. Grundfos – AUTOADAPT and individual regulation

This is a topic that customers often underestimate when buying, but during operation it can really be annoying. Modern wet rotor EC pumps are generally very quiet – they operate in the range of 20–35 dB(A) under normal conditions. But there are differences:

  • Grundfos ALPHA2/ALPHA3: Among the quietest on the market – almost inaudible at low speeds (approx. 20 dB). In practice, customers install them directly in the living areas of technical rooms without special damping.
  • Wilo Stratos PICO: Comparable noise level, the manufacturer specifies ≤ 35 dB at maximum speed. Some installers have noted a slight mechanical hum at specific frequencies, which can be amplified by resonant pipe construction.
  • DAB EVOP PLUS: Slightly noisier than the premium Grundfos at the same performance point – in practice, the difference is about 3–5 dB. For installation in a separate boiler room, this is negligible, but for installation in a kitchen utility room or an apartment, it may be relevant.

This is an area where the differences between brands are most noticeable in everyday practical work. Approximate prices for standard residential models (excluding VAT, status 2024–2025):

Scenario 1: Single-family house up to 200 m² with an old natural gas boiler

This is the most common pump replacement scenario we encounter. An old house, boiler Immergas or Junkers, a worn-out three-speed pump from 2003, the customer wants something reliable without unnecessary complications. We recommend Grundfos ALPHA2 or Wilo Stratos PICO – both can handle this house with ease, both have automatic regulation, both have EEI well below 0.23. The price is comparable, and the only deciding factors may be availability at the local wholesaler and the fact that the installer is used to one of the brands.

Scenario 2: Apartment building with 24 apartments and a shared heating system

This situation is different – we need a pump with higher performance (typically DN32 or DN40, flow 5–15 m³/h), reliability in continuous operation, and ideally also the possibility of monitoring. Grundfos MAGNA3 or Wilo Stratos MAXO are natural choices here. The heat meter function in MAGNA3 can help the building manager identify energy losses in the system. DAB offers a smaller selection in this segment and is less interesting for building managers precisely due to limited remote management capabilities.

Scenario 3: Air-to-water heat pump in a new build

Special requirements apply to heat pumps – the pump must operate with higher flows at a lower temperature difference (typically 35/30 °C instead of 75/55 °C with a boiler). Gravity heating systems have large pipe diameters (DN 32–50), low network resistance, and require a pump with a high flow at low pressure – typically Q > 3 m³/h at H < 1.5 m. Classic DAB A 50/180 or Wilo Star-RS 25/6 are ideal for these systems – their Q/H curve is flatter and they do not stall at fully open valve nodes. Grundfos ALPHA2 with AUTOADAPT can sometimes be too "aggressive" in regulation for these systems, although it works correctly when properly set up.

All three brands offer a standard warranty of 24 months. Grundfos and Wilo offer an extension of the warranty to 3–5 years upon product registration (depending on the specific model and country). The lifespan of modern wet rotor EC pumps is typically 15–25 years with proper sizing and water quality – significantly longer than old triple-speed pumps.

The key factor in the lifespan is not the quality of the pump itself, but the quality of the water in the system. Contaminated water with high oxygen content or solid impurities (rust from pipes) destroys bearings faster than any overload. Most frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Is Grundfos really better than Wilo, or is it just marketing?

Honest answer: both brands are at a comparable technical level in the premium segments. Grundfos has a slight advantage in the AUTOADAPT algorithm and the width of the service network, while Wilo has an advantage in more intuitive physical controls and Wi-Fi connectivity of some models. For the average customer, the difference in daily operation is minimal – much more important is the correct selection of performance and control mode.

Is it worth investing in the premium Grundfos MAGNA3 if I have a simple family home?

In most cases, no. MAGNA3 has features (heat energy measurement, remote management, extended performance range) that you will never use in a standard family home. For a family home, Grundfos ALPHA2 or Wilo Stratos PICO offer a much better price-to-utility ratio. MAGNA3 makes sense for apartment buildings, commercial properties, or installations where the manager needs remote monitoring.

Can I replace Grundfos with DAB without modifying the piping?

Yes, if both pumps have the same construction length (130 mm, 180 mm or 280 mm) and the same thread size (G 1¼" or G 1½"). This is technical condition number 1 for replacement. Check these values on the old pump's nameplate or in the catalog. The performance difference is not a problem – modern EC pumps automatically regulate their performance.

Why is my new DAB pump noisy, while Grundfos in the neighbor's boiler room is quiet?

Noise depends on several factors: water quality (air in the system causes cavitation and noise), proper air venting of the pump after installation, pressure setting in the expansion tank and hydraulic balancing of the system. The pump itself is rarely the source of the problem – much more often it is air in the system or unbalanced circuits. Can I use one circulation pump for heating and hot water preparation (boiler)?

No, this is not recommended. The heating circuit and the circulation circuit for hot water preparation (TÚV, sanitary water circulation) are two different circuits with different requirements for material and hygiene standards. For sanitary circulation (against legionella), special pumps made of stainless steel are used (Grundfos UP, Wilo Star-Z, DAB DCi). Heating pumps made of cast iron or bronze are not suitable for this purpose.

What is the real electricity saving after replacing an old pump with a modern EC pump?

An old wet rotor pump from the years 2000–2008 typically consumes 60–120 W in continuous operation. At 6,000 hours of annual operation (heating season + summer operation of TÚV), this is 360–720 kWh/year. A modern EC pump (Grundfos ALPHA2, Wilo Stratos, DAB EVOP) consumes 3–15 W – that is 18–90 kWh/year. The difference is 300–600 kWh, which at an electricity price of 0.20–0.25 €/kWh represents 60–150 € savings per year. The pump thus pays for itself in 1–3 years just from energy savings.

After years of work with heating systems, I can say that I have seen far more problems caused by incorrectly sized pumps from the right brand than by correctly sized pumps from any of these three brands. Grundfos, Wilo and DAB all produce quality products that, when chosen correctly, last for decades.

Grundfos excels in intelligent automatic control and extremely low consumption – it is the choice for those who want the best without compromise and are willing to pay extra for it.
