Comparison of SINCLAIR air conditioners by model and capacity

Why it pays to compare SINCLAIR air conditioners systematically

The brand SINCLAIR is among the most popular air conditioning systems on the Slovak and Czech markets, covering the entire range from small apartment units to commercial installations with power in the tens of kilowatts. The reason is simple - the combination of reasonable pricing, wide availability of service and spare parts in our market, and technically advanced components (compressors from renowned manufacturers, inverter control, modern refrigerants R32) makes Sinclair a choice that is selected by private customers for their homes as well as installation companies when realizing offices, shops, or family houses.

The problem we encounter in daily advisory work, however, is that the SINCLAIR catalog contains dozens of model series and hundreds of specific type designations within them. An average customer easily gets lost in numbers and letters such as ASH-09AIN PT or ASH-28AC. The goal of this article is therefore to create a clear guide - to explain how to navigate model designations, what each series actually means in terms of performance and purpose, and to show on specific examples from our offer when it is worth reaching for a smaller and when for a more powerful model.

How to read SINCLAIR model designations

The majority of wall-mounted split air conditioners sold in the Slovak market bear the basic designation ASH, which is an abbreviation for air split home - i.e., a wall-mounted split system primarily intended for households, apartments, and smaller commercial spaces. After the abbreviation ASH follows a hyphen and a two- or three-digit number indicating the performance class in hundreds of BTU/h (British Thermal Unit per hour). This number is key for initial orientation:

  • 09 - performance class approximately 9000 BTU/h, which corresponds to a cooling capacity of about 2.5 - 2.6 kW
  • 12/13 - performance class 12000 - 13000 BTU/h, cooling capacity approximately 3.2 - 3.7 kW
  • 18 - performance class 18000 BTU/h, cooling capacity around 5.0 - 5.3 kW
  • 24 - performance class 24000 BTU/h, cooling capacity approximately 6.8 - 7.1 kW
  • 28 - performance class 28000 BTU/h, cooling capacity approximately 7.9 - 8.2 kW

After the numeric code follow letter suffixes that specify the technical configuration of the unit. In practice, we most often encounter these combinations:

Suffix AIN - inverter units

The designation AIN indicates that it is an inverter unit with continuous regulation of the compressor power. The inverter allows the air conditioner to operate in a wide range of compressor speeds instead of simple on/off switching, resulting in significantly more stable room temperature, quieter operation, and lower electricity consumption. Models with this suffix, such as SINCLAIR ASH-09AIN PT or SINCLAIR ASH-24AIN PT, make up the majority of sales today, as inverter control is clearly more advantageous in terms of operating costs.

Suffixes AK and AC - simpler or other construction series

Designations such as AK or AC are used in the SINCLAIR catalog for other construction series of indoor and outdoor units, which may differ in cover design, placement of control elements, noise level, or additional equipment. The model SINCLAIR ASH-13AK represents a mid-range performance class with a balanced price-to-performance ratio, while SINCLAIR ASH-28AC belongs to a higher performance category intended for larger rooms or spaces with higher thermal load.

Supplement PT and other abbreviations

The suffix PT appears in the designation of models with extended equipment - usually it refers to a combination of a WiFi module for control via a mobile app, a better filtration system, and a quieter indoor unit operation. When selecting a model, we therefore recommend not to look only at the performance number, but to read the entire code as well, because it is precisely the letter suffixes that determine whether the unit will have intelligent control, about which we write in detail in a separate article Wall-mounted air conditioning with WiFi and intelligent control.

Performance classes of SINCLAIR air conditioners and their practical use

The basic rule for selecting the performance of an air conditioner is: for each square meter of a standard living room with a standard ceiling height (2.6 - 2.8 m), we estimate approximately 60 to 100 W of cooling capacity, depending on the building's thermal insulation, window orientation to cardinal directions, number and size of glazed areas, and the number of people who usually stay in the room. A detailed calculation procedure can be found in a separate article How much air conditioner capacity do I need according to room size, but here we will show an overview directly on SINCLAIR models.

9k 13k 18k 24k 28k kW Estimated cooling capacity according to performance class (BTU/h) 2,6 3,5 5,3 7,0 8,2

From the graph it is clear that the difference between the smallest model 09 and the largest model 28 from the standard ASH series is more than threefold. This has a direct practical impact - while a 9000 BTU unit covers a bedroom or a smaller office up to approximately 25 - 28 m², a 28000 BTU unit is intended more for an open living room with a kitchen, a larger office, or a business with high thermal load (more people, equipment, glazed areas) with an area of 65 - 80 m² and more.

SINCLAIR ASH-09AIN PT - entry-level for smaller spaces

SINCLAIR ASH-09AIN PT is an inverter unit with a cooling capacity of around 2.6 kW, which is most often installed in bedrooms, children's rooms, smaller offices, or cottage spaces. Thanks to inverter control, it can operate at low compressor speeds, which is especially appreciated by customers sensitive to noise during sleep - the unit in night quiet mode achieves a sound pressure level comparable to quiet ventilation. The suffix PT also brings WiFi control, so the temperature can be set from a mobile device even before arriving home. This class is a typical solution for the query "I need to cool one room of 25 m²".

SINCLAIR ASH-13AK - universal mid-range

SINCLAIR ASH-13AK represents a performance class of around 3.5 kW and in practice is probably the most universally requested performance - it covers a standard living room, a combined living room with a kitchen in a smaller apartment, or an office for 1-2 workstations. In installations in two-room apartments, this performance is often the number one choice, as it provides sufficient reserve even at temperatures above 32 °C, but at the same time is not unnecessarily oversized, which would lead to unnecessary compressor cycling (frequent switching on and off shortens its lifespan and worsens temperature regulation comfort).

SINCLAIR ASH-24AIN PT - performance for open spaces

SINCLAIR ASH-24AIN PT with a power of approximately 7.0 kW is a typical choice for open living areas such as a living room combined with a kitchen and dining area, larger office spaces or shops. Thanks to its inverter control, this unit can also handle situations where the room is glazed on two sides and heats up significantly in summer due to solar radiation. In our installation practice, this power is often recommended when a customer is deciding between one larger unit and two smaller ones - a single central unit of 24k is able to efficiently serve an open space without the need to consider a multi-split connection.

SINCLAIR ASH-28AC - the most powerful model in the compared range

SINCLAIR ASH-28AC with a power of around 8.2 kW belongs to the most powerful wall-mounted units in the range. It finds its application in large spaces over 65 m², in premises with high visitor traffic (restaurants, shops, fitness studios) or in halls with higher ceiling height, where the thermal load is significantly higher compared to a standard apartment. With this power, it is also necessary to consider higher requirements for the electrical connection and larger diameter refrigerant lines, which we will elaborate on in the installation section.

Energy efficiency - SEER, SCOP and real operating costs

When comparing SINCLAIR models according to their power, it is also important not to overlook the energy class and seasonal efficiency coefficients - SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) for cooling and SCOP (Seasonal Coefficient of Performance) for heating mode. Inverter models with the suffix AIN usually achieve an energy class of A++ or A+++, which in practice means lower electricity consumption for the same cooling or heating power compared to older on/off units.

A practical example from regular operation: an inverter unit with a power of 3.5 kW consumes approximately 20-30% less electricity during an average summer operation of 6 hours per day over 4 months of the year at a SEER value of around 6.5 compared to a comparable on/off unit from an older generation. At an electricity price of around 0.20 - 0.25 € per kWh, this difference becomes noticeable in energy bills over several seasons, especially if the air conditioning is also used for heating during transitional months (spring, autumn), which we discuss in more detail in the article "Air conditioning in heating mode - what to pay attention to."

Unit construction - what lies inside

The wall-mounted split air conditioning system SINCLAIR always consists of two connected parts - an indoor unit located in the room and an outdoor unit (compressor and condenser part) mounted on the facade, balcony or roof. Both parts are connected by refrigerant piping (copper tubes for the gaseous and liquid phase of the refrigerant), a condensate drain and an electrical cable for communication and power supply.

Split air conditioning diagram Indoor unit - heat exchanger - fan, filter refrigerant, condensate, cable Outdoor unit - compressor - condenser, fan condensate drain exhaust air (heat/cooling according to mode)

The indoor unit contains an evaporator (in cooling mode), a fan with multiple speed settings, a filtration system (mechanical dust filter, and in higher models also an antibacterial or PM2.5 filter), and control electronics including a receiver for the signal from the remote control, or a WiFi module. The outdoor unit carries the compressor - the heart of the entire system, which compresses the refrigerant and enables heat exchange between the indoor and outdoor environment. The quality and reliability of the compressor is one of the main factors that determine the long-term lifespan of the air conditioning system, and SINCLAIR relies on proven compressors from reputable suppliers for most of its ranges.

Distance between units and its impact on model selection

When comparing models according to their power, it is also necessary to take into account the maximum allowed length of the refrigerant piping between the indoor and outdoor unit and the maximum height difference. In general, the maximum acceptable length of the route increases with the power of the unit - while with the 9k model we usually stay within the range of 15-20 m, with the 24k and 28k models the manufacturer allows longer routes, which is advantageous in more complex layouts where the outdoor unit cannot be placed directly below or next to the indoor unit. For details and recommendations, see the article "How far can the outdoor unit be from the indoor unit."

Procedure for selecting the right model - practical guide

During daily customer advisory, we recommend following a simple algorithm that takes into account the area of the room, its orientation, the number of people and the purpose of the space.

1. Measure the area and height of the room 2. Take into account window orientation and glazing 3. Add thermal load (people, equipment) 4. Choose the power class (09/13/18/24/28) 5. Choose a specific model according to the equipment (PT, AIN) 6. Plan the pipe route and installation

In practice, it is advisable to slightly overdimension the capacity rather than risk undercooling the room - for larger south- or west-facing windows, where solar load is high during summer months, we recommend adding a 10-15 % performance reserve to the basic calculation. On the other hand, significant overdimensioning (e.g., installing a 24k model in a room with an area of 20 m²) is not suitable - the unit will cool the space too quickly and then cycle, which reduces comfort and the lifespan of the compressor.

Experience from installation practice

Based on realizations we monitor through service interventions and feedback from installation partners, several patterns of behavior of individual performance classes have repeatedly been confirmed. Smaller models such as 09k are most commonly installed in bedrooms of panel or brick new buildings, where emphasis is placed primarily on quiet operation during the night - that is why it is worth considering the version with WiFi and a silent night mode for this class.

The mid-range 13k class is clearly the most frequent choice for installations in living rooms of three-room apartments, where the space is not connected to the kitchen. In open layouts, which are becoming increasingly common in the renovation of older apartments (removing the wall between the kitchen and the living room), the reality shows that the originally planned 13k capacity often proves insufficient, and it is necessary to go directly for 18k or 24k, as the combined space has a significantly higher volume and thermal load from kitchen appliances.

In commercial spaces - small offices, clinics, shops - it has proven effective to combine one more powerful unit (24k or 28k) with a well-designed air distribution system, rather than using multiple smaller units, which reduces the number of outdoor units on the façade and simplifies maintenance.

Self-installation or via service

Regardless of which model from the compared range the customer chooses, the installation of the refrigerant circuit (vacuuming, pressure test, refrigerant charging) must be carried out by an officially certified technician - this is a legal requirement related to handling fluorinated greenhouse gases. A detailed analysis of what the customer can do themselves (e.g., route preparation, mounting work) and what must be carried out by a service company can be found in the article "Wall-mounted air conditioner installation: DIY or via service."

Maintenance during the season and prevention of faults

Regardless of the performance class, regular filter cleaning (recommended interval 2-4 weeks during intensive summer operation) and an annual service check of the outdoor unit significantly extend the lifespan of the device and maintain the declared performance and energy efficiency. A dirty filter or a contaminated heat exchanger in the outdoor unit can reduce the actual cooling capacity by 15-20 %, which in practice means that even a properly dimensioned 13k unit in a dirty condition may not be able to sufficiently cool the room for which it was originally designed. More on this topic in the article "Maintenance and cleaning of wall-mounted air conditioners during the season," or when solving specific problems in the article "Common faults of wall-mounted air conditioners and their solutions."

Common questions about comparing SINCLAIR models

What is the difference between ASH-13AK and ASH-24AIN PT besides performance?

Aside from almost double the cooling capacity, the models also differ in the type of regulation and equipment. The model with the suffix AIN has continuous inverter regulation of the compressor and usually also a WiFi module (in the PT version), while the model AK may have a simpler regulation. Therefore, when choosing, do not judge only by the number, but also by the full alphanumeric designation.

Can I install a more powerful model if I am not sure about the exact calculations?

Mild overdimensioning by one performance class is not a major problem, especially in rooms with high solar load. Significant overdimensioning (e.g., by two or more classes) leads to frequent compressor cycling, lower comfort in humidity and temperature regulation, and unnecessarily higher purchase cost.

Can one outdoor model 28k serve multiple rooms simultaneously?

Models in the ASH range are designed as simple split systems (one indoor - one outdoor unit). If you need to air condition multiple separate rooms with one outdoor compressor, a multi-split solution with multiple indoor units connected to one outdoor unit with a higher capacity is required - this is, however, a different product category.

Does the performance class affect heating options in winter?

Yes, most SINCLAIR ASH models are equipped with an air-to-air heat pump, so they can also operate in heating mode. The heating capacity is generally slightly higher than the cooling capacity for the same performance class, but efficiency decreases with decreasing outdoor temperature. For lower models (09k, 13k), the heating effect is more suitable as a supplementary heat source during transitional periods.

Is there a difference in noise levels between different performance classes?

Generally, more powerful models have higher maximum noise levels at full capacity, but inverter units (AIN) can maintain low speeds in normal operation, significantly reducing noise, especially in night mode. Therefore, when choosing for a bedroom, prefer an inverter model with a silent night mode regardless of the performance class.

Is it worth investing in a higher performance class with a reserve for the future?

If you plan future construction changes that will increase the space (e.g., removing a wall), it is advisable to consider a slight performance reserve. However, for a stable layout without planned changes, it is more efficient to choose a precisely dimensioned model that will operate in the optimal operating point with the best efficiency.

Conclusion

Comparing SINCLAIR air conditioners by range and performance shows that navigating the range is not complicated if you understand the naming logic - the number after the abbreviation ASH indicates the performance class in hundreds of BTU/h, and the letter suffixes then specify the type of regulation (AIN for inverter) and additional equipment (PT for WiFi and an extended filter). From the smallest model SINCLAIR ASH-09AIN PT intended for bedrooms and smaller rooms, through the universal SINCLAIR ASH-13AK for standard living rooms, to the powerful models SINCLAIR ASH-24AIN PT and SINCLAIR ASH-28AC for open layouts and commercial spaces, the ASH range offers a solution for almost every type of space.

When making the final selection, we recommend combining the knowledge from this comparison with an accurate calculation based on the area and room orientation, considering the requirements for quiet operation or intelligent control, and not forgetting to properly plan the route between the indoor and outdoor units before placing the order. The complete range of wall-mounted air conditioners, including all the models mentioned, can be found in the category wall-mounted air conditioners, where individual models can be directly compared according to technical parameters.
