At first glance, a seemingly minor issue – a few drops per minute – can cause significant damage over the course of a year: water is wasted unnecessarily, water scale and corrosion appear on the faucet, and the sink surface suffers from permanent stains. With faucets of the brand Stern, these are mostly solvable problems that you can handle yourself or with minimal help from a plumber. This article will explain in detail why your faucet is dripping or leaking, where exactly to look for the cause and how to eliminate it – step by step, without unnecessary generalizations.

Why does a faucet start dripping or leaking in the first place?

Every water faucet is a mechanical device exposed to daily stress – temperature fluctuations, water pressure variations, water scale deposition and chemical effects of disinfectants. No faucet lasts forever, but premature problems always have a specific cause. In practice, we encounter several basic scenarios.

Worn seals or cartridge – this is by far the most common reason. Rubber O-rings and seals age, harden, crack or deform. In a single-lever faucet, the ceramic cartridge serves as a seal, whose plates gradually swell or crack due to water scale. In a two-handle faucet with classic valve inserts, the rubber seat seals wear out.

Loose connection or connecting seals – the faucet can leak not from the outlet, but from the point of connection to the water supply. This is a special problem that manifests differently than dripping from the spout and requires a different repair procedure.

Water scale and deposits – in areas with hard water (which is common in many parts of Slovakia, with hardness even above 30 °dH), water scale settles inside the cartridge, on the sealing seats and in the outlet heads. The result is first a reduced flow, then a leak.

Mechanical damage – a fall, impact or overly strong closing of the lever can damage the cartridge or the body of the faucet. Cracks in the body of the faucet are less common, but they do occur.

Inappropriate water pressure – Stern faucets, like most bathroom faucets, are designed for a pressure of 1–5 bar. If the pressure is higher (which can happen, for example, in new buildings or after replacing pressure tanks), the seals age faster and the faucet starts dripping sooner than you would expect.

Diagnosis: where exactly is it leaking?

Before you reach for the wrenches, it is crucial to identify exactly where the source of the problem is. This is not a trivial step – the location determines what tools you will need and what procedure you will follow.

Dripping from the outlet arm or spout (faucet closed)

If the faucet is dripping from the spout even when turned off, the problem is almost always in the sealing part inside – that is, in the cartridge (for single-lever faucets) or in the seat seal (for two-handle faucets). This is the most classic case we encounter in practice. Even seemingly small dripping – say one drop every five seconds – represents about 6–8 liters of water per day, which is over 2,500 liters per year.

Leaking around the lever or valve

If water is leaking around the base of the lever or around the valve (that is, not from the spout, but from the side, when turning), the problem is in the O-rings on the cartridge body or in the fixing mechanism. In older two-handle faucets, it is often the O-rings on the valve stem.

Leaking from under the faucet or from the connecting hoses

If water is dripping from below, from the point of connection of the hoses, the cause is worn or improperly sealed connecting seals. This should not be confused with dripping from the spout – the repair procedure is different and usually simpler.

Leaking from the outlet arm when the shower is turned on (in combinations)

In faucets with a shower/bathtub switch (bathtub faucets), it occasionally happens that water leaks simultaneously from the outlet arm and the shower. The cause is a worn switch or switch seal – not the cartridge itself.

Single-lever Stern faucet: dripping and cartridge replacement

Most modern Stern faucets are equipped with ceramic cartridges. Ceramic plates are more durable than rubber, but they are not indestructible – water scale and abrasive particles from the water gradually damage them. The typical lifespan of a quality ceramic cartridge is 10–15 years under normal operation, but it can be shorter in areas with hard water or high pressure.

Replacing the cartridge in a single-lever Stern faucet is a relatively straightforward task that a skilled DIY enthusiast can handle. Before replacing the cartridge, it is important to know its diameter and height – these parameters determine whether the replacement cartridge is compatible. The most common diameters we encounter are 35 mm and 40 mm, with Stern faucets mostly using 35 mm cartridges. If you are unsure, you can determine the diameter only after removing the cartridge from the faucet body (after stopping the water at the shut-off valves under the sink).

Step-by-step cartridge replacement (summary)

  • Close the cold and hot water shut-off valves under the sink (angle valves).
  • Open the faucet to release the remaining water pressure and drain it.
  • Remove the decorative cap on the handle (usually it can be pulled off or unscrewed with a small screw).
  • Unscrew the mounting screw under the cap and then the cartridge nut (usually 24–27 mm wrench).
  • Pull the old cartridge straight up – do not turn it, just lift it straight up.
  • Inspect the faucet body and clean it of lime scale and deposits.
  • Insert the new cartridge into the correct position (the protrusions on the cartridge must fit into the grooves).
  • Screw the nut back on, mount the handle and cover, open the shut-off valves – check for leaks.

Stern two-handle faucet: replacing the seat washer

Older and some design two-handle Stern faucets operate using a rubber seat washer that is screwed or pressed onto the seat (a metal or plastic base inside the faucet body). When the rubber ages, hardens or is mechanically damaged, it no longer seals properly and water starts to leak even when the faucet is closed.

Unlike a ceramic cartridge, replacing the seat washer is even simpler and cheaper – the rubber washer costs practically nothing. The problem is more often that the original seat (the metal base in the faucet body) is cracked or eroded, which no new washer can fix. In such a case, you either need to replace the entire faucet insert (so-called faucet cartridge), or proceed to replace the entire faucet.

Distinguishing between the washer and the seat is simple in practice: if a new rubber washer does not solve the problem even after proper tightening, the seat is likely damaged. Experienced plumbers sometimes use a tool for grinding the seat (called a seat dresser), but for cost-effective faucets it is not economically justified.

Leakage from connection points – how to fix it

If water is leaking from the place where the supply hoses connect to the faucet or to the angle valves, the solution is usually simple: replace the sealing washer (a flat rubber washer in the hose coupling) or use PTFE sealing tape (Teflon). The rule of thumb in practice is this: if it leaks from the hose on the faucet side, the problem is the sealing washer under the hose nut at the faucet inlet. If it leaks from the connection between the hose and the angle valve, the sealing washer is there.

Important: with copper or steel piping, we often encounter corrosion or lime scale on the threads, which prevents proper sealing. In such a case, it is necessary to clean the threads, or even replace the angle valve.

Lime scale as a cause of dripping – an underestimated problem

In areas with water hardness above 20 °dH (which is a large part of Slovakia – for example, Bratislava typically has 15–25 °dH, and many areas in central and eastern Slovakia even more), lime scale is one of the main causes of faucet problems. Limescale deposits can:

  • block the movable ceramic plates of the cartridge and prevent them from closing completely,
  • form a thick layer on rubber seals, which paradoxically prevents them from seating properly,
  • clog the aerator (the mesh on the spout), which does not cause dripping but reduces flow and creates an uneven water stream,
  • corrode metal surfaces in the faucet body, permanently damaging the sealing surface.

Before replacing the cartridge or the washer, we always recommend thorough descaling. In short: aerators and parts that can be soaked are left in a vinegar or citric acid solution (5–10% solution), and the inside of the faucet body is cleaned with a soft cloth or sponge.

Important practical note: if the faucet still drips after descaling and replacing the cartridge, the problem is in the faucet body – the eroded or corroded seat. This is usually not repairable and the entire faucet must be replaced.

Water pressure and its influence on dripping

The optimal operating pressure for most Stern faucets is 1 to 5 bar. If the pressure is too low (under 1 bar), there may be insufficient flow, but the faucet usually does not drip. The problem arises when the pressure is too high – over 5–6 bar.

How can you find out if the pressure is normal? The simplest way is to use a pressure gauge (pressure gauge ball), which you connect to a tap in the house. Ideally, the pressure should be 3–4 bar. If it is higher, have a plumber adjust or replace the pressure regulator (pressure reducer) at the main inlet. After installing a regulator set to 3 bar, the faucet functioned without problems for another 10 years.

When to repair and when to replace a faucet?

This is a question every customer asks. The answer depends on several factors:

Repair the faucet if:

  • The faucet is less than 5–7 years old and it is the first failure.
  • The cause is clear and repairable – worn cartridge, O-ring, connecting gasket.
  • Replacement parts are available and their cost is significantly lower than a new faucet.

Consider replacing the faucet if:

  • The faucet is older than 10–15 years and the seals need to be replaced repeatedly every 1–2 years.
  • The body of the faucet is corroded, cracked or the surface is permanently damaged.

  • The faucet is from a cheap range with no available spare parts.
  • You want to modernize during the repair – for example, switching from a two-handle to a single-lever faucet.

Dripping during warranty period – what are your rights

Stern faucets sold on the Slovak market are subject to a legal warranty of 24 months (for consumers). If the faucet starts dripping during the warranty period and the failure is not caused by incorrect installation or mechanical damage by the customer, you have the right to free repair or replacement. It is important to keep the purchase receipt and, in the case of a warranty claim, do not modify the faucet yourself – this could invalidate the warranty.

In practice, we have encountered cases where the customer replaced the cartridge themselves and then requested a warranty repair for something else – the seller had justified doubts about the original condition. Therefore: if you are still within the warranty period and you are unsure of the cause, it is better to contact the seller or an authorized service.

Prevention: how to avoid dripping

Careful maintenance of the faucet is the best prevention. From practice, it follows that faucets that are regularly maintained last 2–3 times longer than neglected ones of the same type:

  • Regular descaling of the aerator – at least twice a year, ideally every 3 months in hard water. A clogged aerator causes increased pressure behind it, which puts strain on the cartridge.
  • Do not use aggressive cleaning agents – acidic gels and limescale removers on the surface of the faucet are fine, but they must not get inside. Wipe the surface of the faucet with a soft, damp cloth.
  • Do not force the faucet – if the faucet is stiff (a sign of limescale buildup in the cartridge), do not try to force it open. Rather, address the cause – descaling or replacing the cartridge.
  • Check the water pressure – occasionally measuring the pressure is worth it. A pressure reducer is an inexpensive safeguard that protects all your faucets and appliances.
  • Close the stop valves when away for a long time – prolonged static pressure on a closed faucet unnecessarily strains the seals.

Typical scenarios from practice

Scenario 1 – New building, dripping after 18 months: The customer had a new bathroom with Stern faucets, dripping started very quickly. Cause: water pressure of 7.5 bar without a pressure reducer. Solution: installation of a pressure reducer to 3.5 bar + replacement of cartridges. Since then, trouble-free operation.

Scenario 2 – Older two-handle faucet, dripping from the hot water tap: The customer wanted to replace the entire faucet. After inspection, we found that it was a classic case of worn seating gasket. Replacing the rubber gasket for €0.50 completely solved the problem – the faucet continues to function.

Scenario 3 – Leak under the sink after installation: After replacing the faucet by themselves, the customer noticed a wet spot under the sink. Cause: the connecting hoses were tightened with a dry thread without Teflon tape and without a sealing washer. A simple sealing solved the problem. Replacing a cartridge is essentially a simple task that a handy DIYer with basic tools (spanner, screwdriver) can manage. The key is to properly shut off the water supply before starting the work and to use the correct replacement cartridge (correct diameter and type). If you are unsure or if the dripping continues after replacing the cartridge, it is wiser to call a plumber – you will save time and avoid damaging the faucet with an unsuitable tool.

How long should a Stern faucet cartridge last?

A high-quality ceramic cartridge with appropriate water pressure (up to 3 bar) and regular cleaning of the aerator can last 10–15 years. With higher pressure or hard water (above 25 °dH) without softening, the lifespan may be shorter – 5–8 years. My faucet drips only when hot water is used – what does that mean?
