The choice is not as straightforward as it might seem. Inside or outside the faucet body, an infrared (IR) sensor is placed, which continuously emits beams into the space in front of the outlet. As soon as they are removed, the valve closes.

The range of the IR sensor is given in centimeters and usually ranges between 15 and 35 cm. For a standard sink, an optimal range is 18–25 cm. A shorter range (15 cm) can cause the faucet not to respond when hands are not close enough; a longer range (over 30 cm) can lead to false activations – the faucet turns on when someone just walks past the sink.
The sensitivity of the sensor can be adjusted on some models using a trimmer inside the faucet. 3. Temperature regulation
Most touchless faucets in the mid-price range have a small manual valve – a rotating head or ring – on the body with which you set the ratio of cold and hot water once and for all (or whenever your needs change). The sensor then simply opens and closes the flow at this adjustable temperature. This solution is practical and reliable, but it requires you to pre-set the temperature before washing.
Thermostatic sensor faucets (top price category) have digital control and will remember your preferred temperature. Some models even display the current water temperature on a small LED screen. - Connection spacing: Most faucets have cold and hot water connections spaced 100–150 mm apart in the standard G1/2". Some models have both connections close together (so-called single-hole for combined supply). Compare with your existing plumbing.

Can a touchless faucet turn on water by itself without a hand being there?
Yes, this can happen with cheaper models – these are so-called false activations. The cause is a too sensitive or improperly adjusted sensor that reacts to the shiny surface of the sink, movement of objects nearby, or sunlight coming through the window. Higher quality models have impulse filtering and adjustable range – these problems are practically eliminated. How long will a battery-powered faucet last?
It depends on the frequency of use and the quality of the installed batteries. In a typical home bathroom with two adults and the faucet being opened on average 20 times a day, alkaline AA batteries from a branded manufacturer (Duracell, Energizer) will last 1.5–2.5 years. With cheap no-name batteries, the lifespan drops to 6–12 months and in addition, the sensor may start reacting slowly or irregularly even before the batteries are completely drained. Is a touchless faucet worth the money financially?
