Limescale, corrosion, damaged seals, and clogged filters are the four main factors you need to actively combat.

Limescale: the number one enemy – how to remove it properly
Limescale (chemically calcium carbonate, CaCO₃) settles wherever hard water comes into contact with a surface and where evaporation or temperature changes occur. On taps, you will first notice it on the outlet filter (aerator), around the base of the tap body, around the lever or knob, and on the spout. If the deposits are only surface-level and fresh (a white-gray coating), their removal is very simple. Problems arise when limescale accumulates over several months or years due to neglect – it becomes hard and compact, and improper removal can mechanically damage the tap surface.
Cleaning the aerator – the most important step
The aerator (a filter with an air vent at the end of the spout) is the place where limescale accumulates most intensely and where it has the fastest negative effect – it reduces water flow, disrupts the water stream, and can cause the tap to "sputter" instead of producing a smooth flow. Therefore, the aerator should be the first point of regular maintenance.
Unscrew the aerator by hand or with a flat wrench wrapped in a protective cloth (to avoid scratching the chrome surface). After unscrewing, disassemble it into individual parts – the mesh, plastic distributor, and rubber sealing washer – and soak each part in an 8–10% vinegar solution (or a limescale remover, e.g., Bref Power or a similar product). Let it soak for 30–60 minutes. For stronger deposits, you can slightly warm the solution to 40–50 °C, which accelerates the chemical reaction. After soaking, rinse under running water and gently scrub the mesh with a soft brush (a toothbrush works well) until it is clean. Cleaning the spout and tap body
Clean the tap body regularly with a damp cloth and a neutral cleaning agent – no abrasive powders, no wire brushes, and no acidic cleaners directly on the chrome surface. The same applies to black matte or gold finishes, and even more so – these surfaces are more sensitive to aggressive chemicals. For deposits directly on the surface of the tap body, use vinegar applied with a cloth (not directly on the tap) or a special limescale remover in gel form – this has the advantage of not running off and staying in contact with the deposit for a longer time. Let it work for a maximum of 5–10 minutes and then rinse. Never let acid sit on the surface of a chrome tap for a long time – it can damage the polished layer.
Cleaning and lubrication of cartridge and moving parts
The cartridge is the heart of every valve. It contains ceramic or plastic discs that regulate water flow and temperature. Viking valves and single-lever models work with different types of cartridges – usually ceramic ones, which are more durable than the rubber seals of older generations. Despite this, they are not indestructible.
Ceramic cartridges do not require internal lubrication – that would be counterproductive. What they do need is cleanliness and proper water pressure. If you start to notice that the valve handle moves more stiffly or, on the contrary, you feel that it has lost resistance and "creeps" without control, it indicates either deposits on the ceramic discs or their wear. Lubrication of external moving parts
The valve handle, the pivot joint of the arm (if it is a model with a swivel arm), the folding valves of the shower head, or the shower valve switch – all of these are places where it is worth applying a thin layer of silicone lubricant once a year. I emphasize: silicone-based, not petroleum, not WD-40 (which is used for degreasing and corrosion protection, not for long-term lubrication of plastics and rubber), not regular machine oil. Silicone lubricant is chemically inert to rubber seals and plastics, which is crucial for valves.
The procedure is simple: using a soft brush or a cotton swab, apply a small amount of silicone gel (e.g., Molykote 111 or a cheaper alternative in the form of silicone spray) to the joints, lever axes and moving parts. Wipe off the excess with a cloth. This procedure significantly reduces wear on the moving mechanisms and prolongs the smooth operation of the valve.
Inspection and replacement of seals – preventive maintenance, not emergency repair
One of the most common mistakes I see in customer orders is that customers only address a leaking valve when it is "leaking so much that you can hear it throughout the house." Meanwhile, the first faint dripping is a sign that the seal is beginning to degrade – and it is precisely at this moment that replacement is the cheapest and easiest. The longer you wait, the more damage limescale can cause to the valve seats and sealing surfaces.
Viking valves mostly use O-rings made of EPDM or NBR rubber. EPDM is more resistant to temperature (it can withstand 130 °C) and chemicals, while NBR is better for oil resistance – which is irrelevant for domestic valves, so EPDM seals are the preferred choice. The average lifespan of seals under normal use is 5–8 years, and it can be reduced to 3–4 years in hard water conditions.

Cleaning the shower hose and head of a Viking shower valve

The simplest way to clean it: fill a large bowl or bucket with a 10% vinegar solution, submerge the shower and let it soak for 30–60 minutes, then clean each nozzle with your finger or a soft cloth. If the shower head has silicone nozzles (which is now a common standard), simply run your finger over them and the deposits will physically come off – regular rubber is not sufficient. Therefore, modern silicone nozzles are a significant prevention against clogging.
To clean the inside of the shower hose, disconnect both ends (from the valve and from the shower), flush it with vinegar solution and let it stand for 20–30 minutes. It is recommended to replace the shower hose every 5–7 years regardless of its visual condition, because aging rubber can cause contamination of drinking water with bacterial films (biofilm).
Protection of the valve against corrosion and mechanical damage
Corrosion is a topic with bathroom valves that manifests itself gradually and subtly. It usually starts at places where the surface finish is damaged – scratches from abrasive cleaners, impacts, or at places where different metal parts are joined (galvanic corrosion, if different metals are used without adequate insulation).
Prevention is simple: never use abrasive cleaning agents, steel wool or wire brushes on the surface of the valve. If the valve has fallen or you have accidentally scratched it, cover the damaged area with clear nail polish or a special chrome fix – this will stop further oxidation. For valves with a black matte finish (PVD or powder coating), once the layer is damaged, it is difficult to repair, so prevention is even more important.
Galvanic corrosion typically occurs at improper connections – for example, when brass supply lines are directly connected to a steel threaded fitting without a dielectric insert. In practice, this manifests as greenish or white deposits around the connections and loosening of the threads. The solution is to check the condition of the Teflon tape or hemp sealing at each disassembly and to replenish it with new material.
Hard water and softening – a system solution for the longevity of taps
All the above-described cleaning procedures are reactive – you are fighting the problem after it has already occurred. A real system solution for extending the lifespan of not only taps, but the entire plumbing system, is water softening. Installing a home water softener (ion exchange system) can reduce water hardness from typical 30–40 °dH to the recommended 8–12 °dH. In addition to taps, it will extend the life of your water heater, washing machine, dishwasher, and shower panels – which quickly pays off when considering total costs.
If you do not want to invest in a full water softener, at least consider installing a filter insert with activated carbon and a mechanical pre-filter directly on the water supply to the tap. These compact filters cost 20–60 € and are replaced once a year – they drastically reduce the amount of sediment right at the point of use.
Checking the connection and tightness – once a year is enough, but it really is enough
Many people think that once a tap is installed, it is a "finished product." In practice, this is not the case. Flexible supply lines (flexi-hoses), which connect the tap to the angle valves or directly to the distribution system, are made of stainless steel braiding with an inner rubber lining. This rubber ages, dries out, and cracks – and it is precisely from this that the "mysterious" moisture under the sink or at the bottom of the kitchen cabinet, which customers discover only after a musty smell appears, originates in 70% of cases.
Once a year, take a flashlight, lie under the sink or open the doors of the kitchen cabinet under the countertop, and carefully inspect both flexible supply lines – visually and by touch. Look for: moisture, swollen braiding, white deposits (limescale from a leak), discoloration, or a smelly film on the rubber. The supply lines are cheap (3–10 € each), and their replacement takes 10 minutes, but it prevents a water leak that could damage the wooden cabinet, the floor, or even the ceiling of the neighbors in panel buildings within a few months.
At the same time, check the tightness of the tap mounting nut to the sink/mounting plate – it can loosen over time, causing the tap to move and gradually damaging the silicone seal at the base. If the tap moves, water can penetrate under the base and cause corrosion damage to the cabinet backing.
Preventive maintenance plan: what, when, and how
To have a clear structure, here is an overview of the recommended Viking tap maintenance schedule:
- Every month: Visual inspection of the surface (no coatings, no visible corrosion), wiping the surface with a damp cloth and neutral detergent.

What to do if the tap shows the first signs of malfunction
Dripping from the outlet after closing: most often a worn cartridge or a clogged seat. Water dripping around the lever: damaged O-ring on the lever axis, usually a simple replacement within 15 minutes.
The tap "runs" cold water even when set to hot: the cartridge is stuck or the ceramic inside is damaged. Checking and replacing the cartridge is the first step.

Alternatively, you can buy an inexpensive test strip (1–5 €) at pharmacies or garden stores. Values above 14 °dH are considered hard water, 8–14 °dH is medium hardness, and below 8 °dH is soft water. In practice, most Slovak cities have water hardness between 15–35 °dH, which places most households in the "hard water" category – justifying more frequent maintenance of aerators and cartridges.
Can I replace the cartridges and seals myself, or should I call a plumber?
In the vast majority of cases, yes – self-replacement of a cartridge or O-rings is feasible for any handy home handyman. You will need: a shut-off valve (corner valve before the tap), a basic set of wrenches, a screwdriver, and new replacement parts. Dullness of a chrome surface after years of use is a normal phenomenon caused by micro-scratches and deposits embedded in the surface. In many cases, polishing with a special chrome cleaner (e.g., Autosol or special bathroom polish) applied to a soft cloth and polished in circular motions can help. If the surface is deeply damaged (corrosion pits, peeling surface layer), polishing will not help and it is more appropriate to replace the tap – this is usually also the more economically rational choice than attempting to restore it. I do not recommend polishing at all for PVD black or gold surfaces – it can further damage the surface.
Is it necessary to prepare the tap in any way for a longer absence (e.g., vacation)?
If you are leaving for more than 2–3 weeks, I recommend closing the main water supply to the apartment or at least the corner valves under the taps. Eliminating water pressure in the tap components prevents possible bursting of flexible hoses or seals during your absence. After returning, let the water run for a minute or two to flush the pipes and taps from any possible biofilm that may have formed in the stagnant water. This is especially important for thermostatic taps with accumulated hot water inside.
