Water hardness is measured in degrees dH (German hardness degrees) or in mmol/l. For practical purposes:
- 0 – 7 °dH – soft water, scale forms almost not at all

- White vinegar (acetic acid 5 – 8 %) – basic, safe and cheap limescale remover suitable for chrome, brass and plastic. Available in every grocery store.
- Citric acid – powder or solution (15 – 20 g in 200 ml of water). Slightly more aggressive than vinegar, but still safe for most surfaces. Works very well on hardened deposits.
- Commercial limescale remover – e.g. Dr. Beckmann, Cillit Bang Kalk & Schmutz or similar. Contain sulfuric or lactic acid, effective but must be used carefully (watch out for chrome surfaces – always follow the manufacturer's instructions).

- Unscrew the aerator. Some can be unscrewed by hand (especially plastic ones), others require an aerator key (a square-notch wrench included with the tap) or adjustable pliers. Use protective tape or a cloth to avoid scratching the surface.

Dampen a microfiber cloth with white vinegar and apply it to the stained areas. Let it sit for 15–30 minutes. For hard-to-reach areas around the base of the tap or behind the lever, use a cotton swab or an old toothbrush. After the vinegar has acted, gently wipe the surface with a damp cloth and thoroughly dry with a dry microfiber.
Special surfaces – gold, black, gunmetal PVD: These surfaces are much more sensitive. Do not use citric acid or commercial limescale removers without explicit approval from the manufacturer. Diluted white vinegar is usually safe, but reduce the contact time to 5–10 minutes and rinse immediately. Always test on an inconspicuous area first.
Practical tip: If limescale has settled in the gap between the tap and the sink or bathtub, use a plastic bag filled with vinegar and attached with a rubber band or tape. The rubber nozzles of modern shower heads are designed so that scale can be removed by simply brushing with a finger – the crystals break off. The push or rotating switch of a bathtub tap is another typical location. If the switch sticks or remains jammed, water scale has penetrated under the gasket. Removing limescale is one thing, its prevention is much more pleasant. A few proven tips:
- Wipe the surface dry with a microfiber cloth after each use of the faucet. It takes 5 seconds and the scale has no chance to harden, because the water on the surface does not dry.
- Regularly apply chrome polish (e.g. Plex, Autosol Chrome). It creates a protective layer that makes it harder for the scale to stick. Repeat every 1 – 2 months.

This is a fairly common situation in old apartments where the faucet has not been maintained for 5 – 10 years. The scale and corrosion of the aerator thread have fused it to the outlet so tightly that it cannot be moved with a standard wrench. Can I use Cillit Bang directly on a chrome faucet?
Yes, but carefully and briefly – maximum 1 – 2 minutes and immediately rinse with clean water. Cillit Bang contains lactic and hydrochloric acid, which are aggressive to chrome and nickel surfaces after prolonged exposure. How long should I soak the aerator in vinegar?
For normal buildup, 30 minutes to 1 hour is sufficient. For very thick scale (the aerator is completely white and the mesh is clogged), I recommend soaking overnight, i.e. 8 – 12 hours. In such a case, the water hardness in your household is likely very high (over 20 °dH).
