How the cartridge and seal work in a lever faucet
In order to understand what you are actually replacing and why it works, it is necessary to know at least the basic construction of the faucet. Modern lever faucets – that is, most models from the Balletto range – work on the principle of a ceramic cartridge. These are two ceramic discs (wafers) that slide over each other. One disc is fixed, the other is movable and is controlled by the lever. When you turn the lever to the side or lift it, the movable disc uncovers holes in the fixed disc and cold or hot water, or their mixture, flows through them.
Ceramic is an extremely hard material and these types of cartridges usually last 500,000 cycles of opening and closing – that is 10 to 15 years of normal use. Despite this, they do wear out: water scale, sand or impurities from the pipes get embedded in the ceramic, the discs may microscopically wear or crack. The result is always the same – the faucet drips from the outlet in the closed position or the lever is stiff and jerky.
In addition to the cartridge, there are also other seals in the faucet: O-rings on the body of the faucet, which seal the areas where the cartridge sits in the body, and the seal on the outlet (aerator). These rubber rings age, harden and crack – especially if the water is hot or contains chlorine. Dripping from under the lever (not from the outlet) or from the base of the faucet near the wall is a typical sign of damaged O-rings on the body.
What you need before starting the repair
Good preparation is half the success. Gather your tools and materials before you disassemble anything – nothing is more unpleasant than a disassembled faucet on the table and the realization that you need to run to the store.
Tools
- Flat screwdriver (small, for removing decorative covers)
- Phillips screwdriver (PH2)
- Hex key set – sizes 3 mm, 4 mm, 5 mm (most commonly 4 mm for the lever fixing screw)
- Adjustable wrench or pliers with fine jaws (for the retaining ring/washer of the cartridge)
- Rubber mallet or wooden mallet (for gently pushing out the cartridge, if it is firmly seated)
- Plastic bowl or towel under the faucet
- Ceramic lubricant – vaseline or special silicone paste (not WD-40!)
Replacement parts
This is the most important step before the actual repair: finding out what type and dimensions of cartridge or seal you need. Cartridges differ by diameter (most commonly 25 mm, 35 mm or 40 mm for standard levers) and height. Before visiting a store or ordering online, measure the old cartridge or take a photo of its marking on the side – the manufacturer usually engraves it there.
For O-rings, buy a set of different sizes (so-called assortment kit) – they cost a few euros and cover all common diameters. The aerator seal is standardized and can be bought in any hardware store.
Stopping the water – the first and most important step
Before you touch any screw, you must turn off the water supply. For most basin and kitchen faucets, there are corner valves under the basin or in the cabinet under the sink – small ball or stem valves that you turn with a screwdriver or by hand. Turn both (cold and hot water) to the position ON→OFF, which is usually 90° perpendicular to the pipe.
If there are no corner valves (older installations) or they are not working (corroded, worn), you must close the main shut-off valve for the apartment unit – it is usually on the corridor in the distribution box or next to the water meter. In the worst case (house), the main shut-off valve at the entrance to the building.
After stopping the water, open the faucet fully – this will drain the remaining water from the pipes and reduce the pressure in the system. Place a bowl or towel under the outlet.
Disassembly of the lever and cover – step by step
The procedure may vary depending on the design of the specific faucet, but the principle is the same for the vast majority of lever faucets. The description below applies to standard sink or kitchen levers.
1. Uncovering the mounting screw
On top of the lever is usually a colored disc – blue (cold) or red (hot), or a neutral chrome ring. This disc covers the screw that attaches the lever to the cartridge body. Remove the disc using a thin flathead screwdriver or a long fingernail – no great force is needed, as it is just a cap pressed into a groove.
Under the disc you will find a screw – either Philips (PH2) or Inbus (most commonly 4 mm). Unscrew it and place it in a safe place. Faucet screws are small and can easily fall into the waste.
2. Removing the lever
After unscrewing the screw, lift the lever upward. Sometimes it is loose and comes off without resistance, at other times you may need to gently shake it side to side while pulling. Never use a sharp object to pry against the chrome surface – scratches will appear and are difficult to conceal. If the lever does not come off, check whether you have fully unscrewed the screw and not just a few threads.
3. Removing the decorative rim (rosette)
After removing the lever, a plastic or metal decorative rim is usually visible, covering the cartridge body and the mounting nut of the faucet. The rim usually turns counterclockwise and unscrews by hand. If it is tightly adhered, you can gently loosen it if needed, but be careful – do not apply pliers directly to the chrome surface without protection (place a piece of tape or cloth underneath).
4. Unscrewing the mounting nut of the cartridge
Now the cartridge is visible, held in place by a plastic or metal hexagonal nut (retaining ring). Its size usually ranges between 22 mm and 32 mm. Unscrew it with a wrench – for most faucets, it can be done by hand, for stuck ones use an adjustable wrench with surface protection.
5. Removing the cartridge
The cartridge usually has small protrusions (pins, lugs) that fit into grooves in the faucet body – this fixes it in the correct position and prevents it from rotating. Before removing it, take a photo of the cartridge orientation (or mark the direction with a marker). Grasp the top end of the cartridge with your thumb and index finger and pull it straight up. If it is stuck, gently move it side to side while pulling – the ceramic must not receive a shock or impact.
If the cartridge still does not come out, you can gently push it from below (through the water inlet opening) with a wooden stick, but this is an extreme case – it does not happen with well-maintained faucets.
Replacing the cartridge itself – what to pay attention to
When you have the old cartridge in hand, compare it with the new one – the dimensions must match: diameter, height, and number and placement of mounting lugs. The most common cartridge diameters for levers are:
- 25 mm – small sink faucets, single-function outlets
- 35 mm – standard sink lever, most kitchen faucets
- 40 mm – more robust shower faucets, bathtub levers
- 48 mm / 50 mm – built-in thermostats and special assemblies
Before installing the new cartridge, clean the seat in the faucet body – wipe away any remaining limescale, old seals, and dirt with a damp cloth. If there is a layer of scale in the seat, gently remove it with a plastic tool or a cloth soaked in vinegar – a steel brush would damage the seating surfaces.
Gently apply silicone grease or vaseline to the seating surfaces and O-rings of the new cartridge – not too much, just a thin layer. Never use WD-40 or mineral oil-based lubricants – these attack the rubber and can destroy the cartridge within a few months.
Insert the cartridge into the seat so that the lugs fit into the grooves – it usually "clicks" or clearly seats. Now it is important that the cartridge is in the correct orientation: the cold water outlet must be on the side of the cold inlet and the hot water outlet on the side of the hot inlet. If you are unsure, check the description on the cartridge body – most manufacturers have markings H (hot) and C (cold) on the lower outlets.
Replacing O-rings and flat gaskets
If the problem was dripping from the rim, from the base of the lever, or from the place where the faucet is mounted on the sink, the cause is most likely the O-rings or flat rubber gaskets in the faucet body. They look like small rubber rings – black or brown. When replacing the cartridge, it is an ideal opportunity to replace all of them at once, even if they appear to be in good condition at first glance – rubber changes and hardens from within, and a new cartridge with worn O-rings will start dripping again later.
Remove the O-rings carefully with a thin spatula or blunt pin – do not allow any scratches from the tool and the groove surface must not be damaged. The new O-ring must have the same cross-sectional diameter (usually 1.5 mm, 2 mm or 2.5 mm) and the same inner diameter. Before fitting, gently apply silicone grease to it, fit it with your fingers (not with a tool, to prevent it from twisting), and check that it lies evenly in the entire groove without folds.

Reassembly of the faucet and first testing
Assembly proceeds exactly in the reverse order of disassembly. Summary:
- Insert the cartridge (check the orientation)
- Mount and tighten the cartridge mounting nut – tighten firmly, but not with brute force; the cartridge is plastic and its thread can be stripped
- Mount the rim and turn it clockwise to a firm position
- Mount the lever on the cartridge stem (check that it fits – the lever must be freely movable in both directions)
- Tighten the mounting screw (Philips or Inbus) – firmly, but carefully
- Mount the colored disc (simply press it into the groove)
Now open the angle valves slowly – not fully and all at once, but gradually, to prevent water hammer in the pipes. Check for any dripping: at the base of the faucet, under the collar, and at the outlet itself. Open and close the faucet several times, move the lever side to side – the movement should be smooth, without grinding or excessive stiffness.
If after the first opening of the water, the water flowing from the outlet is cloudy with pieces of dirt – let it run for a minute or two. This is a common occurrence after any disassembly. If the water remains cloudy for a longer time, check the aerator and the outlet screen – they are likely clogged with sediment that was released from the pipes during the repair.
Repair of a thermostatic faucet – a different principle, a different procedure
Thermostatic faucets operate on a different principle than levers – instead of a ceramic cartridge, they use a thermostatic valve that contains wax (a thermoelement) or a bimetallic element. This element expands at a given temperature, automatically regulating the ratio of hot and cold water to maintain the set temperature even with pressure fluctuations in the system.
With thermostatic faucets, two common faults are typical:
- Imprecise temperature regulation – the thermoelement is worn or clogged with limescale
- Dripping – worn seals on the shut-off valve (volume) or on the connections
Replacing a thermostatic element is more demanding than replacing a lever cartridge, because the element is more sensitive to mechanical damage and must be precisely calibrated. The thermostatic element is removed after unscrewing the control head (usually after turning the locking ring), but always buy a new component from the same manufacturer and in the same series – it is not interchangeable across brands. Replacement of the aerator and outlet screen
The aerator is a small metal insert with a mesh at the end of the faucet outlet. It mixes water with air (so-called aeration effect), creating a soft, full stream without splashing and at the same time saving water. A clogged aerator causes weak or splashing flow, or even a complete stop of the flow.
Replacing the aerator is the simplest repair you can do on a faucet:
- Unscrew the aerator by hand or using a coin (some models have an internal hexagon for a 22–24 mm wrench).
- Disassemble it into parts: outer ring, mesh, plastic insert, rubber seal.
- Wash the mesh in vinegar (30–60 minutes) or replace the entire aerator with a new one.
- Reassemble – tightening by hand is sufficient (metal to metal – firmly, but not forcefully).
The standard thread size for aerators on standard faucets is M22×1 (external thread, i.e., the aerator is screwed from the inside into the outlet) or M24×1 for larger outlets. Common mistakes to avoid
Over the years of working with customers and installations, the same mistakes keep repeating. Here are the most common ones, so you don't have to experience them on your own skin:
- Mixing up the direction of the nut rotation – not all nuts are unscrewed counterclockwise. Some safety rings have a left-hand thread and must be turned clockwise. If the nut won't budge with reasonable force, try the opposite direction.
- Mounting the cartridge in the wrong orientation – the result is reversed flow direction (cold instead of hot), which is the best case; in the worst case, the faucet starts dripping immediately after opening. Always take a photo before disassembling.
- Over-tightening – plastic nut caps on cartridges can break or crack. They are seated by hand and do not need to be tightened further.
- Using WD-40 – WD-40 is not a lubricant, it is a water displacement agent. It has a destructive effect on rubber seals. Only silicone grease or vaseline should be used.
- Forgetting to close the angle valves – it sounds funny, but it happens. Every year at least one customer calls to say that "the faucet was shooting water" right after the start of disassembly.
- Ignoring the condition of the angle valves – if the angle valves are corroded or leak when closed, it is an ideal time to replace them as well. Once the supply lines are removed, access is easier.
When it's no longer worth repairing and it's better to buy a new faucet
There are situations when repair is no longer economically or technically viable:
- The body of the faucet is cracked or leaking – cracks in the zinc alloy casting (Zamak) cannot be repaired in a durable way. The faucet must be replaced.
- The cartridge or replacement parts are not available – older or less common models with non-standard dimensions. The price for an individual cartridge can be disproportionately high.
- The faucet is older than 12–15 years – even after replacing the cartridge, there is a high probability that other faults will soon appear (corrosion of the supply, wear of the outlet arm, loosened mounting on the sink).
- The chrome finish is damaged, peeling or corroding – an aesthetic and hygienic problem; a new faucet is a better investment.

Preventive care after repair
Once the faucet is repaired and working, it is reasonable to do a few things that will extend the life of the new cartridge and seals:
- Install a filter on the supply – if the water in your area is hard (calcium content over 250 mg/l) or if there are old steel pipes, small rust flakes and calcium sediment dramatically shorten the life of cartridges. A simple mesh filter before the angle valves costs just a few euros and protects the cartridge.
- Do not close the faucet with too much force – ceramic is hard, but pressure on the seating surfaces when forcefully closing the handle gradually wears them down. The faucet should be closable with normal finger strength without hammering.
- Clean the aerator every 6–12 months – more frequently in areas with hard water. It is a two-minute job that prevents most problems with weak flow.
- Record the replacement date – it may sound pedantic, but when the faucet starts dripping again after 7 years, you will be grateful for the information on when you last replaced the cartridge.
Most frequently asked questions (FAQ)
How do I find out what diameter of cartridge I need if I have not yet selected one?
The most reliable way is to disassemble the faucet and physically measure the cartridge. If you do not want to do this before purchasing, try to find the model of the faucet in the manufacturer's catalog or on the sales receipt – the compatible part is usually listed there. For faucets without markings or when buying from an unknown source, there is no alternative but to disassemble and measure. Measure the diameter of the cartridge at the widest part of the cylindrical section, excluding protrusions.
Can dripping from the outlet be caused by something other than a worn-out cartridge?
Yes. In addition to a worn-out cartridge, it can also be caused by a damaged shut-off (anti-backflow) valve in the shower fittings or a combination of high pressure in the system and a standard cartridge. If your faucet drips at a pressure above 4–5 bar in the network, it is reasonable to install a pressure regulator on the supply. However, dripping from the outlet in a closed state is in the vast majority of cases caused by the cartridge.
The handle moves smoothly after replacing the cartridge, but the faucet still drips. What to do?
Check whether the new cartridge is correctly oriented (H/C side) and whether the securing nut is tightened sufficiently – a too loose nut allows the cartridge to slightly lift under pressure, causing a leak. If dripping persists after checking both of these, check whether the cartridge is defective from the factory – it happens rarely, but it does happen. In such a case, contact the seller and claim the part.
Can I replace a Balletto cartridge with a cartridge from another manufacturer?
Technically yes, if the dimensions match (diameter, height, arrangement of pins). Ceramic cartridges are largely standardized, and cartridges from Sedal, Kerox or Grohe are interchangeable if the dimensions match. Is repairing a Balletto faucet covered by warranty or will I lose the warranty?
The warranty applies to material and manufacturing defects, not to normal wear and tear (cartridges, seals). Replacing a seal or a cartridge is routine maintenance, which is not covered by warranty either or does not arise.
