Drywall is a forgiving material – it can be easily trimmed, repaired, and sanded. Ceramic tile and masonry are a different category. Here the rule applies: measure twice, cut once, and literally. A ceramic tile will crack at an incorrect cut, the cut edge must be treated, and the entire opening must be dimensioned so that the door frame covers the joints and edges without protruding or leaving visible gaps.

Another essential difference is in the method of anchoring. In drywall, you anchor directly through the frame into the structure – steel profile or wooden stud. In a masonry wall, you need either chemical anchors or mounting foam in combination with mechanical anchoring. In tile, the doors themselves do not "anchor" at all – the frame must be anchored into the base wall and the tiles are laid around the frame.

The third difference is in water tightness and moisture migration. A bathroom is a humid environment, and if you install the doors incorrectly – without silicone, insufficient sealing, or with an unsuitable frame material – in a few years you will find mold and salt efflorescence around the entire opening.

Not every inspection door is suitable for every substrate. Let's summarize what we have available and where it makes sense to use what:

Before any cutting, you must clarify three things: the clear dimension of the opening, the wall thickness and the location of obstacles (pipes, cables, load-bearing elements). Key rule: the size of the inspection doors you see in the catalog (e.g. 500×500 mm) is the outer dimension of the frame, not the clear opening of the doors. The clear opening – that is, what you actually pass your hand or tool through – is smaller, typically by 30 to 60 mm on each side, depending on the frame width. When planning an opening in masonry, the following applies:

  • Opening size in the wall = outer dimension of the frame + tolerance for installation (5–10 mm on each side)
  • For example, for doors 500×500 mm, cut an opening of at least 510–515 mm × 510–515 mm
  • Into tile: the opening must be designed so that the gap between the tile and the door frame is evenly wide – ideally 2–3 mm, where you then apply silicone or grout

Important practical warning: in a bathroom with patterned tiles (e.g. 30×60 cm or 60×60 cm), it is worth planning the location of the inspection opening so that its edges run along the grout lines between the tiles. This will save you from complicated cuts and the result will be visually cleaner. If this is not possible, plan the cuts so that at least a 5 cm strip of tile remains on each side – a narrower strip easily peels off and is difficult to properly secure.

Tools and materials you will need

This is not an installation where you can manage with just a screwdriver and a pencil. Prepare in advance:

  • Angle grinder with a diamond blade for cutting ceramics (not a metal cutting blade) – for cutting tiles
  • Hammer drill or SDS hammer – for drilling into masonry, concrete
  • Carbide-tipped drill bits 6–8 mm in diameter according to the type of anchoring
  • Water level at least 60 cm long (shorter ones are unreliable on a masonry wall)
  • Utility knife or tile cutter for pre-cutting silicone sealant
  • Low-expansion mounting foam (!) – standard high-expansion foam can deform the frame or exert pressure on the surrounding tiles
  • Sanitary silicone – transparent or in a RAL shade matching the color of the door, mold-resistant
  • Concrete/masonry screws or chemical anchor + threaded rods according to the load
  • Plastic wedges or leveling shims (not wooden ones – wood swells)
  • Protective tape (painter’s tape) to cover the surrounding tiles during work
  • Diamond blade for a straight-line saw – for possible finer cuts on the edges

Step-by-step installation into a masonry wall

Step 1 – Marking and measuring the opening

Start by accurately marking the center of the inspection opening on the wall (before tiling or on existing tiling). Using a water level and pencil, draw a precise rectangle corresponding to the external dimensions of the frame plus 8–10 mm on each side. Check the diagonals – both dimensions must be the same, otherwise the rectangle will be a parallelogram. A difference greater than 2 mm will be visible to the naked eye after the frame is installed.

Before cutting, check with a cable detector to ensure there are no electrical cables or pipes behind the wall. In bathrooms, this is not uncommon – power for sockets, shower head wiring, drain pipes from the sink – all of this can be hidden exactly where you plan the opening.

Step 2 – Cutting the opening in the masonry

To cut an opening in a brick or aerated concrete wall, use either an SDS drill with a chisel or an angle grinder with a diamond blade for cutting masonry. Procedure:

  • Drill corner holes with a diameter of 10–12 mm into each corner of the marked opening
  • Use an angle grinder to cut the contour of the opening along the marked lines
  • Use a chisel and hammer (or an electric chisel) to break out the material between the cuts
  • The resulting opening must be clean, without protrusions, and its edges must be level

With aerated concrete walls (Ytong), the work is easier – the material can be easily processed with a hand saw. With a brick wall, be careful with the bricks at the edge of the opening to prevent them from falling out or breaking loose. For larger openings (e.g. 800×800 mm), consider consulting a structural engineer to determine if a lintel above the opening is needed.

Step 3 – Preparing the frame and anchoring

The frame of the inspection door is mounted into the opening using plastic leveling wedges. Insert these wedges along the sides and under the bottom edge of the frame to precisely adjust the vertical and horizontal positioning. A water level is essential on both axes.

The anchoring of the frame depends on the wall material:

  • Brick/concrete: carbide-tipped drill bit + turbo screw (concrete screw) with a diameter of 6 mm, minimum length 60 mm. At least 2 anchoring points on each side of the frame. Pre-drill through the frame and into the wall.
  • Aerated concrete (Ytong): chemical anchor or special screws for Ytong (e.g. turbo screws Ejot or Fischer). Standard carbide-tipped screws do not hold securely in Ytong.
  • Thick wall (over 300 mm): consider anchoring the frame from both sides of the wall – this will increase rigidity and prevent the frame from "swaying."

After anchoring the frame, check that the frame does not move, that it is in a vertical position, and that the door fits properly in the frame. This is the last moment when you can easily adjust the position.

Step 4 – Filling the gaps with mounting foam

Fill the gap between the frame and the wall with low-expansion mounting foam. Standard high-expansion foam exerts too much pressure and can deform the frame – this will result in the door becoming difficult to open or not sealing properly. Low-expansion foam (marked on the can) is only slightly more expensive, but the result is much better.

Apply the foam in one layer, do not fill the gap completely – the foam will slightly expand after hardening. After 30–60 minutes (depending on the manufacturer and temperature), cut off the excess with a knife. The visible surface of the foam will be covered with silicone or a decorative strip. Installation procedure in existing ceramic tiling

This is the most demanding scenario. The bathroom is fully tiled, the plumbing is functional, and suddenly you need an inspection opening — either because a pipe problem was discovered late, or during renovation. From experience, I know this is a situation where everyone wants to be as fast as possible, and that's precisely when mistakes happen.

Cutting tiles with an angle grinder

For cutting ceramic tiles in existing tiling, an angle grinder with a diamond blade is the only sensible solution. A saw without a diamond blade will leave jagged edges and cause cracking. Procedure:

  • Mask the contour of the opening with painter's tape — protects adjacent tiles from scratches and damage
  • Draw the cutting line with a pencil or marker directly on the tape
  • Make the first cut shallow — only cut through the grout between tiles to a depth of about 3–5 mm, then a deeper cut through the tile itself
  • Never cut the entire length of the opening at once — make gradual shallow passes and each subsequent deeper one
  • Work slowly, with sufficient pressure, but gently — the tile must not overheat or crack

After cutting the tiles, remove the underlying layer of masonry or concrete as in the previous procedure. Important: do not mechanically remove the original adhesive grout under the tiles at the edges of the opening — you may cause adjacent tiles to loosen.

Mounting the frame into the tiling

The frame of the inspection door must be installed so that its front edge is aligned with the face of the tiles, not recessed or protruding. This is probably the most common mistake among non-professionals — the door either sinks too deep into the wall (then it is hard to open), or protrudes (looks unprofessional and may catch on clothing).

Procedure for setting the depth:

  • Measure the total thickness of the tiling layer: base wall + adhesive grout + tile thickness. Typically 15–30 mm depending on the type of tiling.
  • Insert the frame into the opening so that its front edge exactly aligns with the face of the tiles — use a straightedge, which you place over the frame and the surrounding tiling
  • Insert wedges from the sides and top, anchor the frame into the wall

The gap between the frame and the edges of the tiles (usually 2–5 mm) is filled with sanitary silicone. Apply the silicone after anchoring the frame, after completing any work around the opening, and after thoroughly cleaning the surfaces. Do not use grout (mortar) to fill this area — it is rigid, cracks under minor movement, and moisture gets under the tiling.

Special situations: bath, corner openings and thick walls

Inspection opening behind the bath

One of the most common locations for inspection hatches in the bathroom is the space behind the bath – access to the bath trap, or to the plumbing behind the bath faucet. This location has specific features: the tiling behind the bath is usually at a height of 30–80 cm from the floor, where physical access for work is limited. In addition, the wall behind the bath may be damp from long-term condensation, which complicates the adhesion of silicone.

Basic rules: the hatch must be sealed watertight all around, the frame must not be made of a material that rusts, and the hatch must be easily openable even from a low height.

Corner openings and thin walls

Sometimes an inspection opening is necessary in a partition wall with a thickness of 8–10 cm (e.g., a thin separating partition made of Ytong). In such a case, the frame is anchored directly through the wall – screws pass through the entire thickness of the wall and are secured on the other side with a nut and washer. This system is more solid than anchoring points only in the wall, and for thin walls it is the only reasonable alternative to chemical anchors.

Practical tips – what to avoid

Over the years of field work, I have seen several recurring mistakes that I would like to save you from:

  • Too much mounting foam – the frame bulges inward, the hatch cannot be closed. Always use low-expansion foam in a thin layer.
  • Forgotten silicone or the use of grout – within a year, problems with moisture and mold behind the frame begin.
  • Frame installed crooked – check the level not only before filling with foam, but also after it has hardened, as the foam can slightly shift the frame. If it moves, you can still work with the foam about 15–20 minutes after application.
  • Inappropriate dimensions – the hatch is too small to access what it is supposed to serve. Always verify exactly what you need to reach through the opening – a pipe shaft, a trap, a valve? And what tools do you need to get in there?
  • Ignoring expansion gaps for large dimensions – for hatches 800×800 mm and larger (e.g., large metal inspection hatches B1 800×800 mm), always leave at least 5 mm expansion gap around the frame.
  • Inadequate anchoring – the hatch gradually loosens, clicks with each opening, and eventually falls out. At least 2 anchoring points on each side of the frame.

Choosing the right lock and type of hatch according to the situation

The type of lock and construction of the hatch also influence the installation method. With the B1 system with a square lock, opening and closing is controlled by a key or a special key, which is suitable where you want to prevent accidental opening (e.g., in common areas or bathrooms accessible to children). The hatch closes tightly and hermetically against the frame.

You will appreciate this for hatches that are accessed regularly (e.g., behind the bath to the valves). The installation is the same, but with a snap lock, make sure the opening is sufficiently rigid – the lock exerts less pressure on the frame when closing, but if the frame loses rigidity due to wear, the hatch may not close properly on its own.

After completing all work, before closing and handing over, perform a visual and functional inspection:

  • The hatch opens and closes without much effort – no more than 20–30 N force when opening
  • The frame shows no deviation from the vertical or horizontal position – check with a level
  • The silicone is evenly applied without gaps, aligned with the tile surface
  • No cracks in the surrounding tiles
  • The foam behind the frame does not protrude outward – if it does, cut it off and cover with silicone
  • The lock or snap mechanism works reliably, without jamming
  • The frame does not move when the hatch is closed – if it does, the anchoring is insufficient

After completing the installation, let the silicone dry for at least 24 hours before the first submersion or cleaning of the surfaces. Most sanitary silicones are fully cured after 48–72 hours.

Can I install inspection doors into the tiling myself, or should I hire a professional?

The installation is technically feasible for a skilled DIY enthusiast, provided they have the right tools – especially an angle grinder with a diamond disc, an SDS chisel drill, and a spirit level. The challenge is cutting the tiles, where every mistake is visible. If you lack experience in cutting ceramic, I recommend trying the first cut on a waste tile. The final result is also influenced by the accuracy of measurements – if you are unsure, consult an experienced craftsman at least during the planning of the position and size of the opening.

What type of silicone should I use for installation in the bathroom?

Always use sanitary silicone with a fungicidal additive (mold resistance). Basic acetate silicone is not suitable for wet areas – it will start to mold within a few months. Choose the color according to the color of the door frame and the surrounding tiling – transparent is universal, white RAL 9010 matches the standard white surface of the doors.

Can I install inspection doors into a masonry wall without anchor screws, just on foam?

Technically, it is possible for small doors (up to 300×300 mm) and only with low-expansion foam combined with adhesive sealant. For any standard size (400×400 mm and larger), I do not recommend it – foam does not have sufficient load-bearing capacity with repeated opening and closing, and the frame will gradually loosen. Screwing takes only 10 extra minutes and results in a product that lasts several years longer.

Can I move the doors a few centimeters after the tiling is completed?

No, without significant damage to the tiling. If you installed the doors before tiling, moving them means cutting out the tiles around the frame, removing the frame, sealing the original opening, and repeating the entire process. Therefore, it is essential to have the final position of the doors clearly defined before starting the tiling. Mark the position with a spirit level and pencil before sticking the first tile.

What to do if a neighboring tile cracks while cutting the tiling?

The cracked tile must be replaced – sealing the crack with sealant is not enough, as it will widen over time and allow moisture to enter. Carefully chisel out the cracked tile from the center toward the edges (not the other way around – this risks damaging adjacent tiles), remove the remaining adhesive from the wall, and apply a new tile of the same type. That is why it is always good to have a few spare tiles of the original tiling during renovation.

What type of mounting foam should I choose for a wet environment?

Always choose foam labeled "waterproof" or "for wet environments". Standard PUR mounting foam degrades under long-term moisture and loses its insulating properties. In addition, for bathrooms, I recommend a low-expansion version (e.g., marked as "hand gun" with adjustable expansion) – standard high-expansion foam can press against the frame during drying and deform it, causing problems with closing the doors.
