Types of leaks – what drips from where and what it means

The first step in diagnosis is to determine exactly where the water is coming from. This is not a trivial question – different leak locations have different causes and require different solutions. Confusing them is a waste of time and money.

Dripping from the spout (outlet) when the tap is closed

This is by far the most common type of problem. The tap is closed, the lever or handles are in the "off" position, and despite that, water drips from the outlet. Over time, they harden, deform, and lose elasticity – especially in areas with hard water or with aggressive cleaning agents.

Dripping at the base of the tap or under the sink

If water is leaking not from the outlet or around the lever, but from the body of the tap – that is, where the tap sits on the sink or the bathtub rim – the cause may be different. Most often, it is due to loose or cracked supply hoses, insufficiently tightened supply nuts, or a worn seal between the hose and the tap. Rarely, it may also be a crack in the tap body itself, which is very rare in a quality brass construction.

There are several reasons why a faucet starts to drip, and each has a different mechanism of occurrence. An experienced technician can estimate the cause before even opening the faucet by observing the character of the dripping and the faucet's history.

Wear of ceramic discs in the cartridge

Modern Vittoria faucets use ceramic cartridge mechanisms. Two ceramic discs - one fixed and one movable - slide against each other when the handle is turned, regulating the water flow. Ceramic is extremely hard and durable, but it is not indestructible. In areas with hard water (i.e., high calcium and magnesium content), mineral deposits settle on the contact surfaces, acting like an abrasive. Every movement of the handle then slightly grinds the surface of the discs. After years of use, micro-grooves appear, and the discs no longer seal perfectly.

Deposits can mechanically prevent the complete closure of the cartridge, which is manifested precisely by dripping when the faucet is closed.

Pressure surges (water hammer, hydraulic shock) occur when water is suddenly closed off - for example, when a washing machine automatically turns off, when a tap is quickly closed in another part of the apartment, or when pressure in the pipe drops and is restored. Diagnosis - how to find the leak location without unnecessary disassembly

Before you start disassembling the faucet, perform a simple visual diagnosis. Dry the entire area under the sink, wipe the faucet dry, and let it sit for a while. Then check each location in the specified order:

  • Supply hoses under the faucet: Dry them with a towel and check each connection with your fingers - hose/faucet and hose/angle valve. Moisture on the hoses that appears regardless of whether the faucet is running indicates a leak at the connections.

Repair procedure - from the simplest to the most demanding

Repairing a Vittoria faucet has several levels of complexity. We always recommend starting with the simplest one and only proceeding to the next level if it does not help.

Step 1 - Closing the water supply and preparation

Every faucet repair starts with closing the angle valve under the sink. If the angle valve is not functional or missing, it is necessary to close the main water supply to the apartment. Never start disassembling the faucet with the water supply open - even a short moment of inattention can cause a flood. After closing the valve, open the faucet fully to drain the remaining water from the pipes. Prepare a tray or towel to catch the remaining water in the faucet body.

Step 2 – Lever disassembly and access to the cartridge

On the single-lever mixer Vittoria, there is a screw hidden under the protective colored cap (red = hot, blue = cold, or a common white cap) – usually a cross or Allen (hex) M4 or M5 screw. Carefully lift the cap and unscrew the lever fixing screw. Then pull the lever vertically upwards. Under the lever, you will see a closing cover (cartridge housing) that holds the cartridge in place – unscrew or push it out (depending on the model). The cartridge can then be pulled straight up.

Important: Before removing the cartridge, take a photo of its position and orientation, or at least note which side faces the hot and which the cold water. Incorrect insertion of the cartridge will cause the hot and cold water to be swapped, which is fixable, but unnecessarily prolongs the work.

Step 3 – Inspection and replacement of the cartridge or seals

Inspect the removed cartridge. If you see visible damage (cracks, broken parts, or deep grooves on the ceramic), the cartridge must be replaced. If there is no visible damage to the naked eye, check the O-rings – these are rubber rings on the cartridge body, usually two or three pieces. They should be flexible, not hard or cracked. Replace worn O-rings with new ones of the same dimensions – standard dimensions for Vittoria mixers range from 12×2 mm to 18×2 mm, depending on the model. Before installation, gently grease the new O-rings with silicone lubricant – this prolongs their lifespan and eases insertion.

If the cartridge shows no visible mechanical damage but you suspect lime scale deposits, you can try soaking it in a solution of white vinegar (250 ml of vinegar in 500 ml of water) for 30–60 minutes. Pull out the spindle and at its lower end you will find a rubber washer – the valve seal. In most cases, this seal can be unscrewed or simply removed. The replacement seal must have the same diameter and thickness. In addition to the seal, also check the seat – the surface on which the washer sits. If the seat is damaged (grooves, corrosion), replacing the seal will not help and the dripping will return. A damaged seat can be repaired with a special tool – a seat wrench – but this is a job for a more experienced plumber.

Step 5 – Inspection and tightening of connecting hoses

If the leak is at the hose connections, it is usually enough to slightly tighten the nut by half a turn with a wrench. Emphasis is placed on the word "slightly" – hose nuts made of soft metal are easily over-tightened, which deforms the seal and worsens the leak. If tightening does not help, replace the seal – for G3/8" connecting hoses, a flat fiber (cardboard) or rubber gasket of 2–3 mm thickness and 12–14 mm diameter is used. Teflon tape (fiberglass tape) is not used for connecting hoses – these connections are designed for flat gaskets.

When to repair and when to replace the entire mixer

This question is very important in practice, and the answer depends on several factors. Not every repair is financially worthwhile – sometimes it is cheaper and more practical to replace the entire mixer.

Repair makes sense if:

  • The mixer is less than 8 years old and has only one leak
  • Replacement parts are available at a reasonable price (cartridges for Vittoria mixers are commonly available)
  • Other parts of the mixer are in good condition – there are no visible corrosion, cracks, or wear of the chrome plating
  • It is a higher quality model that cost significantly more when purchased

Replacing the entire mixer is a better option if:

Excessive tightening of nuts: Connecting nuts on hoses are made of soft brass and easily deform. It is enough to tighten them by half a turn beyond the point where dripping stops. If you tighten too much, you will deform the seal and will have to replace the entire hose.

Swapping hot and cold sides of the cartridge: The cartridge has an orientation – its inlet holes must fit into the correct connections (hot/cold). As we mentioned, take a photo of the position before removing it.

Using the wrong lubricant: Never use classic machine oil, WD-40 or vaseline on rubber O-rings. These substances attack the rubber and accelerate its degradation. The only correct lubricant for rubber seals in faucets is clean silicone lubricant in the form of gel or paste.

Turning on the water before fully assembling the faucet: A classic mistake – water under pressure in an open system can cause a geyser. Always assemble first, and then slowly open the corner valve.

Ignoring the condition of the seat when replacing the seal: If you replace the seal but the seat is damaged, dripping will return in a few months. Always check the condition of the seat.

Preventive maintenance – how to avoid dripping in the future

A few simple habits significantly extend the life of seals and the cartridge:

  • Leave the handle in the middle position: Set the handle so that when turned on again, hot water does not flow immediately. Daily contact with 60–70 °C water wears out rubber much faster.
  • Regular cleaning of the aerator: A clogged aerator increases hydraulic resistance in the faucet, which can indicate increased pressure on internal parts. Clean it every 3–6 months.   • Do not let the aerator and hose become clogged with limescale: Deposits from the hose can back-contaminate the inside of the faucet. Regular soaking in vinegar (once every six months is enough) eliminates the problem.
