Maintenance and cleaning of bathroom furniture according to surface material

Bathroom furniture is among the most demanding pieces of furniture in the entire household in terms of the conditions in which it must function. Alternating humidity, steam from hot water, drops of soap solution, limescale, and cleaning agents affect the surface of cabinets, mirrors, and washbasin blocks literally every day. And despite this, we expect bathroom furniture to look fresh even after five or ten years.

From practice, I know that most problems with bathroom furniture do not arise due to poor material quality, but due to improper care. Customers use abrasive sponges on glossy acrylic lacquer, pour bleach on porous surfaces, or leave water standing in corners and joints. The result? Swelling, cloudy streaks, cracked edges. And yet proper maintenance takes on average five minutes per week.

Why the type of surface matters

Not every piece of bathroom furniture is the same – even if it looks similar at first glance. The cabinet carcass can be made of moisture-resistant chipboard, MDF (medium-density fiberboard), or PVC, with the surface covered by acrylic lacquer, melamine film, PVC film, natural veneer, or polyurethane lacquer. Each of these materials reacts differently to water, chemicals, mechanical damage, and heat.

If you use the wrong cleaning product, you can irreversibly damage the surface, about which I can speak from personal experience: customers who used toilet cleaner (with acid) on glossy white lacquer came with a dull, faded surface that could not be restored to its original condition. And yet it would have been enough to know what works on a given material.

Glossy and matte acrylic lacquer (High Gloss, Soft Close)

Acrylic lacquer – most commonly in the version High Gloss (intensely glossy) or Soft Matte (gently matte) – is currently the most widespread surface of modern bathroom furniture. This layer is applied directly to MDF or chipboard and provides an aesthetically clean, elegant look.

Properties and vulnerable areas

Glossy acrylic lacquer looks amazing – until you look at it from the side in natural light. Fingerprints, water stains, and micro-scratches are immediately visible on it. Matte variants are more forgiving in this regard, but are much more sensitive to grease and cosmetics.

  • Sensitivity to abrasion: high – even the soft side of a sponge must not be dry when cleaning
  • Sensitivity to acids and alkalis: medium to high – avoid cleaners with a pH lower than 5 or higher than 9
  • Sensitivity to heat: medium – direct sunlight through a window can cause yellowing of white tones over time
  • Water resistance: high, provided the surface is not damaged or cracked

How to properly clean acrylic lacquer

For everyday cleaning, a soft microfiber cloth dampened with clean water is sufficient. Move in long, even strokes in one direction – circular movements leave characteristic circular micro-scratches on the glossy lacquer, which over time cause diffuse cloudiness of the entire surface. After wiping with water, always dry thoroughly with a dry microfiber cloth – every drop left to dry on glossy lacquer leaves a stain.

For weekly more thorough cleaning, use a slightly diluted solution of neutral soap (pH 6–8) or a special cleaner for glossy lacquered surfaces. There are available products for acrylic surfaces (e.g., for acrylic bathtubs or shower trays) that work just as well on lacquered furniture.

What you should never use on acrylic lacquer:

  • Abrasive cleaning creams and powders (Cif cream, Ajax powder, etc.)
  • Steel wool, hard scrubbing sponges, grinding brushes
  • Cleaners based on acetone or alcohol above 20 % (degreaser, some disinfectants)
  • Toilet bowl cleaners with sulfuric or hydrochloric acid
  • WD-40 spray or other oily products – they temporarily polish the surface, but soften the lacquer over time

Tip from practice: If you want to keep glossy furniture clean for longer and protect it from fingerprints, you can apply a thin film of special plastic polish (intended for acrylic) once a month. It creates a protective layer that makes wiping easier and reduces the visibility of fingerprints.

Melamine and PVC foil (decorative foil)

Melamine foil and PVC (vinyl) foil are the most practical and durable surfaces you encounter in bathroom furniture. These are not the same materials – melamine is a paper layer impregnated with melamine resin and pressed under pressure directly onto the board, while PVC foil is plastic and either glued or thermoformed onto a shaped surface.

Regular maintenance of foiled surfaces

Both types are significantly more resistant to moisture and mechanical influences than lacquered surfaces, making them an ideal choice for families with children or for bathrooms with high usage intensity. For regular cleaning, a damp cloth is sufficient – in the case of dried dirt, a mild dish soap solution. Water does not leave permanent marks on the foil, provided it does not run into grooves and edges.

Critical areas of foiled surfaces: edges and joints, where the foil meets the edge of the board. If standing water remains in these areas for a long time – for example on a shelf around the sink or on the lower edge of the cabinet under the sink – the foil will begin to peel off in that spot. What foiled surfaces cannot avoid

  • Aggressive solvents (acetone, toluene, technical alcohol) damage the foil and cause permanent color changes
  • Scratching with hard objects leaves visible grooves, which cannot be sanded out like on a wooden surface
  • Strong bleaching agents (sodium hypochlorite) can cause discoloration of the foil color in dark shades
  • Long-term contact with boiling water (e.g. from a diffuser above the furniture) can cause local swelling of the foil

Natural veneer and wooden surfaces

Veneered furniture or furniture made from solid wood is still sought after for its authentic aesthetics – a warm, organic look that no plastic or lacquer can fully replace. In the bathroom, however, wood is in direct danger, because its natural properties – expansion, moisture absorption, sensitivity to temperature – are directly in contrast with the environment into which we place it.

Surface treatment of wooden cabinets

Manufacturers of bathroom furniture made from veneer or solid wood always apply a surface protective treatment – most often polyurethane lacquer, water-thinnable acrylic lacquer or oil/wax treatment. Maintenance depends on this.

Lacquered wooden surfaces are cleaned similarly to lacquered MDF – with a damp microfiber cloth, neutral soap, and always dried thoroughly after wiping. Important: never allow water to stand on the wooden surface for longer than a few minutes. Water penetrates even through the lacquer, especially if the lacquer has microcracks at the edges and grooves.

Oiled or waxed wooden surfaces require special attention. These surfaces are not sealed like lacquered ones, so they are much more sensitive to moisture. For cleaning, use a minimal amount of water and always a specific cleaner for oiled wood. Once a year (or according to the manufacturer), the oil layer must be renewed – applying a thin layer of fresh oil and rubbing it into the surface with a cloth.

Solid wood in the bathroom – a realistic view

I will be honest: solid wood in the bathroom is beautiful, but demanding. Even the most expensive polyurethane lacquer will crack over time, the wood will move and moisture will find a way. If you choose wooden furniture, follow a few basic rules:

  • The bathroom must be well ventilated – mechanical ventilation is a necessity, not a luxury
  • Do not install wooden furniture directly next to the shower or bath without any protective wall/partition
  • Ventilate after each shower – humidity in the air above 70 % is harmful to wood in the long term
  • Check the joints and edges once a year, and if you notice that the lacquer is letting water in, treat the area immediately with transparent wood lacquer

Water scale and limescale – the most common enemy

In most regions of Slovakia, we have hard water with a high content of calcium and magnesium. When such water dries on the surface of the furniture, it leaves characteristic white, matte stains – water scale. This topic deserves its own section, because the way to remove water scale depends directly on the surface material and an incorrect procedure can cause more damage than the scale itself.

Water scale on acrylic lacquer

Do not use acids – neither vinegar nor citric acid! These compounds are indeed effective against water scale, but they also attack the lacquer and can cause surface dulling. Use special water scale removers that are formulated as ph-neutral or gently acidic (pH 4–5) and certified by the manufacturer for lacquer. Apply to a damp cloth (not directly to the surface), gently wipe without rubbing and immediately rinse with clean water.

Water scale on foils and PVC surfaces

Here you have a bit more freedom. Diluted vinegar (1:3 with water) or a citric acid solution (1 teaspoon per 250 ml of water) are safe on foil surfaces. Apply the solution, let it work for 2–3 minutes and wipe with a soft cloth. Let it work longer only if the scale is particularly thick, but watch how the surface behaves – with old foils with cracks this can be a problem.

Water scale on wood

On lacquered wood the procedure is similar to lacquered surfaces – we avoid acids. Problems arise when water scale forms on unlacquered or only oiled wood – in that case, immediate intervention is recommended, because calcium binds directly into the wood and is practically irreparable without mechanical intervention, which damages the surface.

Mirrors, mirror cabinets and glass surfaces

Mirrors are an inseparable part of bathroom furniture and their cleaning also has its own specifics. A regular glass cleaner (based on alcohol or ammonia) works well on the mirror itself, but be careful with the edges – most mirrors have an aluminum or silver layer at the edge, which is sensitive to moisture. If water runs into the edge (for example during installation without sufficient drainage), black edge occurs – black edges caused by metal oxidation under the glass. This effect is permanent and the mirror must be replaced.

Correct procedure: apply the cleaner to a cloth, never directly to the mirror. Wipe from the center to the edges, not the other way around. With a mirror cabinet, make sure the liquid does not seep into the gap between the mirror and the frame or body. Metal accessories, handles, hinges and hangers

Metal parts of bathroom furniture – handles, hangers, hidden joints, legs – require special attention. Stainless steel (inox) is the most common material, but in bathrooms with hard water and aggressive cleaning agents, even it is subject to surface corrosion (so-called pitting corrosion – red dots).

Chromed surfaces and chrome-plated hangers should not be cleaned with abrasives, wire brushes or dry cloths. A damp microfiber cloth is sufficient for them, and once a month a thin layer of special chrome polishing agent is enough, which creates a protective layer and extends the life of the surface. Suspension mechanisms (e.g. soft-close) have no special cleaning requirements – just make sure that cleaning agents do not get into the joint mechanism, as they can break down the lubricant and shorten the life.

Practical maintenance frequency – weekly and monthly plan

One of the most common mistakes is that bathroom furniture is cleaned only when it is "visibly dirty". In practice, this means that water scale and soap deposits have weeks to harden and bake into the surface. Preventive regular maintenance is several times easier than the remediation of dried dirt.

Every day (2 minutes): after the last use of the bathroom, simply wipe the outer surfaces of the furniture with a dry cloth. This removes dried water and soap droplets before they have time to harden. It really only takes two minutes.

Once a week (10–15 minutes): a general cleaning of the surfaces with a damp microfiber cloth and a neutral cleaning agent. Pay attention to corners, gaps, lower edges of doors and areas around the sink. If you have a sink directly integrated into the cabinet (monoblock), also wipe the bottom of the sink and the gap between the sink and the body.

Once a month (20–30 minutes): thorough cleaning including treatment of metal parts, checking hinges and their possible gentle lubrication, checking silicone joints and seals. If relevant, apply a protective agent (polish for lacquer, oil for wood). Clean the inside of the cabinets – cosmetic residues, dust and moisture inside contribute to mold formation.

Once a year (complete inspection): check all visible edges and gaps of the furniture. If you see beginning bulges, peeling foil or cracks in the lacquer, solve them immediately – local repairs take minutes and stop further spread of damage. Check the silicone around the sink and if it is blackened or cracked, replace it. Mold and biological deposits in bathroom furniture

Mold in the bathroom is not only an aesthetic issue but also a health concern. It typically appears in silicone joints around the sink, on the back wall of the cabinet (if it is placed against a damp wall), and inside the cabinet in the corners. A black or green coating is a sign that moisture has been lingering in that area for a long time.

To treat mold, an effective solution is bleach (1:10 with water) applied for 10–15 minutes, but only on surfaces that can tolerate it – laminates, silicone, ceramic. Do not use bleach on lacquered wooden or acrylic surfaces – it will damage the surface and will not solve the problem in depth. For wood, antifungal products based on tebuconazole or propiconazole, available at hardware stores, are suitable.

Prevention is always better than treatment: ensure sufficient ventilation, open the window or turn on the fan for at least 20 minutes after showering, and leave the cabinet doors slightly open after cleaning to allow the interior to dry.

Specific tips for different types of bathrooms

Bathroom furniture in a small bathroom without a window is exposed to dramatically higher humidity than furniture in a large bathroom with direct ventilation. We also recommend using moisture absorbers (silica gel bags or electric dehumidifiers), which will reduce the relative humidity of the air.

In bathrooms with a walk-in shower without a bathtub, water droplets are dispersed more aggressively through the space than in a shower with a curtain. If your furniture is closer than 80–100 cm from the shower, consider installing a larger glass partition or increase the frequency of wiping the furniture to daily. Restoration and surface regeneration – what can be repaired

A worn or slightly damaged surface of bathroom furniture does not always mean the need to buy a new one. In practice, many things can be repaired:

  • Micro-scratches on glossy lacquer: a gentle car polish (Polish or Swirl Remover) applied with a soft cloth in circular motions can reduce the visibility of shallow scratches
  • Peeling edge of the laminate: re-attachment using contact adhesive for PVC, or with a heat gun if it is thermoformed laminate
  • Burned or discolored spot on the lacquer: local repainting with an aerosol spray in the corresponding shade (you need to know the paint number from the manufacturer)
  • Swollen edge of MDF: if the damage is not extensive, the swelling can be sanded down and the area treated with sealing lacquer – if the MDF is swollen in a larger area, replacing the part of the furniture is likely more economical
  • Rusted metal hinges: replacing the hinges is simple and inexpensive – most hinges are standardized (Blum, Hettich, etc.) and can be ordered without the need to replace the entire cabinet

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Can I use vinegar or citric acid on bathroom furniture to remove limescale?

It depends on the material. Diluted vinegar (1:3 with water) or a solution of citric acid is safe and effective for PVC and melamine laminates. Do not use these acids on acrylic lacquer or lacquered wooden surfaces – they may cause permanent clouding or cracking of the lacquer. In such cases, use special cleaners with certification for lacquered surfaces, or pH-neutral limescale removers.

Why do white stains appear on the doors of bathroom cabinets that cannot be wiped away?

Most often, it is sealed limescale or dried soap residue. If the stains are on lacquered surfaces and a neutral cleaner does not help, try a glass cleaner (without acetone) – it can be used on lacquer, unlike limescale removers. If the surface remains cloudy even after cleaning, it may be micro-scratches from a previous inappropriate cleaning product, which is unfortunately a permanent damage to the lacquer.

How long will bathroom furniture last without surface damage with proper maintenance?

Quality bathroom furniture from the mid- to high-end segment should last 10–15 years without visible surface damage with proper maintenance. PVC laminated surfaces are, from experience, the most durable. A perfect acrylic lacquer can last 7–12 years, after which the lacquer may begin to crack slightly. Wooden surfaces depend on the quality of oil or lacquer protection and the intensity of bathroom ventilation.

What to do if mold appears on the back wall inside the bathroom cabinet?

First step: eliminate the mold with an antifungal product (biocidal spray or a 1:10 bleach solution on non-absorbent surfaces). Second step: identify the cause – the back wall of the cabinet is damp either because the wall behind it is damp (problem with insulation or installation), or because the cabinet is completely enclosed and the humid air has nowhere to go. The solution is better ventilation, or placing a silica gel absorber inside the cabinet. If the back wall is made of MDF and the mold has penetrated deep, the entire back wall must be replaced.

Can I use disinfectant sprays (e.g., based on alcohol) to clean bathroom furniture?

Alcohol up to 20 % (e.g., in regular disinfectant wipes) will not leave a permanent mark on most surfaces with occasional use. Regular and intensive use of concentrated alcohol (70 % or more) on lacquer can cause brittleness and cracking in the long term. Higher concentrations of alcohol are relatively safe for PVC laminates. Never use concentrated alcohol on wood – it will dry out the oil and cause cracking.

Will a nanotechnology product help protect the surface of bathroom furniture?

Yes, nanotechnology hydrophobic protective coatings (e.g., Nanoprotect or similar) do work – they create a microscopic water-repellent layer on the surface, allowing water to slide off and leave no stains. Their effect typically lasts 3–6 months depending on the intensity of use. They are safe for most surfaces, including lacquer and laminates, but always test them on an inconspicuous area first, as some may leave a glossy finish on matte surfaces.

From years of experience, I know that bathroom furniture that looks as good after ten years as it did on the day of installation is not a matter of luck or chance. It is the result of regular, yet simple care combined with a basic principle: knowing what to use on a given surface and what to definitely avoid. Five minutes a week with a soft cloth and a neutral product can extend the lifespan of furniture by years and save hundreds of euros on premature replacement.
