If you are working in a bathroom, an installation shaft, behind a bathtub, or in a space with a plastered masonry wall, choosing the right type of inspection door is not a negligible detail. A mistake at this stage will become apparent late – usually when a real inspection is needed and it turns out that the doors do not suit the environment, do not fit the substrate, or simply look bad.

Where sheet metal doors really shine – not just in theory

Sheet metal inspection doors have a long history in industrial and engineering construction, but they have gradually found their place in everyday apartment renovations as well. Their main territory is where the environment is demanding or where aesthetic integration into the wall is secondary.

Bathroom and wet areas

In a bathroom behind a bathtub or in a shower area, inspection doors are exposed to increased humidity. Sheet metal doors with powder coating handle such environments significantly better than drywall, which swells, molds, and loses strength in long-term humidity. It is important to emphasize: not every sheet metal product is the same – the quality of the coating and possible edge treatment is important. Doors made of high-quality steel with well-applied RAL 9010 powder coating will last for decades in a bathroom without visible corrosion or deformation.

Specifically: Sheet metal inspection doors with square lock, system B1 800×800mm – RAL 9010 are a typical example of a robust solution for larger inspection openings – for example behind a bathtub, where access to both hot and cold water pipes is needed at the same time. Masonry walls and plastered surfaces

In the case of masonry walls or walls with thick lime-cement plaster, sheet metal doors are almost always the ideal choice. The reason is simple: in such a wall, the drywall filling will not be visually effective anyway, because the area around the doors is not drywall. It would be counterproductive to buy doors with an inserted drywall sheet and then struggle with sealing to a smooth plaster surface – that simply does not work. A plastered wall has a different texture, thickness, and surface. Here, sheet metal doors are the right choice: they are embedded or anchored into the frame, coated with powder coating (or left in RAL 9010), and that is the result.

Technical rooms, boiler rooms, basements, garages

In such spaces, no one expects the inspection doors to be invisible. On the contrary – they must be durable, easily accessible, securely lockable, and able to withstand mechanical damage (collisions with tools, moisture, dust). An all-metal construction will win every comparison here.

Ceilings and floors

If you are solving an inspection opening in a drywall ceiling or even in a floor (e.g., for access to a distribution unit), sheet metal doors are the standard. The reason is simple: the filling in a ceiling opening is in a horizontal position and, with repeated opening, the hinges carry the entire weight of the panel. A sheet metal panel has higher resistance to hinge and frame deformation in such conditions.

Where drywall doors win – and that significantly

Drywall inspection doors exist for one specific purpose: to be invisible after the wall is finished. If this is not your goal, they are not for you. If this is your goal – and in modern apartments and bathrooms this is often the case – then the drywall variant is the clear choice.

Drywall partitions and system walls

In assembled drywall walls (systems such as Knauf, Rigips, etc.), integration into the wall is a condition. The entire philosophy of drywall systems is that the surface is smooth, sealed, and painted. If you install sheet metal doors with visible metal edges there, it will draw attention and the wall will look unfinished. Drywall inspection doors with an inserted sheet allow the surface of the panel to be finished in the same way as the rest of the wall: drywall edges are beveled, sealed, sanded, and painted. The result is a wall without visible doors.

For smaller openings – for example, to access a valve assembly, fuse box or installation shaft of a WC – the ideal size is Inspection panel with fixed hinges and a built-in drywall panel, 300×300mm. This size is sufficient for access to water shut-offs or for a potential battery replacement without the need for demolition.

For a larger opening, where access to the entire piping or to the sewer pipe is required, the format Inspection panel with fixed hinges and a built-in drywall panel, 600×600mm is more suitable – it provides real space for work and at the same time is still small enough to be visually "hidden" in the wall after completion.

Living room, hallway, kitchen

In living areas, where the owner does not want the inspection opening to disrupt the interior aesthetics, the drywall version is the only reasonable choice. Modern apartments and houses are increasingly built with system drywall walls, and an inspection opening behind a thermostat, behind a distribution panel or behind a hidden installation must be discreet. Metal panels in such a wall look literally like a forgotten detail from the construction phase.

A lock is not just a functional detail – its type is closely related to the environment and how often you will open the panel. In general, there are two basic systems, and both are primarily found on metal inspection panels.

Square lock (system B1)

The square lock is opened using a square key or adapter, which is not a common item in a household. This is intentional – such panels are intended for areas that should not be accessible to everyone: boiler rooms, distribution cabinets, installation shafts in apartment buildings, technical rooms. The square lock is more robust, more resistant to vandalism and provides a real level of security. A typical product is, for example, system B1 in size 800×800mm, where the larger format and security lock together form a meaningful whole for a larger installation node.

Snaphook lock (system B2)

The snaphook lock works on the principle of a magnetic or mechanical spring hinge – the panel closes by pressing and opens by pulling or pressing and releasing (push-to-open). This is a solution for places where access to the panel is common and does not require tools – for example, behind a bathtub, under a sink or in a bathroom installation shaft. The snaphook system B2 is available in sizes 500×500mm and 600×600mm, which are typical dimensions for bathroom inspection openings.

Drywall panels usually have a simpler locking mechanism – a simple rotating button or square recess. The reason: they are intended for minimal visual presence, so the lock should also be as inconspicuous as possible. Dimensions and Their Influence on Material Selection

The dimensions of inspection doors are not just technical parameters – they indirectly influence the choice of suitable material. Certain rules apply here, which stem from the physical properties of materials.

Gypsum board doors are mostly available up to the size of 600×600 mm. Larger dimensions are problematic in terms of the filling material: a larger panel has a higher weight, and with a larger wing, the risk of frame deformation, cracking at the sealing area, or sagging of hinges increases. For large inspection openings (800×800 mm and more), metal doors are always recommended.

Metal doors have no practical limitations in dimensions – they are manufactured from small formats (e.g. 150×150 mm for small pipe shafts) up to large technical openings (1000×1000 mm and more). Their structural rigidity does not depend on the filling, so even a large dimension does not represent a problem in terms of wing stability.

Installation – What is the real difference in work and time?

This question is important especially for installers and fitters who carry out multiple jobs and for whom every extra hour of work has its price. From practice, I can say that the difference in installation time between metal and gypsum board doors is significant.

Installation of metal doors

Metal doors are mostly mounted using embedding mortar (into masonry walls), or screws through mounting ears (into drywall constructions). The frame is placed into the opening, leveled with a spirit level, and fixed – and that is basically all. The surface treatment of the frame and wing are finished by the manufacturer (RAL 9010), so no further finishing is required. The whole operation takes an experienced installer 20 to 40 minutes including checking the lock functionality.

Installation of gypsum board doors

The process is significantly more time-consuming, as the goal is to achieve a perfect visual blend with the wall. After placing the frame (which takes about the same time as with metal doors), the joint between the frame and the gypsum board panel is sealed, the edge of the panel is beveled, sealant is applied, mesh tape is applied, drying (usually 24 hours), sanding, another coat of sealant, re-sanding, and finally painting the entire wall follow. Realistically: complete finishing of a gypsum board door into a finished wall takes 2 to 3 working days (including waiting for the sealant to dry). This must be considered when planning the construction sequence.

Price – How much do you really pay and for what?

The price of inspection doors ranges from a few euros for simple small-format metal doors up to dozens of euros for large gypsum board doors with a quality frame. The purchase price itself is only part of the total costs.

Metal doors are more affordable, the installation is quick and does not require additional material (sealant, mesh tape, paint, sandpaper). Total costs for realization are lower even if a paid craftsman is doing the installation.

Gypsum board doors are more expensive themselves, and the cost of finishing work must be added: sealant, mesh tape, sanding, double time allocation for the fitter, paint matching the entire wall. In the case of professional installation, the total cost difference for one opening can be 50 to 120 euros compared to metal doors of the same format. If you are doing the doors yourself in a given project and are skilled, the difference is reduced, but the time factor remains.

Practical conclusion: if invisibility of the doors is not a condition, there is no reason to pay extra for the gypsum board variant. If the goal is perfect integration into the gypsum board wall and aesthetics are a priority – gypsum board doors are worth it.

Special situations and edge cases from practice

Customer experience shows that in practice, there are situations that do not fall into clear categories. A few examples:

  • Bathroom with a combination of gypsum board wall and tiling: If the inspection opening is behind the bathtub, where the lower part of the wall is tiled and the upper part is gypsum board, a metal door is a more logical choice – the tiling will not look aesthetically pleasing with the gypsum board anyway, so invisibility is impossible. Metal doors can either be tiled (a special technique where tiling is applied to the front of the wing) or left white as a contrast.
  • Gypsum board wall in a humid environment: If the gypsum board wall in the bathroom is made of impregnated gypsum board (green GKF), gypsum board inspection doors can be used there – but only if the entire surface of the wall is well waterproofed. We recommend consulting this combination with the contractor before ordering.
  • Ceiling with plaster: Ceilings are usually plastered, not gypsum board. For inspection doors in a ceiling opening (e.g. for access to hidden installation), metal doors are always the right choice, as the ceiling plaster does not allow meaningful integration of a gypsum board panel.
  • Renovation of an older apartment: In a panel apartment, the walls are concrete or made of gas-silicate blocks with plaster. Gypsum board doors do not belong here. Metal, plastered or tiled, are the only reasonable solution.

Maintenance and Lifespan – What Lasts Longer?

From the perspective of lifespan, sheet metal panels with powder coating have a clear advantage. Provided that the installation is correct and the environment is normal, they can last 20 to 30 years without repair. Their wear is usually visible on the lock or hinges (slippage, dried grease), which are simple to fix.

Gypsum board panels have a shorter lifespan of the gypsum board filling – the SK board in the panel gradually absorbs moisture, and if the painted surface is not maintained, surface cracks may appear at the junction of the frame and the filling. These are, however, solvable issues (retouching, repainting), not a reason to replace the panel. The mechanical part (frame, hinges, lock) has the same lifespan as sheet metal panels.

Can I use gypsum board inspection panels in the bathroom?

It depends on the specific location. If the panel is on an SK partition in a drier part of the bathroom (e.g., behind the toilet tank or on a side wall away from the shower), and the wall is made of impregnated gypsum board (GKF), you can use SK panels – provided that the surface is covered with a waterproof coating or tiling. If the panel is in close proximity to the shower or bathtub, we strongly recommend sheet metal panels, as repeated moisture will eventually damage the SK panel filling and cause deformations.

Can sheet metal inspection panels be tiled to look more aesthetic?

Yes, and this is quite common in practice, especially in bathrooms with full wall tiling. Tiling (ceramic, stone, mosaic) is glued onto the front of the sheet metal panel using suitable adhesive for metal and ceramic. The result is an aesthetically pleasing and technically durable finish. Just make sure that the added weight of the tiling does not overload the hinges – with larger formats, more robust hinges are usually an advantage of sheet metal panels.

Which type is more suitable for industrial spaces and technical rooms?

In such spaces, sheet metal inspection panels are the right choice without exception. Technical spaces – boiler rooms, warehouses, garages, switch rooms – require mechanical strength, resistance to moisture and dust, and a real security function of the lock. A square lock (system B1) also prevents unauthorized access to installations. Gypsum board panels have no added value in such conditions and the SK filling would quickly be damaged.

Can I replace the SK panel filling if it gets damaged?

Theoretically yes – the filling is glued into the metal frame of the panel, which means that after careful removal (knife, heat, solvent), a new SK board can be inserted. In practice, however, this is quite laborious and most people prefer to replace the entire panel in such a situation. Common surface damage (crack in the sealing, peeling paint) can be repaired using standard finishing methods without replacing the filling.

Is there any difference between fixed and hidden hinges – and which is more suitable for which material?

Fixed hinges (visible) are simpler, cheaper, and more mechanically durable – they are especially suitable for sheet metal panels in technical spaces. Hidden hinges (built-in, invisible) are typical for gypsum board panels, where the goal is maximum discretion. Hidden hinges allow opening without a visible joint on the surface of the wall, which is aesthetically advantageous for SK applications. In wet environments, make sure that hidden hinges are made of stainless steel or galvanized material.

What should I do if I don't know what type of wall I have?

A simple test: knock on the wall. A hollow sound means a gypsum board partition, a solid and hard sound means masonry (brick, hollow brick, concrete). A second test: try to push a thin pin into the wall without drilling – it will easily go through gypsum board, not through masonry. If you are still unsure, the opening for the inspection panel will soon reveal the internal structure – and only then choose the correct type of panel. General rule: for SK walls – SK panels, for masonry – sheet metal panels.

Conclusion – How to Decide Simply and Correctly

The whole logic of choosing between sheet metal and gypsum board inspection panels can be simplified into two questions. First: What is the base material of the wall? Gypsum board → SK panels. Masonry, concrete, plaster → sheet metal panels. Second question: Is it important that the panels are not visible? Yes → SK panels (but only if the base allows it). It is not a priority → sheet metal panels.

In practice, the vast majority of bathroom and technical applications end up with sheet metal panels, as they are more universal, cost-effective, and technically durable. Gypsum board panels have a clear place in projects where wall aesthetics is the primary condition – and there they are irreplaceable. They come with higher installation time and finishing requirements, but the result – invisible inspection panels in a smooth wall – cannot be achieved otherwise.
