Outdoor heating is a specific discipline. Convectors, hot-air fans and classic radiators don't stand a chance here – you simply can't hold air in place outdoors. Any solution based on heating the air is essentially pointless on a terrace or in a garden, because the heated air immediately escapes into the surroundings.

It's the same as the sun – we don't see the sun heating the air, but it heats us directly. Short-wave (halogen) infrared heaters
These operate at a bulb temperature of 1,800 – 2,200 °C, emitting both light and heat. Their advantage is an instant onset of heat output – within a second. The disadvantage: a noticeable red glow, which some people find disturbing during an evening sit-out. Medium-wave infrared heaters
These operate at a lower radiant temperature (600 – 900 °C), emit less visible light and provide more thermal comfort. The heat-up is somewhat slower (15 – 60 seconds to full output). Outdoors, they're best suited where light glare is undesirable – for example, at a romantic evening gathering or in restaurants with a pleasant atmosphere.
Dark (tube) infrared heaters
These emit heat without any visible light. Their emitter operates at a temperature of 400 – 600 °C. Heat output is in the range of 1,500 – 6,000 W. They are suitable, for example, for covered restaurant terraces or larger pergolas where you need constant thermal comfort without light disturbance. Disadvantage: compared to short-wave heaters, they are larger and have a longer warm-up time.
Portable stand-mounted infrared heaters
A special category for the garden – stand-mounted units that require no installation and can simply be moved as needed. They plug into a 230 V outlet, with output typically 1,500 – 2,000 W. Suitable for garden parties, barbecue gatherings, or cases where you don't want to mount anything. However, keep in mind that cable management on a terrace can be impractical.
What output do you need for a terrace or garden gazebo?
This is the most common question and also the most important one when choosing a heater. Outdoor spaces work differently than indoor ones – there's no heat loss through walls, but you do need to account for heat escaping into the open space. General rule of thumb for outdoor use:
- Protected terrace (glazed or enclosed by masonry walls): 150 – 200 W/m² of area under the heater
- Partially covered terrace (pergola, shelter): 200 – 300 W/m²
- Open terrace or garden corner: 300 – 500 W/m² (depending on wind and temperature)
Real-life example: a customer had a 4 × 5 m pergola (20 m²), with two sides open and one wall enclosed. We installed three 2,000 W infrared heaters (6,000 W total), i.e. 300 W/m². IP rating and weather resistance
This is where the most common mistakes happen with uninformed purchases. Not every infrared heater can be installed outdoors. Outdoor units must have a minimum rating of IP44, preferably IP65 or higher. What do these numbers mean?
- IP44: protected against solid objects larger than 1 mm and against water splashing from all directions. Suitable for protected locations (under a roof, under a pergola).
- IP55: protected against dust (partially) and water jets. Suitable for terraces exposed to sideways rain, but still ideally under a roof cover.

Mounting height and tilt angle – where exactly to install the infrared heater?
The mounting height directly affects how large an area the infrared heater will cover and how warm a given spot will feel. General rules:
- Height 1.8 – 2.2 m: intense heat in a small zone, suitable for fixed seating (café table, garden bench).

Infrared heaters emit intense heat and require safety distances from flammable materials to be observed. This is even more important outdoors, since the surroundings contain more flammable items – wooden pergola structures, parasols, canopies, fabric screens, dry vegetation.
Basic safety distances that must be observed:
- From the roof/ceiling structure (wood, wood-plastic composite boards): minimum 50 cm, recommended 80 cm or more.
- From side walls made of flammable material: minimum 30 cm.
- From fabric screens, canopies, parasols: minimum 80 cm, ideally 120 cm – fabrics can ignite under prolonged heating above 200 °C.
- From tables, chairs, seat cushions: minimum 50 cm.

A real-life warning: a customer had a pergola with a retractable canopy that wasn't retracted while the infrared heater was in use. The canopy was only 40 cm away from the unit. After an hour of operation, the canopy began to melt. The damage was material, but it could have been much worse. Infrared heaters up to 2,000 W can be connected to a standard 230 V/16 A outlet. A regular household extension cord with thin conductors (1.5 mm²) is unsuitable for 2,000 W and above – it may overheat. Arranging multiple infrared heaters on a larger terrace
For terraces larger than 10 – 12 m², a single infrared heater is not enough – neither in terms of output nor even coverage. Proper placement of multiple units ensures comfortable warmth without hot and cold spots.
Basic placement rules:
- Position the infrared heaters so their coverage zones overlap slightly – this eliminates cold spots.
- For long, narrow terraces (e.g. 3 × 8 m), it's better to place several weaker units in a row than two strong ones at the ends.

Is an infrared heater on a terrace safe for children and pets?
