Chrome: why it is still the most popular and what really harms it

A chrome surface has been present in bathrooms for decades – and not without reason. Classic shiny chrome is the result of electroplating, where a layer of chrome metal is electrolytically applied to a pre-prepared surface. The result is hard, smooth, relatively durable and visually neutral – it fits with white sanitary ware, gray tiles and wooden elements.

In terms of durability, chrome is really an interesting material. The hardness of the chrome layer is around 800–1000 HV (Vickers hardness), which is significantly more than, for example, the nickel base. This means that common scratches from rings or soap dishes should be handled by the surface without significant damage. Problems arise when the layer is not continuous – microcracks or areas with a thinner layer are gateways for moisture and corrosion.

In practice: a Viking chrome tap will last very long with normal care – I am talking about 10 or more years without visible deterioration. I have seen bathrooms where chrome taps have been in service for 15 years and looked almost new, because the owners regularly wiped off water droplets and avoided aggressive cleaning agents. On the other hand, bathrooms where the taps were scrubbed daily with abrasive sponges or where acidic cleaners (for example, for limescale) were used showed significant dulling and corrosion in some areas already after 3–4 years.

What really harms chrome

  • Acids and acidic cleaners: Vinegar, highly concentrated citric acid and commercial descaling agents with HCl (hydrochloric acid) can literally "eat" chrome. Never spray such preparations directly onto the tap and do not let them act for a long time.
  • Abrasive agents: Sand, rough sponges, powder cleaners – all of these scratch and dull the chrome surface. After abrasive cleaning, microscratches remain, which trap dirt and limescale.
  • Sodium chloride (salt) in high concentration: Salt water or bath salts are risky for chrome if they remain on the surface for a long time.
  • Mechanical impacts: Although chrome is hard, it can crack under strong impact (e.g. a falling sponge), and corrosion can start under the crack.

Black taps are currently a trend that is not fading – and for a good reason. Matte or glossy black color gives the bathroom an industrial, minimalist or luxurious character, contrasts beautifully with white sanitary ware or light tiles, and visually works well in bathrooms with wooden elements. What customers usually do not know, however, is that not all black taps are the same and the production method of the black surface significantly affects its durability.

PVD black vs. lacquered black: a crucial difference

There are basically two technologies for black surface finishes. The first – and higher quality – is PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition), i.e. physical vapor deposition. In this method, the material (titanium, zirconium or other metals) is evaporated under vacuum conditions and deposited on the tap surface as an extremely thin, yet extremely hard and continuous layer. A PVD layer has a hardness of up to 2000–2500 HV, which is significantly higher than any electroplated finish. The result is a black color that is highly resistant to both chemical and mechanical stress.

The second option is lacquered black finish – essentially a special lacquer applied to a prepared surface. It is cheaper to produce, and visually it may look identical to PVD, but its durability is incomparable. The lacquer peels, cracks and flakes over time – especially under temperature fluctuations and mechanical stress. These taps are mostly found in the lowest price segment.

What visibly damages a black tap and why it is not noticeable on chrome

This is the point where customers often encounter an unpleasant surprise: a black tap is much more susceptible to visible limescale and fingerprint marks. On a glossy chrome surface, water droplets after drying leave white deposits, but they are relatively inconspicuous. On a black tap – whether matte or glossy – white stains from limescale and fingerprint marks are immediately visible and visually disturbing.

This means in practice that the owner of a black tap must either accept that the tap will look "dirtier" between cleanings or must wipe the tap after every use. Gold surface finish: when it makes sense and what you need to know

A gold tap is less common in bathrooms than chrome or black, but it has a stable group of customers – especially in classic, luxurious or historically inspired bathrooms. A gold or brass finish can be achieved in several ways: electroplated gold (a thin layer of gold or a gold alloy applied by electrolysis), PVD gold (a titanium-nitride layer that has a golden hue), or a surface finish that mimics brass.

Real electroplated gold with sufficient thickness (at least 0.5–1 microns of pure gold) is durable and stable, but expensive – such taps are in the luxury segment. More common is PVD gold finish, where a golden hue is achieved by a titanium nitride (TiN) layer. This layer has similar properties to PVD black – high hardness, chemical resistance, but also a tendency to show fingerprints and limescale.

Specific risks of gold finish in the bathroom

Water hardness and its impact on different surfaces

One factor that is systematically underestimated when choosing tap surface finishes is water hardness in a given area. In Slovakia, water hardness varies significantly from region to region – in some areas the water is very soft (less than 10 °dH), while in others it reaches 25–30 °dH, which is extremely hard water with a high content of calcium and magnesium salts.

Hard water = intense limescale formation = more problems with surface finishes. This applies to all surfaces, but not equally:

  • Chrome: Limescale is visible, but it can be relatively easily removed after settling with a mild descaling agent or diluted vinegar (short-term application only, not long-term!). Long-term limescale deposits under the tap at the base are problematic – they damage the surface.
  • Black PVD: Limescale is very visible, but the PVD layer is chemically more resistant, so careful descaling does not cause as much damage. The issue is more visual – a white coating on a black surface is aesthetically unpleasant.
  • Gold PVD: Similar to black PVD – limescale stands out, but the layer itself is durable. Be careful that descaling agents are not too aggressive.

If you live in an area with very hard water and are considering a black or gold tap, consider installing a water softener or at least a water filter. Not only the tap, but the whole bathroom will thank you – less limescale on the floor, ceramic surfaces, and shower doors.

Black PVD taps are ideal for customers who really care about the design of their bathroom, have enough patience for regular maintenance, and live in an area with softer water or have a water softener. In luxurious bathrooms and design-oriented interiors, a black tap looks amazing – but only if it is clean.

Gold finish is for demanding customers with a clear vision of the interior. If you have a bathroom in an Art Deco style, a classic English bathroom, or a luxurious interior with gold accents, a gold tap is a logical choice. It requires the same care as black PVD, but is also more sensitive to color tones and combinations.

Surface durability over time: what to expect after 5 and 10 years

This is a question that customers rarely ask, but it should be one of the first – especially when investing in a bathroom renovation, where taps are not replaced every year.

This is not a defect, but natural surface aging.

With gold PVD or gold galvanic, it depends on the thickness of the layer and the quality of production. A thin gold layer (under 0.3 microns) may show the first signs of wear after 3–5 years in exposed areas. A thicker layer or ceramic PVD gold (TiN) will last much longer. These are the tips I give to customers after every purchase – and they really work:

  • Always wipe the tap after using the shower or bathtub. Five seconds with a microfiber cloth will extend the surface life by years. This applies to all finishes, but it is practically essential for black and gold.
  • Never use abrasive sponges or powders. Even "mild" abrasives (the white side of a dish sponge) scratch PVD layers and dull chrome.
  • Avoid products with chlorides and acids. Toilet cleaners, descalers with HCl, undiluted vinegar – these are the killers of surface finishes.
  • Use diluted vinegar (1:5 with water) or citric acid for limescale. Let it sit for a maximum of 10–15 minutes, then rinse and wipe. Never leave an acidic solution on overnight.
  • Apply a thin layer of wax or a special protective product to the tap surface once a year. This works as a barrier against limescale and fingerprint marks – water beads off the surface and does not settle as quickly.
  • Check the sealing at the base of the tap. If water runs under the tap, limescale and moisture will damage the surface exactly where you don’t see it – and the problem will show up as corrosion years later.

Can I use vinegar to remove limescale from a black PVD tap?

Yes, but carefully. Diluted vinegar (1 part vinegar to 5–6 parts water) is relatively safe for short-term contact – apply it to a cloth, gently rub the affected area, and immediately rinse with warm water, then dry thoroughly.
