Vaillant uniSTOR VIH RW 200 is a stationary indirect hot water storage tank with a 200-liter class volume (actual nominal content 193 l), specially designed for combination with air/water heat pumps of the Vaillant aroTHERM VWL 55-115 series. The tank prepares hot water in the household separately from the heating circuit - thanks to a smooth-tube heat exchanger with a large heat transfer surface, it is optimized precisely for the lower heating water temperatures typical of heat pump operation, and despite this, it achieves sufficient hot water comfort for a typical household.
Why an indirect storage tank for a heat pump
The heat pump heats the heating (and at the same time also the domestic) water to lower temperatures than is typical for gas boilers - this is energy efficient, as the efficiency of the heat pump decreases with increasing required output temperature. In order for the tank to be able to effectively transfer heat to the domestic water even at a lower temperature difference, it needs a heat exchanger with a significantly larger heat transfer surface than those of standard boiler tanks. The uniSTOR VIH RW 200 has exactly such a smooth-tube heat exchanger with an area of 1.81 m², which ensures rapid and efficient heat transfer from the heating (primary) circuit of the heat pump to the domestic (secondary) water in the tank, even at typically lower output temperatures of the heat pump.

Construction and materials
The tank body is made of steel with an internal vitrified (enamelled) surface that protects against corrosion and ensures the hygienic quality of stored domestic water. As an additional anti-corrosion protection, a magnesium protective anode is used, which is part of the tank and is checked and replaced if necessary during regular service. The outer shell consists of high-quality thermal insulation that minimizes the tank's standby heat losses (1.37 kWh/24 h) even when hot water is not being drawn.
Installation
uniSTOR VIH RW 200 is a stationary (floor-standing) tank with a footprint of approximately 600 × 600 mm and a height of 1 340 mm - when designing the technical room, it is therefore necessary to also consider the turning dimension of 1 440 mm, which determines the minimum space required for the tank's placement during installation (e.g., when transporting through doors or during installation). The tank is connected to the Vaillant aroTHERM VWL 55-115 heat pump via the heating circuit (connections R 1") and to the domestic hot water distribution in the house (connections R 1" for cold/hot water, R 3/4" for possible circulation).
Installation, connection, and commissioning must be carried out exclusively by a qualified installation company authorized for the installation of heating technology and heat pumps, in accordance with the Vaillant installation and service manual. Part of the commissioning is also the setting of the heat pump to an optimal operating mode in combination with the tank (e.g., disinfection/anti-legionella cycle, heating schedule according to the electricity tariff and so on).

Common questions
Is the tank suitable for a larger household?
Thanks to a single withdrawal capacity of 274 l and a volume of 193 l, the tank is suitable for a typical family household. Precise dimensioning is recommended to be discussed with a designer according to the number of people and habits of hot water withdrawal (e.g., bathtub vs. shower, simultaneous withdrawal in multiple bathrooms, etc.).
Why does the tank for a heat pump have a larger heat exchanger than a classic tank for a boiler?
Because the heat pump operates with lower output temperatures of the heating water than a gas boiler. A larger heat transfer surface (1.81 m²) compensates for the lower temperature difference and ensures sufficiently rapid heating of domestic water even at this lower temperature difference.
How often should the magnesium anode be checked?
Checking and, if necessary, replacing the protective anode is part of the regular annual service of the tank - it is carried out by an authorized service/installation company during the service inspection of the entire system.
Can the tank be used with a heat source other than a heat pump?
The tank is optimized for lower temperatures typical of heat pumps, but thanks to the large heat exchanger surface, it works reliably in combination with a gas condensing boiler or solar systems, provided it corresponds to the designed hydraulic scheme.
Hydraulic connection with hot water tank and buffer
In a typical configuration of a family house with the aroTHERM VWL 55-115 heat pump, a separate buffer (accumulation) tank of the VPS R series is often installed alongside the hot water tank uniSTOR VIH RW 200, which serves exclusively for the heating circuit. Dividing the tasks between two separate tanks - one for hot domestic water (uniSTOR VIH RW 200) and the other for heating water accumulation (VPS R 100/1 M or VPS R 200/1 B) - is a common and recommended solution, as it allows independent optimization of the operation of both circuits: the hot water tank is heated preferentially and quickly to the desired temperature, while the buffer tank stabilizes the operation of the heat pump during the heating season.
Switching between hot water heating and heating in such a configuration is ensured by the heat pump regulation using a switching (three-way) valve - the system automatically prioritizes the heating of the hot water tank according to the set priority and then returns to heating via the buffer tank.
Prevention of legionella growth
Part of the proper operation of any hot domestic water tank, including the uniSTOR VIH RW 200, is also a regular thermal disinfection (anti-legionella) cycle, in which the water in the tank is periodically heated to a higher temperature (usually above 60 °C) in order to eliminate any possible occurrence of legionella bacteria in the hot water distribution system. This function can be programmed directly in the Vaillant heat pump regulation - we recommend setting and frequency of the cycle to be discussed with the installation company in accordance with current hygiene regulations and manufacturer recommendations, as the maximum temperature of domestic water in this tank is 95 °C.
Comparison with larger models of the uniSTOR VIH RW series
Alongside the 200-liter class model, Vaillant also offers larger volume variants in the uniSTOR VIH RW series (for example, the 300-liter class), intended for larger households or buildings with higher simultaneous hot water withdrawal in multiple bathrooms. The construction principle of the large-area smooth-tube heat exchanger remains the same for all sizes, only the tank volume, dimensions, and weight differ. When selecting the tank size, we recommend considering the number of people in the household, the number of hot water withdrawal points, and usage habits (for example, frequent bathtub filling significantly increases the requirements for single withdrawal capacity).
