Product detailed description

Vaillant electric air pre-heater 1000 W for recoVAIR 260/4

The electric air pre-heater (manufacturer code 0020180800) is genuine accessory for the Vaillant recoVAIR VAR 260/4 heat recovery unit - a medium-power model of the recoVAIR /4 generation range with a maximum air flow of up to 260 m³/h, suitable especially for family houses with medium air flow requirements. It is an electric heating element (register) with a power of 1,000 W, which is installed directly in the fresh air duct, before it enters the unit's cross-counterflow heat exchanger. Its purpose is not to heat the living spaces of the house, but to protect the heat exchanger itself against freezing at low outdoor temperatures and to allow the unit to operate reliably even during freezing winter days without forced defrosting pauses.

As with the larger VAR 360/4 model, without freeze protection, ice could form in the cold part of the exchanger at low outdoor temperatures, gradually narrowing its channels and reducing air flow. The pre-heater prevents this by slightly warming the incoming outdoor air before it enters the exchanger, with the entire process controlled automatically by the unit's electronics based on the measured outdoor temperature - without any need for user intervention.

Why freeze protection is important specifically for the VAR 260/4 model

According to the manufacturer's technical documentation, the recoVAIR VAR 260/4 unit achieves a heat recovery efficiency of approximately 85% (EN 13141-7 methodology), which in practice results in significantly lower ventilation heat losses compared to conventional window opening. However, for the unit to maintain this high efficiency during winter, the heat exchanger must simultaneously remove moisture from the warm exhaust air in the form of condensate. When the outdoor temperature drops below approximately -10 to -15 °C, this condensate risks turning to ice in the colder part of the exchanger, narrowing the channels and reducing air flow.

The 1,000 W electric pre-heater prevents this by raising the temperature of the incoming outdoor air to a safe level before it enters the exchanger. The unit's control electronics measure the current outdoor temperature and switch on the pre-heater only when actually necessary, optimizing electricity consumption compared to continuous operation of the heating element.

Installation and connection

The pre-heater is installed directly into the structure of the recoVAIR VAR 260/4 unit or into the fresh air supply duct just before the unit, exactly according to the procedure in the manufacturer's installation manual. The electrical connection (230 V AC power supply and connection to the control electronics for automatic switching based on outdoor temperature) must be carried out in accordance with applicable electrical standards. We recommend entrusting the installation to a trained technician or an authorized Vaillant service partner, as incorrect fixing of the heating element in the airflow or faulty electrical wiring could jeopardize operational safety or reduce the lifespan of other unit components.

As with other recoVAIR models, we also recommend considering installation of the pre-heater already during the initial installation of the unit, especially in locations with regular winter frosts below -10 °C. Additional installation after the unit has been put into operation is possible, but requires re-intervention in the already installed unit structure and its electrical wiring.

Compatibility

This 1,000 W pre-heater is intended exclusively for the recoVAIR VAR 260/4 model, including its variant with an enthalpy heat exchanger (designation "E"). For the more powerful VAR 360/4 model, we offer a separate 1,500 W pre-heater (code 0020180799), and for the smaller VAR 150/4 model a 600 W pre-heater (code 0020180801) - the power and mechanical dimensions of the element are always dimensioned exactly to the air flow of the specific unit, so the components cannot be interchanged between models.

The pre-heater can be freely combined with other accessories for the VAR 260/4 unit - for example the CO2 sensor VAZ CO/1, the VAZ S4/1 controller, the higher F9/G4 filtration class, the enthalpy heat exchanger, or the self-sealing condensate siphon, as each of these components addresses a different functional area of the system.

Comparison of pre-heaters in the recoVAIR /4 range

Unit modelMax. air flowPre-heater powerOrder number

recoVAIR VAR 360/4360 m³/h1,500 W0020180799

The VAR 260/4 model represents the mid-range category of the recoVAIR /4 range both in terms of maximum air flow and required pre-heater power - it is a suitable choice for family houses with medium living space, where the smaller VAR 150/4 model might not be sufficient in capacity, but the full power of the largest VAR 360/4 model is not yet needed.

When a pre-heater is really necessary

We recommend considering the electric pre-heater especially for installations in locations with regular occurrence of outdoor temperatures below -10 to -15 °C in winter, as well as in buildings with higher indoor air humidity (households with a larger number of occupants, a bathroom with a bathtub, or a laundry drying room), where the amount of water vapor in the exhaust air is higher and the risk of condensate formation in the exchanger increases accordingly. Rough estimate of operating costs: since the pre-heater operates intermittently, only when there is actual risk of freezing, its real average consumption during the heating season is significantly lower than the rated power of 1,000 W - the exact value depends on the climatic region and the number of frosty days in the season.

Maintenance and care

The electric pre-heater has no moving mechanical parts and requires no special maintenance from the user during normal operation - its switching is fully controlled by the recoVAIR unit's electronics based on the measured outdoor temperature. As part of the regular annual service of the unit (usually carried out together with filter replacement), we recommend having technicians check the functionality and electrical connection of the pre-heater, ideally before the start of the heating season. Neglected replacement of the unit's inlet filters may also indirectly affect the thermal balance around the pre-heater, so we recommend adhering to filtration service intervals as well.

Why choose this pre-heater

This electric pre-heater is a genuine accessory directly from the manufacturer of the recoVAIR VAR 260/4 unit, developed and tested to precisely match the performance parameters and dimensions of the given unit. It therefore guarantees correct mechanical compatibility, trouble-free communication with the control electronics, and the preservation of warranty conditions for the entire controlled ventilation system with heat recovery - unlike non-original or universal third-party solutions, which lack this certainty.

Impact on acoustic comfort and smooth operation

In addition to freeze protection, the electric pre-heater also has an indirect but noticeable effect on the smoothness of operation of the entire controlled ventilation system. Units without a pre-heater usually temporarily reduce fan power or switch to forced defrosting cycles when there is a risk of exchanger freezing, during which the character of air flow and the noise level of the unit change. With a pre-heater, such fluctuations practically do not occur, and the VAR 260/4 unit can operate smoothly at the set power level even during freezing days, without unexpected changes in noise or ventilation intensity.

Recommendations for designers and installation companies

When designing a controlled ventilation system with the VAR 260/4 unit, we recommend taking the electric pre-heater into account already at the design stage of the building's electrical installation - it is necessary to plan for a 230 V AC power supply to the unit's installation location and correct dimensioning of the circuit protection according to the 1,000 W power consumption. We also recommend recording information about the installed pre-heater in the project documentation for future service technicians, so that they can verify the functionality of this system component during regular annual maintenance. In locations with more extreme winter conditions, we recommend consulting a Vaillant representative or our technical department regarding the optimal setting of the pre-heater's switching threshold temperature.

Relation to other optional components of the VAR 260/4 unit

Due to its medium air flow, the VAR 260/4 model is often combined with other optional recoVAIR components - for example an enthalpy heat exchanger (improves winter comfort by transferring some of the moisture from the exhaust air to the incoming air along with heat, preventing excessive air drying during the heating season), a higher F9/G4 filtration class for households in urban or otherwise burdened environments, or a self-sealing condensate siphon for maintenance-free condensate drainage. The electric pre-heater can be freely combined with all of the above components, as each addresses a different functional area of the controlled ventilation system.

Frequently asked questions

Does the pre-heater heat rooms?

No, its purpose is to protect the recoVAIR unit's heat exchanger against freezing at low outdoor temperatures, not to heat living spaces.

Which recoVAIR model is this pre-heater intended for?

Exclusively for the VAR 260/4 model (including the "E" variant with enthalpy exchanger). Separate pre-heaters with different power ratings (600 W and 1,500 W respectively) are available for the VAR 150/4 and VAR 360/4.

How is the pre-heater controlled?

Automatically, by the unit's control electronics, which measure the outdoor temperature and switch the heating element on or off as needed.

Is the pre-heater a mandatory part of every installation?

No, but it is recommended especially in areas with regular winter frosts below -10 to -15 °C and higher indoor air humidity.

Can the pre-heater be installed additionally later?

Yes, but we recommend entrusting this modification to a trained technician, as it involves intervention in the unit's air duct system and electrical wiring.

What is the supply voltage?

The heating element is powered by 230 V AC voltage, connected to the unit's electrical installation according to the manufacturer's installation manual.

What is the warranty on this pre-heater?

We provide a standard 2-year warranty, the same as for other accessories and parts for Vaillant recoVAIR units.

Does the pre-heater affect the unit's noise level?

Not directly - the noise level of the VAR 260/4 unit (45-59 dB(A) depending on power level) is mainly determined by fan speed. The pre-heater, on the other hand, contributes to smoother operation without fluctuations caused by forced defrosting, which may indirectly also have a positive effect on perceived acoustic comfort.

Do I need to modify my home's electrical installation when ordering a pre-heater?

Yes, it is necessary to plan for a 230 V AC power supply to the unit and correct dimensioning of the circuit protection according to the 1,000 W power consumption - we recommend including this requirement in the building's electrical installation project already.
