Product detailed description

Vaillant assembly – horizontal flue gas duct 0.75 m + 87° inspection elbow – solution with inspection and cleaning access

This assembly (code 0020219516) is a variant of the combination of a straight flue gas duct section with a length of 0.75 m and an elbow with an 87° change of direction, whereby the key difference compared to the basic (non-inspection) version is that the elbow in this assembly is equipped with an inspection (control) opening allowing access to the inside of the flue gas path without the need to disassemble the entire route. This feature makes the assembly a suitable choice wherever it is necessary to provide an accessible point for regular inspection, cleaning, or measurement of flue gas parameters as part of the mandatory chimney sweep inspection.

Why inspection access in the flue gas path is important

Current legislation governing the operation of chimneys and flue gas paths requires regular inspection and cleaning of the flue gas path by an authorized person (chimney sweep), with the inspection interval depending on the type of fuel, the output of the source, and the mode of operation. In condensing boilers, where condensate forms in the flue gas path, this inspection is even more important, as it is necessary to verify not only the patency of the route but also the proper drainage of condensate and the overall technical condition of the interior surfaces of the pipe. Without an inspection opening at an accessible point along the route, the chimney sweep would have to dismantle entire sections of pipe during the inspection, which is more time-consuming and technically demanding, and repeated disassembly and reassembly also increases the risk of damage to the joints.

Design of the inspection elbow

The inspection elbow is structurally identical to a standard elbow with an angle of 87°, but it is additionally equipped with a removable cover (lid) on one side of the elbow body, which, once removed, provides a direct view and physical access to the inside of the flue duct route at this point. The cover is sealed so that no flue gas leakage or false air intake occurs at this point during normal operation, while also allowing quick and easy opening when inspection is needed, without the need for special tools.

When to choose this assembly instead of the standard one

  • Longer or more complex flue duct routes – for routes with multiple changes of direction or a greater overall length, it is advisable to have at least one inspection point accessible for checking without the need to dismantle the entire route,
  • Requirement of the local chimney sweep or inspection technician – some chimney sweeps, when taking over a new installation for regular maintenance, require at least one inspection access point along the route in order to perform checks efficiently,
  • Routes with reduced accessibility to other parts of the piping – for example, if most of the route is run in a suspended ceiling, shaft, or otherwise hard-to-reach space, where the inspection point at the boiler room or at the wall penetration is the only practically accessible inspection location,
  • Preventive solution when designing a new building – even where the current layout does not strictly require inspection access, this option can be a suitable preventive investment for easier future servicing.

Installation and placement along the route

The inspection elbow should be placed at a point along the route that will remain permanently accessible after construction is completed – that is, not hidden behind a fixed cladding structure, furniture, or other obstacle that would prevent it from being opened in the future. It is recommended to place it as close as possible to the boiler outlet or at another easily accessible point in the utility room, where the chimney sweep and the service technician have free access without having to move other equipment or furniture.

The installation procedure for this component does not differ from the installation of a standard elbow – the push-fit joints on both sides are connected in the same way, while maintaining the correct orientation to ensure the required slope of the route for condensate drainage.

Compatibility

This assembly is designed for concentric flue gas ducts with a diameter of 80/125 mm used with Vaillant condensing gas boilers of the ecoTEC, ecoTEC plus, ecoTEC exclusiv, and turboTEC series. As with the basic assembly, we recommend verifying the diameter compatibility with the specific boiler model according to its technical documentation before ordering.

Advantages over adding a separate inspection piece later

An alternative to this assembly would be to use the basic (non-inspection) assembly in combination with a separate inspection piece installed elsewhere along the route. However, this assembly offers the advantage of integrating the inspection function directly into the elbow, which is needed anyway for the change of direction of the route – it therefore requires no additional space or extra joint compared to the standard solution, thus simplifying installation while maintaining full functionality of the inspection access.

Material and durability

Like other components of the Vaillant flue gas duct system, the inspection elbow is made of materials resistant to acidic condensate and the operating temperatures of flue gases from condensing technology. The sealing system of the inspection opening cover is designed to retain this resistance and tightness even after repeated opening and closing over many years of regular inspections.

Inspection procedure through this opening

When performing a regular inspection, the chimney sweep or service technician removes the inspection opening cover, visually checks the internal condition of the pipe in the accessible area (deposits, corrosion, patency), possibly takes the necessary flue gas parameter measurements or condensate sample, and after completing the check, closes the cover securely, reliably, and perfectly tightly, and secures it back in its original position. This procedure is significantly faster and less invasive than dismantling entire sections of pipe, which would be necessary without an inspection access point along the route.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Is the inspection assembly mandatory for every installation?
Not automatically for every installation, but for certain route configurations (longer, more complex, or with limited access to other parts of the pipe), inspection access may be required by the local chimney sweep or recommended by the designer as part of good practice.

Can the inspection cover be opened repeatedly without losing tightness?
Yes, the cover is designed for repeated opening and closing during regular inspections throughout the expected service life of the component, without loss of sealing properties when handled correctly.

Is the price of this assembly higher than the standard (non-inspection) version, and why?
Yes, the inspection version is generally more expensive due to the more complex design with a removable sealed cover, but this investment pays off especially on routes where inspection access makes future regular servicing and mandatory inspections easier and cheaper.

Who decides whether the inspection version is needed for a given installation?
The need for inspection access is usually decided by the flue gas path designer in cooperation with the installation company, and the recommendations of the locally responsible chimney sweep, who will later perform the regular mandatory inspections of the installation, should also be taken into account.

Can I use the inspection elbow as a replacement for a standard elbow elsewhere in the route?
Yes, it functionally performs the same task of changing the direction of the route as a standard elbow, while additionally providing the possibility of inspection – so it can be used anywhere it is useful to have an accessible inspection point.

How often does the inspection opening need to be opened during operation?
The frequency corresponds to the interval of the mandatory inspection of the flue gas path set by applicable legislation according to the type and output of the source, usually as part of the annual service inspection or chimney inspection, and possibly at shorter intervals for more intensively operated sources according to the chimney sweep's recommendation.

Difference between the inspection elbow and a separate inspection piece of straight pipe

In addition to the inspection elbow, the Vaillant accessories range also offers separate inspection pieces in the form of a straight pipe section with an integrated inspection opening, intended for situations where a change of direction of the route is not needed at that point, but inspection access is. The choice between an inspection elbow and a separate straight inspection piece depends on the specific geometry of the route – if a change of direction is needed at that point anyway (as in the case of this assembly with the transition from the vertical boiler outlet to a horizontal route toward the facade), it is more practical and space-saving to choose the inspection version of the elbow directly, rather than a combination of a standard elbow and a separate straight inspection piece.

Effect of the inspection opening on system tightness and safety

Some customers worry that the presence of a removable cover may represent a potentially weaker point in terms of tightness compared to a sealed, non-detachable elbow. However, the design of the inspection cover is specifically developed with this aspect in mind – the sealing system of the cover is designed to provide the same level of tightness as a sealed fitting when properly closed, even after being opened and closed many times during regular inspections throughout the entire service life of the component. The key factor is simply the thorough and correct closing of the cover after each inspection, which is part of the standard procedure performed by a qualified person.

Case scenario – boiler room with limited access to the route

Let us imagine a typical situation in an apartment or a small family house, where the boiler is located in a kitchen unit or a narrow technical niche, and most of the flue gas duct route from the boiler to the facade runs in a suspended ceiling or behind fixed cladding for aesthetic reasons. In such a case, the section of the route immediately at the boiler outlet, i.e. exactly where this assembly with the inspection elbow is used, is often the only realistically accessible point for the chimney sweep performing a regular inspection. Choosing the inspection version of the elbow in such cases is not only suitable but practically essential to maintain the ability to carry out legally required inspections without having to interfere with the aesthetic cladding of the space.

Chimney sweeps' recommendations regarding the placement of inspection access

Chimney sweep organizations and inspection technicians, when advising on new installations, usually recommend placing at least one inspection access point as close as possible to the source (i.e. right at the boiler outlet), as this area of the route is typically the most prone to the accumulation of condensate and any deposits from the combustion process. At the same time, they recommend that the inspection access should not be the only inspection point for very long or complex routes with many changes of direction – in such cases, it may be advisable to add another inspection point closer to the outlet of the route from the building.

Summary

The Vaillant horizontal flue gas duct 0.75 m assembly with an 87° inspection elbow combines the practical function of changing the direction of a horizontal route with the possibility of quick and easy access to the inside of the flue gas path for regular inspection and cleaning. It represents a suitable choice for installations where inspection access is required by a chimney sweep, recommended by a designer, or required by a more complex route layout.

Design recommendations with an emphasis on future servicing

When designing the flue gas duct route, we recommend thinking ahead about who will inspect and clean the flue gas path in the future and how. Investing in the inspection version of the elbow already at the initial installation is generally more advantageous than modifying the route years later, when it turns out that access to a part of the pipe is insufficient for regular inspection. This consideration is particularly important for more complex routes with multiple changes of direction or routes running through hard-to-reach areas of the building.

Relation to the flue gas path inspection log

It is advisable to record the location and type of inspection access in the flue gas path inspection log kept by the chimney sweep during regular inspections. This record makes orientation easier at every subsequent inspection, especially if the inspection is carried out in the future by a different person or company than the one familiar with the original installation, and it prevents unnecessary searching for a suitable access point at every visit by a technician or chimney sweep.

Effect on installation time compared to the standard assembly

In terms of installation time itself, this assembly is practically no different from the standard (non-inspection) version – the push-fit joints are connected in the same way, and the presence of the inspection cover does not require any additional installation step during the initial installation. The difference becomes apparent only during future inspections, where the presence of this cover allows significantly faster and easier access to the inside of the route compared to a situation where the push-fit joints of the surrounding components would need to be disassembled.

Comparison of inspection costs with and without inspection access

In the long run, investing in the inspection version of the elbow saves time and costs at every regular inspection of the flue gas path throughout the entire service life of the boiler, as there is no need for partial dismantling of the pipe at every chimney sweep visit. Given the estimated service life of a condensing boiler of 15 to 20 years and an annual frequency of mandatory inspections, this saving represents a significantly higher total value than the difference in purchase price between the standard and inspection versions of the assembly.

Recommendation for installation companies when calculating a quote

We recommend that installation companies, when preparing a price quote for a customer, always consider whether the standard or inspection version of this assembly better suits the specific installation layout, and clearly explain this difference to the customer, including the reasons why the inspection version, despite a slightly higher purchase price, may ultimately be the more advantageous choice. Transparent communication of this technical detail already at the quotation stage prevents potential misunderstandings during later servicing, when the customer discovers that access to the flue gas path is limited.

Relation to the type of heated building

The choice between the standard and inspection version of the assembly may also depend on the type of building – in apartment units and smaller spaces, where every meter of space is valuable and the flue gas duct route is often routed as short and hidden as possible, the inspection access at the boiler is usually the only realistically accessible inspection point. In larger family houses with a more spacious utility room, on the other hand, several accessible points along the route may be available even without a specialized inspection fitting, which can influence the investor's decision when choosing a specific version of the assembly.

Consideration for commercial and residential operations – in larger apartment buildings, where a single management company operates a shared boiler room or multiple boiler rooms, the inspection version of the assembly is almost always recommended, as it makes work easier for the service organization during mass regular inspections of a larger number of units at once, which ultimately also reduces the overall costs of service fees charged to the owners' association or building manager.
