  • The customer is renovating the bathroom – here there is more room, the customer can adapt the position of the piping, but they still need to know what values to set when embedding the pipes into the wall.
  • The customer is installing a tap in a new apartment or house – seemingly the easiest case, but even here it happens that the builder makes the piping "by eye" and the tap fits only with great effort.

In all three cases, the rule applies: the more you know about the dimensions in advance, the fewer problems you will have during the actual installation.

Types of Vittoria tap connections – threads, adapters and supply hoses

Vittoria taps are connected to the water supply through threaded connections. It is a standardized system based on European standards, so you do not encounter exotic exceptions during standard installation. Despite this, there are several important details that need to be known.

G 1/2" threads – the absolute standard for basin taps

The vast majority of Vittoria basin taps use connections with an external G 1/2" thread (BSP – British Standard Pipe). This is a thread with a diameter of about 20.9 mm and a pitch of 14 threads per inch. Standard supply hoses are screwed onto this thread, which have the other end either the same thread or a thread for screwing onto the valve (also usually G 1/2").

Important detail: G 1/2" is a nominal dimension, not the actual thread diameter. The designation comes from the history of the British pipe system and is referred to by all manufacturers including Vittoria during standard purchase.

G 3/4" connections – for bath taps and larger flow rates

Vittoria bath taps, or taps with a larger water flow, may have G 3/4" connections. These are physically larger (external thread diameter about 26.4 mm) and allow a larger water flow. When installing a bath tap, always check what thread your existing piping has – and if it is G 1/2", a reducing piece or piping modification is required.

Corner valves and straight valves – what is mounted at the tap

At the end of the piping in the wall is a thread (external or internal G 1/2" or G 3/4"). A shut-off valve is screwed onto this thread – most often a corner valve (90° elbow, when the piping comes out of the wall horizontally) or a straight valve (when the piping comes out of the wall or floor vertically upwards). A corner valve is standard for most built-in bathroom piping in the wall. A straight valve is used less often, for example, with embedded piping under the floor.

A hose connection comes out of the corner valve leading to the tap. The length of this hose must correspond to the distance between the valve and the lower part of the tap – therefore, it is important to measure this before buying the tap or at least before ordering the hoses.

Problems arise in older buildings where the piping was either not installed according to this standard (I have encountered spacing of 120 mm, 130 mm, or even 100 mm in apartments from the 50s–70s), or where the builder installed the piping "rough-in" and the distance deviated from 150 mm by 10–20 mm. In such cases, there are two solutions: flexible hoses with greater stiffness and a more flexible joint (which tolerate a larger deviation), or a physical reconstruction of the angle valves using angled extensions.

When the spacing doesn't match – practical procedure

If you find that your spacing differs from 150 mm, there is no need to panic. The procedure is as follows:

  • Measure the actual center-to-center distance of the angle valves (or shut-off valves).
  • Check whether the valves are oriented correctly (both should point in the same direction, usually perpendicular to the wall).
  • If the difference is within 20–25 mm from 150 mm, standard flexible hoses usually handle it.
  • If the difference is greater or the piping is completely different, a piping reconstruction or the use of a special transition piece is required.

Spout height – why it is one of the most important parameters

Spout height (in English, "spout height") is the distance from the mounting plane of the basin (sink or wall) to the end of the spout, i.e., the place where the water flows out. This parameter affects comfort, aesthetics, and also practical functionality – a spout that is too low causes water to splash on the hands before it reaches the sink, while a spout that is too high can cause water to splash outside the sink.

Standard Vittoria basin taps with stand mounting have a spout height in the range of 100–160 mm. A typical value for a standard sink is around 120–140 mm. This height is sufficient for a standard sink with a basin depth of 150–180 mm – the water falls into the center of the sink and does not splash.

If you have a shallow sink (for example, a countertop or modern ultra-thin ceramic sink with a basin depth of only 80–100 mm), the standard spout height may be too high and the water will splash. In such cases, a tap with a lower spout height (around 80–100 mm) or with an adjustable spout is suitable.

Conversely, for deep sinks (laboratory, kitchen, or large-format sinks), a tap with a higher spout height (160–200 mm or more) is suitable so that the spout is above the top edge of the sink.

Historically, the spout height for kitchen taps was around 150–200 mm, while modern high kitchen taps reach spout heights of 200–300 mm. For a kitchen sink, the length and flexibility of the spout are also important.

Shower and bathtub taps are mounted on the wall or on the edge of the bathtub and their outlet valve directs water down into the bathtub. A different value is key here – the mounting height of the tap above the top edge of the bathtub. The recommended mounting height for a wall-mounted bathtub tap is 150–200 mm above the top edge of the bathtub. If the tap is mounted too low, water reaches the tap during filling, which is unhygienic and can damage the tap due to long-term immersion.

Mounting height of the tap from the floor – important for wall mounting

For wall-mounted shower and bathtub taps, not only the spout height is important, but also the overall mounting height of the tap from the floor. Recommended values are based on ergonomics and standards:

  • Sink tap – wall mounting: connections usually at a height of 300–500 mm from the floor (depends on the sink height), tap at a height of about 50–100 mm above the top edge of the sink
  • Shower tap: wall connections at a height of 1 000–1 200 mm from the floor (for an average adult user), shower drain (if combined) at a height of about 200 mm from the bottom of the shower area
  • Bathtub tap: connections at a height of about 700–900 mm from the floor (depends on the height of the bathtub edge), outlet valve at least 150 mm above the top edge of the bathtub
  • Kitchen sink tap: connections at a height of about 400–550 mm from the floor (depends on the height of the kitchen line and the under-sink cabinet)

These values are not absolute – each project may have different requirements. For example, a children's bathroom, a bathroom for the disabled, or a bathroom with atypical equipment may require different heights. Therefore, always carefully consider the equipment you plan to use before closing the wall (during renovation), and adjust the piping accordingly.

Mounting hole – dimensions of the hole in the sink or worktop

A stand-mounted tap (i.e., one that is mounted directly into the sink or onto the worktop) passes through a hole (mounting hole) in the sink or worktop. The standard diameter of this hole is 35 mm, or 32–38 mm. Vittoria taps are designed for this standard size.

Some sinks have one hole, others have three holes (for three-hole taps or combined sets: tap + soap dispenser + boiler tap). Therefore, always check how many holes your sink has and what their diameter is when purchasing a tap.

The thickness of the material at the mounting location is also important. Outlet – straight, swivel or pull-out? What affects usability

The spout (outlet) of the tap is another dimension that is often overlooked when choosing a tap. Its length and direction influence exactly where the water falls in the basin.

Spout length and reach

The length of the spout (from the axis of the tap body to the end of the spout) ranges from 80 mm for compact taps to 200 mm or more for kitchen or industrial types. For a standard bathroom basin, an ideal spout length is 100–140 mm, which ensures that the water falls into the center of the basin and not on the edge.

Too short a spout in a deep basin will cause the water to run down the side of the basin rather than directly down – which is uncomfortable and causes limescale on visible surfaces. On the other hand, a spout that is too long may extend too far into the basin, which is unsuitable for a shallow basin.

Swivel spout – when is it an advantage

Some Vittoria taps have a swivel spout, meaning the spout can be turned into various positions (for example, 120° left/right). This is advantageous for double basins (where one tap serves both basins), corner installations, or kitchen basins, where you need to reach different parts of the work surface.

Hot and cold water – which inlet is left and which is right?

This is one of the most classic sources of confusion. In the European standard, the following applies: the left inlet is for hot water (HW), the right inlet is for cold water (CW). This is valid when looking at the tap from the front.

The depth of the connection (from the surface of the wall to the axis of the outlet thread) must match the length of the connecting thread of the tap. Vittoria bathtub and shower taps have, in addition to water connections, also outputs for shower hoses and possibly for bathtub outlets. These outputs have standardized dimensions:

  • Thread for shower output: G 1/2" external (standard for shower hoses)
  • Thread for bathtub outlet: G 3/4" external or G 1/2", depending on the model
  • Length of shower hoses: standard 150 cm or 175 cm – for greater comfort, I recommend 175 cm or 200 cm

Practical scenarios from installation practice – what actually happens

Scenario 1: Replacing an old lever tap in a panel apartment

The customer orders a modern single-lever Vittoria tap to replace an old two-handle tap from the 80s. Problem: the old tap had a connection spacing of 120 mm, not 150 mm. The new tap has inlet hoses that technically tolerate a spacing of 110–170 mm, but at 120 mm, the hoses must be bent significantly – which is technically possible, but at an angle, it causes stress on the thread and a possible water leak over time.

Correct solution: replacement of corner valves with a shift of their position to 150 mm. If the wall is completely covered with tiles and removing the valves would mean breaking the tiles, another option is special extensions/offset adapters, which shift the valve outlet by the required 15 mm.

Scenario 2: New tap is too high for the basin

The customer bought a luxury model with a high spout (outlet height 170 mm) for a flat design basin with a basin depth of only 90 mm. Result: water is splashing all over the bathroom. Solution: replacement of the tap with a model with a lower outlet (around 100 mm) or replacement of the basin with a deeper model. Both options are costly – and the whole problem could have been avoided by simply measuring the depth of the basin before purchase.

Scenario 3: Shower tap mounted too low

The customer chose the position of the wall-mounted shower tap at a height of 800 mm from the floor – "because it seemed comfortable to him." After installation of the shower set, he found that the overhead shower was hanging too low and tall family members could not reach it. In addition, the shower tap was located below the level of the hands in a normal standing position. Relocating the plumbing would require work on the tiling. Lesson: always think about the installation height with regard to the height of all family members and the type of shower set.

Scenario 4: Installation into a thick marble countertop

The customer had their own marble countertop with a thickness of 60 mm.
