Water Filters: Y-filter, Angle Filter or Filter with Pressure Reduction – Which to Choose?

Water filtration in the household is one of the topics where customers most often get lost right from the start. They come to the store saying they "need a filter," but when you ask them exactly what they want to filter, where it will be installed, and what pressure they have in the house – most of them can't answer. And yet, the answers to these three questions determine whether you buy a Y-filter, an angle filter, or a filter combined with a pressure-reducing valve. This article is here to help you make the right decision right from the start, without unnecessary trial and error and returning goods.

We primarily focus on mechanical filtration – that is, the capture of impurities, sand, coarse mechanical particles, and corrosion products from the pipes. Not water softening, not chlorine or nitrate removal. These are topics for separate devices. This is about basic, yet extremely important, protection of the installation.

Why filter water in the household at all?

Public water supplies do deliver water treated to drinking standards, that's true. The problem, however, is not always in the water itself – the problem is in the pipes. If you have old galvanized pipes in your house, every pressure fluctuation or repair on the network will bring sediment, rust, sand, fragments of old coating, or weld scale into the system. These impurities are invisible to the naked eye, but they can damage the membrane of a pressure tank, clog a showerhead of a mixer, or scratch the seal of an angle valve within a few weeks.

In practice, I have seen cases where a customer bought a fifth electric mixer in three years – and all of them had the same problem: the seat of the tap was damaged by abrasive particles. A single properly placed filter at the entrance to the apartment would have been enough, and the mixers would have lasted ten times longer.

Filtration therefore has a protective function for:

  • mixers and fittings (especially ceramic discs and membrane taps)
  • pressure-reducing valves (impurities are the main cause of their failure)
  • pressure tanks and expansion vessels
  • washing machines, dishwashers and other appliances
  • shower heads and aerators of mixers
  • water consumption meters (water meters)

Types of filters – basic classification

There are several basic categories of filters for mechanical water cleaning on the market. Each has its own logic, place of use, and technical parameters. Let's look at them one by one.

Y-filter (straight filter)

The Y-filter gets its name from the shape of the body – when viewed from the side, it resembles the letter Y or a slanted branch. The body of the filter is straight (flow-through), and the filter insert (screen) is placed in a slanted outlet downward or to the side. This design has a fundamental advantage: the filter can be mounted on a straight pipe without changing the direction of flow, which minimizes pressure loss.

Y-filters are produced in a wide range of sizes from DN10 (3/8") up to large diameters DN50 (2") and more. In standard apartment and residential house installations, the most commonly used sizes are 3/4" and 1". For larger objects or entrance points of apartment buildings, 1 1/4", 1 1/2", or 2" are common.

Both are typical representatives of high-quality Y-filters for apartment buildings and distribution systems, where larger pipe dimensions are common. A brass body ensures long life even in environments with more aggressive water, and a stainless steel screen is resistant to corrosion and can be cleaned and reused several times.

The mesh of a Y-filter usually has a mesh size of 500 – 800 microns (standard coarse mesh) or 100 – 300 microns (finer capture). A coarser mesh causes less pressure loss, while a finer mesh better protects fittings but requires more frequent cleaning.

Angle filter

An angle filter differs from a Y-filter mainly in the shape of the body and the method of installation. The pipe enters from the bottom (or from the side) and exits vertically – so the filter simultaneously changes the direction of flow by 90 degrees and filters. It is essentially a combination of an angle valve and a filter chamber in one body.

Angle filters are most often installed directly in front of appliances – a washing machine, a dishwasher, under a sink in front of a lever mixer, or in front of a toilet cistern. They are usually small, compact, with an internal or external thread of 1/2" or 3/4", and most of them have an integrated shut-off valve (ball or gate valve). This is a big advantage for maintenance – without draining the entire circuit, it is sufficient to close the valve, unscrew the body of the filter, and clean the screen.

Corner filters are an ideal solution for bathroom and kitchen renovations, where every centimeter of space is valuable. Instead of a separate filter + elbow + valve, you have one compact body. Typical mesh sizes are 100–200 microns, which corresponds to fine capture of mechanical impurities.

Filter combined with pressure reducing valve

This is the third category and also the most complex one. It refers to devices that combine filtration and pressure reduction into one body or compact assembly. The purpose is clear: in practice, a filter and pressure reducing valve are almost always installed together – the filter must be installed before the valve (to protect it from impurities), so manufacturers simply combined them.

A typical installation at the entrance to a house or apartment looks like this: main shut-off valve → filter → pressure reducing valve → household distribution. A combination in one body simplifies it to one piece of equipment, saving space and installation time.

These valves are not filters directly, but every proper plumber knows that a filter must be installed before the pressure reducing valve as a mandatory protection – without it, the warranty period of the valve is practically meaningless.

Technical parameters that you need to understand

Filter size (diameter)

The most important parameter. The filter must match the size of the pipe it is installed on. In a standard apartment installation, these are DN15 (1/2") and DN20 (3/4"). In family houses at the entrance from the public water supply DN25 (1"). In apartment buildings at the riser or at the entrance to the house it can be DN32 (1 1/4") up to DN50 (2").

The rule is simple: the filter must not narrow the pipe. If you have DN20, use a DN20 filter. If for technical reasons you want to use a filter of a larger size (e.g. for lower pressure loss), that is fine – but then you need reducing couplings on both sides, which complicates the installation.

Mesh size (filtration fineness)

Meshes differ in the size of their holes, which is given in microns (µm) or in "mesh" (number of holes per inch). Approximate table:

In general, the finer the mesh = the better the protection, but also higher pressure loss and faster clogging. For protection of a standard household installation, a mesh of 200 – 400 µm is sufficient. For protection of expensive appliances or taps in areas with old steel piping, we choose 100 – 200 µm.

Maximum pressure and temperature

Filters are designed for certain maximum operating parameters. For cold water in an apartment installation, PN16 (16 bar) or PN25 is standard. A temperature up to +40 °C is standard for cold water. If you want to use a filter for hot water (e.g. before a boiler or tank), check the maximum temperature – many brass filters can withstand +90 °C and more, but plastic covers of filter chambers may be limited to +40 or +60 °C.

Where to place the filter exactly?

The installation location of the filter depends on what you want to protect and the structure of your installation. From practice, I see these typical scenarios:

Water supply to a house from a well or public water supply

According to standards, a larger Y-filter (DN25 or DN32) with a coarse mesh (500–800 µm) is required immediately after the main shut-off valve, before the water meter or pressure-reducing valve. It captures the coarsest particles—sand from the well, small stones, large fragments. A finer filter and pressure-reducing valve can follow this coarse filter.

In the case of a public water supply with fluctuating pressure above 4 bar, I recommend installing a pressure-reducing valve right after the coarse filter—for example, from atria.sk. Water supply to an apartment (apartment in an apartment building)

Apartment installations typically have DN15 (1/2") or DN20 (3/4"). An ideal solution at the apartment entrance after the shut-off valve is a compact filter DN20 with a fineness of 100–200 µm, or combined with a pressure-reducing valve if the pressure in the pump fluctuates (which is a common occurrence in older apartment buildings—measured 5–6 bar in lower floors and 2–3 bar in upper floors).

Before the washing machine, dishwasher, or water heater

A corner filter is an ideal solution here. It is mounted directly on the 1/2" wall connection, and the appliance is connected to the filter's output. Compact design, integrated shut-off valve for easy turning off during service, and a fine mesh (100–200 µm). Real-life example: a customer had a washing machine with a magnetic valve damaged three times in five years—each service told him the magnetic valve was clogged with sediment. It was enough to install a corner filter for 8–12 euros and the problem was solved.

Behind the water meter in an apartment building

Many apartment buildings have no filter on the pump. When repairs or valve replacements are done on the pump, impurities get into the system. I recommend installing a Y-filter DN25 or DN32 with a coarse mesh (300–500 µm) directly behind the water meter in the shared technical room—it protects the entire apartment branch at once. Each apartment can also have its own fine filter at the entrance.

Materials: brass, stainless steel, plastic—what and when?

The filter body can be made of various materials, each with its own advantages and limitations:

  • Brass: The gold standard for water fittings. Durable, machinable, compatible with most seals, and able to withstand temperature fluctuations. Long lifespan even in more aggressive environments. Suitable for cold and hot water. Most professional Y-filters (including those on atria.sk) are made of brass.
  • Stainless steel (AISI 304 or 316): A stainless steel body is ideal for aggressive water (higher chlorine content, corrosive environment). It is mainly used for filter mesh inserts—stainless steel mesh resists corrosion and can be mechanically cleaned or chemically flushed. A stainless steel body itself is more expensive, but the warranty lifespan is almost unlimited.
  • Plastic (POM, PP, PVDF): Plastic filter bodies are mainly used for drinking water systems with cartridge filters (under the sink, for reverse osmosis). For direct connection to an installation with pressure above 6 bar or temperature above 40 °C, they are less suitable. Inexpensive, but with limited operating parameters.

For standard apartment and house installations with cold water, brass with a stainless steel mesh is the absolute standard. I do not see a reason to go for a plastic body when the price difference is minimal and the lifespan is vastly different.

Installation and orientation of the filter: what not to forget

A Y-filter must always be installed so that the filter chamber (the angled branch with the mesh) points downward or at least horizontally. Never upward—in that case, the captured impurities would remain in the flow and the filter would only partially fulfill its function. Equally important is the flow direction—there is always an arrow on the filter body indicating the direction of flow, and it must not be installed "backwards".

Corner filters have markings for IN (inlet) and OUT (outlet). During installation, check that the inlet is from the side of the water supply and the outlet points toward the appliance. Reverse installation does not cause immediate failure, but the filter works inefficiently and the mesh gets clogged much faster.

Before installing any filter, it is essential to close the water supply, drain the pressure from the pipes, and only then make the threaded connections. Teflon tape or hemp thread sealing—this is still the standard for brass threads. Do not use Teflon tape with compression fittings (rubber seals in nuts).

Maintenance of filters: when and how to clean the mesh

The most common question: "How often should I clean the filter?" The answer depends on the water quality and the fineness of the mesh. In practice, I recommend the first inspection after 3 months from installation—you will see how much has been captured, and based on that, you can set the next interval. In areas with old infrastructure, it can be every 3 months, in new buildings with plastic piping even once every 2 years.

You can recognize filter clogging by several signs: reduced flow (weaker flow from taps), pressure fluctuations, or in the case of corner filters with an integrated manometer—pressure drop behind the filter. Short procedure for a Y-filter: close the supply, open the bleed valve or drain the pressure, unscrew the filter chamber closure (pointing downward), pull out the mesh, rinse it with water or a soft brush, in case of heavy clogging soak it in a weak vinegar solution for 30 minutes, rinse and put it back. Regularly check the closure gasket and replace if necessary.

Problems in practice: what happens when the filter is missing or clogged

From the perspective of installation experience: the most common problem is a clogged pressure-reducing valve. The customer comes with the issue that the pressure in the apartment has jumped—either increased or decreased. In 80% of cases, it is due to a clogged mesh in the filter (if there was a filter), or dirt that got directly into the seat of the pressure-reducing valve (if there was no filter). Replacing the seat of the pressure-reducing valve or the entire valve costs several times more than the cost of the filter. Another typical scenario: after a bathroom renovation, the customer starts having problems with the shower faucet—weak flow from one outlet, dripping of the ceramic cartridge. The cause is almost always the same—during the renovation, impurities (pieces of Teflon, small pieces of hemp or old sealing) got into the pipes and clogged the shower mesh or damaged the ceramic cartridge. Most frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Do I need a filter before each appliance, or is one at the inlet sufficient?

It depends on the situation. One high-quality filter (fineness 100–200 µm) at the inlet to the apartment or house protects the entire installation at once – this is the ideal and most economical solution. Corner filters before individual appliances are suitable as a supplement (e.g. if a problem with a specific appliance occurred in the past, or if the pipe reconstruction was only partial). In practice, the combination of a coarse filter at the inlet + a fine corner filter before expensive appliances (washing machine, dishwasher) gives the best result.

Can I use a Y-filter instead of a corner filter before the bathroom faucet?

Technically yes, if the layout allows it (straight pipe, enough space). However, a corner filter is more practical, as it changes the flow direction by 90° and integrates a shut-off valve. In the typical connection of a bathroom faucet with a wall supply, a corner filter is more logical and space-saving. A Y-filter is better for straight pipe sections where the direction does not change.

What is the difference between a filter and a pressure-reducing valve with a filter?

A filter alone captures mechanical impurities but does not reduce pressure. A pressure-reducing valve regulates pressure but does not protect against impurities on its own (if it has a built-in filter, it is usually only a coarse filter – not a replacement for a separate filter). A combined filter + pressure-reducing valve assembly performs both functions at once and is ideal for the inlet to an apartment or house, where the pipe is of small dimension and space is limited.

How can I tell that the filter is clogged and needs cleaning?

Typical signs: noticeably weaker water flow from taps, especially on devices connected directly after the filter. If you have a manometer on the pressure-reducing valve or directly on the filter, monitor the pressure difference before and after the filter – a pressure drop after the filter at the same inlet pressure indicates a clogged screen. In an apartment setting, I recommend the first inspection after 3 months from installation and then set the interval according to the actual condition of the screen.

Can I install a filter on hot water (after the water heater)?

Yes, but only a filter designed for hot water – check the maximum operating temperature in the technical documentation. Brass filters usually withstand +90 °C and more. Plastic covers or seals may be limited to +40 or +60 °C. In the hot water circuit, you typically filter finer sediments from the tank or boiler, so a screen of 100–200 µm is justified here.

What if I have a clogged drain pipe – is it related to the filter?

Not directly. Filters for water protect the pressure pipes and fixtures from the supply side, i.e. from cold and hot water. The drain pipe is a different system – the problem here is most often the accumulation of fat, soap deposits, hair or organic waste. To clear it, use mechanical tools such as sewage auger PROFI 10 meters with a thickness of 12 mm – a reliable tool for common clogs in apartment conditions.   • Inlet to a family house from a well or public water supply: Y-filter dimension DN25 (1") or DN32 (1 1/4"), coarse screen (300–800 µm), followed by a pressure-reducing valve and possibly a finer filter.
  • Inlet to an apartment in an apartment building: Compact Y-filter or combined filter + pressure-reducing valve assembly, dimension DN15 (1/2") or DN20 (3/4"), fineness 100–200 µm.
  • Before a washing machine, dishwasher, water heater or bathroom faucet: Corner filter 1/2", fine screen (100–200 µm), with an integrated shut-off valve.
  • On an apartment building riser or in a technical room: Y-filter of larger dimension (DN32 or DN40), coarse screen, brass body, easily accessible for the building manager.

In all cases, brass + stainless steel screen = a long-term investment that pays off many times over in the extended lifespan of fixtures and appliances. Nothing is more frustrating than a newly replaced expensive faucet that breaks down again for the same reason – and yet it could have been protected by a filter for a fraction of its cost.
