The M30×1.5 thread is now absolutely dominant on the European market. The number 30 indicates the outer diameter of the thread in millimeters (30 mm), and 1.5 is the pitch – that is, the distance the nut moves with one full turn (1.5 mm). This thread is used by the vast majority of valve body manufacturers available on the Slovak market: Heimeier, IMI Hydronic (Danfoss IMI), Herz, Comap, Caleffi, and many others.
If you are buying a new radiator or are in a building built after 1990, you most likely have exactly this thread. Most smart thermostatic heads are delivered directly with a nut for M30×1.5, so installation is straightforward.
Danfoss RA – a Scandinavian standard with expansion to the west
Danfoss is a Danish manufacturer with decades of experience on the market and has established its own bayonet/thread connection system for its valve bodies marked RA (Radiator Adjustment). This system does not rely on a classic metric thread, but on a proprietary standard that requires a specific adapter.
Danfoss RA valves are extremely common in Scandinavia, Denmark, Germany, Austria, and partially also in the Czech Republic and Slovakia – especially in apartment complexes from the 80s and 90s, where Danfoss was a preferred brand for installations. Herz – the Austrian standard
Herz is an Austrian manufacturer of heating technology with a long tradition and a significant presence in Slovakia, especially in older apartment buildings and family homes with Austrian installations. Herz valves use the M28×1.5 thread – that is, a diameter of 28 mm instead of 30 mm with the same pitch. This is a seemingly small difference, but metric threads M28 and M30 are mutually incompatible.

Vaillant/Junkers/Bosch – proprietary standards

Theory is nice, but most people need a quick answer: "What thread do I have at home?" Here is the procedure we recommend to customers during phone consultations.
Step 1: Look at the existing head
If your valve has a standard mechanical thermostatic head, remove it (usually just unscrew the nut or press the button). The bottom of the head or the nut often has embossed or printed thread information. Sometimes it is directly "M30×1.5" or a manufacturer's abbreviation (e.g., "RA" for Danfoss).
Step 2: Find the valve's type plate
On the valve body (the metal part that remains after removing the head), there are often embossed or cast manufacturer markings. Look for inscriptions like "Heimeier", "Herz", "Danfoss RA", "IMI", "Oventrop", etc. If you find the manufacturer, it is enough to look up the thread according to the brand.

- ≈ 30 mm: likely M30×1.5 (confirm by measuring the pitch)

- No thread, only a shank with grooves: Danfoss RA or RAS bayonet

This replacement requires a professional (heater installer), as it involves work on the hydraulic system. Only after replacing the valve body can you mount a smart head.
Valve Body without an External Thread
Some (especially older Austrian and Yugoslav) installations have valve bodies with an internal thread instead of an external one. For these cases, special adapters with an extension are available, or it may be more economical to replace the valve body.
Pin Too Long/Short
Along with the thread, the length and diameter of the activation pin (pin) that the head presses for flow control are also important. Most valve bodies use a standardized pin according to the EN 215 standard, but exceptions exist. If the pin does not match, the head may over-regulate the valve or not control it at all. In practice, we encounter situations where a customer buys an apartment with an old installation, there are no documents about the reconstruction available, and there is no readable marking on the valve. What then?
First step: Remove the old head and try to fit an M30×1.5 nut onto the valve – you can find one, for example, in the box of a new smart head. If it fits easily and without wobbling, you have M30×1.5. This is a quick practical test.
Second step: If M30 does not fit, try the nut from the RA adapter (Danfoss) – these adapters are sold for a few euros and are available in every larger heating wholesale store or e-shop. The RA bayonet system is relatively easy to recognize – it does not have a classic external thread, but a smooth output with grooves.
Third step: If that also does not work, take a photo of the valve and send it to the seller or to a heating engineers' forum. The community of experienced heating engineers can identify most valves encountered on the Slovak and Czech markets based on a photo.

Inch threads – occurrence on the Slovak market
For completeness, it is also necessary to change inch (imperial) threads, which you encounter on the Slovak market exceptionally, but still. The British standard BSP (British Standard Pipe) appears on old British or American-inspired radiators, or in industrial heating. For ordinary households in Slovakia, they are almost irrelevant, but during the reconstruction of old industrial buildings or when importing radiators, you may encounter them.
The most common inch thread on valve bodies is G 3/8" or G 1/2" – but be careful, these threads refer to hydraulic (pipe) connection, not to the thread for a thermostatic head. The thread for the thermostatic head is usually converted to metric M30×1.5 via an adapter on English radiators, or the valve is equipped with its own head connection system (e.g. Honeywell T4/T6 type).
Practical example from practice: Panelák vs. family house
A customer from a housing estate in Bratislava, an apartment building from 1986, radiators equipped with thermostatic valves Herz (installation from 2004 during reconstruction). The customer ordered smart heads, but only a Danfoss RA adapter was in the package. Result: the head did not fit, the customer called support. Solution: purchase an M28×1.5 → M30×1.5 adapter for Herz valves. Delivery the next day, installation without problems.

- Preliminary inspection: Before ordering, go through all radiators and record the type of valve on each. You won't be surprised that you have four different types of valves in one apartment.
- Order adapters with a reserve: If you have, for example, 8 radiators, order 10 adapters – there will always be one valve where everything does not fit on the first try.
- Consider unification: If you have a mix of various old valve bodies, it may be economical to have a plumber replace all of them with new M30×1.5 bodies of one brand. It will make future service interventions easier.
- Document the installation: Take a photo of the type of valve and the adapter used for each radiator. This will significantly ease the replacement of heads or batteries in the future.
- Find out about hydraulic settings: In apartment buildings, it is important to know whether the system's hydraulics are properly regulated. Smart heads will not help if the radiator receives only a fraction of the required water flow – this is a hydraulic issue, not a head issue.

No, adapters for Danfoss RA and RAS are different and not interchangeable. Danfoss RA has a larger bayonet protrusion, RAS is more compact. Before purchasing an adapter, make sure to check exactly which type of valve you have – look at the marking directly on the valve body, or search for the valve's serial number on Danfoss's website. Intentionally using an RA adapter on a RAS valve (or vice versa) usually either does not work at all, or fits loosely and the head does not control the valve.
