A linear shower drain is now a standard component of modern barrier-free shower enclosures without a bathtub. Compared to a classic point drain, it offers better drainage of larger amounts of water, a more aesthetically clean result, and more flexible tiling options. Despite this—or perhaps precisely because it is a relatively new element in everyday bathroom practice—various problems occur quite frequently with it. Some arise directly during installation, while others only become apparent after months of use. Most of them, however, are not difficult to diagnose and eliminate if you know where to look and what to look for.

In this article, we will go through all the common problems we encounter in practice—from insufficient drainage and bad odors to loose covers and corrosion. For each problem, we will explain the cause, the method of diagnosis, and the specific repair procedure. 1. Water does not drain fast enough – it pools in the shower area

This is by far the most common problem we encounter. The customer calls to say that water is pooling on the floor or draining very slowly. The first instinct of many is "clogged drain"—and sometimes it is, but not always.

Possible cause #1: Poor floor slope

This is likely the most common root cause in practice. If the mason or tiler did not create the correct slope toward the drain, the water simply has nowhere to go. For a linear drain, a slope of 1–2% across the width of the shower area is recommended (i.e., a 10–20 mm height difference per meter of length). If the slope is less than this, or if the tiling is laid with local depressions in the opposite direction, water accumulates on the floor. Diagnosis is simple: after the floor has dried, place a spirit level on various spots and check the slope direction. If you find that the slope does not lead toward the drain, the solution is unfortunately extensive—it requires removing the tiling, repairing the screed, and re-tiling. This can be avoided with proper planning before installation.

Possible cause #2: Clogged filter or strainer

Every linear drain has a filter or strainer in its body that captures hair, soap residue, and other dirt. This strainer clogs much sooner than you might expect—sometimes within just 2–3 weeks with intensive use. Simply lift the drain cover (in most models, it is magnetic or keyed), pull out the strainer, and clean it under running water with a brush. Possible cause #3: Insufficient drainage capacity for the given length of the shower area

Shower drains have a defined hydraulic capacity in liters per minute (l/min). If you have a larger shower area or a rain shower with a high flow rate, the drain length must match. 2. Odor from the shower drain

An unpleasant odor from the drain is the second most common issue. It is one of those things that customers sometimes complain about several months after the bathroom is completed. The cause is almost always the same – a dried out or missing trap seal.

Dried out trap

The trap works on a simple principle: a column of water remains in its lower part, which physically prevents odors from the sewer system from entering the bathroom. If the drain is not used for a longer period – for example during a vacation or if it is a guest bathroom – the water in the trap evaporates. It is enough to pour a few deciliters of water directly into the drain. Some premium drains have a dry trap with a membrane or flap that prevents odors without the need for a water seal – but for standard models, it is a water trap.

Improperly installed or clogged trap

If the trap does not hold water, it may be cracked or the gasket is missing. Remove the trap (usually by unscrewing it from the bottom of the drain), check the gasket and replace it if necessary. Gaskets are standardized and inexpensive. A clogged trap is cleaned mechanically – using an old dental pick or a special drain brush.

Biofilm and organic deposits in the drain body

During long-term operation, a biofilm – a thin layer of bacteria and organic matter – forms on the walls of the drain body and trap. This biofilm produces a characteristic musty odor. The solution is to thoroughly clean the inside of the drain – remove the strainer and trap, flush the drain body with hot water and wipe it with a cloth using white vinegar or an enzymatic drain cleaner. Chemical cleaners based on strong alkalis can damage the gaskets and the non-rusting surface of the drain, so we do not recommend them.

3. Decorative drain cover cannot be inserted or falls out

Another common issue – the cover (grate) sits in the drain frame either too loosely or cannot be inserted at all. Both situations have specific causes.

Cover falls out or gets dirty

If the cover wobbles or falls out when stepped on or touched, it is most often because the tile was laid too high relative to the drain edge, or the drain was installed too deep. Proper installation requires that the top edge of the drain frame be at the same level as the tile surface – with a tolerance of ±1 mm. If the frame is too deep, the cover sits lower and may wobble. In such a case, the situation can be resolved by inserting a thin gasket under the cover (rubber gasket 1–2 mm) or – in a more severe case – by grinding the edge of the drain and adjusting the height. The drain itself does not need to be replaced if the installation quality is good.

Cover cannot be inserted

The opposite problem occurs if the tile was laid too low or if the seal around the drain extends into its opening. Tiles around the drain may narrow the opening if there is too much sealant, and the cover becomes literally stuck. The solution is mechanical – carefully remove or cut the excess sealant with a Dremel or ceramic knife. 4. Water leakage under the drain or into adjacent walls

This is the most serious issue, as it can cause extensive damage to the building structure. Moisture penetrating under the tile damages the waterproofing, causes mold, and in the worst case leads to the need for a complete bathroom reconstruction.

Leaky connection between the drain and the base

During installation, the entire perimeter of the drain must be sealed with waterproofing compound or sealing tape before the tiles are laid. If the installer skipped this step or used an unsuitable material (for example, regular sanitary silicone instead of elastic waterproofing), water will penetrate under the drain edge into the screed and further. Diagnosis: press on the drain edge – if it moves or you hear a hollow sound, the waterproofing is most likely not in order. The solution requires either partial removal of the tile edge and resealing, or – if the leakage is minimal – thorough resealing of the entire drain edge from the inside and outside.

Leak at the waste pipe connection

The drain is connected to a DN 50 waste pipe (sometimes DN 40, but we do not recommend it). If this connection is not tightened or the gasket is missing, water leaks directly into the ceiling under the shower area. If you notice moisture or puddles on the ceiling in the room below the bathroom, this is the likely cause. Solution: open the bottom of the drain (usually accessible via a removable trap body), check and tighten the coupling, or replace the gasket if necessary. If the connection is only accessible from the side (for example in a niche or along the wall), it may be necessary to remove the tiles around the drain.

5. Corrosion, stains and surface damage to the drain

Even though SLEEK shower drains are made of high-quality stainless steel with surface treatment, improper care or aggressive cleaning agents can cause surface issues. Water scale and white stains

On dark surfaces (black, gun grey), water scale from hard water is very visible. It is not corrosion, but a lime deposit. It can be removed either with a special gel descaler (leave it to act for 10–15 minutes, then wipe with a soft cloth) or with a solution of white vinegar 1:1 with water. Never use abrasive sponges or powders – they will scratch the surface treatment. Pitting corrosion on stainless steel

Stainless steel is not absolutely resistant to corrosion – especially when in contact with chlorides (found in cleaning agents based on chlorine and disinfectants). Pitting corrosion appears as orange or brown spots on the surface. If the damage is superficial, it can be removed with a special stainless steel cleaner (passivating agent) and gentle polishing. For deeper damage, we recommend contacting the manufacturer or considering replacing the cover, as the drain body itself is protected by waterproofing and is not visible.

Worn or peeling cover color

Due to mechanical damage (e.g., impact of a hard object), the PVD or powder coating may peel off. This type of damage cannot be repaired with common household tools – the corresponding cover must be replaced. Covers are usually available as separate spare parts. Always note the exact model and dimensions of the drain to order the correct cover.

6. The drain moves, vibrates or makes noise when walking

Grinding or movement of the drain underfoot is unpleasant and may indicate a more serious installation issue.

Loose anchoring elements

The drain body is anchored to the floor before the surrounding area is concreted and tiled. If the anchoring feet or screws were not properly tightened, or if the concrete around the drain cracked, the drain may move. Diagnosis: press your hand on various parts of the drain edge and observe whether it moves. If it does, it is usually necessary to uncover at least part of the surrounding tile and re-secure the drain body. In some cases, inserting acrylic sealant or mounting foam (not suitable for wet areas!) under the edge may suffice – but this is only a temporary solution.

Resonance of the cover

Sometimes the problem is not in the drain itself, but only in the cover, which resonates when walking. The solution is simple: attach a thin rubber pad or silicone strip to both ends of the cover to dampen vibrations. This issue often occurs when the cover is slightly shorter than the internal length of the drain and can move freely from side to side.

7. Water seepage through gaps around the drain

Gaps between the tile and the drain edge are potential weak points. Unlike regular tile joints, these gaps must be flexible – not rigid. If the tiler sealed the drain edge with cement-based grout, it will eventually crack (due to thermal expansion of metal), and water will start to seep through the cracks.

Correct solution: the gap between the drain and the tile must always be sealed with silicone or another elastic sealing material compatible with a wet environment (class C3). Cement-based grout must not be used at all. If you inherited a bathroom with cement grout around the drain, we recommend carefully grinding it out using a special grout grinding attachment and replacing it with silicone of the same color.

8. Odor from the sewer despite a functional trap

This is a tricky problem because the customer cleans the trap, fills it with water, and yet the odor persists. In such a case, the cause must be sought elsewhere.

Non-vented waste branch

If the waste branch of the linear drain is not properly connected to a vented sewer system, or if a vent cap is missing, a vacuum may be created in the pipe when water is drained from the drain, which can suck the water out of the trap. Then the trap is empty despite recent use. The solution is to verify the correct connection to the sewer system by an installer and possibly to add a vent (air admittance valve).

Smelly waste pipe

The waste pipe itself behind the trap may contain biofilm, fat deposits or other organic substances. In such a case, the entire branch of the waste pipe must be chemically cleaned using an enzymatic cleaner or a professional cleaning service with high-pressure flushing.

9. Tile near the drain cracks or peels

Several customers have described a situation where the tile directly next to the drain started to peel or crack after a few months. This is a typical consequence of several errors occurring at once.

The first cause is insufficient waterproofing before tiling. If moisture gets under the adhesive, it will cause tiles to pop out during winter (or due to temperature changes). The second cause is inappropriate expansion joints – in large shower areas without expansion joints, the tile expands and breaks exactly at the weakest point – at the transition to the metal drain. The third cause may be inappropriate adhesive. For shower areas, it is essential to use flexible adhesive C2TE (or S1 or S2 for large-format tiles or materials with different thermal expansion, such as metal and ceramic).

Preventive measures during installation – what to do to avoid problems

From our ten years of experience with customer cases, we know that most problems with linear drains stem from installation errors.   • Waterproofing of the entire shower area – including the transition zone near the drain, at least 2 layers of coating or membrane. The area must be waterproofed before the drain is installed, and the drain must be integrated into it using a sealing gasket or tape.
  • Correct slope of the screed – minimum 1 %, ideally 1.5 – 2 % towards the drain. The screed must be sufficiently cured before tiling (minimum 28 days for cement screed).
  • Minimum diameter of the waste pipe DN 50 – a smaller diameter will cause insufficient drainage and odor. The pipe must have the correct slope (minimum 2 % for the horizontal section).
  • Inserting the cover during tiling – leave the cover in the drain during the entire sealing process to ensure the correct size of the opening.
  • Elastic sealing around the drain – not cement grout, but silicone or elastic sealant.
  • First water test before embedding – before final tiling, test the seal under water pressure and check for any leaks.

When a complete replacement of the drain is necessary

Most issues can be repaired without replacing the entire drain. However, there are situations when replacement is necessary:

  • Mechanical damage to the drain body (breakage, deep deformation)
  • Corrosion penetrating through the drain body wall
  • Cracked or broken siphon body, if no spare part is available
  • Situation where the drain frame height differs from the installed tile height by more than 5 mm and cannot be compensated otherwise

In such cases, it is good to know that replacing the drain does not necessarily mean completely dismantling the shower enclosure. If the drain body is accessible from above (i.e., the tiles around the drain are holding well), it is sometimes possible to remove the old drain and install a new one of the same dimensions without major construction work. The condition is that the new drain has the same width and length.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Why is water pooling in the shower tray even after cleaning the filter?

If you have cleaned the filter and the water still pools, the problem is most likely the floor slope. Check with a spirit level to ensure the floor actually slopes toward the drain and not away from it. Another possibility is an insufficient diameter of the waste pipe (less than DN 50) or an inadequate slope (less than 2 %).

Can I replace the siphon of a linear drain by myself without a professional?

Yes, in most cases, siphon replacement is a DIY task. The siphon is usually accessible after removing the cover and the grid – it can be unscrewed by hand or with a special key from the accessory set. Make sure the new siphon is an original part or a certified replacement suitable for the specific model. After replacement, always run water and check the seal before closing the drain.

Is it normal to smell a slight metallic odor when using a new drain for the first time?

Yes, this is normal. Manufacturing residues and protective oils on the surface of stainless steel can emit a slight odor when heated by water for the first time. Simply rinse the drain several times with warm water and the odor will disappear. If the odor persists for more than 2–3 days, it is likely coming from the sewer (see the section about the siphon).

What should I do if the tiles near the drain crack?

Do not delay the solution. Cracks in tiles and grout can quickly lead to water leakage into the floor structure. Temporarily seal the cracks with silicone and contact a tiler as soon as possible. The diagnosis usually reveals either missing expansion joints, unsuitable adhesive, or insufficient waterproofing – each of these issues requires professional intervention.

Can I use silicone of a different color than the drain cover?

Technically yes, but aesthetically it looks unprofessional. For dark drains (black, gun grey), there are silicone sealants available in anthracite or black color that visually blend with the drain frame. White or natural silicone on a black drain looks disruptive and dirtier over time. We recommend investing in color-matching silicone – the price difference is minimal, but the result is significantly better.

How long will a linear shower drain last without repairs under normal use?

With proper installation, regular cleaning (grid once every 2–4 weeks, deep cleaning once every 6 months), and avoiding aggressive chemicals, a quality drain should last 15–20 years without any serious issues. Covers and siphons are replaceable parts and can be renewed as needed. The body of the drain made of quality stainless steel practically does not age with proper care.
