How to determine which pipes you have – practical steps
Before you buy any valve, you must perform a simple inspection of the existing situation. Here is a step-by-step process that always works:
Step 1: Determine where the distribution comes from
Look at the area under (or behind) the radiator. The pipes leading to the valve connectors can come from three basic directions:
- Horizontally from the wall – the pipes are embedded in the wall and protrude from it perpendicularly (horizontally). This is the most common case in apartments with panel distribution. You will need a corner valve in this case.
- Vertically from the floor – the pipes protrude directly from the floor upwards. Typical for single-family homes with floor-based distribution or renovations with floor-level installation. You will need a straight valve in this case.
- Vertically from the wall (near the floor) – the pipes run through the wall but exit just above the floor upwards. This can be a borderline case – it depends on the exact position. In most cases, a corner valve is still suitable if the pipe runs horizontally, or a straight valve if the pipe runs vertically.

If there is an old valve on the radiator, simply look at its orientation. A corner valve has a characteristic "elbow" – the body forms a visible 90° bend. The radiator hangs under the window, connected from below. Result: angle valve on both sides (supply and return). Typical thread size: 1/2" or 3/4" on the pipe side, EK (Eurokonus) on the radiator side.
Detached house with floor routing
An increasingly common case in new builds or renovations where floor channels have been invested in. Pipes come up directly from the floor under the radiator, routed vertically upwards. The radiator has a bottom connection. Result: straight valve on both sides. Caution – some older detached houses have floor routing, but the pipes are led out through the wall just above the floor, which may look like a straight case, but it is actually an angle one.
Bathroom ladder radiator
Ladder radiators (bathroom bodies) usually have side or bottom connections. If connected to a wall pipe with horizontally protruding pipes, you need an angle valve with the appropriate direction – sometimes the valve is oriented to the left or right, which must be specified when ordering. If the connection is from the floor, a straight valve applies. In bathrooms, it is also common to use a angle valve with a bleed screw, since ladder radiators are prone to air bubbles.
Renovation with the original piping preserved
The customer is changing only the radiator or only the valves, while the piping remains the original. The procedure is simple here: photograph the old valve, determine its type and thread dimensions, and order the same type. Floor heating plus radiator in one room
This is an interesting case. If you have a combination of floor heating and an additional radiator (e.g., in a bathroom), the radiator is usually connected via a separate loop. The type of valve depends on the routing of this loop – the rule about pipe direction applies again.
Dimensions and threads – what you need to know besides geometry
The type (angle/straight) is only part of the information needed when choosing a valve. Equally important are the threads – many customers make mistakes here, thinking that "1/2 is 1/2" regardless of the standard. - EK (Eurokonus) – a special conical thread on the radiator side, allows connection without sealing. Now standard for most panel and design radiators.
Most valves on the Slovak market are labeled, for example, as 1/2" x EK – this means that on the pipe side (wall/floor) it has a 1/2" thread, and on the radiator side it has a Eurokonus. Dual-control valve – why it is better than a standard angle valve
When choosing a new valve, it is worth considering whether you want a simple valve (open/close) or a dual-control valve. A dual-control valve not only allows you to open/close the water supply to the radiator, but also to pre-set the hydraulic balancing of the circuit. This is especially important in apartment buildings, where there are several radiators on one circuit – without pre-set balancing, the radiators closest to the boiler get too much heat and the last ones get too little.
Hydraulic balancing is set using an integrated adjusting screw built directly into the valve body – using a special key or a flat screwdriver, you set the degree of opening from 0 to maximum flow. The pre-set flow value depends on the hydraulic calculation of the entire system, done by the designer or installer. In practice, this means that when installing a new valve, the installer will ask for a specific pre-set flow value – and for this purpose, you need a dual-control valve, not a simple one.
Thermostatic vs. manual corner/straight valves

- Thermostatic valve has a connection (standard M30×1,5) for a thermostatic head. The head then automatically regulates the flow according to the set temperature. This is the recommended standard today – more energy efficient and more comfortable.

Mistake 1: Confusing the direction of the corner valve (left/right)
A corner valve has a defined direction – the pipe from the wall goes either from the left or right to the valve, and then goes up to the radiator. In an asymmetrically connected radiator (for example, when the pipes are at the left leg, but the thermostatic head must be accessible from the right), it may be necessary to use a valve with the opposite orientation. Some valves can be mounted in both directions, others not. If you are unsure, verify this before purchase.
Mistake 2: Intending to buy a straight valve for wall installation
The customer sees that the pipe comes out of the wall, but due to aesthetics or space, wants to use a straight valve. This is physically possible only with a 90° elbow inserted between the pipe and the valve – but this unnecessarily increases the number of connections (potential leak points), complicates the installation and usually also spoils the aesthetics more, not less. The correct solution is a corner valve.
Mistake 3: Buying based on a photo without checking the direction
Online shopping brings the risk that the customer chooses a product based on a photo, where the valve looks similar to the original. But the photo may not show the direction of the opening. Can I use an angled valve instead of a straight one if I don't have the right type on hand?
No, without further modifications, it is not possible. An angled valve is physically designed to change the flow direction by 90°. If you were to install it on a straight run (pipe from the floor), the valve would stick out sideways and the connection to the radiator would point diagonally or horizontally, not upward. A solution would be to add a 90° elbow – which unnecessarily complicates the installation, adds connections, and increases the risk of leaks. Always use the correct type of valve.
How can I determine the thread size on the pipe if I don't have a measuring tool?
The easiest way is to bring the old valve to the store or measure the outer diameter of the threaded part with a caliper. A 1/2" G thread has an outer diameter of approximately 20.9 mm, and a 3/4" G thread is approximately 26.4 mm. You can also use a thread gauge (a few euros at any good hardware store). Do I have to replace both valves (supply and return) at the same time, or can I replace just one?
Technically, you can replace just one – for example, only the thermostatic valve on the supply side if the return valve is working well. The thermostatic head is not working on my new valve – what am I doing wrong?
The most common issue is incompatibility of the connector thread (M28 vs. M30) or incorrect installation of the head (the head must be fully seated and secured on the valve connector). Check if your valve has an M30×1.5 connector – this is the current standard. Older valves may have a different thread (M28 or other). Some heads come with adapters for different sizes. Is there a "universal" valve that works as both angled and straight?
Not in the true sense of the word.
