The electric towel dryer DEVIrail looks simple at first glance: you hang it on the wall, plug it into an outlet, and you're done. In practice, this is usually the case – but only if the electrical installation in the bathroom is properly designed. And this is precisely the problem we see repeatedly in customer orders. A customer buys a nice ladder-style dryer, has it installed, and only later discovers that there is no suitable outlet in the bathroom, or that the existing one is too close to the shower area, or that the circuit breaker trips every time two appliances are turned on at the same time. This article therefore does not address just "plug it in and it works" – it addresses the entire context of electrical installation for DEVIrail from the ground up.

Why electrical installation in the bathroom is different from anywhere else
A bathroom is, from a construction point of view, a so-called wet area, and from an electrical engineering perspective, it belongs to areas with an increased risk of electric shock. Water, humidity, and the human body in contact with conductive surfaces create conditions under which even the standard voltage of 230 V can be lethal. Therefore, there are special regulations for bathrooms – specifically the standard STN 33 2000-7-701, which defines so-called protective zones (zones 0, 1, 2 and the external zone) and precisely specifies which electrical appliances and installations are allowed in each zone.
DEVIrail is an electric heating appliance with a rated voltage of 230 V AC and a power of typically 60 W to 180 W depending on the model and size. It belongs to the category of class I appliances (with protective earthing) or class II appliances (double insulation – depending on the specific model). These details are always listed on the nameplate and in the technical documentation, which we recommend you study before installation.
Protective zones in the bathroom and where DEVIrail can be placed
To clarify the terms, we briefly describe the zones according to the standard. Zone 0 is directly in the bathtub or shower area (inside the basin). Zone 1 extends vertically above the bathtub or shower up to a height of 2.25 m from the floor. Zone 2 is a 0.6 m wide strip around zone 1 horizontally. In the external zone (outside zones 0, 1, 2), the usual rules for dry areas apply, but in practice, the entire bathroom area is still considered risky.
DEVIrail can be placed in zone 1 and zone 2, but the outlet into which it is plugged must be outside zone 1 and outside zone 2 – that is, in the external zone, at least 0.6 m from the edge of the bathtub or shower area. This is a rule that is relatively often violated in practice, because older electricians or laymen do not know it or underestimate it.
What type of connection does DEVIrail use
DEVIrail is delivered in the standard version with a connecting cable terminated with a plug (socket) into a standard 230 V outlet. The cable has a length of usually 1.5 to 1.8 m (depending on the model) and is led out from the body of the dryer at the bottom or on the side depending on the construction. For example, DEVIrail S White and DEVIrail S Chrome have a cable with a plug for simple plug-in installation, as do DEVIrail U White and DEVIrail U Chrome.
In addition to the plug-in connection, some installations use a fixed connection – the cable is embedded in the wall and the dryer is connected directly to the distribution board without an outlet. This solution is electrically safer in terms of contact with water (the outlet in the bathroom is eliminated), but it requires an electrician to connect it and is more complicated when replacing the dryer. For a standard apartment installation with DEVIrail, the plug-in solution is completely acceptable and practical, provided the outlet is properly located.
Type of outlet – protective conductor is mandatory
DEVIrail must always be connected to an outlet with a protective conductor (ground contact). Outlets of the type "without a ground" (old Soviet type or old two-pole outlets without a PE contact) are absolutely unacceptable in the bathroom. A standard outlet of the Schuko type (CEE 7/4) with a ground is the correct choice. The outlet must be at least IP44 rated – that is, covered, with a flip cover or other protective element against direct water spray and humidity. During normal use of the bathroom (steam, condensation), an outlet without IP44 protection can become a source of problems even without direct contact with water.
Residual current device (RCD) – a requirement, not an optional accessory
This is an area where many older installations do not meet current standards. According to STN 33 2000-7-701, every circuit in the bathroom must be protected by a residual current device (RCD, colloquially called a "residual current device") with a tripping current of no more than 30 mA. This applies without exception – for lighting, sockets, and for fixed appliances as well.
A 30 mA RCD detects fault current flowing outside the normal path – for example, through a person touching a live part – and disconnects the circuit within 0.04 seconds. This protection can save lives. Although DEVIrail is a carefully designed appliance with double insulation or an earth connection, faults can occur in the wiring, at the socket, or due to mechanical damage to the cable.
If your bathroom was installed before RCDs became mandatory (typically apartments before the year 2000), we recommend having an electrician assess the entire bathroom electrical installation before installing DEVIrail. Installing a single RCD for the bathroom circuit is not expensive (roughly 30–80 € for labor and materials), but it significantly increases safety.
Circuit breaker – what type and how many amps
DEVIrail has a power consumption typically ranging from 60 W (small models, e.g., 40×60 cm) to 180 W (large models, e.g., 50×140 cm). Current in amps can be easily calculated: P = U × I, so I = P / U = 180 / 230 = 0.78 A. Even the largest DEVIrail model does not exceed a current consumption of 1 A.
It might seem that a 6 A or 10 A circuit breaker is more than sufficient. Yes – for the heater alone. But the bathroom circuit usually also powers other devices: lighting, a fan, possibly infrared heating or a heated floor. Therefore, it is important to assess the total load of the circuit, not just the heater's consumption.
In practice, we see two common scenarios:
- The bathroom has a dedicated circuit for the heater: In this case, a 10 A type B circuit breaker (B10) is sufficient. A cable cross-section of 1.5 mm² is absolutely adequate for power up to 180 W.
- The heater is on a shared bathroom circuit: In this case, it is necessary to check the total simultaneous load of all devices. For example, if the circuit powers lighting (50 W), a fan (30 W), and DEVIrail (150 W), the total load is 230 W = approximately 1 A. This is still fine for a 10 A circuit breaker. Problems arise if someone connects a hair dryer (1500–2200 W) to the same circuit – the circuit breaker should normally withstand this, but overloading is possible.
Practical recommendation: for a bathroom socket (where a hair dryer, electric shaver, or charger may be plugged in), it is better to use a 16 A circuit breaker with a 2.5 mm² cable cross-section. DEVIrail will only benefit from this, as it has enough "space" and in the case of simultaneous use of a hair dryer, the circuit breaker will not trip.
Type of circuit breaker – B or C?
DEVIrail is a purely resistive load – no motor, no capacitor, no inrush current. Therefore, type B (tripping range 3–5× rated current) is completely sufficient. There is no reason to install a type C circuit breaker, unless there are devices with large inrush currents on the same circuit.
Where to place the socket – practical rules
Socket placement is something that should be resolved during renovation, best before tiling. It is much more expensive and complicated to resolve it later.
Basic rules for socket placement for DEVIrail:
- Horizontal distance from the bathtub / shower area: at least 0.6 m from the outer edge (i.e., outside zone 2).
- Vertical height: not strictly defined, but we recommend a height of 30–50 cm from the floor (so it is hidden behind the heater) or a height of 120–150 cm (standard height, convenient to use). Important: if the socket is behind the heater, the cable must reach without being stretched.
- Socket behind the heater: a popular solution from an aesthetic point of view – the cable is not visible. But be careful – the socket must be accessible if you want to disconnect the heater without dismantling it. A solution is that the heater can be disassembled from the brackets without tools.
- Socket next to the heater: more practical in terms of accessibility, but the cable hangs next to it. Some customers use a cable channel in the same color as the heater.
- Socket above the heater: less common, but possible. The cable drops down and can be elegantly hidden behind the heater's frame.
In practice, we also encounter situations where the customer wants to install DEVIrail W White – the W shape with a larger frame area – on the wall between the bathtub and the door, where space is limited. In such a situation, it is crucial to plan correctly where the socket will be, as it is not always possible to "turn" the cable to the other side.
Cable length – what to do if it is not enough
The standard length of the DEVIrail power cable is 1.5 m – 1.8 m. This is usually sufficient if the socket is behind or very close to the heater. If the socket is further away, it may be tempting to use an extension cable. However, this is a solution we categorically do not recommend for permanently installed appliances in the bathroom.
An extension cable in the bathroom is unsuitable for several reasons:
- An extension cable is not certified for use in wet areas.
- The connection between the plug and socket of the extension cable is not sealed, and moisture can enter.
- A loose cable on the floor is a safety hazard (tripping, mechanical damage).
- An insurance company may object to the problematic installation in the event of a claim.
The correct solution: have an electrician extend the electrical installation and install the socket in the correct location. Alternatively, have the towel dryer hardwired (without a socket) into an electrical box with a longer cable reach – but this also requires a professional.
Hardwired (hardwire) connection of DEVIrail – when and how
Some customers, especially in premium installations or full renovation projects, want a bathroom without any visible sockets or cables. In such cases, the DEVIrail is hardwired – the appliance cable is directly connected to an electrical box built into the wall, and the wiring leads to the distribution board.
Hardwiring has several advantages:
- No visible sockets or plugs – a clean aesthetic impression.
- Eliminates the risk of moisture at the plug connection.
- It is not possible to accidentally disconnect the towel dryer from the power supply (which can happen with a plug-in solution when someone needs the socket for another appliance).
Disadvantages of hardwiring:
- Replacing the towel dryer is more complicated – it requires an electrician.
- Higher installation costs.
- With a hardwired connection, the customer cannot easily disconnect the appliance from the power supply (they must go to the circuit breakers).
If you plan a hardwired connection, we recommend consulting the seller's customer service or an electrician before purchasing the towel dryer to confirm whether the specific DEVIrail model is structurally suitable for hardwiring.
Influence of the towel dryer's position on cable routing and aesthetics
The shape of the ladder also affects how easily the cable can be hidden. Models with a straight ladder (type S) have straight side profiles, which allows the cable to be routed close to the wall and hidden behind the side rail. Curved and rounded models (type U, W) usually have the cable routed along the bottom and are slightly harder to hide along the wall. In practice, this is solved either by routing the cable directly in the wall (ideal), or by using a plastic cable channel in white or chrome, matching the color of the towel dryer model.
If you have chosen the DEVIrail U Chrome or DEVIrail S Chrome, we recommend using a metallic cable channel or a chrome-plated cable rail – this looks aesthetically pleasing and not cheap. Combine white models logically with white rails.
Electrical safety from the perspective of inspection
After completing any electrical installation in the bathroom, a professional electrical inspection, so-called electrical installation inspection, should follow. This will verify the insulation resistance of the wiring, the correctness of the protective conductor connection, the functionality of the RCD, and other parameters. The result is an inspection report, which is also important for the insurance company in the event of a damage incident.
In practice, a large portion of customers do not perform an inspection after installing the towel dryer, which is understandable – if the electrician correctly connected the plug-in installation without any changes to the distribution board, it is not a new installation. However, if a new installation was carried out (new socket, new circuit, new circuit breaker), the inspection is not only recommended, but in some cases also mandatory.
Common mistakes from practice and how to avoid them
Over the years of selling and installing towel dryers, we have collected several recurring scenarios where the installation turned out worse than the customer expected. Here are the most common ones:
- Socket in zone 2 or even in zone 1: An old electrician placed the socket right next to the bath, because "he always did it that way". The new standard prohibits this. Solution: move the socket outside zone 2, which in the case of a tiled wall means an expensive repair.
- Missing RCD: In a panel house from the 80s, there is no residual current device in the bathroom. The customer bought a DEVIrail, had it connected to an existing socket, and since the dryer works, it seems everything is fine. It is not – in the event of a fault, there is no protection other than the fuse, and it does not detect a 30 mA fault current.
- Plug connected to an extension cable running from the hallway: The customer did not have a socket in the bathroom, and the "temporary" solution became permanent. Humidity, risk of tripping, and an unsecured plug – a complex problem.
- Too short cable and tension on the plug: The towel dryer was placed far from the socket, the cable was stretched, and the plug was in the socket at an angle. The contact gradually loosened, leading to sparking and burning of the socket.
- Socket without IP44 cover: In a bathroom with an open shower and poor ventilation, condensation entered the uncovered socket and caused a short circuit.
Each of these problems is 100% predictable and 100% avoidable if the electrical installation is properly designed and carried out from the very beginning. DEVIrail and Class I vs. Class II appliance
Most DEVIrail models belong to protection class II – meaning they are constructed with double insulation and do not require grounding. The rating plate on such an appliance carries the symbol of two concentric squares (□□). This theoretically means they could be plugged into an outlet without a PE contact. However:
- The standard for bathrooms still requires outlets with a ground contact.
- A plug with a ground pin physically does not fit into an outlet without a ground pin (European standard).
- Three-wire cabling (L, N, PE) is standard for bathrooms and there is no reason to deviate from it.
This means for the average customer: always install a Schuko socket with a protective pin, regardless of which protection class your DEVIrail belongs to. Protection via RCD and grounding are complementary, not interchangeable measures.
Combining DEVIrail with heated floor on the same circuit
This is a scenario we encounter during complex bathroom renovations. The customer wants an electric heated floor and DEVIrail. Can they be on the same circuit?
It depends on the power ratings. For example, a heated floor with 600 W and DEVIrail with 150 W – total power is 750 W = approx. 3.3 A. This is fine for a 10 A circuit breaker and 1.5 mm² cable. However, if you have a larger bathroom with floor heating of 1200 W + DEVIrail 180 W + other appliances, the total power exceeds 1400–1500 W = 6–7 A. This is still manageable for a 10 A circuit breaker, but it's on the edge, and adding a hair dryer (1800 W) will trip the breaker.
Our recommendation: for bathrooms with multiple high-power electrical appliances (floor heating, DEVIrail, infrared heating), design each system on a separate circuit with its own circuit breaker and RCD. This is more expensive for electrical installation, but it eliminates mutual interference and circuit breaker tripping during simultaneous operation.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Can I plug DEVIrail into a regular extension cord?
No, we do not recommend this solution and for a permanent installation in the bathroom, it is also in violation of electrical standards. An extension cord is not intended for use in a humid environment, the connection between the plug and the extension cord socket is not resistant to moisture, and the connection is not sufficiently protected. The correct solution is to have an electrician install a suitable IP44 socket in the correct location.
What is the minimum distance of the socket from the bathtub or shower?
According to the standard STN 33 2000-7-701, the socket must be placed outside of zone 2, which means at least 0.6 m horizontally from the edge of the bathtub or shower tray. Vertically, zone 1 extends up to 2.25 m above the edge of the bathtub. The socket must therefore be at least 0.6 m from the bathtub also in the vertical direction at these heights. In general: the further away, the safer.
Is a residual current device (RCD) mandatory for DEVIrail installation?
Yes. According to current standards, an RCD with a tripping current of maximum 30 mA is mandatory for every electrical circuit in the bathroom. An installation in the bathroom without an RCD is not compliant with the standard. If your bathroom installation is protected by an RCD, you can verify it easily: in the distribution board, there should be a visible device with a test button labeled "T" or "TEST".
What circuit breaker do I need for DEVIrail?
DEVIrail has a maximum power of up to 180 W, which is less than 1 A. A 6 A circuit breaker would be sufficient for the towel dryer alone. However, the bathroom circuit usually also powers other appliances, so we recommend a 10 A circuit breaker (or 16 A if there are devices with higher power on the circuit). The cable for a 10 A circuit breaker must have a minimum cross-section of 1.5 mm², for 16 A at least 2.5 mm².
Can I connect DEVIrail myself without an electrician?
Plugging into an existing, properly installed IP44 socket can be done by an average customer themselves – this is not electrical work, just plugging a plug into a socket, just like connecting any other appliance. Any work on the installation itself (new socket, new wiring, modification of the distribution board) must be done only by a person with the appropriate electrical qualification according to Decree No. 508/2009 Coll.
What if the DEVIrail cable is not long enough to reach the socket?
The best solution is to have an electrician move the socket closer to the dryer or extend the installation wiring so that the socket is accessible. The second option is to purchase a waterproof extension cable with IP44 rating, intended for outdoor or bathroom use – these do exist, but they are a compromise. The extension cable should be as short as possible, securely fastened, and outside of zones 1 and 2.
Conclusion – invest time in preparation, save problems later
An electrical installation for DEVIrail is not technically complicated – but if done incorrectly, it can have serious consequences. The differences between a correct and incorrect installation are mostly in the details: IP44 or no protection, RCD or just a circuit breaker, correct distance from the bathtub or not. These details do not cost much more during planning, but correcting them in a tiled bathroom can be painful.
