They are not water systems – they are fully electric, which means that every kilowatt-hour they consume is directly reflected in the bill. That sounds unassuming, but if the device runs 24 hours a day all year round without regulation, the numbers grow quickly.

Without a thermostat, the heating element runs at full power constantly while the device is on. As you can see from the diagram, the difference between unregulated operation and the combination of thermostat and timer can be 400 kWh per year for a 60 W dryer. At an electricity price of around 0.25 €/kWh, this represents a saving of around 100 € per year – and we are talking about just one towel dryer. When these principles are correctly set up from the first day, the investment in a better quality thermostat pays off within two to three seasons.

Types of thermostats and timers compatible with DEVIrail

Before we get into the actual setting, it is important to understand what regulation options DEVIrail offers and what it is compatible with. There are three basic scenarios:

1. Built-in thermostat directly in the dryer

Some DEVIrail models have a thermostat integrated directly into the body of the device – usually in the form of a rotating dial or button panel located on the side rail of the ladder. The disadvantage of analog timers is the coarse division into 15-minute blocks, digital ones allow for precision to the minute and allow you to create different programs for workdays and weekends.

3. Smart plug or smart regulator

A modern alternative – a smart plug with Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connection allows you to control DEVIrail via a mobile app. You can change the schedule remotely at any time, monitor consumption in real time and set exceptions for vacation periods. Step by step: setting the thermostat on DEVIrail

Let's look at the specific process of setting the built-in thermostat. All common DEVIrail models operate on the same principles – whether it's the DEVIrail S White, DEVIrail S Chrome, or the larger DEVIrail U White.

Step 1 – Determine the actual required temperature

First, ask yourself what you actually expect from the towel dryer. If you only want to dry a wet towel after a shower, a surface temperature of around 45–50 °C is sufficient. If you want the towel to be warm and pleasant before your morning shower, even 35–40 °C is enough – the feeling of warmth on the skin doesn't require a high temperature, you only need heat accumulation in the fabric. On the other hand, the antibacterial effect (killing moisture-loving microorganisms in the towel) only begins at temperatures above 55–60 °C, which makes sense, for example, in case of prolonged moisture in the room or a sick family member.

The majority of households function well with the thermostat set to a value corresponding to a surface temperature of 40–50 °C. This is the middle of the scale and is completely sufficient for normal use. Setting the thermostat to maximum and leaving it there permanently is the most common mistake we see during installations.

Step 2 – Physically turn the thermostat

The thermostat on DEVIrail is usually located in the upper or lower electrical connection of the unit. You recognize it by a small rotating wheel or arrow in position. The wheel can be turned either directly or (in some models) with a small coin or flat screwdriver. The range is usually marked with numbers from 1 to 5, symbols, or directly with values in °C.

Turn the wheel to the desired value. I recommend starting at a lower setting (around 2–3 out of 5, or 40–45 °C) and after a week of normal operation, evaluate whether this is sufficient for you. If not, increase it by one degree. This way you calibrate the thermostat to the real conditions of your bathroom, not to ideal laboratory conditions.

Ideal timer setting: turn on at 6:00 (so the dryer is warm before entering the bathroom), turn off at 9:00, turn on again at 17:30, turn off at 22:00. Total operating time: about 7.5 hours a day instead of 24 hours. Savings from the timer alone: over 68% of operating time.

Scenario B – Working from home, irregular schedule

In this case, an external analog timer is less effective because people can be in the bathroom at any time. In such a case, I recommend either a smart plug with control via a phone (you turn it on manually before a shower + you have a backup program set), or simply set the thermostat to a lower value (30–35 °C) and let the dryer run for a longer time at a low power level. Consumption at a low temperature setting is significantly lower than at a high temperature, because the thermostat cycles with longer pauses.

Scenario C – Weekend cottage or seasonal living

When using the dryer for recreation, the most important thing is to remember to TURN IT OFF before leaving. If you want frost protection, set the thermostat to the minimum (anti-frost mode, if the device has it, or a value corresponding to about 5–7 °C of ambient air). A smart solution excels here – you can turn the dryer on remotely a day before arrival, so the bathroom space is pleasant, and turn it off again after leaving.

Anti-frost mode and summer break – two extreme positions

Along with regular operation, it is also important to know about two special operating conditions.

Anti-frost mode – The DEVIrail should never be completely turned off in a space where freezing is a risk. Although the towel dryer itself has no water and cannot freeze, a bathroom without heating in winter can cause problems with pipes in the walls or condensation. If you are going on a long holiday in winter, set the thermostat to minimum and let the device run in the anti-frost maintenance mode. The energy consumption of this mode is minimal – the heating element turns on only a few times a day for a short period.

Summer break – In summer, when the bathroom is naturally warm and the air humidity is sufficient for towels to dry quickly without heating, it makes sense to turn off the DEVIrail completely. I recommend turning it off either with the switch on the panel (if it has one), or by unplugging the plug or switching off the circuit at the fuse. Leaving it in standby mode consumes a small but unnecessary amount of current. Savings over 3–4 summer months without operation can reach 30–50 kWh – not a huge number, but also not zero.

Most common setup errors – and how to fix them

Over the years of working with electric heating installations in bathrooms, I have repeatedly seen these errors:

  • Thermostat permanently set to maximum. A customer might say: "Let the towel be as hot as possible." Result: the towel dryer runs almost continuously, consumption is maximum, and the surface of the dryer is so hot that it burns on contact. Solution: lower the thermostat to the middle of the scale and give the dryer time to adjust.
  • Analog timer incorrectly set after switching to/from daylight saving time. This is a common problem in spring and autumn. After the time change, check that the reference time on the timer is correct – otherwise the towel dryer will turn on an hour earlier or later than planned.
  • Forgotten "weekend vs. workday" setting on a digital timer. Digital timers usually operate in 5+2 mode (workdays and weekend separately) or 7 (same every day).   • Socket on the wrong circuit. If a socket timer or smart socket repeatedly trips the circuit breaker, it is possible that the socket circuit is overloaded by other appliances. Optimization according to the season – a dynamic strategy

Energy savings are not a one-time setting – it is a dynamic process. I recommend reviewing the thermostat and timer settings at least twice a year: at the beginning of the heating season (October/November) and at the beginning of the warmer period (April/May).

In winter, the bathroom is colder, the air is drier, and towels dry more slowly – you can set the thermostat higher (50–55 °C) and extend the timer by 30–60 minutes for each cycle. In summer, the situation is exactly the opposite – a lower setting (35–40 °C) and shorter operating time is sufficient, if you use the towel dryer at all in summer.

The rest of the time, the central heating maintains room temperature and DEVIrail does not need to operate at all. Annual energy consumption of an optimally configured dryer drops below 50–80 kWh, which is a negligible amount.

The larger model DEVIrail W White or DEVIrail U Chrome with higher power is particularly suitable for combined heating in larger bathrooms, where central heating is insufficient to warm up corner areas or where the bathroom is poorly insulated and cools down quickly. In other cases, a smaller model and even more precise downward regulation will suffice.

Practical test: how to find out if your thermostat is set correctly

There is a simple home test. Turn on the dryer when the bathroom is at room temperature (not after a hot shower). Set the thermostat to your usual setting. After 20 minutes, place your hand on the middle bar of the rack – it should feel comfortably warm, not burning. If you have to pull your hand away immediately, the thermostat is set too high. If you barely notice the bar as warm, the setting is too low for winter conditions (it might be fine in summer).

Second test: after a shower, hang a wet towel and observe how long it takes to dry. With a correct setting, the towel should be dry within 60–90 minutes at a typical terry thickness. If it takes more than 2–3 hours, either the setting is too low or the space is too humid and poorly ventilated – in such cases, the solution may not be just the thermostat, but also the bathroom ventilation.

Can the thermostat be set to maximum all year round without damaging the DEVIrail?

Technically, the device can withstand such operation – DEVIrail is designed for continuous operation. The problem, however, is not in damage, but in unnecessary energy consumption and towel overheating. Cotton and microfiber materials wear out faster with prolonged contact with a very hot surface (over 60 °C). Setting it to maximum is suitable only occasionally – for example, when you need to quickly dry a thick towel or wet textiles in winter.

Can I use a standard analog timer (sold in electrical stores) with DEVIrail?

Yes, provided the timer is rated for sufficient current. DEVIrail typically has a power consumption of up to 600 W, which at 230 V corresponds to a current of up to 2.6 A. Standard plug-in timers are rated for 10–16 A, so they are significantly oversized – this is not a problem, in fact, it ensures reliable operation. It is important that the timer is designed for resistive loads (which the dryer is), not just inductive ones.

How long does it take for DEVIrail to heat up to the set temperature?

It depends on the model and the current temperature in the bathroom. A smaller DEVIrail S at room temperature of 18–20 °C reaches the surface operating temperature (40–50 °C) in 10–20 minutes. A larger model W or U may take a bit longer due to the greater mass of metal that needs to accumulate heat. Therefore, I recommend setting the timer so that the dryer is turned on at least 20–30 minutes before the first morning use of the bathroom.

Is it worth buying a smart thermostat/outlet for DEVIrail, or is an analog timer sufficient?

For most households with a predictable routine, a digital plug-in timer for 15–30 € is fully sufficient – the investment pays off within a few months. A smart solution (50–100 € for a quality Wi-Fi outlet with energy consumption measurement) is worth it if you have an irregular daily schedule, want to have an overview of actual energy consumption, or manage multiple properties remotely. From the perspective of energy savings, the difference between a good digital timer and a smart solution is relatively small (10–20 %) – a much greater effect is achieved by switching from "no regulation at all" to "at least something".

What to do if the thermostat is not responding – the dryer runs continuously or does not heat up at all?

If the dryer runs continuously after a long time, the thermostat has either failed in the "on" position (stuck contact), or the setting is too high for the device to reach the desired temperature in the given room. If, on the contrary, the dryer does not heat up at all, the thermostat may have failed in the "off" position. Is it appropriate to leave DEVIrail turned on at night as additional heating for the bathroom?

From a safety perspective – yes, DEVIrail is designed for continuous operation. From an energy efficiency perspective – it depends on the situation. If the bathroom really needs heating at night (large area, poor insulation, bathroom on the north side), nighttime operation at a low set temperature (thermostat at minimum) may make sense. However, DEVIrail is not designed as a primary nighttime heating solution – for that, bathroom radiators with higher thermal output are more suitable. DEVIrail is primarily a towel dryer with the side effect of pleasant warmth in the bathroom.
