The condensate is slightly acidic (pH approx. 3.5–5), which over a few years would literally corrode a flue pipe made of an unsuitable material or damage seals that are not designed for it.

Besides material resistance, it's also about the fact that every boiler manufacturer designs the flue gas discharge system as a whole – boiler + connector + flue pipe – and tests it as one certified package. Using an incompatible flue pipe means the certification is no longer valid, and in the event of a fault or damage, the insurance company may refuse to pay out. These matters are investigated very thoroughly today in claims cases.

Protherm – How Their Flue Gas Discharge System Works

Protherm has historically been one of the strongest brands on the Slovak market – partly because production takes place directly in Martin. Their condensing boilers (Panther Condens, Tiger Condens and similar) use a standardized accessory system marked with internal codes ending in "KP" (Kondenzačný Protherm).

Coaxial flue pipes for Protherm are available in two basic diameters: 60/100 mm for smaller and medium boilers (typically up to 24–28 kW) and 80/125 mm for more powerful units or longer runs. The type of connection directly to the boiler is also important – not every Protherm boiler has the same outlet, and specialized adapters are used to transition to a different size.

For example, the Protherm adapter for flue pipes 60/100 mm A1KP is used precisely to connect the boiler to a coaxial run with a diameter of 60/100 mm. Analogously, for the larger size there is the Protherm adapter for flue pipes 80/125 mm A25KP, which is intended for higher-output boilers or longer runs, where a 60/100 mm system would not provide sufficient flue gas flow.

If two Protherm boilers need to be connected to a common flue pipe (for example a cascade connection of two boilers in the boiler room of a family house or smaller apartment building), the Protherm Splitting Element Ø 2 x 80 mm R2KP is used. This element splits one common combustion air supply and flue gas discharge into two branches, each Ø 80 mm, for connecting two separate boilers. Without this piece, a cascade is not possible without serious compromises in safety.

Protherm also offers complete "ready to install" sets – for example the Protherm horizontal set 60/100 mm – 0.8 m, S1KP, which is a complete kit for a horizontal passage through the wall including all necessary parts. For the customer and installer alike, this greatly simplifies the work – there's no need to figure out what fits with what, everything is verified and certified as a whole.

Installing Connections and Hydraulics on Protherm Boilers

In addition to the flue pipe, the correct hydraulic connection is also important when installing Protherm boilers. In the case of older copper piping (which is still very common in Slovak homes), the connection manifold for Protherm boilers for copper pipes is used. This manifold ensures the correct arrangement of connections (heating, hot water, gas) and at the same time allows a clean connection to the existing copper piping without the need to install adapters for a different material.

Vaillant – a Different Approach, Similar Principles

Vaillant is a German brand, and the complete range including its own flue gas discharge accessories is imported to the Slovak market. Vaillant's condensing boilers (ecoTEC pure, ecoTEC plus, ecoTEC pro) also use a coaxial system of 60/100 mm or 80/125 mm, however their accessories are not physically interchangeable with Protherm without an adapter.

Why? Because although the outer diameters of the pipes are the same, they differ in:

  • Type and profile of the sealing – Vaillant uses a different shape of O-rings and sealing surfaces than Protherm
  • Locking/latching system – bayonet or screw connections have different dimensions
  • Condensate drainage angle – different slopes of the built-in drainage elements
  • Pressure losses – each manufacturer calibrates the boiler's fan to the specific resistance of its own flue pipe

This last point is perhaps the most important technical one. The fan (flue gas fan) of a condensing boiler is set to certain back-pressure values. Bosch and Junkers

Bosch and Junkers are technically the same platform (Bosch Thermotechnik), which simplifies things – accessories are largely interchangeable between these two brands. Their boilers (Condens 7000, GC9000) also use a coaxial system of 60/100 mm and 80/125 mm, but the seals and bayonet connections are again specific. Original Bosch accessories are available on the Slovak market, as well as several universal systems (for example Brilon/Schiedel or Almeva) which, with the correct adapter, work together with Bosch boilers.

An important point with Bosch boilers: some models have the flue outlet oriented upward (top exhaust), others to the side. This physically limits what type of accessory can be directly used without modification.

Buderus

Buderus belongs to Bosch Thermotechnik, so many Buderus boilers (Logamax plus GB172, GB192) share the same body platform as some Bosch boilers. Nevertheless, Buderus lists its own part numbers for accessories, and the boiler catalog contains precisely defined compatible sets. The Buderus warranty is tied to the use of original or approved accessories – the manufacturer explicitly states this in the service terms.

Viessmann

Viessmann (Vitodens 050-W, 100-W, 200-W) has a reputation for the highest quality, and its accessory system reflects that – thoroughly engineered, but more expensive. Viessmann flue pipes are mostly made of plastic PP (polypropylene) or stainless steel and are designed as a modular system. Adapters to other systems exist, but Viessmann service departments are reluctant to see them in warranty documentation.

Baxi and Ferroli

These Italian brands take a different approach – historically they have been somewhat more lenient about using certified universal flue pipes from third parties (e.g. Spiroflex, Ubbink, Centrotherm). Baxi even lists compatible third-party sets directly in some documentation. Nevertheless, we always recommend checking the specific boiler model, as newer generations (Baxi Luna Duo-tec, Platinum+) have stricter requirements.

On the market there are so-called universal coaxial flue pipes (for example from manufacturers Ubbink, Centrotherm, Brilon, Schiedel). These are designed to work with multiple boilers from different manufacturers via adapters. The question is: when is such a solution acceptable?

When it's fine:

  • The boiler is out of warranty and you handle the service yourself or through an independent technician
  • You use a certified universal system with the appropriate adapter for the given boiler
  • The hydraulic resistance of the system is within the limits permitted by the boiler manufacturer (must be verified in the documentation)
  • The diameter, maximum length and number of bends comply with the boiler's parameters

When it's not appropriate:

  • The boiler is still under warranty – any non-original flue pipe can be grounds for warranty rejection
  • You are planning an inspection by a service technician tied to the brand
  • You cannot verify whether the specific universal system has the necessary certificates for the given boiler type
  • It concerns equipment in an apartment building where the administrator or energy audit is strict

Boilers in the 25–35 kW output range usually have either 60/100 mm with an adapter to 80/125 mm, or a direct 80/125 mm outlet. A practical example: a customer had a Protherm Panther 25 KOO. He wanted to extend the flue pipe by 2 meters because it stopped short at the wall due to a thicker insulated cladding.
