Despite being a technically well-engineered product, customers regularly encounter a number of questions before purchase, during installation, and during operation – from choosing the correct output, through electrical installation requirements, to connecting the boiler with photovoltaic panels.

Is the Protherm Ray really economical, or is electricity too expensive?

This is question number one. The answer depends on context, which is why it is important to distinguish between several scenarios.

Pure electricity vs. gas: If we compare the operating costs of the Ray with an older gas condensing boiler and you have a standard electricity tariff (without photovoltaics, without a night tariff), gas comes out cheaper – sometimes significantly. In Slovakia, electricity has a considerably higher unit cost per kWh of heat than natural gas. On the other hand, you avoid annual gas service costs (inspections, burner cleaning), insurance and chimney technology.

With photovoltaics, the situation changes dramatically: Customers who have a PV system of at least 5–10 kWp installed and use the surplus energy for hot water heating or directly for space heating via the Ray achieve operating costs comparable to or lower than gas. The Protherm Ray has an input for HDO (ripple control/remote load control), but more and more customers connect it to a PV system via an SMA Home Manager, Fronius Smart Meter, or a simple SSR relay. Night tariff (DD): With a tariff featuring a reduced night rate (e.g. DD8 or an HDO-controlled tariff) and a larger storage tank, it is possible to heat primarily during cheap hours and "live" off the stored heat during the day. The Protherm Ray supports time programming precisely for this purpose.

From practice: a customer with a family house of approx. 120 m², a new build, Ray 12 kW + 200 L storage tank + 8 kWp PV system, paid around €900–1,100 for electricity including domestic hot water for the entire 2022/23 heating season (a relatively harsh winter). That is comparable to gas at prices in that period.

What output of Protherm Ray do I need for my house?

Choosing the correct output is crucial. An oversized boiler costs unnecessarily more and works in short cycles (so-called cycling), which is unfavorable for any boiler. An undersized boiler cannot cover the heat loss of the house on freezing days.

Basic rule of thumb for typical Slovak conditions (design outdoor temperature of –15 °C):

  • 6 kW – small apartments, studios, holiday cottages up to approx. 50–60 m² with good insulation → Protherm Ray 6KE
  • 9 kW – smaller family houses or apartments of 60–90 m² (new build or well-insulated renovation) → Protherm Ray 9KE
  • 12 kW – houses of 90–130 m² (new build), or 70–100 m² (older construction with an insulated façade) → Protherm Ray 12KE
  • 14 kW – houses of 130–160 m² or older houses with poorer insulation → Protherm Ray 14KE

These figures are only indicative. For an accurate calculation, the correct approach is to determine the heat loss of the building according to the STN EN 12831 standard. If your designer or energy certifier has calculated the heat loss, look for a boiler with an output equal to this value (or slightly higher, max. 10–15%). What are the electrical installation requirements for the Protherm Ray?

This is one area where customers most often overestimate the simplicity of installation. The Protherm Ray is a three-phase device (with the exception of the 6KE model, which can be single-phase – it depends on the specific version and connection). The requirements vary according to output:

  • 6 kW: Typically 1× 400 V / 16 A or 3× 400 V / 10 A, CYKY 4×2.5 mm² cable (three-phase) or CYKY 3×4 mm² cable (single-phase)
  • 9 kW: 3× 400 V / 16 A, CYKY 5×2.5 mm² cable
  • 12 kW: 3× 400 V / 20 A, CYKY 5×4 mm² cable
  • 14 kW: 3× 400 V / 25 A, CYKY 5×6 mm² cable
  • 18 kW: 3× 400 V / 32 A, CYKY 5×10 mm² cable

The following rule always applies: the sizing of the circuit breaker and cable must correspond to the actual power input of the device, not just its nominal output. With the Ray 18KE (power input approx. 18 kW = 26 A/phase), you need a 3× 32 A circuit breaker and a cable of at least 5×10 mm². Note from practice: We encounter cases where a customer has an old household installation in a family house with a main circuit breaker of 3× 25 A and wants to install a Ray 18KE. The boiler alone needs 32 A/phase. In such a case, it simply will not work without upgrading the main circuit breaker (which requires the consent of the distribution company). Address this issue before ordering the boiler – not after.

Must the Protherm Ray be installed by an authorized service technician?

Yes, on two levels:

The electrical part: Any work on the high-current wiring (connection to the switchboard, cable routing) must be carried out by a person with electrotechnical qualification according to Decree No. 508/2009 Z. z. (at minimum §21 – an instructed person is not sufficient; you need §22 or §23). Upon completion, an inspection report must be issued by an inspection technician.

Boiler installation and warranty: Protherm (Vaillant Group) makes the validity of the warranty conditional on the first commissioning being carried out by an authorized service technician. This technician must perform the first heat-up, set the basic parameters, and register the device in the manufacturer's warranty system. Without this step, a warranty claim may be complicated or rejected.

The hydraulic installation part (pipework, connection to the heating system) may be carried out by a qualified plumber, but again – not a layperson without experience. The Protherm Ray has a built-in circulation pump and a safety thermostat, but proper venting, filling and pressure setting of the system is a prerequisite for reliable operation.

How does regulation and the weather-compensation curve work in the Protherm Ray?

The Protherm Ray has an integrated control system with several control options. For the average user, the following modes are important:

  • Fixed boiler water temperature: The boiler maintains the set water temperature regardless of outdoor conditions. Simple, but not optimal in terms of consumption.
  • Weather-compensated control: The boiler changes the water temperature according to the outdoor temperature – the colder it is outside, the higher the boiler water temperature. Requires an outdoor temperature sensor (not standard equipment). This control is more energy-efficient, especially with underfloor heating.
  • OpenTherm control: Modern digital communication between the boiler and an intelligent controller (e.g. Siemens QAA, Vaillant vSMART, Honeywell T6R and others). The controller "talks" to the boiler and continuously adjusts the required water temperature according to the actual needs of the house. The result is the most economical and most precise control.

Can the Protherm Ray also heat domestic hot water?

Yes, but not directly – the Protherm Ray is a boiler without a built-in DHW tank. To heat hot water, you need an external storage water heater (a cylinder) with a heat exchanger. The boiler heats the water in the heating circuit, which passes through the exchanger in the tank and draws domestic hot water from it.

In practice, tanks from 80 to 200 liters are used (typically 120–150 L for a typical family). The Ray must be set to prioritize filling the DHW tank before heating – this function is called DHW priority and is set in the boiler or controller menu.

Important note: some customers want to save money and buy a Ray without a tank, intending to add one later. If you have a household of 3–4 people, a DHW tank is essential – an electric instantaneous water heater would at the same time significantly increase the power input and could not supply multiple draw-off points simultaneously.

What are the differences between the Protherm Raja and the Protherm Ray?

The Protherm Raja is the predecessor of the Ray model. Both boilers are made by Protherm (Vaillant Group) and are very similar in terms of hydraulics, but there are important differences between them:

  • Control electronics: The Ray has a newer generation control board with better compatibility with external controllers (OpenTherm, weather compensation).
  • Display and controls: The Ray has a clearer color display and a more intuitive menu. The Raja had simpler rotary controls.
  • Communication: The Ray natively supports the OpenTherm protocol; with the Raja, this option was limited or required an adapter.
  • Power modulation: Both boilers work with cascaded switching of the heating elements (neither is continuously modulating like an inverter), but the Ray has better cascade control thanks to its newer electronics.
  • Availability of spare parts: The Raja is older, and parts are still available, but the manufacturer may gradually phase them out. If you have an older Raja and are considering a replacement, the Ray is the natural successor.

How long does it take to heat a house, and what about the boiler's warm-up time?

An electric boiler has the advantage of instant start-up – unlike solid fuel, it has no "kindling" phase and reaches full output almost immediately. On a cold start, the Protherm Ray reaches the set boiler water temperature (e.g. 60 °C) within a few minutes. The question, however, is not how long it takes the boiler to heat up, but how long it takes to heat the entire house.

With a typical radiator system and an outdoor temperature of –5 °C, the house is normally heated to a comfortable temperature within 1–3 hours, depending on its size, thermal capacity and insulation properties. Underfloor heating has significantly higher thermal inertia – the floor heats up more slowly, but it releases heat evenly and for longer.

For this reason, it is not recommended to use the Ray boiler in on/off mode (i.e. turning it on in the morning and off overnight). The correct approach is to set a night setback (e.g. lowering the room temperature to 17–18 °C overnight and at the weekend when away) and let the boiler run continuously. A weekly programmer or smart thermostat is the right choice here.

What to do when an error code appears on the Protherm Ray?

The Protherm Ray displays error codes in the format Exxx or Fxxx (where xxx is a number). Some of them are just warnings, others lead to the boiler locking out. Here are the most common ones from practice:

  • E01 / F01: Boiler water temperature sensor (NTC) fault. Check the sensor wiring, or request a replacement.
  • E05 / F05: External outdoor temperature sensor fault. The boiler usually switches to a backup mode, but weather-compensated control does not work.
  • E07: Safety thermostat (STB) – the boiler has overheated. Causes: insufficient water in the system, closed valves, malfunctioning pump. Reset only after removing the cause.
  • E10: Low water pressure – add water to the system via the filling valve to a value of 1.0–1.5 bar when cold.
  • E20–E29: Power module faults (triacs, switched heating elements). These are usually resolved by service technicians replacing the module.

What maintenance does the Protherm Ray require?

An electric boiler has significantly lower maintenance requirements than a gas boiler – there is no burner, burner seal, combustion chamber, or condensate. Nevertheless, maintenance should not be underestimated.

What to check annually:

  • Water pressure in the system (should be 1.0–1.5 bar when cold, max. 2.5 bar when hot)
  • Functionality of the venting valves and expansion vessel (the diaphragm vessel should have the correct pre-charge pressure)
  • Condition of the anode in the DHW tank (if you have a combined tank with a magnesium anode – replace every 2–3 years)
  • Check of the sealing of pipe joints and fittings
  • Cleaning the filter in front of the boiler (round Y-strainer or magnetic filter – at least once a year)

Every 3–5 years:

  • Service inspection by an authorized technician (checking the heating elements, boiler seals, electronics)
  • Chemical treatment of the system water (corrosion inhibitor, or flushing in the case of increased water hardness)

Is the Protherm Ray suitable for underfloor heating?

Yes, it is actually one of its most advantageous applications. Underfloor heating operates with low-temperature circuits (typically 35–45 °C), which is ideal for an electric boiler – the heating elements work at a lower temperature, the surface capacity of the water is higher, and heat losses are minimal.

With underfloor heating, correctly setting the weather-compensation curve is especially important – the curve must be "flat" (the boiler does not need to produce 70 °C even in frost, 40–50 °C is enough). This setting significantly extends the boiler's service life (fewer cycles, less thermal stress) and reduces consumption.

If you have a house with underfloor heating and are considering the Protherm Ray, we recommend connecting it directly to an outdoor controller with weather compensation – e.g. Vaillant vSMART or Siemens QAA 75. The boiler will then work intelligently without manual intervention.

Can the Protherm Ray be connected to a smart home or controlled via a mobile phone?

The Protherm Ray itself does not have built-in Wi-Fi or its own mobile app. However, using an external controller, this is possible:

  • Vaillant vSMART / eRELAX: Vaillant Group (which owns Protherm) offers its own Wi-Fi controllers that communicate with the boiler via OpenTherm and allow control via an app.
  • Honeywell evohome, Siemens LOGO! and others: Most modern smart thermostats with an OpenTherm output are compatible with the Protherm Ray.
  • Integration with Home Assistant / Loxone: For technically skilled customers, there are OpenTherm bridge devices (e.g. DIYLESS OT Bridge) that enable communication between the boiler and a home automation system.

It is important that the controller is connected via the OpenTherm bus (a 2-wire connection at the boiler terminals). A simple on/off thermostat also works, but you lose the benefits of water temperature modulation.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can I use the Protherm Ray in summer only for domestic hot water heating?

Yes. The Ray has a separate "DHW only" mode (summer mode), in which it turns off the heating circuit and only ensures the heating of the storage cylinder. This is standard summer operation. The boiler will only start the pump when the tank needs reheating. Consumption in this mode is minimal and depends on the tank volume and the required DHW temperature (usually 55–60 °C).

Why is the pressure in my system lower over time – do I have to keep topping up water?

A gradual drop in pressure (e.g. from 1.5 bar to 1.0 bar over a few months) can have several causes: a micro-leak in the system (pipe joints, radiator valves, seals), a damaged expansion vessel diaphragm (lost its pre-charge pressure), or venting valves that release water along with the air. If you have to top up water every 2–4 weeks, call a service technician – this is not normal and may indicate a leak that will get worse over time.

What is the service life of the Protherm Ray and its heating elements?

A properly installed and maintained Protherm Ray has a service life of 15–25 years. The heating elements are a consumable part – with hard water (over 30 °dH), limescale can build up, which shortens their lifespan. Regular chemical water treatment (inhibitor, softener dosing) can significantly extend the life of the elements. Replacing one element is a routine service task that takes no more than an hour.

Is it possible to connect two Protherm Ray boilers in a cascade?

The Protherm Ray as such is not primarily designed for a cascade connection of two units (unlike some commercial boilers). For larger buildings where one boiler is not enough, it is preferable to choose a higher output (Ray 18KE) or combine the boiler with a storage tank and controlled charging. A cascade of two Ray boilers is technically possible, but requires an external controller with cascade support and is a solution more suitable for experienced designers.

How much does it cost to run a Protherm Ray annually?

The approximate annual electricity consumption depends on many factors: the size and insulation of the house, climate zone, comfortable room temperature, type of heating system and control. For a 120 m² family house, a new build of energy class B, at a medium altitude in Slovakia, with a Protherm Ray 12KE and properly set controls, the realistic annual consumption including DHW is in the range of 12,000–18,000 kWh. At an average price of €0.18–0.22/kWh, this represents €2,160–3,960/year. These figures are approximate and can be significantly influenced by insulation, controls and possible photovoltaics.

What should I do before first switching on the Protherm Ray after installation?

Before the first heat-up, the system must be completely filled with water (pressure of 1.0–1.5 bar when cold), vented (all radiators, pump, tank), the electrical installation checked by an inspection technician, and an authorized Protherm service technician called for first commissioning. It is not recommended to turn on the boiler without a full system – there is a risk of dry-run overheating and damage to the heating elements.
