How to choose a thermostat for an older Vaillant or Protherm boiler – a complete guide
If you have a gas boiler from Vaillant or Protherm that is more than five to ten years old and you are wondering whether to replace, upgrade or keep your current thermostat, this article is exactly for you. Over the years of practice, I have seen dozens of situations where a customer bought an incompatible thermostat because the seller did not explain the difference between protocols, boiler types and connection methods. The result was unnecessary trips, returning the product and delays. This text is intended to help you make the right choice right from the start.
Why choosing a thermostat for an older boiler is different from a new one
Modern Vaillant and Protherm boilers, manufactured roughly from 2015–2018 and later, communicate with the thermostat via digital bus systems: Vaillant uses its own eBUS protocol, and Protherm (which belongs to the Vaillant group) uses the same eBUS, although in some older generations it also has a different terminal block wiring. Older boilers – and this article is specifically about them – may communicate via a simplified version of eBUS, or they may operate only with a standard two-wire no-voltage contact (so-called "on/off" control).
This distinction is crucial, because it determines the actual functionality the thermostat can provide. A boiler communicating only via an on/off contact cannot provide the thermostat with information about its status, boiler water temperature or error codes – the thermostat simply closes or opens the contact and the boiler reacts. In contrast, a boiler with eBUS communication can share dozens of parameters with the thermostat, including the equithermal curve, DHW (hot water) blocking, burner modulation and more.
How to find out what type of Vaillant or Protherm boiler you have at home
The first step is to identify the boiler. The model label is usually found on the front panel under the service cover, or on the left side of the boiler. It is important to note the full model code, for example VUW 240/3-5, VU 182/3-5, or for Protherm models Panther 25 KOO, Tiger 24 KTZ, and similar. From this code, you can directly look up the service documentation and a list of compatible thermostats.
A practical shortcut: look at the boiler's terminal block. If you only have terminals marked, for example, RT (room thermostat) or TA – it is an on/off input. If you see terminals marked eBUS (or just two terminals labeled „Bus" or „BUS +/–") – the boiler supports digital communication. Some older models have both – an adaptable input, where you can choose which one to use.
Be careful of one very common mistake from practice: a customer has a Vaillant VUW model from the „3-5" series (manufactured around 2005–2012) and thinks only a basic thermostat is suitable for it. In fact, many of these boilers have an eBUS terminal block and can work with a full-featured equithermal thermostat – you just need to know where the terminals are.
Overview of older Vaillant calorMATIC thermostats
Vaillant sold several generations of thermostats under the calorMATIC brand, and all of them are to some extent compatible with boilers via eBUS. For older Vaillant boilers, the following models are particularly relevant, which you can find in the category older thermostat types:
- Vaillant calorMATIC 360f – wireless version of the thermostat, intended for Vaillant boilers with eBUS interface; communicates at a frequency of 868 MHz. Ideal if you do not want to run a cable through your entire apartment or house. An external outdoor temperature sensor is not included in the base version, but the thermostat works with indoor temperature and a time program.
- Vaillant calorMATIC 392 – wired version of the thermostat with equithermal function, i.e. requires an external temperature sensor (probe). The thermostat controls the boiler according to the outdoor temperature and set curves, which is a big advantage in terms of energy savings. Intended for boilers without OpenTherm function (i.e. for Vaillant eBUS boilers).
- Vaillant calorMATIC 392f – wireless version of model 392, combining equithermal control with wireless signal transmission between the room panel and the base unit at the boiler. A very practical option for renovations without the possibility of cabling.
- Vaillant calorMATIC 430 – a higher-end wired thermostat with a color display and extended programming. Supports equithermal control, heating circuit control and in some configurations also hot water heating. Suitable for more complex installations.

Ecotermic vs. room regulation – what it actually means and why it matters

Room regulation (thermostat) works simply: it measures the temperature in the room where it is installed and turns on the boiler when the temperature drops below the set value. When the desired temperature is reached, the boiler turns off. The advantage is simplicity and low cost. The disadvantage is delay – the boiler reacts only after the house has cooled down, not preventively.
Ecotermic regulation works on a different principle: it measures the outside air temperature and continuously adjusts the boiler water temperature accordingly. The logic is that the colder it is outside, the higher the water temperature must be in the radiators to keep the house warm. This relationship is defined by the so-called ecotermic curve – a line in a graph where the X-axis is the outside temperature and the Y-axis is the required water temperature. Ecotermic regulation is more energy efficient because the boiler does not create unnecessary thermal "spikes". The burner modulates smoothly and the water temperature in the system is always optimal for the conditions. In practice, people with ecotermic regulation report lower gas consumption in the range of 10–20 % compared to a simple on/off regulation – of course, it depends on the type of building, ventilation and usage habits.
Decision tree: which calorMATIC model to choose
Situations in practice often repeat. Here are typical scenarios I encounter:
Scenario 1: Panel building or apartment, eBUS boiler, no possibility to run a cable
An apartment in a panel building or a brick apartment after reconstruction with new floors and plaster – running a cable from the boiler to the living room is unrealistic without demolition. In this case, the obvious choice is a wireless regulation. If you don't need the ecotermic function (for example, you don't have access to the façade for an outdoor sensor or you are not interested in this function), you choose Vaillant calorMATIC 360f – a simpler wireless regulation, operating on the principle of a room thermostat with eBUS communication.
Scenario 2: Family house, eBUS boiler, interest in energy savings
In this case, ecotermic regulation is almost a necessity. If it is possible to run a cable (new construction or reconstruction in advance), the ideal option is the wired Vaillant calorMATIC 392 – stable connection, no problems with signal interference, the outdoor sensor can be easily mounted on the north façade of the house. If cabling is not possible, Vaillant calorMATIC 392f comes into play – identical functionality, but wireless communication between the room panel and the base unit at the boiler. However, the outdoor temperature sensor is always connected by cable directly to the base unit/boiler, not wirelessly.
Scenario 3: Larger house, multiple heating circuits, more complex installation
If you have heating plus a hot water tank (boiler), or multiple heating circuits (e.g. underfloor heating + radiators), you are entering a world where regulations with higher capacity are needed. For such cases, the Vaillant calorMATIC 430 (wired) or Vaillant calorMATIC 430f (wireless) are intended. These models allow control of individual heating circuits, connection to a mixing valve and complex time programs.
Scenario 4: Old Protherm boiler without eBUS – only on/off input
If you have an older Protherm boiler that does not have an eBUS bus, the situation is different. You can only connect a simple thermostat to such a boiler via a no-voltage contact. calorMATIC regulations are primarily intended for Vaillant boilers (or Protherm with eBUS), because they communicate via eBUS. With a purely on/off boiler, you could also connect a calorMATIC (via the appropriate terminals), but you would lose all the advantages of digital communication – the regulation would work only as a simple switch. In this case, it makes more sense to consider replacing the boiler or choosing a cheaper on/off thermostat. Outdoor temperature sensor – when and where to install it
If you decide on ecotermic regulation (models 392, 392f, 430, 430f), an outdoor temperature sensor (NTC sensor, typically NTC 10 kΩ at 25 °C) is an essential part of the installation. This sensor measures the actual outdoor temperature and sends the information to the regulation unit.
Correct placement of the sensor is important – it is not just a technical formality. The rules are as follows:
- The sensor should be placed on the north or northeast façade of the building, where it is not exposed to direct sunlight. Sunlight would distort the measured temperature and cause the control system to behave illogically (it would reduce output, even though it is actually cold outside).
- The sensor must not be near ventilation openings, air conditioning units, windows or doors – any additional heat source would falsify the measurement.
- Mounting height: it is recommended to install the sensor at a height of 2–3 m above ground level, so that it is not affected by heat reflected from the ground or snow.
- The sensor cable is usually two-core, with a recommended cross-section of at least 0.5 mm². The maximum cable length is approximately 50–100 m (depending on the specific model of the control system).
The sensor is usually supplied together with the control system or as an accessory. In the case of wireless models (392f, 430f), it is important to know that the outdoor sensor is always connected by cable to the base station located near the boiler – this cable must be planned in advance.
Installation and wiring – basic principles and what to check before purchasing

- Boiler terminal block: check that the boiler has eBUS terminals and that they are not occupied by another control system or a jumper. Some boilers have a bridge (jumper) on the eBUS terminals from the factory, which must be removed when connecting the control system.
- Firmware compatibility: very old boilers (before the year 2000) may use a different variant of the eBUS protocol. This is rare in practice, but if in doubt, contact Vaillant's technical department or your dealer.
- Base station power supply: wireless models (360f, 392f, 430f) have a base station installed near the boiler. This station is powered either directly from the boiler (via eBUS), from a separate 230 V power supply, or from a mains adapter. Check before installation which option applies to your model.
- Wireless signal range: in panel buildings with thick concrete walls, the range may be significantly lower than the declared 100–150 m in open space. In a real apartment building, expect 20–40 m through walls. If the boiler is in the basement and the room is on the third floor, coverage problems may occur.
Protherm Thermolink and its relationship to older Protherm boilers
Protherm is a brand belonging to the Vaillant group, so the eBUS technology is shared. Older Protherm boilers (Panthers, Tiger, Leopard) also use eBUS communication and are compatible with the calorMATIC series of controls. In addition, Protherm sold its own control system Thermolink, which is functionally equivalent to the corresponding calorMATIC models.
Compatibility question: you can connect calorMATIC to an older Protherm boiler via eBUS just as you would to a Vaillant boiler. Wired vs. wireless connection – what is better in practice

Wired connection is more reliable, without signal dropouts, without battery changes, and without interference from other devices. We recommend it whenever it is structurally feasible. The cable between the boiler and the room panel is usually two-core (eBUS), with a cross-section of 0.5–1.5 mm² and a length of up to 50 m. The cable can run in existing conduits, pipes or be pulled under plaster.
Wireless connection is ideal for renovation without demolition, in historic buildings or in rented apartments, where construction work is not possible. Main risks: signal interference in thick-walled buildings, need for battery replacement in the room unit (typically 2× AA, lasting 1–2 years), occasional communication dropouts. For most standard apartments and houses, Vaillant's wireless controls are reliable and trouble-free.
Energy savings and return on investment in a new control system
One of the questions customers ask most often is: is it worth buying a new control system if the boiler works with an old thermostat? The answer depends on the situation, but generally speaking: if your current thermostat is a simple bimetallic or a cheap electronic one without an equithermal function, switching to an equithermal control system with eBUS communication will typically pay for itself within 1–3 seasons in a family house with an average gas consumption of around 1,500–2,500 m³/year.
A practical example: a house of about 180 m², boiler Vaillant VUW 242/3-5 from 2008 (eBUS, functional), original bimetallic thermostat Honeywell. After installation of calorMATIC 392 with an outdoor sensor and correct setting of the equithermal curve, the customer measured a gas consumption reduction from 1,850 m³ to 1,520 m³ per season – that is, about 18%. At a gas price of 0.08 €/kWh and calorific value of 10.55 kWh/m³, this represents a saving of about 280 € per year. Cost of the control system: around 150–200 €. Of course, these are real numbers from a specific case and results will vary. An important role is played by the correct setting of the equithermal curve, the thermal insulation of the building and the way it is used (night setback, heating times, etc.).
Is it worth repairing an old control system, or is a replacement better?

Is the calorMATIC 392 compatible with a Protherm Panther boiler from 2009?
Yes, in most cases. Protherm Panther boilers from that era are equipped with an eBUS interface and the Vaillant calorMATIC control communicates using the same protocol. Before purchasing, check for the presence of eBUS terminals on the boiler's terminal block. If the boiler does not have eBUS, you can connect the calorMATIC only as an on/off thermostat (via the appropriate terminals), but you will lose the eCO mode and modulation functions.
Can I have a wireless boiler control but connect the external sensor via cable?
Yes, that is exactly how it works. For models 392f and 430f, the room panel is wireless (communicates with the base unit at the boiler), but the external temperature sensor is always connected by cable directly to the base unit or directly to the boiler. These models do not support wireless external sensors.
What happens if the wireless boiler control loses the signal (e.g., due to a dead battery)?
In most models, the boiler continues to operate according to the last command (usually it remains on at minimum output or at the last set temperature). The control regains control once the signal is restored. Batteries in the room panel should last 1–2 years of normal use. Low battery status is usually indicated by a symbol on the display.
Is professional installation of the boiler control necessary or can I do it myself?
Technically, the installation is relatively simple – it involves connecting two eBUS wires and possibly two wires for the external sensor. What is the difference between model 392 and 430 – is it worth paying extra?
Compared to the 392, the calorMATIC 430 adds the ability to control multiple heating circuits (e.g., radiators and underfloor heating separately via a mixing valve), a color display with more intuitive control, and extended time program settings. If you have a simple heating system with one circuit, the model 392 is fully sufficient. If you have or plan to have multiple circuits, a hot water tank, or possibly a solar system, the model 430 is a reasonable investment.
Are older calorMATIC controls still available and will they remain functional in a few years?
Yes, these controls are available as replacements or new installations precisely because there is a huge installed base of older Vaillant and Protherm boilers in Europe.
