Installation of a sink into a kitchen worktop: complete step-by-step guide
Installing a sink into a kitchen worktop is one of those tasks most people do once every ten or fifteen years – during a complete kitchen renovation or when replacing a damaged sink. That's why there are many uncertainties around it: what requires a professional, what you can do yourself, how to do it so that there are no leaks, a cracked worktop or a damaged sink right after the first water fill. In this article, I will go through the entire process in detail, with specific dimensions, practical tips and warnings against the most common mistakes.

What you will need: tools and materials
Before starting the work, prepare everything you need. Nothing slows down the installation as much as interrupting and searching for a tool at the wrong moment – especially when you have silicone in your hands and the worktop is lifted.
Tools
- Electric straight-cut saw (jigsaw/scroll saw) with a fine blade for wood or DTD – ideally with more than 20 TPI teeth
- Drill with a clutch and a set of drill bits (for pilot holes 6–8 mm)
- Electric sander or sandpaper (120, 180 grit)
- Flat ruler/pencil and measuring tape
- 60 cm spirit level
- Silicone gun
- Putty knife or old knife for removing excess silicone
- Clamps or several C-clamps 50–80 mm for holding the sink during the silicone curing
- Wrenches: adjustable wrench and mounting wrench for the trap (or special pliers)
- Bucket and rags – always, without exception
Materials and consumables
- Sanitary transparent or white/grey silicone (minimum operating temperature +80 °C, mycologically resistant)
- Impregnation for DTD cut edges (e.g. liquid wax, special edge paste or at least clear varnish)
- Mounting screws/clips for the sink (standard, but check before starting)
- Trap, waste outlets, possibly connecting pipe for a double sink
- Flexible water supply hoses (non-rusting braided, at least G1/2, I recommend 50 cm flexible length)
- Seals for the faucet (usually included in the faucet package)
Sink installation types: undermount vs. topmount vs. flush
Before you start cutting, you need to clearly know what type of installation your sink requires – this significantly changes the cutting process and the work with silicone.
Topmount (inset/overmount) sink has a rim around the edge that lies on the surface of the worktop. It is the easiest type to install, the cutout can be 2–4 mm smaller than the outer dimension of the sink. This type is typical for mid-range stainless steel sinks and some granites.
Undermount sink is mounted from the bottom of the worktop and the top edge of the worktop is visible. It requires a worktop with a visible edge (usually stone, Silestone or composite) and a precise cutout. Undermount installation is not recommended for DTD worktops without special edge treatment.
Flush-mounted sink is level with the surface of the worktop – the top surface of the sink is exactly in the plane of the work surface. It requires the highest precision in cutting and is common in premium granite or composite sinks.
Most granite sinks in everyday kitchen practice are either topmount or flush-mounted. For example, granite sink Sinks BEST 780 Granblack or granite sink Sinks SOLO 560 Milk are designed as topmount/flush-mounted – the manufacturer always provides a mounting template according to which the cutout is made.
Step 1: Preparation and measuring the cutout
The most important step, where the most mistakes are made. An incorrectly measured cutout means either a too small hole (sink does not fit) or a too large hole (the rim does not cover the mistake). With DTD or laminated worktops, correction is not possible – the worktop goes to the trash.
How to measure the cutout correctly
The worktop should ideally still be unmounted – placed on the kitchen line roughly. If you are renovating and the worktop is already firmly mounted, you have to measure in situ, which is more difficult, but manageable.
- Distance from the front edge of the worktop: At least 50 mm from the edge, standard 80–100 mm. Reason: there must be space in front of the sink for the faucet, and possibly for your hands when working. At the same time, you must keep at least 30–40 mm from the back edge to allow space for the silicone seal and mounting.
- Centering the sink: If the sink is over one cabinet (e.g. 600 mm module), center it on the cabinet axis. If it is over two cabinets (e.g. 1200 mm double module), the cutout can be slightly shifted according to the water supply layout.
- Cutout according to the template: Most manufacturers provide a cardboard template. Place it on the worktop, check the centering with a spirit level and from several angles. Trace the entire outline with a pencil.
- Pilot holes for the saw: Drill a hole 8–10 mm in each corner of the cutout (or at least one). This hole must be inside the cutout line, not on it. It is used to guide the saw blade.
Practical tip from practice: Before cutting, apply masking tape to the area where the cut will be made. The saw then glides over the tape, not over the laminate surface, minimizing the risk of scratches or chipping of the laminate.
Step 2: Cutting the hole in the worktop
A straight-line saw (also known as a jigsaw or puzzle saw) is the most suitable tool for this purpose. Set the saw speed to a medium setting, without stalling. Cut slowly and evenly – no sudden accelerations, as corners are prone to chipping the laminate.
- Insert the blade into the pilot hole and start cutting along the pencil line.
- Cut corners with extra care – for a clean rounded corner, you can first drill a larger hole (25–30 mm) in the corner and then cut only the straight sections.
- As you near the end of the cut, support the cut-out piece from below with your hand or keep it propped up – it may fall out and break off a piece of the edge of the worktop.
- As soon as the cut is completed, immediately treat all cut edges with impregnation or waterproof varnish. DTD boards are prone to swelling from water at any imperfectly sealed location.
After impregnation, let the edges dry for at least 30 minutes before proceeding with further work.
Step 3: Pre-assembly of the sink and preparation for installation
Never install a sink empty and unprepared. Mount all connections, taps, and trap before installation – while you still have free access to the sink from below, above, and from the sides.
What to pre-assemble before installation
- Tap: Insert the tap into the tap hole (standard 35 mm or 52 mm), and tighten the nut from below. The tap hole is usually in the manufacturer's template or on the edge of the sink itself.
- Drainage baskets/vents: Install a drain vent with a gasket on each basin of the sink. Do not use silicone – apply silicone to the lower ring of the vent and the contact area with the sink bottom.
- Trap: Assemble the trap roughly (without sealing) and test whether it is long enough to connect to the wall drain. The typical distance from the bottom of the sink to the wall drain is 350–450 mm – if you have a double sink or plan to install a draining board, check whether the trap has enough branches.
- Flexible water connections: Connect to the tap (standard G3/8 or G1/2 thread), leaving the free ends for connection to the angle valve.
If you plan to connect a black draining board Sinks 450×200×102 mm, or a practical draining board/drip tray VARIO COMPLET black, always pre-assemble it and check that it fits into the kitchen cabinet and does not interfere with the trap. The dimensions of the drip trays and basins are fixed, and the drain and trap must be placed so that there is enough space for them.
Step 4: Application of silicone and installation of the sink
This is the step where it is decided whether the installation will last for years without problems, or you will start dealing with leaks after the first month. The silicone must be of high quality (sanitary, not construction), applied correctly, and the board must be clean and dry.
Procedure for applying silicone
- Clean the surface of the worktop around the cut and the lower part of the sink rim with thinner or acetone and let it dry.
- Apply an even, continuous strip of silicone to the lower rim of the sink – the thickness of the "worm" is about 5–8 mm, around the entire perimeter. Don't be stingy, but also don't overdo it – excess can be pushed out and removed with a cloth.
- Gently insert the sink into the cut – from top to bottom, center it and press it lightly. Do not slide it horizontally across the worktop – the silicone would smear.
- Check the uniformity of the gaps (if the rim is visible) on all sides.
Securing with clips
Most sinks are supplied with plastic or metal clips (clips/anchors), which snap into special grooves on the side of the sink and are tightened with a screw from below – they push the sink upward toward the worktop and prevent movement. The number of clips depends on the size of the sink: for a single sink type 560–600 mm, 4–6 clips are sufficient, for a larger one 780–900 mm, use 6–8 clips.
Tighten the clips evenly, gradually (not one side to the end and then the other). Excess silicone that oozes out from the rim should be wiped immediately with a damp cloth or sponge – after it hardens, it is much harder to remove without damaging the surface.
Let the silicone cure for at least 24 hours before using the sink for the first time. Most sanitary silicones reach full strength after 48–72 hours.
Step 5: Connecting the drain and water supply
Once the sink is firmly installed and the silicone is at least partially cured (after 4–6 hours it is usually firm enough to prevent the sink from shifting), you can complete the connection of the trap and water supply.
Trap and drain
- Connect the trap to the drain valve – always with new gaskets, never without. Never reuse old gaskets from a previous sink.
- Connect the trap outlet to the wall drain flange – either directly into the HT pipe (40 mm or 50 mm), or through a plastic reducer.
- Check the slope of the trap toward the drain – the horizontal section should have at least a 1–2° slope (about 1–2 cm over 50 cm length). Horizontal or even "hills" in the drain pipe cause sedimentation of dirt and odors.
- Manually tighten all trap nuts and connections – do not use a wrench directly on plastic nuts, only manually or with rubber pliers. Plastic is easily twisted and cracked.
Water supply
- Connect flexible hoses (pre-made hoses G3/8 or G1/2 with braided reinforcement) to the angle valves under the sink cabinet.
- Red hose = hot water, blue = cold – this standard color convention is used in Slovakia and the Czech Republic.
- Before opening the valves, check that all connections are tightened – gaskets must be in place.
- Open the angle valves slowly and monitor each connection. Immediately tighten any leaking connection.
Step 6: Leak test and final inspection
This is not an optional step – it is mandatory. Fill each basin of the sink with water and let it stand for 5 minutes, then drain it and monitor each drain connection, the gasket of the drain valve, and the silicone under the sink rim.
If you notice dripping at the waste valve, tighten the nut or replace the gasket. A leak at the silicone (under the sink rim) means the silicone was not applied sufficiently or the sink was shifted during installation. In such a case, the silicone must be carefully removed and reapplied – which with granite sinks means removing the sink, cleaning, drying, and reinstallation.
Specifics of granite sink installation
Granite (composite) sinks are heavier than stainless steel ones – for example, a large Sinks BEST 780 Granblack typically weighs 12–16 kg without water, or even more in the case of large double sinks. This has several practical consequences:
- You need two people: One holds the sink during insertion, the other checks the seating and centers it. Handling a larger granite sink alone is not safe – the sink may slip and scratch or crack the countertop or the sink itself.
- The countertop must be sturdy: Thin countertops (18 mm DTD) under a heavy granite sink may sag under long-term load. I recommend a countertop of at least 28–38 mm thickness for a sink over 10 kg, or a support under the sink cabinet.
- The silicone must hold the shape: Sanitary silicone for granite must be non-acidic (acetoxy silicones may damage the granite surface) – look for the label "neutral cure" or explicitly "suitable for natural and composite stone".
- Color of the sink and silicone: For a dark sink (e.g., Granblack), use black or gray silicone. For a light sink (e.g., Sinks SOLO 560 Milk), use gray or white. Transparent silicone is universal, but it may yellow over time and become visible on dark sinks.
Installation of accessories: shelves and drainboard
Many people forget about sink accessories until everything is assembled and the cabinet is closed. Therefore, always plan the interior layout of the cabinet before the final installation of the trap.
Drainboards and drip trays are usually placed on the sink or on the countertop next to it – there is no risk of collision with the trap here, but check whether the drip tray has sufficient reach to the edge of the sink and does not extend beyond the edge of the countertop outward.
Most common mistakes during sink installation and how to avoid them
Over the years of experience in the field, the same problems keep repeating:
- Opening cut too large: The template was used as an outer dimension, not as a cut dimension. Result: the sink rim does not cover the edges of the cut. Solution: always carefully read the installation instructions – most templates have a "cut line" vs. "outer line" marked.
- Dry or uncleaned surface was left: Silicone does not adhere to greasy or wet surfaces. After two weeks, it will start to peel and water will settle under the sink rim, leading to mold and swelling of the countertop.
- Clamps tightened in one direction: If you tighten all clamps on one side first, the sink will tilt and the silicone will have uneven thickness. Always tighten them in a crisscross pattern (as with car wheels).
- Forgotten waste valve gasket: The small rubber ring between the valve and the sink bottom is easily left on the table. Without it, every filling of the sink will leak.
- Sink filled too soon: If you do not wait for the silicone to cure before fully filling the sink, the weight of the water may slightly rotate or shift the sink, compromising the seal.
- Unsealed edges of the cut in DTD: This is the most common issue I see. After one or two years, the countertop will swell right next to the sink, the sink rim will lift, and a gap will form. Sealing the edges takes 5 minutes but saves many problems.

When to call a professional and when you can do it yourself
Installation of an inset sink into a laminated countertop is doable by yourself with the right approach – if you have basic skills, the right tools, and time (plan for a whole morning). An undermount sink into a stone countertop is a different story: it requires edge grinding, special adhesive, and precise adjustment – a professional is clearly the better choice here. Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Do I always have to use silicone, or are clamps enough?
Clamps alone are not enough. They secure the position of the sink but do not provide a waterproof seal. Water that gets under the sink rim (during washing, splashing) will run onto the DTD countertop and cause swelling and mold. Silicone is mandatory in all cases, without exception. Some manufacturers supply sinks with a rubber sealing frame instead of silicone – this is also acceptable, but only if the frame is complete and undamaged.
Which silicone to use – transparent, white or colored?
Always sanitary (marked as "sanitary" or "bathroom & kitchen"), neutral curing (neutral cure) – not acetic. The color is chosen according to the sink: dark sinks = black or gray silicone, light = white or gray, or transparent. Transparent silicone is the most universal, but after several years it may turn yellow, which is visible on dark sinks. For granite sinks, acetic silicone is not recommended – acetic acid during curing may damage the porous surface of the granite.
How long should you wait before using the sink for the first time after installation?
At least 24 hours with regular sanitary silicone at a temperature of +20 °C and normal humidity. At lower temperatures (e.g., in an unheated house), curing takes longer – up to 48 hours. The package of silicone always states the full curing time (full cure) – follow it. You can use the sink carefully (fill and immediately drain) after 6–8 hours to check for leaks, but full loading (bowls full of water standing for a longer time) should be postponed until 24 hours later.
What to do if the cutout is too large and the sink rim does not cover it?
This is unfortunately a serious problem that cannot be easily fixed. Options are: (1) replacement of the worktop – the most correct solution, (2) covering the edges with a decorative strip or sealing tape in the same shade – a compromise solution for small overhangs up to 5 mm, (3) choosing a larger sink with a larger rim, if the cabinet dimensions allow. Therefore, always measure twice, cut once – and if in doubt, make the cut 2 mm smaller and then enlarge it or finish it with a router.
Do I have to remove all the old silicone when replacing an old sink?
Yes, absolutely. New silicone does not adhere to old silicone – a chemical bond is not possible between two different layers of silicone. Remove the old silicone with a special silicone remover (available at any hardware store), let it work according to the instructions, then scrape it off with a spatula and thoroughly clean and degrease the surface. Apply new silicone only to such a prepared surface.
Can a sink be installed without pre-assembling the trap, or can I do it later?
Technically yes, but in practice it is unnecessarily complicated. You install the trap through the hole in the sink, tightening the nut from underneath in a tight space under the sink in the cabinet. While the sink is free, you have convenient access and the work takes 5 minutes. After installing the sink into the worktop, the space is limited, you work blindly, it is difficult to tighten the nut evenly, and the seal may crack. I always recommend pre-assembly before installation.
