installation order in a mixing loop

Installation of the mixing circuit is a key aspect in the realization of professional heating, where incorrect component order can lead to unstable temperature or damage to the pump. The correct installation sequence ensures optimal flow, proper function of thermostatic valves, and prevents unwanted hydraulic phenomena in the system.

Basic supply and return pipe diagram

The first step in installation is always identifying the correct placement of the supply and return pipe in relation to the heat source and the mixing valve. The heat source must be connected to the input port (marked as 1) and the return pipe from the system to port 3, while port 2 serves as the output to the heating circuit.

Heat source System V Port 1 Port 3 Output

An error at this point, for example, swapping the supply with the return pipe, will cause the valve to work against pressure and be unable to regulate temperature. Therefore, it is critical to verify the flow direction on the valve body, which is often marked with an arrow, and to follow the orientation according to the technical datasheet.

Positioning of the circulation pump and its protection

The circulation pump must always be installed on the return pipe side, just before the inlet to the mixing valve, so that it operates under conditions of lower water temperature. This position protects the mechanical shaft sealing part of the pump from excessive heating and extends its lifespan.

  • The pump should be placed so that the motor axis is horizontal, which prevents air bubbles in the bearings.
  • It is always advisable to install a filter directly before the pump to prevent dirt from entering the system.
  • For long pipe sections, consider installing a control valve before the pump for better stability.

Critical position of the three-way valve EUROMIX

The three-way valve, such as the model EUROMIX F4 3/4", forms the core of the entire process and must be placed precisely between the pump and the return pipe from the system. Its role is to mix hot water from the source with cooler water from the return pipe, thus achieving the desired temperature for floor heating.

Return pipe Underfloor heating Hot water V Mix

In practice, we have seen cases where the pump was installed after the valve, which caused water circulation through the valve even when it was closed, leading to thermal shock and rapid wear of rubber parts.

Role of the flow limiter ROTODIVERT

In order for the system to operate stably, it is necessary to set the maximum flow using a control valve, such as ROTODIVERT DN20, which is mounted on the return pipe from the system. This valve serves as a safety device that prevents cold water from the return pipe from completely flooding the heat source and causing gas condensation.

Setting this valve can be done only after the system is started and the air is bled, while monitoring the temperature difference between the supply and return pipe. If the difference is too small, it means that the flow is too high and the valve should be slightly tightened.

Integration of the actuator and thermostat

The actuator is mounted on the top part of the body of the three-way valve and must be oriented so that it moves in the direction of opening and closing according to the temperature needs. For most applications, an ideal solution is the combination of EUROMIX F4 5/4" with a universal two-position or modulating actuator.

Valve Actuator Cable Thermostat Signal

It is important to check whether the power cable of the actuator is long enough and whether it is not exposed to direct sunlight or close to hot pipes, which can cause insulation degradation.

Hydraulic balancing and venting

The last step before commissioning is the installation of an automatic air vent at the highest point of the circuit and manual valves on each branch for subsequent hydraulic balancing. Without proper venting, air locks can form, which block the flow and cause noise in the pipes.

When setting up the hydraulics, it is necessary to proceed systematically, starting from the most distant circuit and gradually opening the valves on the other branches until the pressure imbalance is balanced. This is the moment when it is worth using ROTODIVERT DN25 for larger diameters and higher flows.

Hydraulic Separation and the Importance of Connection

Most technical problems with mixing arise due to the absence or incorrect dimensioning of hydraulic insulation between the heat source and the heating circuit. Without this separation, there is indirect influence on flows, which leads to temperature instability in rooms and excessive loading of the boiler pump.

A key element is the creation of a three-way connection (hydraulic bridge) just before the inlet to the mixing valve. This section must have a sufficient cross-section and length to ensure that water from the source and the return pipe of the system can mix without interfering with each other's flow.

Boiler/Source Return Pipe Connection Mixer

Experience shows that if the connection is too narrow or short, a so-called "hydraulic short circuit" occurs, where water from the boiler immediately flows back into the boiler without passing through the system. This causes rapid boiler cycling and inefficient operation. It is also important to ensure that the pump on the connection is properly dimensioned and placed so that it creates sufficient pressure to overcome the resistance in the system.

The Importance of the Correct Flow Direction in the Connection

The flow direction of water in the connection is critical for the function of the entire system. Water should flow from the heat source back into the system, with its temperature gradually decreasing due to mixing with the cooler water from the return pipe. If this direction is disrupted, it can lead to overheating of components or the valve being unable to achieve the desired temperature.

  • Check the arrows on the valve body and make sure they are correctly oriented in relation to the water flow.
  • When installing the pump on the connection, ensure that the motor shaft is horizontal and the flow direction is consistent with the arrow on the pump body.
  • Make sure the connection is long enough to create a stable pressure field.

Safety Elements and Protection Against Overheating

In addition to standard components, it is necessary to consider the installation of safety elements that protect the system from extreme situations. One of them is a thermostatic valve with a maximum setting, which is mounted on the supply pipe before the mixing valve.

This valve functions as a backup. If a fault occurs in the actuator or regulation and water of excessively high temperature enters the system, the thermostatic valve will automatically close and divert the water back to the source or through the connection, thus preventing overheating of the floor or radiators.

Supply Thermostat V System Connection

In practice, we have recorded cases where the absence of a safety valve caused permanent damage to floor coverings due to a sudden increase in water temperature. Therefore, it is advisable to always integrate this protection, especially in systems with high thermal output or when using sensitive materials.

Installation Documentation and Accuracy Check

After completing the physical installation, it is essential to perform a comprehensive check of all connections and settings. Each threaded connection should be tightened according to the torque specified in the technical sheet to prevent damage to the seals or leakage.

Common Questions

Can I install the pump before the valve?

Technically, it is possible, but not recommended, as the pump would operate in hot water, which shortens its lifespan and increases the risk of seal failure.

How to set the maximum flow on ROTODIVERT?

Set it so that the temperature difference between the supply and return pipe is approximately 10 to 15 °C at full system load.

Why does the valve jam immediately after installation?

A common cause is the presence of dirt in the pipe or incorrect orientation of the valve, as the rubber seal can be caught by a foreign object.

Following this installation procedure ensures not only the long life of your heating system, but also efficient energy consumption and comfortable indoor temperature. Properly selected components and their logical arrangement are the foundation for trouble-free operation of any modern heating system.
