Legal and safety framework – the basics you need to know

Before starting any work on a boiler, it's essential to understand what the law allows and doesn't allow in Slovakia. Act No. 250/2012 Coll. on regulation in network industries and related decrees determine who may carry out work on gas appliances. In short: any intervention in gas piping, replacement of gas valves, the burner, gas piping inside the boiler, or gas pressure measuring devices must be carried out by a person with the relevant professional qualification – typically a service technician with a valid authorisation under Decree of the Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs and Family of the Slovak Republic No. 508/2009 Coll. (group E – electrical equipment, group P – gas equipment).

Equally important is the question of warranty and insurance. If the boiler is still under warranty, any unauthorised intervention – even replacing a non-gas part – can void your warranty claims. What are "easy" parts really, and why it's not that simple

Online discussions sometimes suggest "just unscrew X and fit a new one". The problem is that a condensing boiler is a closed system where almost every intervention affects several things at once. When you replace the condensate siphon, you need to know how to seal the joint properly so that gas doesn't leak in an unsuitable place. When you replace the anode of a boiler-integrated cylinder, you need to know what sealing torque the thread requires. When inflating the expansion vessel, you need to know the correct system operating pressure and the condition of the membrane.

The following sections go through the most commonly replaced parts systematically – from the simplest to the most complex. For each part we state: what it does, what tools you need, what risks exist, and the verdict (DIY / with assistance / professional only).

Parts you can replace yourself – with common sense and the right procedure

1. Condensate siphon

The condensate siphon is a plastic or polypropylene component at the bottom of the boiler that acts as a water trap. It prevents flue gases from getting back into the room via the condensate drain pipe. If the siphon dries out or becomes clogged with sediment (which happens roughly every 1–2 years with insufficient maintenance), the boiler either gives off strange odours or the control electronics report a flue gas pressure fault.

Replacing the siphon is almost always a mechanical job that doesn't require draining the central heating circuit. Procedure: turn off the boiler, wait 10 minutes (to cool down), place a container under the siphon (the remaining condensate will drain out – typically 0.5–2 dl of acidic water with a pH of around 4–5, so be careful with surfaces), unscrew or twist off the siphon (bayonet or threaded connection depending on manufacturer), clean it or replace it with a new one, fill with clean water and refit. The whole task takes 10–20 minutes.

Tools: Plastic bags, a container for the condensate, possibly a flat screwdriver for the retaining clip. No special tools are needed.

Risks: An incorrectly fitted siphon can cause flue gas leakage – always check tightness after installation (with a moistened hand around the joints, or with a gas detector). Acidic condensate will damage surfaces, so be careful.

2. Expansion vessel – pressure check and possible replacement

The expansion vessel compensates for the expansion of water when heated. In most boilers it's located directly inside the unit (volume 8–12 litres for typical family homes; for larger systems it's external). A membrane inside the vessel separates the air (pre-charge pressure typically 0.75–1.0 bar) from the water.

Checking the pre-charge pressure and topping it up with a bicycle pump via the air valve (Schrader valve, same as a car tyre) is a simple task anyone can manage. Note: before measuring pressure, the system must be depressurised, or the system pressure must not compress the membrane (it's best to measure when the temperature is below 30°C and the system water pressure is below 0.5 bar, which in practice means the boiler is cold and the expansion vessel is isolated by a shut-off valve, if one exists).

If the membrane is cracked and the vessel holds water on the air side, the whole vessel must be replaced. This replacement requires partially draining the circuit – which a skilled DIYer can manage if they know where the drain cocks are and how to properly refill and vent the system afterwards. Tools: Tyre pressure gauge, bicycle pump or compressor, a wrench for the radiator bleed valve, a container for water during draining.

3. Mechanical debris filter (strainer)

Most condensing boilers have a filter fitted on the water inlet pipe (heating return) – either built directly into the boiler or as an external strainer-type filter (Y-filter). This filter catches rust particles, sand grains and other mechanical debris that could damage the circulation pump or the three-way valve.

Cleaning the filter is a simple operation: close the inlet cock, place a container underneath, unscrew the filter cap (G 1/2 or G 3/4 thread), remove the strainer, rinse under running water or in a mild citric acid solution (10 g/l), refit and seal. Replacing the whole filter or strainer, if it's mechanically damaged, is equally simple – make sure to use the correct size and thread type.

Tools: Adjustable wrench, gaskets (usually supplied with the new filter), a container.

4. Automatic air vent

The automatic air vent is a small plastic or brass head usually located on top of the circulation pump or at a high point of the boiler's hydraulic circuit. If it becomes blocked or starts leaking, it's one of the parts commonly replaced. Turn off the boiler, close the circuit (if a cock is available), unscrew the old valve, wrap the seal, and screw in a new one. The whole task takes 5 minutes.

Note: in less accessible locations, or if no cock is available, you'll need to depressurise the entire system – which is more complicated but still manageable for a skilled DIYer.

5. Cylinder anode (if the boiler is combined with domestic hot water heating)

Combi boilers or boilers with an integrated hot water cylinder have a magnesium or titanium anode that electrochemically protects the cylinder from corrosion. A magnesium anode gradually dissolves – typically needing replacement every 2–4 years depending on water hardness (faster in areas with hard water). A new anode typically has a diameter of 26–33 mm and a G 3/4 or G 1 1/4 thread.

Replacement: drain the hot water cylinder (not the heating circuit), unscrew the anode with an anode wrench (30 mm hex or 1 1/4"), replace it with a new one with the correct thread, seal it and refill. Pay attention to the anode type – magnesium for standard use, titanium (active, with a power supply wire) for cylinders with cathodic protection.

6. Circulation pump

The circulation pump is one of the mechanically stressed parts that is replaced relatively often in a condensing boiler – average lifespan is 10–15 years, but it can be shorter with poor water quality or neglected venting. Modern boilers use integrated wet-rotor pumps (Grundfos, Wilo, Laing) with electronically commutated motors (ECM), which are energy-efficient but also more expensive and technically more complex.

Replacing the pump requires: switching off the boiler and disconnecting it from the mains, closing the shut-off cocks on the flow and return (if fitted – unfortunately, some boilers don't have them), draining part of the circuit, unscrewing the pump's flange or threaded connection, disconnecting the electrical connectors, and fitting the new pump. The key point is correct pump orientation (direction of water flow) and sealing the flange (the gasket must always be replaced with a new one).

Why the reservation? The pump's electrical wiring may in some boilers be directly connected to the control board without a separate breaker – any imprecise intervention in the electrical part of the boiler can damage the PCB (control board), which can cost €300–800. So: mechanical replacement, yes; the electrical part – if you're not an electrician, it's better to call a technician.

7. Pressure relief valve

The pressure relief (safety) valve in the boiler opens when the set pressure is exceeded – most commonly 3 bar. If the valve starts dripping or leaking intermittently, it's a sign either that the system pressure is genuinely too high (and the cause needs to be found – usually a faulty expansion vessel), or that the valve seat is worn and the valve needs replacing.

Replacing the pressure relief valve is mechanically simple – G 1/2 thread; release the pressure, unscrew the old one, screw in the new one. But be careful: after replacement you must be able to check that the new valve has the correct pressure rating (usually 3 bar for heating, some systems use 4 bar). A valve with the wrong rating can cause damage to the system or fail to provide protection. If you're not sure, call a professional.

8. Three-way diverter valve

In combi boilers, the three-way valve switches between heating the central heating system and heating domestic hot water. If the valve stops switching correctly (the boiler doesn't heat, or conversely – doesn't heat the hot water), this used to be a purely mechanical issue in older boilers. In modern condensing boilers, the three-way valve is controlled by a servomotor and connected to the control board – which complicates the installation.

The valve itself has seals that wear out and start leaking. Physically replacing the valve body requires turning off the boiler, closing the circuits, draining part of the circuit, unscrewing and replacing – which a skilled DIYer can manage. However, connecting the servo's wiring to the control board and setting the valve position is a more delicate task. If the valve doesn't communicate correctly with the electronics after replacement, the boiler may display errors or run in emergency mode.

9. Burner, gas valve and everything connected with gas

This is a categorical boundary. Replacing the burner, gas control valve, gas solenoid valve, burner nozzle, ignition electrode or ionisation electrode (located at the burner) belongs exclusively in the hands of an authorised service technician. The reason is simple: an incorrectly fitted nozzle (wrong size), an incorrectly set air-gas ratio, or a leak in the boiler's gas section can lead to gas leakage, an explosion or carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning.

The ionisation electrode (flame sensor) is a special case – the replacement itself is simple (unscrew, replace, screw back in), but afterwards a technician must check the correct setting of the air-fuel mixture with a flue gas analyser and check the CO, CO₂ and O₂ content in the flue gases. Do not carry out replacements in the burner area without this measurement – even if it seems simple.

10. Heat exchanger (primary, secondary)

The heat exchanger is the heart of the condensing boiler. The primary exchanger (most often stainless steel or aluminium) transfers heat from the burner to the heating water. The secondary exchanger (plate-type, for preparing domestic hot water in combi boilers) transfers heat from the heating circuit to the drinking water. If the exchanger starts leaking or is worn by sediment to the point where it can no longer be cleaned, replacement is necessary.

Replacing the primary exchanger requires dismantling a large part of the boiler and disconnecting it from the flue system and the gas piping – which is a job for a professional. The secondary plate exchanger is mechanically simpler – threaded or flanged connections, no gas parts. In principle, an experienced DIYer can manage the replacement of the plate insert itself, but beforehand the system must be drained and pressure-tested afterwards. We recommend leaving this to a professional, especially for larger boilers.

11. Control board (PCB) and electronics

The control board is the brain of the boiler. It controls all processes – ignition, output regulation (modulation), protections, communication with the thermostat and external control (OpenTherm, eBUS, 0–10V). Replacing the PCB is physically simple – disconnect the connectors, unscrew the board, fit the new one. But then a problem arises: most new boards require parameter settings (boiler type, capacity, country of use, gas type, pressure limits) via a service menu that's only accessible with an access code for technicians.

Without correct settings, the boiler will either fail to start or will operate incorrectly – with a risk of damaging other components. Moreover, if you set the wrong output or the wrong gas type (natural gas G20 vs. propane G31), a safety risk arises.

How to do it properly – a practical procedure before every installation

Regardless of which part you're replacing, follow the procedure below. We've seen dozens of cases where the failure wasn't caused by the wrong part, but by an incorrect installation procedure for the right part.

  • Identify the boiler and part precisely. The rating plate is your starting point – it contains the model, serial number, year of manufacture, gas type and electrical parameters.   • Download the installation manual. Manufacturers (Viessmann, Vaillant, Bosch, Baxi, Immergas, Junkers and others) publish service manuals on their websites. Find the manual for your exact model – each boiler may have a specific procedure.
  • Disconnect the boiler from the mains. Before any intervention in the boiler, unplug it or switch off the circuit breaker. Never work on live equipment.
  • Close the gas cock. Even for work not related to gas – just to be safe.
  • Close the water shut-off cocks on the heating flow and return to/from the boiler.
  • Depressurise the relevant part of the system. Before opening any hydraulic joint.
  • Always use new seals. Never reuse the old "rubber" from a worn joint – seals are cheap, re-disassembly after a leak is expensive.
  • Check tightness after installation. Check hydraulic joints visually, under increased pressure (test pressure 1.5 times the operating pressure). Do not open or check gas joints yourself – that's a job for a technician with a gas detector.
  • Fill the boiler, vent the system and check the pressure.
  • Turn on the boiler and monitor the first start-up cycle – note any error codes.

The most common mistakes in DIY installation – from experience

Over years of experience selling spare parts for condensing boilers, we've encountered several typical recurring scenarios:

Mixed-up gasket: A customer ordered a new condensate siphon and fitted it without a gasket (thinking it was a different type of siphon and that a gasket wasn't needed). Result: a slow leak of acidic condensate that damaged the electrical board beneath the siphon. Repair costs were 15 times higher than the price of the gasket.

Incorrect pump orientation: A customer replaced the circulation pump and got the flow direction wrong (the arrow on the pump body shows the direction of flow). The boiler worked, but with significantly reduced output – the system was heating at only 40% of normal output. The problem only showed up with the first frosts.

Over-tightened threaded joints: The plastic body of a three-way valve cracked while being tightened with a wrench. The customer used a long wrench with a lot of leverage – the plastic couldn't withstand it. Always tighten threads on plastic parts by hand or with a short wrench and without excessive force.

Mixing up parts based on a photo online: Two customers ordered the same visually identical filter, but for different generations of the boiler – one had a G 3/4 thread, the other G 1/2. Result: the adapter, which sealed under forced conditions, failed after two months. Always check not only visual match but also the part number. Ignoring the root cause of the fault: A customer replaced the circulation pump (the old one was working correctly – it was just noisy and vibrating), but the cause was wear caused by poor water quality (hard water, pH 8.8). Questions and answers (FAQ)

Can I replace the ignition electrode of a condensing boiler myself?

Physically it's a simple task – the electrode is held by one or two screws and is connected to the control board by a single high-voltage connector. The problem arises after replacement: the distance of the electrode from the burner must be precisely set (typically 3–5 mm depending on the manufacturer), and after replacement the ionisation current and combustion process must be checked with a flue gas analyser. This check must be carried out by a technician. Without it, do not replace the electrode yourself – an incorrectly set electrode leads to unstable ignition, a shifted combustion ratio and increased CO emissions.

What should I do if the boiler shows an error code and I don't know the cause?

Each manufacturer has its own system of error codes – e.g. Vaillant F.75 means insufficient pressure (a problem with the pump or a lack of water), Viessmann F4 may indicate a flame ionisation fault. The boiler manual (available on manufacturers' websites or from spare parts retailers) contains the error code explanations. Start there. If the fault relates to gas, the burner or the electronics – always call a technician. If the fault relates to pressure or the pump, you can first try simple steps (topping up the system with water, venting it), and if that doesn't help, call a technician.

Is it worth buying a non-original replacement part to save money?

It depends on the part. For simple mechanical components (siphon, seals, filter, anode), quality aftermarket parts are a fully adequate substitute for the original at a fraction of the price. For electronics (PCB, control modules), gas valves and burners, we always recommend original parts or parts from verified OEM suppliers – the risk of incompatibility or a safety defect is too high. How long does a typical condensate siphon replacement take?

For an experienced technician, 5–10 minutes. For a DIYer doing it for the first time, 20–30 minutes including reading the manual and preparation. It's one of the fastest and simplest tasks on a condensing boiler. Do I need to have the boiler checked by a professional after every part replacement?

It depends on the work carried out. After replacing the siphon, the filter, or topping up the expansion vessel pressure, a professional check isn't necessary – a visual check of tightness and verification that the boiler works when started up is enough.
