The modern Honeywell Home T3 programmable thermostat with a lockable keypad

A thermostat lets us control a heating or cooling system. Its name comes from the Greek “thermo”, meaning temperature, and “statos”, meaning “staying the same”. Put simply, it maintains the required level of warmth: once that level is reached it switches the boiler off, and if the temperature falls below the set level it switches it on again.

Analogue versus digital thermostat

Progress and the development of new technologies have reached heating technology too. Digital thermostats are gradually replacing analogue ones, whose popularity keeps falling. This is down to the many new thermostat features, such as backlit LED touch displays, smartphone control and WiFi connectivity.

The advantage of an analogue thermostat is its lower purchase price. However, it generally does not measure temperature accurately, which pushes heating costs up. A good digital thermostat, by contrast, can save as much as 10% of those costs a year, thanks to its programmability and advanced functions.

What is more, older heating systems that use analogue thermostats contain mercury. So if you are planning to move to a more modern heating system, or are at the stage of sorting out the heating for your new build, it makes sense to focus on digital thermostats. There is a wide range on the market, from simpler models to top-end units with functions ahead of their time.

The Honeywell Home T3 programmable thermostat

The Honeywell Home T3 thermostat is the direct replacement for the older Honeywell CM 707 model. It is easy to operate and is used to control boilers, heating circuits and underfloor heating as well.

The simple look of the white casing is complemented by a contrasting grey once the cover is flipped open. The Honeywell Home T3 thermostat stands out for its modern design with a backlit LCD display on the front. To its left are the buttons for lowering and raising the set value, and under the cover there are three more buttons for more detailed control of the thermostat. On the back you will find the holes for wall mounting as well as the terminals for connecting the wiring.

Just put it together

When you unpack the Honeywell Home T3 thermostat, do not be alarmed that it comes in parts. Assembly could hardly be simpler! Just carefully join the front and back of the thermostat and attach the hinged front cover. This creates the space for the two AA batteries supplied, which start the thermostat automatically once inserted. After you have set the current date and time, nothing will stand in the way of getting to know your new digital thermostat and its functions.

Modes and programming

If you do not program the Honeywell Home T3 after starting it up, it does not matter. The thermostat has a preset schedule, which you can of course adjust to your own requirements. Simply press the “menu” button, select PROG (programming) and set the required temperature for the given time and day of the week. A daily programme set in this way can then easily be copied to the remaining days. The thermostat lets you set a programme for up to seven days, with up to four independent time periods for each day.

The Honeywell Home T3 thermostat has three modes. The automatic and manual modes are complemented by the option of switching the heating off. Users will also appreciate the keypad lock function, which is activated by holding down the right and left buttons for five seconds. The lock is deactivated in the same way.

The Honeywell Home T3 digital thermostat will handle the control of your heating system with ease and lets you set the temperature anywhere from 5 to 35 degrees Celsius. If you plan to use it at your weekend cottage, you will also be pleased with its frost protection at five degrees Celsius.
