An electric boiler is a device that does not require nearly as much attention from the owner as a gas or solid fuel boiler – but that does not mean it does not need any care at all. On the contrary: well-planned and regular maintenance is directly responsible for whether your boiler will operate reliably for 15, 20 or even more years, or whether the first problems, heating interruptions and unnecessarily high electricity bills will appear after just a few seasons.
In this article, we will look at the maintenance and service of SLOKOV SL ELEKTRO electric boilers from all practical angles – from daily routine care, through annual inspections, to situations when professional intervention is necessary. I base this on real experiences with customers and installations, so you will find not only dry theory here, but also specific situations, errors and tips that actually repeat in practice.
Why boiler maintenance is important – even if it doesn't look like it
Many people believe that an electric boiler simply "runs on its own" and that it is enough to call a technician once every few years if something breaks. This perception leads to premature failures, reduced efficiency and unnecessary costs.
An electric boiler works with hot water circulating in a closed loop. Even though the loop is closed, in practice it is never perfectly hermetic – the water gradually changes, water hardness causes deposits on the heating elements, air gets into the system with every refill, and the expansion tank ages and loses its pre-pressure. Each of these processes is slow and invisible, but their cumulative effect after 3–5 years without maintenance is very concrete: the boiler draws more current, heats worse, or problems begin to appear.
The manufacturer SLOKOV designed the SL ELEKTRO series as a robust device with a long service life, but like any other boiler, these machines also need regular care. This applies to all power classes, so the same applies to SLOKOV SL ELEKTRO 10 in small houses, as well as to more powerful models such as SLOKOV SL ELEKTRO 23 or SLOKOV SL ELEKTRO 26 in larger heating systems.
Basic parameters you need to monitor continuously
Daily "operation" of the SLOKOV electric boiler does not require any tools or professional knowledge – it is only a visual check of a few indicators that will take you literally two minutes.
Water pressure in the system
This is undoubtedly the most important parameter to monitor. Most heating systems operate at a working pressure of 1.0 to 2.0 bar, with the recommended cold pressure (system off, water at room temperature) usually around 1.2–1.5 bar. SLOKOV SL ELEKTRO boilers have a pressure gauge directly on the front panel, so the check is simple.
If you see that the pressure is below 0.8 bar, it is necessary to refill the system with water via the filling valve. If the pressure drops repeatedly – for example, every 2–3 weeks you have to refill it – this is a clear sign that water is leaking somewhere in the system. In such a case, you should call a technician and not try to find the leak yourself (especially if the pipe distribution is hidden in the floor or walls).
Watch out for the opposite extreme: if the pressure rises significantly above 2.5 bar after heating the system, it usually indicates a problem with the expansion tank (loss of pre-pressure or a burst membrane). Although the safety valve can handle this (releasing the excess pressure), it is a repeated loss of water and an indicator of a problem that needs to be addressed.
Temperature of supply and return water
SLOKOV SL ELEKTRO boilers display current temperatures on the display. In normal operation, the difference between the supply and return water temperatures (so-called ΔT – delta T) should be in the range of 5 to 15 °C. If ΔT is less than 5 °C, the circulation pump is working too fast or the boiler power is lower than needed. If ΔT is greater than 15–20 °C, it may indicate a weak flow – clogged filters, a faulty pump or air in the system.
Operating noise
A properly functioning SLOKOV electric boiler is mostly quiet – you can only hear the gentle noise of the circulation pump and occasional clicking of thermostats. Any new sounds – bubbling (air in the system), boiling (local boiling due to a clogged element), loud pump noise (cavitation due to low water level) – are a warning that something is wrong.
Annual Preventive Maintenance Step by Step
Once a year, ideally at the end of the heating season (April – May) or just before it starts (September), a more comprehensive inspection should be carried out. Part of it can be done by a skilled owner themselves, while other parts should be handled by a professional service technician.
1. Bleeding the radiators and system
Air in the system is the number one enemy. It causes noise, uneven heating, and unnecessarily burdens the circulation pump. Bleeding radiators can be done by any owner themselves – all you need is a bleed key (usually square, 5–6 mm) and a small container. Procedure: turn off the boiler, wait until the water has cooled down a bit (not necessary, but more comfortable), open the bleed valve on each radiator (starting from the highest and most distant ones), until a continuous stream of water without bubbles flows out. Then check the pressure and top it up if necessary.
Modern systems have an automatic air vent (AAV – automatic air vent) on the boiler circuit, but it still cannot fully replace manual radiator bleeding at least once a year.
2. Inspection and cleaning of the filter (strainer)
Before the boiler inlet, a fine mesh filter (strainer) is installed, which captures mechanical impurities from the circuit – rust particles, deposits, and sediment. This filter should be cleaned at least once a year. After the first maintenance following years without service, you may be surprised – you might find black sludge (magnetite), rust flakes, or even larger pieces of gasket material in the strainer.
Cleaning procedure: close the water supply, place a container underneath, unscrew the strainer, clean the mesh under running water (for heavy dirt, use an old toothbrush and a weak solution of acetic acid), rinse thoroughly, and reassemble. Pay attention to the condition of the gasket – if the rubber gasket is hard or cracked, replace it.
3. Inspection of the expansion tank
The expansion tank has a membrane that separates the air and water chambers, and a pre-charge pressure usually set at 0.75 – 1.0 bar (depending on the system height). Over time, air escapes from the tank and the pre-charge pressure drops. If the expansion tank loses its pre-charge pressure, the safety valve will start dripping repeatedly when the system is heated (you can see a wet spot under the safety valve).
Checking the pre-charge pressure: with the boiler turned off and the system pressure reduced to zero (disconnect the expansion tank and drain the water from it), measure the air pressure through the valve (the same type as on tires). If it is lower than required, add air using a regular pump. If the pre-charge pressure is correct, but the safety valve still drips, the problem lies elsewhere (too small expansion tank or damaged membrane).
4. Inspection of the safety valve
The safety valve is a safety device that opens at excessively high pressure (usually set at 3 bar). Technicians recommend opening the safety valve manually once a year and checking that it closes properly and does not drip. If the valve drips after being manually opened, it is worn out and needs to be replaced – this is a job for a technician (I recommend not doing it while the system is hot).
5. Inspection of the circulation pump
The circulation pump should operate quietly and smoothly. Check for excessive noise (bearing issues are indicated by a grinding sound), whether it gets warmer than normal (by hand – too hot housing), and whether the speed setting matches the system (many pumps have three speed settings, the correct setting depends on the specific installation).
Watch out for one practical issue: pumps in boilers that have been idle for a long time during the summer may "seize" (lime scale on the shaft). After a long break before the season: if the pump does not start, a technician will rotate the shaft using a screwdriver through an access screw hole (most pumps have one). This should not be done by amateurs – there is a risk of electric shock if the boiler is under voltage.
6. Inspection of the electrical part and terminal block
This is exclusively for a qualified electrician or service technician. It involves checking: tightness of the terminals (loose terminals overheat and burn), condition of the protective conductors (PE), condition of the fuses, insulation resistance test of the heating elements and electrical installation. SLOKOV boilers in power ranges from 10 to 26 kW operate with a three-phase connection (400 V), which requires special attention.
Water Quality and Chemical Treatment of the Circuit
This is a topic that is discussed less than it should be when it comes to electric boilers. The quality of water in the circuit has a significant impact on the lifespan of the heating elements, the pump, and the entire system.
Water hardness and scaling of heating elements
Water hardness in Slovakia varies in different regions from 10 to 40 °dH and depends significantly on the location. The harder the water, the faster limescale accumulates on the heating elements. Limescale has very low thermal conductivity – a layer as thin as 1 mm reduces heat transfer by 10–15 %. This means the boiler consumes more electricity to achieve the same temperature. A 3–4 mm thick layer of limescale can increase consumption by up to 30–40 %. In addition, the heating element under the deposits overheats locally – which shortens its lifespan.
Solutions: In areas with hard water (above 20 °dH), it is advisable to fill the circuit with softened or distilled water (or a mixture), or to connect a magnetic or catalytic water softener to the system. When filling for the first time or when replacing the water, we recommend adding a corrosion and scale inhibitor – there are products on the market specifically designed for heating circuits (e.g. Fernox F1, Sentinel X100 and similar). These preparations protect not only the radiators, but also the pump, valves and steel parts.
Corrosion and magnetite
If you have steel radiators in the system (older type, not aluminium), oxidation and the formation of magnetite – a black sludge that settles in the boiler, pump and filters – occurs in the presence of oxygen. Magnetite is extremely abrasive and destroys seals and bearings. Solution: corrosion inhibitor, magnetic filter (captures magnetite) and regular water change every 3–5 years with system flushing.
If you regularly find large amounts of black sludge when cleaning the filter, it is a sign that it is time for a chemical flush of the entire circuit. This task is performed by a professional company – the circuit is filled with a cleaning agent, allowed to circulate for several hours, and then thoroughly drained and refilled with fresh treated water with an inhibitor.
Cleaning heating elements – when and how
The heating elements (coiled heaters) of SLOKOV SL ELEKTRO boilers are made of stainless steel or steel with protective coating, but over time deposits also settle on them. Cleaning heating elements is a more demanding operation that requires partial or complete disassembly of the element from the boiler, and therefore belongs to the hands of a service technician.
The frequency of cleaning heating elements depends on the hardness of the water and the mode of operation:
- Soft water (up to 10 °dH), inhibitor: inspection every 4–5 years
- Moderate hardness (10–20 °dH): inspection every 2–3 years
- Hard water (above 20 °dH) without treatment: inspection annually, cleaning every 1–2 years
Signs of clogged heating elements: the boiler takes longer to reach the set temperature; electricity consumption increases significantly without changes in habits; at full boiler power, you can hear a quiet bubbling or cracking (local boiling at the clogged element).
Chemical cleaning of heating elements is done with an acidic solution (usually diluted citric acid or proprietary descaler). The element is drained, closed, filled with the solution, left for 2–6 hours, then thoroughly rinsed and neutralized. Mechanical cleaning (wire brush) is not recommended for stainless steel – it damages the protective surface and accelerates future corrosion.
Service of electrical components – what belongs exclusively to the technician
The electrical part of SLOKOV SL ELEKTRO boilers operates at 400 V (3 phases) and power from 10 to 26 kW. These are parameters for which unprofessional intervention is not only prohibited, but also directly life-threatening. The following tasks can only be performed by a person with the appropriate electrical qualification (§ 21 or higher, according to Decree No. 508/2009 Coll.):
- Replacement of the heating element – complete disconnection from the network, draining the circuit, measuring insulation resistance before restarting
- Replacement of the control unit or display – electronics are sensitive to static and incorrect power supply
- Inspection and replacement of thermostats and safety thermostats – the safety thermostat (STB) is a safety component, its incorrect setting or bridging is a direct danger
- Replacement of contactors and circuit breakers – checking the correct parameters of replacement parts is necessary
- Inspection of the electrical installation – measuring insulation resistance, earthing resistance, checking the PE conductor path
Important warning: SLOKOV SL ELEKTRO boilers (models SLOKOV SL ELEKTRO 15, SLOKOV SL ELEKTRO 18 and others) have a safety thermostat with manual reset (STB) installed in series, which trips in case of overheating. After tripping, it must be manually reset by pressing the button. However, before resetting, it is necessary to find out why the thermostat tripped – never reset it again without finding out the cause. Repeated tripping indicates a serious problem (insufficient flow, clogged element, damaged pump).
Maintenance documentation
The service book (or service record) is a document that many owners underestimate – and then regret when selling real estate or making a claim. The following should be included in the service documentation:
- Date and description of installation, name of the installer and his certificate
- Initial boiler setting, pressure setting, pump speed
- Every annual inspection – who did it, what was checked, what values were measured
- Every repair – what was replaced, what was the reason
- Water change in the circuit, addition of inhibitor (product, amount)
- Any adjustments to the boiler or system settings
This documentation is key for claims. If the boiler shows a fault and you cannot prove that you have done regular maintenance, the manufacturer or service company may reject the claim. In addition, when selling a house, a complete service history is a huge added value.
Practical scenarios from practice – what really happens
Scenario 1: Boiler "doesn't heat" after summer break
The customer calls in October – the boiler is powered on, glowing, but the radiators are cold. Most common cause: the circulation pump is jammed after summer. The pump stood still for 4–5 months, a layer of limescale on the shaft blocked it. Solution: the technician turns the shaft with a screwdriver, the pump starts running. It takes 10 minutes. If the customer could check this before the season, he would save the service call. Therefore, before each season, briefly start the pump – even if he doesn't need to heat, just to keep the flow system moving.
Scenario 2: Electricity consumption rises significantly
The customer notices that in January he consumes 20–25 % more electricity than two years ago, while the winter is not significantly colder. During the inspection, the technician finds a thick layer of sludge and strong scaling on the heating elements. Result: the boiler ran longer cycles to reach the set temperature, which directly translated into the electricity bill. After chemical cleaning and system flushing, the consumption returned to the original level. Investment in service: around 150–250 €. Annual savings: 180–350 € on electricity.
Scenario 3: Safety valve regularly drips
The customer notices a wet trail under the boiler on the floor. The safety valve drips every day. First reaction – replace the valve. But after replacement, the problem persists. Real cause: the expansion tank had zero pre-charge pressure (the membrane had long been broken). The pressure in the heated system rose sharply and the valve correctly released it. Replacing the expansion tank (a new 8-liter one) solved the problem. If the customer had done a preventive check a year earlier (5 minutes and a bicycle pump), he would have avoided replacing the valve and the expansion tank – just a refilled tank would have been enough.
Scenario 4: Boiler displays an error code
Modern SLOKOV SL ELEKTRO boilers have a diagnostic display, on which an error code appears in case of a fault. Most owners immediately call service in such a case. But many codes can be resolved by the owner themselves – for example, code "low pressure" (refill water), "safety thermostat tripped" (after identifying the cause, reset with a button). Before calling service, always check the manual first – the list of codes and their solutions is part of the documentation of each boiler. Winter setback and frost protection
If you are leaving for a long time in winter (holiday, cottage, which you do not live in all year round), the question arises: turn off the boiler or keep it running in setback mode?
Recommendation for fully heated houses: set the boiler to setback mode (usually 10–15 °C, on SLOKOV boilers adjustable directly on the thermostat or smart controller). The boiler thus maintains a minimum temperature and prevents the system from freezing. This is much safer than complete shutdown, especially in older houses with less good insulation.
For cottages and houses where you do not live for a long time in winter: if you know the house will be empty all winter, it is necessary to either maintain minimal heating or completely drain the system (anti-corrosion flush, drain all water including radiators) and refill and bleed it again in spring. Do not drain the boiler only partially – residual water in the water elements will freeze and crack.
SLOKOV SL ELEKTRO boilers usually have frost protection built into the software (anti-frost function) – the boiler automatically starts when the temperature drops below a set limit (usually 5–7 °C). This function is active only if the boiler is connected to the electrical grid and the system is filled with water.
When to call service and how to choose the right technician
Not every situation needs to be resolved by a service call, but some situations definitely do:
- Water leak from the boiler or from the piping system
- Boiler does not work even after reset and refilling water
- Safety valve repeatedly drips (more than once per season)
- Pump does not show flow despite running
- Error code not described in the manual or recurring
- Any smell, smoke or overheating of the electrical part
- Planned annual professional inspection of the electrical part
The technician you choose should be an authorized electrician or gas fitter (§ 21 or higher for electrical work). For work on the heating circuit, a trained plumber – central heating is sufficient. Ask in advance about the call-out fee, hourly rate and experience with SLOKOV boilers. A good technician will be able to explain what he is doing and why.
Always request a written service report after each visit – even if the technician did not repair anything, just inspected. With proper maintenance, SLOKOV SL ELEKTRO boilers are designed for a lifespan of 20 or more years. Individual components, however, have different lifespans:

How to set the boiler for efficient operation – indirectly related to maintenance
Correct boiler settings are not only a matter of comfort, but also of extending the lifespan of components. A boiler that runs in short cycles (turns on and off every 2–3 minutes) suffers much more than a boiler that runs longer but less often. Short cycles – so-called "tacting" – occur when the boiler's power is oversized compared to the need, or when the thermostat's hysteresis is set too narrow.
For proper setup, we recommend: room thermostat hysteresis min. 0.5–1 °C, setting the output water temperature according to the outside temperature (so-called equithermal control, if the boiler or controller supports it), and night setback during hours when the house is unoccupied. Most frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Do I have to service the SLOKOV electric boiler every year?
The legal obligation for annual servicing applies to gas boilers, not electric ones. For SLOKOV electric boilers, annual servicing is not legally required. However, according to Decree 508/2009 Coll., an expert inspection of the electrical installation (including the boiler) should be carried out at intervals – every 5 years for apartment buildings, and upon sale for single-family homes. Nevertheless, we strongly recommend an annual check of basic boiler parameters (pressure, bleeding, filter) – either by yourself or by a technician.
Can I refill the boiler with water myself if the pressure drops?
Yes, refilling water via the filling valve is a routine operation that the owner can handle. Open the filling valve (usually a small ball valve on the supply line), monitor the pressure gauge, and when the pressure reaches 1.2–1.5 bar, close the valve. Important: always bleed the radiators after refilling if the system lost water. If you need to refill more than 2–3 times a year, contact a technician – there may be a leak somewhere.
What is the correct pressure in the boiler circuit for SLOKOV boilers?
Cold pressure (a cooled system at room temperature) should be 1.2–1.5 bar. When the system is heated to operating temperature (60–75 °C), the pressure will rise to 1.8–2.2 bar – this is normal and correct. If the pressure rises above 2.5 bar during heating, check the expansion tank. If the pressure does not return to the cold level after the system cools down, there is likely a leak or a problem with the expansion tank.
What to do if the boiler does not start after summer?
First, check: 1) Whether the boiler is switched on at the main switch and on the boiler panel. 2) Whether the water pressure is within the correct range – if it is below 0.8 bar, refill it. 3) Whether the safety shut-off (fuse, circuit breaker in the distribution board) is not tripped. 4) Whether the circulation pump is running – place your hand on the pump to feel slight vibrations. Is it normal for a SLOKOV boiler to consume more electricity after several years?
No, this is not normal or necessary. A modern electric boiler has an efficiency close to 100% – practically all electrical energy is converted into heat. An increase in consumption is almost always due to fouled heating elements, reduced flow (filter, jammed pump), or deteriorated insulation of the distribution system. After a thorough service, the consumption should return to its original level. If it does not, it is time to check the house insulation or the control settings.
Can I replace the heating element in a SLOKOV boiler myself?
No. Replacing the heating element (heater) in SLOKOV SL ELEKTRO boilers requires disconnecting from the three-phase electrical supply (400 V), draining the circuit, disassembling the element, checking the insulation resistance of the new element, and refilling and bleeding the system. Each of these steps carries safety risks. The work must be carried out by an electrician with valid qualifications (§ 21+) and after the repair, a written report of the measurements must be submitted.
