This is a mistake that typically becomes apparent after several years – and the repair will be significantly more expensive than preventive measures would have been.
In this article, we will look at what specifically threatens the outdoor unit, why rain and insects are the most common hidden causes of malfunctions and premature wear, and how these problems can be elegantly and inexpensively avoided. Water starts to accumulate, freezes in winter – and repeated cycles of freezing and thawing damage the sheet metal, joints, and seals. I have seen cases where the bottom tray was completely corroded with holes after three years – and insects entered through these holes.

- Heat: During operation in heating mode or as a heat pump, the outdoor unit produces heat. This is a magnetic attraction for insects, especially in the fall when they are searching for warm shelters to hibernate.
- Electromagnetic field: Some types of insects, especially wasps and ants, are attracted to the electromagnetic field generated by the fan motor and compressor.
- Darkness and hidden space: The interior of the outdoor unit is dark, protected, and at first glance safe – ideal for nesting.
- Open entries through grilles: Standard protective grilles have openings large enough to allow wasps, ants, or cockroaches to pass through.
What insects inside the unit cause
Wasps or ants’ nests are the most serious in this context. The building material of the nest – a paper-like substance mixed with saliva and plant fibers – is relatively good electrical insulation, but it is hygroscopic (absorbs moisture). - Step 5 – Installation of the rain cover – the top and side covers are attached with screws to the metal cover of the unit. Make sure the screws are stainless steel or galvanized, not regular steel – they would rust within 2–3 years and damage the paint on the cover.
- Step 6 – Functional test – turn on the unit and let it run for 15–20 minutes. Check that the covers do not cause vibrations or annoying noises, and that the air from the fan freely exits.
What happens if you do not take care of the protection of the outdoor unit – real scenarios from practice
To illustrate, I present a few typical customer cases we repeatedly encounter:
Scenario A – Restaurant with air conditioning near the back entrance: The outdoor unit was installed on a bracket on the ground next to the trash bins. A special chapter is the seasonal closing and opening of the air conditioning. Many people welcome spring by turning on the air conditioning in cooling mode and wonder why it is not working properly. The problem may be exactly what happened in the outdoor unit during the winter.
Before winter:
- Check the drain hole in the lower tray – it must be clear to allow condensate water to drain freely.
- Check the condition of the mesh filters – if they are clogged with leaves or dirt, clean them with a soft sponge (not high-pressure cleaning, which could damage the fins).
- If you are turning off the unit completely for the winter and do not plan to operate it in heating mode (heat pump), consider covering the fan with a textile cover – but NEVER cover the entire unit airtight, as this could cause internal dampness.
- Check the mounting of the console – vibrations during the summer can loosen the screws.
After winter, before starting:
- Physically open the lower cover (if it is on latches or screws) and check whether any insects have settled inside during the winter – wasps actively look for new nests in spring.

Why generic covers from hardware stores are not an ideal solution
You can find various "universal" covers, aluminum profile hoods, or cellophane wraps on the market that are cheap and seemingly solve the same problem. However, we do not recommend them from practical experience for several reasons:
- Incorrect shape: Generic covers do not fit the exact dimensions of the outdoor unit and create gaps through which rainwater can flow inward instead of outward.
- Incorrect material: Cheap plastic covers degrade under UV radiation, crack, and plastic fragments can block the fins.
- Obstruction of condensate drainage: This is the most serious problem – a poorly placed generic cover can cover the condensate drain hole on the inside, causing water accumulation and subsequent frost damage to the bottom of the unit.
- Impact on warranty: Installation of unapproved accessories can be a reason for rejection of warranty repairs.

In practice – units with protection can last 10–12 years without major intervention, while units without protection typically begin to show issues after 4–6 years.
Can an insect mesh reduce the performance of the air conditioner?
Yes, if it is not properly dimensioned or if it becomes clogged. A fine mesh with the correct mesh size (typically 2–4 mm for larger insects, 0.8–1.5 mm for ants) causes a pressure drop in the range of 1–3 Pa at typical outdoor unit airflow rates. This is practically negligible – it corresponds to an increase in energy consumption of less than 0.5%. Never intervene yourself. Wasps attack aggressively in groups when their nest is threatened – their stings are painful and can be fatal in the case of an allergic reaction. Call a professional pest control service that has the equipment and procedures to safely treat electrical equipment. After the nest is removed, have the area thoroughly cleaned and have the condition of the electronics checked by an HVAC technician before restarting the unit. Then install a mesh to prevent the situation from recurring.

During the operation of the heat pump in winter, the outdoor unit produces a relatively large amount of condensate (defrost cycle), so free drainage is critical. If in doubt after installation, briefly run the unit in heating mode and check that water freely drains from the bottom of the cover.
Is there a risk that the insect mesh will freeze and crack?
Standard insect meshes designed for outdoor use are made of stainless steel or UV-resistant plastic that is resistant to low temperatures (typically down to –30 °C). Under normal climatic conditions in Slovakia, this risk does not exist. Problems may occur if the mesh is wet and the temperature drops rapidly – if the mesh is dirty (with leaves, dust), water can remain and freeze, potentially damaging the mounting. Again – regular inspection and cleaning are key.
