On one side stands the Protherm Panther – a line of boilers manufactured in Slovakia (the plant in Senica), well established on the domestic market, with a dense service network. On the other side is the Vaillant turboTEC plus – a boiler with a long history on the European market, a synonym for reliability for many installers and investors alike. Each set has its strengths, and each has specific situations where the other one clearly wins.

Protherm Panther – what it actually is

Panther is one of the longest-produced lines of gas boilers in Slovakia. The original Panther boilers were created back in the era of atmospheric burners, and this heritage is reflected in the fact that today there are two basic variants:

  • KOO – an atmospheric boiler with an open combustion chamber. It draws combustion air from the room and discharges flue gases through a chimney with natural draught. It requires a functional chimney and proper boiler room ventilation.
  • KTO – turbo (a sealed-combustion-chamber design). It draws air through a coaxial pipe from outside and discharges flue gases back outside via the same route. It does not require a chimney, only a wall or shaft penetration.

For a set with the 120-litre FE 120 BM cylinder, both versions are available: Protherm Aqua Complet Panther 25KOO + FE 120 BM for houses with a chimney and Protherm Aqua Complet Panther 25KTO + FE 120 BM for installations without a chimney. This split is important – when choosing a set, you need to know the building's structural conditions.

The FE 120 BM cylinder is a floor-standing tank with a single coil and a volume of 120 litres. The "BM" in the name denotes a design for indirect heating via the boiler (with no built-in electric heating element). It is a typical choice for a 3- to 4-member household with average hot water consumption. The cylinder is hydraulically connected to the boiler through a charging circuit – the boiler heats the water in the cylinder with priority over space heating, ensuring rapid availability of DHW.

Vaillant turboTEC plus – what it actually is

The turboTEC plus (VU 202/3-5) is a wall-mounted gas boiler with a sealed combustion chamber, an output of 20 kW, designed primarily for heating. Unlike the Panther KOO, it has no atmospheric variant – the entire turboTEC line is designed as turbo by construction. This makes installation more flexible from a building perspective, but in properties with an existing functional chimney, the chimney may end up unused.

Two solutions are offered for a set with a cylinder. Vaillant turboTEC plus VU 202/3-5 + VIH CK 70 combines the boiler with the compact VIH CK 70 cylinder (70 litres, a special shape suitable for wall-mounting next to the boiler). The second set, Vaillant turboTEC plus VU 202/3-5 + VIH R 120, uses the larger, floor-standing VIH R 120 cylinder with a volume of 120 litres – a more direct parallel to the Protherm set.

The VIH CK 70 cylinder is unique in shape – designed so that it can be hung directly on the wall next to the boiler without requiring floor space. This is an elegant solution for small spaces, but 70 litres is a capacity better suited to a single- or two-person household. The VIH R 120 is a classic floor-standing cylinder with a single coil, 120 litres, analogous to the Protherm FE 120 BM.

For completeness – the category also includes the Vaillant atmoTEC plus VU 200/3-5 + VIH CK 70, i.e. the atmospheric counterpart of the turboTEC with the same VIH CK 70 cylinder. This set serves properties with a chimney, just like the Protherm Panther 25KOO.

Output comparison – 25 kW vs. 20 kW, what matters

One of the first figures customers compare is boiler output. In this set, the Panther has 25 kW, while the turboTEC plus VU 202/3-5 has 20 kW. Does this automatically mean the Panther is better? Not necessarily.

What matters is the output in relation to the heated floor area and the building's heat loss. For a family house built before 2000 without insulation with a floor area of 120–150 m², 20 kW is typically sufficient. For an older, uninsulated building with an area above 180 m², or a boiler that must simultaneously supply a larger cylinder and a large heating system, a 25 kW boiler is more justified. Minimum modulation is also important. Both boilers are modulating – they reduce output as needed. The Protherm Panther 25KTO modulates from around 8 kW, the turboTEC plus 202/3-5 from around 5 kW. This is relevant during transitional periods (spring, autumn) when the boiler operates at low outputs – a boiler with a lower minimum output cycles less, which saves fuel and extends its service life.

Comparing the cylinders – FE 120 BM vs. VIH R 120 vs. VIH CK 70

The cylinder is just as important a part of the set as the boiler. In practice, we often see customers deal with the boiler in great detail and choose the cylinder as an afterthought – which is a mistake, because it is precisely the cylinder that determines hot water comfort.

The Protherm FE 120 BM is a cylindrical, upright cylinder with a single coil heat exchanger. Volume 120 litres, diameter approx. 490 mm, height approx. 870 mm. The inner tank material is enamelled steel. No electric heating element (BM = without electric heating). The thermal insulation is PUR foam, of sufficient thickness for standard operating conditions. The cylinder has a magnesium anode for corrosion protection.

The Vaillant VIH R 120 is an almost direct equivalent. Volume 120 litres, upright, single coil. Dimensions: diameter 505 mm, height 920 mm – slightly taller and wider than the FE 120 BM. Also has an enamelled inner tank, also PUR insulation, also a magnesium anode. The practical difference is minimal; more depends on the specific dimensional constraints of the utility room.

The Vaillant VIH CK 70 is a different category – a 70-litre cylinder of a special compact design intended to be hung on the wall next to the boiler. Height only 580 mm, width 460 mm. For small apartments or utility rooms lacking floor space, this is an elegant solution, but 70 litres comfortably covers only 1-2 people. For a family with children and two bathrooms, it is tight.

Atmospheric vs. turbo – where it matters when choosing a set

The decision between an atmospheric and a turbo boiler is in practice often a structural question rather than a technical preference. If the house has a functional chimney meeting the standard, the investor can choose either the Protherm Panther 25KOO (atmospheric) or the Panther 25KTO (turbo). In this price class, Vaillant offers the atmoTEC plus for a chimney solution and the turboTEC plus for a chimney-free one.

Atmospheric boilers have a lower purchase price, a simpler construction, and therefore cheaper servicing. The disadvantage is dependence on the quality of the chimney draught – in summer, when the chimney is cold and it is warm outside, the draught can fluctuate, causing the boiler to briefly vibrate or fail to stabilise. Turbo boilers are independent of this – the fan is part of the boiler and ensures stable draught under all conditions.

For new builds or renovations without a chimney, the choice is clear – turbo. For old houses with a functional masonry chimney and a customer sensitive to the price of the service contract, an atmospheric boiler can be a legitimate choice. Installation – what it involves in practice

Protherm's Aqua Complet sets are packaged as a whole – boiler, cylinder, and the package also includes a connection kit (hoses, fittings, a three-way valve for charging the cylinder). The installer gets most of what is needed in one place. In practice, this shortens installation time and eliminates component incompatibility. For an experienced heating engineer, this is a difference of 1-2 hours of extra work compared to assembling the components separately.

Vaillant sets in the atria.sk category are also supplied as a pair, but the connection kit may be handled separately – it depends on the specific configuration. Vaillant offers original connection kits (the so-called uniSET) for most combinations, which is an advantage in that the hydraulics are proven and the manufacturer bears responsibility for correctly sizing the hoses and valves.

A few concrete examples from practice:

  • Renovation of a panel-building 3+1 apartment, existing chimney: The customer had an old gas boiler with a chimney. We considered the Panther 25KOO + FE 120 BM – the chimney was functional, the set's price lower, installation simpler. Result: a satisfied customer, lower investment cost, three years of trouble-free operation.
  • New-build detached house, 140 m², no chimney: The boiler had to be routed through the wall. This is a topic customers tend to underestimate when buying, but which becomes top priority at the first breakdown. Both brands – Protherm and Vaillant – have extensive service networks in Slovakia. Protherm additionally has the advantage of being a domestic manufacturer: spare parts are usually available from Slovak distributors, with no need to wait for import from abroad.

Vaillant has a global supply network, and availability of parts is also good for central Slovakia, although delivery of less common components can sometimes take longer. In terms of spare part prices – Vaillant is generally more expensive. For example, a heat exchanger, temperature sensor, or control board – same function, but the Vaillant part's price can be 30-50% higher than an equivalent Protherm part.

When choosing, you should also consider the availability of a service company in your area. In cities and their surrounding areas, availability is similar for both brands. Price and value for money – where the real differences lie

When comparing the prices of Protherm vs. Vaillant sets, the general rule is: Protherm Aqua Complet sets are more affordable. The difference between comparable sets (for example, the Panther 25KTO + FE 120 BM vs. the turboTEC plus VU 202/3-5 + VIH R 120) can range from 10-20% in favour of Protherm. In absolute terms, this can amount to EUR 100-300, depending on current market prices.

This price difference does not mean Vaillant is overpriced. It means Vaillant invests more in design, materials of certain components (e.g. heat exchangers), and global service infrastructure. For a customer for whom price is the main criterion and who wants good technology for reasonable money with domestic servicing, the Protherm Panther is the logical choice. What both sets have in common – and what it's based on

Despite the differences, both sets share the same basic philosophy: the cylinder is heated indirectly via a heat exchanger, the boiler charges the cylinder with priority over space heating (DHW priority mode), and once the cylinder is charged it switches back to heating mode. This principle ensures a constant supply of hot water without dependence on the boiler's instantaneous output.

Both sets work with external control – you can connect a room thermostat or programmable control with OpenTherm communication (both Protherm and Vaillant have their own control heads, respectively are compatible with selected third-party controllers). Vaillant has its own control ecosystem (multiMATIC, vSMART), while Protherm connects with Thermolink series controllers and is compatible with eRELAX modules.

Is the Protherm Panther technically the same boiler as the Vaillant, just under a different name?

Not exactly. Both brands belong to the Vaillant Group and share some platforms, technologies, and manufacturing know-how. But the Panther is designed and manufactured in Senica, Slovakia, while the turboTEC plus comes from Germany. They have different outputs (25 kW vs. 20 kW), slightly different hydraulic and control solutions, and separate service ecosystems. They are not simply rebranded products.

Can I connect a Vaillant cylinder to a Protherm Panther and vice versa?

It is wise to check the condition of the cylinder anode during a renovation – replacement is cheap and significantly extends the tank's service life.

Is it better to buy a set as a package, or the boiler and cylinder separately?
